Climate Scientist To CEI: Stop Misrepresenting My Research»

On Wednesday, the Competitive Enterprise Institute – a front group funded by ExxonMobil and other big oil companies – launched two advertisements in response to Al Gore’s new movie about global warming, An Inconvenient Truth.

One of the advertisements attempts to show that the scientific evidence for global warming is in dispute, claiming a study found the “Antarctic ice sheet is getting thicker, not thinner.”

The primary author of that study, Curt Davis, has issued statement blasting CEI’s use of his study. Here’s an excerpt:

These television ads are a deliberate effort to confuse and mislead the public about the global warming debate. They are selectively using only parts of my previous research to support their claims. They are not telling the entire story to the public.

The whole story, according to Davis, is that increased precipitation in the interior of Antarctica is “predicted consequence of global climate warming.” Warmer temperatures mean more participation and more snow on the interior of the continent. Meanwhile, “Growth of the ice sheet was only noted on the interior of the ice sheet and did not include coastal areas. Coastal areas are known to be losing mass.”

The reality is, there are no legitimate scientists or scientific studies that support CEI’s views on global warming. So they are forced to grossly misrepresent scientific research. Unfortunately for them, the scientists don’t look like they are going to put up with it.

    Two things:
1)I heard part of the CEI spot today, and it is unintentionally hilarious.
2)Can’t we just ignore these people, and maybe they’ll go away? Why is it every time somebody misrepresents something, there is an attempt made to correct the lie? The issue is out there, everyone knows the truth - even those, especially those! - trying to deny it. Just do your job, and let them bleat.

  2. Dave Says:

‘Warmer temperatures mean more participation and more snow on the interior of the continent.’

I’ll be the first to nitpick, but I think it would cause more precipitation. Warmer temps usually cause people to kick back and do less when it’s warmer out, not participate more.

    Sorry for the smartass comment.

  3. chisholm Says:

    judd–is it “participation” or “precipitation?”

  4. WaltTheMan Says:

    3 - chisholm,
Gee, you’re quick. Thank God, I did a refresh before I sent my post.

Good. Knowledge is power, and we need to get more and more of it to the public.

  6. Judd Says:

Thanks, everyone. I’ve fixed the post so it says precipitation.

  7. Mrs. Boucoup McMillions Says:

    Davis says,
“The fact that the interior ice sheet is growing is a predicted consequence of global climate warming.”

Well that makes no sense at all. What a bunch of horse crap. And he also admits the ice cap is not receding on the eastern shore. Let me know when it starts getting warmer, because it’s not getting any warmer in Homer, AK.

  8. Alan Says:

    > Can’t we just ignore these people,

That’s the strategy Gore chose, and it cost him the margin he should have gotten in the 2000 election.

That’s the strategy Kerry chose, and it cost him the 2004 election.

As Clinton is fond of saying, they will keep doing it as long as it works. And it does.

  9. katy Says:

you’re welcome, judd… i was trying to NOT embarrass you publicly…

  10. Hardy Haberman Says:

The oil companies are blinded by their own greed. Unless they have an excape rocket, they are still living on the same planet. I guess they figure with enough money they can avoid any problems from global warming. How will they cope with public reaction when they are shown to be theiving liars?

  11. bobcat_grad Says:

Just for a little refresher course in case you missed this post earlier in the week:

CEI Founder on Global Warming: ‘It Looks Pretty Good…We’re Moving To A More Benign Planet.’

CEI’s founder, Fred Smith, was on Crossfire years ago talking about how “global warming was actually a good thing because of all the cool new crops we could grow.”

Mr. SMITH: Look, the point- what we do know and don’t know, we know that carbon dioxide is increasing. We know carbon dioxide is a plant fertilizer which is a positive benefit to the peoples of the world. We know that there are these elaborate computer models that have never been right before, may be right this time, that suggest climate changes, possibly good, possibly bad. Most of the indications right now are it looks pretty good. Warmer winters, warmer nights, no effects during the day because of clouding, sounds to me like we’re moving to a more benign planet, more rain, richer, easier productivity to agriculture-

That’s right, folks. We should all be happier that the world is getting warmer. Yup, that way, we can all experience the weather of the Carribbean. You know… nice days, nice nights, hurricanes. That stuff.

Prof. Davis received many emails from people outraged by CEI’s deception, including me. He was kind enough to respond to my email and send the link to his public response. I would be surprised if Davis wasn’t outraged himself.

Thank you, Curt Davis for speaking out, and thank you Judd for posting this.

  13. Canuck Stuck in Muck Says:

This is mildly off-topic. I was just reading something about Iran and bellicosity and oil, and I started to think….Suppose Iran gets a nuke. Suppose they start to impose their will around the oil-producing world. I agree that the oil consumers can’t get along without the net-exporters of oil. But, is Iran likely to stifle its only meaningful source of revenue? There is plenty of room for negotiation in this so-called face-off with Iran. Perhaps someone should remind the Pols about that.

  14. wdrane Says:

The mainstream media has on occasion refused to run some liberal political ads. Will they run this one, even though the author of the study they quote has repudiated the ad and said that it is intended to confuse and mislead the public? Anyone want to place bets?

Perhaps some progressive site ought to promote a campaign to the networks to refuse the ads on the grounds that they are untruthful.

Environmental moonbats are invogorated having “morally superior” causes. (Everyone needs to feel NEEDED!) I realize it is VERY disconcerting, BUT this is not the first cyclical climate change. MANY glacial expansions and recessions have occurred in the last billion years. Maybe progs should consider “volcano boycotts” - I know it sounds far-fetched, but those damn volcanos are RESPONSIBLE for tearing holes in the ozone layer with their eruptions!!! Forget the fact they recycle through subduction! (I HATE to break this to you - - but vile mankind is not the ONLY reason climate changes occur….)

  16. Lily Says:

Mrs. Boucoup McMillions, educate yourself, as Clams Casino suggested. The warmer the ocean is, the faster the rate of evaporation. Excess moisture in the air causes an increase in precipitation.

  17. Jay Randal Says:

God help us the Bush Regime and Corporate Elite are even lying about Global Warming to try to cover-up the fact that the ice caps at the polls are melting quickly! If the ice on Greenland melts the oceans will rise 10 to 15 feet, which means half of Florida would go under water and low lying areas like New Orleans! It is a long term disaster in the making!!!

  18. mighty aphrodite Says:

Dear Clams - Who/what was to BLAME for all the previous climate changes? How on earth (no pun intended) did the world SURVIVE without benevolent environmentalists to march in and save the day?

  19. bobcat_grad Says:

    Hey, MA.

Yes. There have been cyclical climate changes in the past. But those happened over a period EONS. THOUSANDS of years.

10 of the warmest years ever recorded happened in the past 14 years.

Why are you afraid of science? I know it’s tough for neo-conservatives to believe in something that has some facts behind it.

Oh… the earth survived. But hundereds of species died out due to the climate changes.

Oh wait…. you don’t believe in evolution, do you? Hmmm… in that case, let me put it in words you’ll understand: God made it cold and then different animals went ‘POOF!’

Google “methane hydrate.” If temperatures rise at the rate currently predicted, it will release so much stored methane that it could extinguish life as we know it (as has happened before in Earth’s history).

And MA will use her last choking breath to say ” (I HATE to break this to you - - but vile mankind is not the ONLY reason climate changes occur….)”

  22. Lily Says:

bobcat_grad, saying climate changes of this magnitude happened over thousands of years is a bit too conservative (no pun intended) an estimate.

Hard to believe, but MAYBE it was their time “to go”.

I’d like you to meet my friend Charles. Charles Darwin. It seems the two of you have a lot in common.

  29. WaltTheMan Says:

DNA is packed into chromosomes which provide the blueprint that provides the construct for every species on Earth and perhaps the Universe. Viruses have only fragments of the DNA sequences that describe human beings, animals, plants, bacteria and other species. Unfortunately some sequences are shared between species. That is the reason that the swine flu wrought havoc in the early 1900’s. The current avian flu has not yet found a hitch in the human genome. This, in effect, means that it can attack an individual human on a cellular level but the human cannot easily transmit the disease to another human.

Having had enough of Corporate greed, I called Citibank to close my credit card account that I just paid off. Of course, they have to transfer me to a ‘Account Specialist’ whose wole purpose is to talk me out of closingthe account because I’m one of the responsible ones who pays my bills on time.

So, I tell the guy that I’m closing my account because I’m tired of the Corporate Greed of companies like Citibank. I wanted it on the record that someone is sick of them. Of course he has to tell me he understands.

“You work for them.” I reminded him. “You help them perpetuate their greed against the average American who is having to choose between food and gas”.

He seems to want to win me over. Offers me zero interest for an entire year to not think poorly of a man with five kids. I bite my tongue. Five kids is greedy too. “Nope, I just want to send a message to your share holders by refusing to do business with your company that couldn’t care less about the plight of teh middle class. Close the account.” When I know that he’s closed the account, I thank him and end the call.

That felt good. Like I stood up for something I believe in. Stood up to the Corporate Greed and showed them that at least someone has had enough.

Not that I expect the sheep to get it and do anything. I mean, I just saw that Ray Nagin got enough votes today for the Mayor’s race for it to be declared too close to call. I thought he would have been lucky to walk away with just the votes of his friends and family. Astounding. He may have actually been re-elected. The guy who could have put people on empty buses and planes to evacuate them and didn’t.

Hopefully you still have one though, it can be pretty inconvenient to do some business transactions without one—renting a car, buying anything online… they’re also nice in emergencies. I’m sure you only sounded like a nut to that poor guy at Citibank, and I’m also sure that one measley account being closed will never draw the attention of the shareholders. Good luck in your journey to stand up to corporate greed here in the USA—you’ll either need to become Amish, start a commune, or leave the country. I hope you’ll still write.

I see- if ya can’t find a place to rant about what you want then just jump right in anywhere and blabber away. Even the article to which we are attempting to comment about is weak “unfortunately……”- the last sentence- Unfortunately my ass. What is unfortunate is the simple fact that no matter how hard we try to get major media coverage of anything that we present we are rejected; anytime our representatives try and introduce bills or amendments presenting our positions on the disgraceful bills being presented, voted on and passed, we can’t even get to talk on the bills; every time we try and hold hearings or even discussions regarding pending goper sponsored actions we are put in the basement or other such disgraces. And I could continue but what the hell.
We are to blame. Our choices have been embarassments. Our inability to act as a serious directed and focused party at least a third of our reps bail on the party position. It is a effing joke.
So I say- since there is no where to turn and the gov is completely controlled and the dems don’t truly give a eff- ya all can simply go to hell. NO MORE SUPPORT FROM ME. AND I SUGGEST THAT THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM IN THIS STABLE.
Was it Leary that coined it first- TURN ON TUNE IN AND DROP OUT!– or something like it.

    Chill bill,
The moment any politician embraced this global-warming topic, they’ve turned it into a politically motivated hysteria. I doubt that Democrat or Republican leaders even care about the facts. One side wants to feed off the hysteria for their own gain, and the other side wants to deny the whole thing. I’m sure there’s a balanced middleground here. You’re right, there’s nowhere to turn—you can’t count on politicians to really make a difference. Do what is in your power to do, then find a way to enjoy life—it’s too short to spend it in despair.

Credit Card companies are leaches and prey on people until they go into bankruptcy, but that is the rub now thanks to stupid Senators of both parties > you cannot file bankruptcy to get out from under credit card debt any longer! You have to go before a bankruptcy judge now who determines how much you must pay to your credit card debtors each month and the amount is taken from your pay check before you use it to pay other bills or food! Call it debtors prison, because you can never get out of debt untill the day you die > thank your worthless trash senators for screwing you over!

I am lucky that I was able to file for bankruptcy before the new law came into effect, so my debts are free and clear, which gave me a chance to start over in life! Credit card companies contact me all the time, but I tell them to screw off! I am free of the rat-race of debt!!!

I often wondered what recourse people should take in a situation like this. I use to think ignoring it was the appropriate action because one, why waste your time, and two, people are open minded, intelligent and they will know BS when they see or hear it. But the last couple of decades, and certainly the last 7 years have been astounding what people will believe. So what next, open public debate, back and forth. Or sue them, like some celebrities have been doing to tabloids. It will bring the issue to the forefront and possible provide an incentive for people to be more truthful.

The first African woman who won Nobel Peace Prize, Wangari Maathai, proved that the environment matters at a very fundamental level to peace and economic growth. True Christians know they are stewards of God’s creations. Respecting the planet is a family value.

One issue that doesn’t get enough attention is environmental racism, but it all comes from the same thinking as the CEI is doing here.

House by house, the Alaskan Eskimo village of Shishmaref is falling into the ocean.

Not everyone is well off asswipe. A lot of people have a credit card and use it when a special need arises—something they were’nt prepared for—and they pay it off as soon as they can. There’s nothing wrong with having a credit card if you use it responsibly. The fact that I have to even explain this shows what kind of arrogant asshole you are. Do you own a home? Do you pay interest on your mortgage—or are you so well off you can just pay cash for your house? I never said you had to have a credit card to get what you need in life—I said they were handy in some business transactions. Did you ever rent a car without a credit card? You have to put down a hefty deposit, and car rental companies won’t accept a debit card unless it’s a debit/credit card with a visa or mastercard logo on it. Credit is important in our culture, even potential employers will do a credit check on you. I’m sure your name wouldn’t even show up on credit reports though—being well off and paying cash for everything.

Thanks. I’ve decided to only do buisness with smaller banks. No more mega-corporations. Just got a new credit card from a smaller local bank. Unfortunately, you’re right - it’s tough to live without one. I’ve had one since I was a junior in college.

I’m not looking for the extreme or the absolute. Just the least amount of Corporate America that I can get away with. I don’t work for them anymore. I don’t watch much television anymore. I don’t shop at mega-retail anymore. And so on.

The guy at Citibank actually seemed pretty traumatized that I lumped him with Corporate America. I think I hurt his feelings - which wasn’t the intention. I just wanted to make a statement and well, it was his job to take it. I didn’t ask to talk to him. He is there solely to talk me out of leaving. I got the feeling he’d never considered that he is an accomplice to ‘the man’ before. He kept saying “I’m just like you. I’m not Corporate myself.” He didn’t want to be seen as part of the problem. But he is.

I know, I’ve been boycotting Exxon for years and I clearly didn’t make a dent considering their record profits. But, that mindset is beginning to catch on and eventually it might make a difference. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. And ever since I gave up religion, I’m not afraid to take it - or of much else. Even if I’m walking alone for a while. I don’t mind.

Last year I decided to unplug myself from the Matrix and start a simplier life. Six months after walking away from consummerism, I went to get a massage for my birthday. The masseuse told me that I really didn’t have any knots or tension like most people she sees. It sort of surprised her.

I think this is part of the reason we are the least healthy industrialized nation in the world. Significantly so, in fact. Stress is slow suicide.

We really have to change our culture. There’s so much more to life than money.

So sorry to hear that. I was appalled that he was even in the final race. Who votes for the man that was partly responsible for the massive catastrophe that ruined so many people’s lives? What is wrong with people? It’s not a freaking popularity contest.

Don’t give up. Just call Mr. Nagin every week and ask him how things are coming along. Make sure he’s out there looking at the levees, and badgering the government to fix them. Hold him accountable. It is his job to look out for New Orleans - not collect a paycheck.

As for Carbon Dioxide emissions - we need to send a rocketship to the planet Venus with these CEI Scientists and Exxon big shots in them..

The planet is relatively the same size as Earth, not that much closer to the sun, and has an atmosphere that is mostly CO2. Some sulfuric acid.

There’s a reason nothing lives on Venus. The atmosphere is very heavy, toxic, and doesn’t let the sun shine through the thick layer of Carbon Dioxide gas. Due to the intense Greenhouse Effect there, Venus routinely gets hot enough to melt lead on its surface.

When the Sea comes in (When the Ship Comes In, Reprise)

Oh soon the time will be up
    And the wind’s won’t stop
And the geese will cease to be breathin
Like the silence in the wind
    ‘Fore when the hurricanes begin
The hour when the sea comes in

    Oh big oil will spit
    Until the seas all hit
Their homes and their profit margins
    As the lies they pound
Will in the truth be drowned
That they doomed all the humans

    Oh the fish’s final sigh
    As the seagulls die
From the poison gas we’ve been spewing
All the rocks will be stained
With all the blood black gold gained
The hour that the sea comes in

And the words that are used
    Won’t get the sea confused
Mercy will be neither known nor spoken
For the chains of the sea
    Were melted in the night
And we’ll be buried at the bottom of the ocean

    No song will lift
    No mainsail will shift
The boats will be drifting to the shoreline
The sun will scorch the bones
of the proud on their thrones
The hour that the sea comes in

    The skies will roll
    Like a carpet of mold
With ragged brown amongst the grey thunder
    The scientists will be silent
    As the storms won’t relent
The hour that the seas come in

    And they’ll raise their hands
Praying they met their god’s demands
But he won’t be answering their numbers
    For they broke it all
    And they caused the fall
And the hour that the seas come in.

As Bill Clinton’s vice-president, Mr Gore helped negotiate the Kyoto treaty on climate change, but Mr Bush refused to sign it.

“It’s just human nature to take time to connect the dots,” he tells a captivated audience, but “there can be a day of reckoning, when you wished you’d connected the dots more quickly”.

On screen, Mr Gore – derisively dubbed “Ozone Man” by the first President Bush – is part environmental evangelist, part stand-up comic. A hit at this year’s Sundance festival, the film shows him tapping on his laptop, pulling his luggage through airports, delivering his message.

“That was a hard blow,” he says of the 2000 defeat. “But what do you do? You make the most of it.”

Mr Gore’s message is stark. “We are witnessing a collision between our civilisation and the Earth,” he says, and he set himself a goal to communicate this point as clearly as possible. “The only way I know to do it is city by city, person by person, family by family.” That sounds a lot like a political campaign.

Peter Knight, a long-time adviser to Mr Gore who is now a partner with him at Generation Investment Management, says his old friend is trying to make a difference. “I think what he’s doing now is what he really loves doing.”

My gut feeling is that this hurricane season will not have as many storms as last year, but the ones that do form will end up worse and more powerful than Katrina! Imagine a category 5 cane with 175 mph sustained winds, with gusts to 200 mph, and a storm surge of 30 feet hitting Miami, Florida, dead on > it would basically level the city of 6 million people; destroy all the hotels on the beaches; probably kill by debris or drown about 100,000 and injure thousands; about one trillion in insured damages and billions more un-insured! FEMA would NOT be able to handle the situation, and since Dubya Dunce Decider is president he would send in the military, and hire Blackwater mercenary thugs to shoot poor people! A few million would flee Florida to other states never to return, so this would make Katrina look small since only a couple hundred thousand fled New Orleans to settle in other states!

Note: New Orleans was never hit directly by the eye wall of Katrina > it was basically a flood that breeched the levees on a canal > winds in NO only reached up to 100 mph, but that was enough to almost rip the roof off the Superdome and shattered windows in the high rise hotels, so imagine what 150 mph winds would have done to NO > French Quarter would have been completely destroyed and Major Nagin would be selling Internet service in another state!

Just a note of caution regarding the push for offshore drilling. One of the major aspects of that activity, one that has kept it from being undertaken for so long, is that doing so releases enormous amounts of methane into the oceans and the atmosphere. Methane is a far more dangerous greenhouse gas than CO2, in terms of its capacity to absorb and retain heat, as well as it being more stable in the atmosphere (less likely to readily breakdown). Offshore drilling, for oil or gas, would seriously and irreparably damage the Earth in the long run, and most probably in the short run. Methane also happens to be toxic to sealife and would kill much of it in and near the drilling sites.

There’s about 4-5 lies or misleading statements just in the trailer for Al Gore’s movie. I can’t wait to see the whole thing, should keep me busy debunking for weeks.

Al Gore is trying to scare the shit out of Americans into voting for him come 2008 so he can save them from imminent doom. 90. katy Says:

from Press Notes for “An Inconvenient Truth” - April 25, 2006

For years, he was introduced as the “next President of the United States” — but in the wake of a personally devastating and controversial defeat in the 2000 election, Al Gore did something entirely unexpected. He hit the road, not in search of exile, but as a traveling showman.
His “show” is a non-partisan, multimedia presentation that reveals, via an original mix of humor, cartoons and convincing scientific evidence, the resonant effects that global warming is wreaking upon our planet…With little fanfare, Gore has presented his show more than 1,000 times in cramped school auditoriums and hotel conference rooms in cities large and small, hoping to propel audiences to make a difference in what might otherwise turn out to be the biggest catastrophe of human history.
Two people who became entranced by Gore’s show are leading environmental activist Laurie David and movie producer Lawrence Bender. David hosted two of Gore’s sold-out presentations in New York and Los Angeles, where it had a transforming effect on her. “I felt like Al Gore had become the Paul Revere of our times,” says David, “traveling around the country calling out this vital warning that we really can’t ignore.”
She also realized that Gore faced a daunting uphill battle in getting his message out into the zeitgeist. “Having researched this subject for some 40 years, nobody understands the issue better than Al Gore…” notes David…“As soon as I saw Gore’s presentation, I knew it could make for the basis of an amazing film,” Lawrence Bender says. “We were all convinced that the moving truth of what Gore was demonstrating needed to be experienced on a much larger scale.” …
So it was that this group of Hollywood producers found themselves pitching the former Vice President of the United States their movie idea…“He [Gore] immediately understood that while he had been getting his message out to thousands of people with his show, a movie could potentially get the message out to millions.”
“This deepening global climate crisis requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely,” says Gore, who saw AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH as one more step towards getting the world to pay attention to the urgent situation at hand.

When I was a child, we were all going to freeze to death someday, now we are going to heat up the planet and melt the ice caps. We are losing ice around the edges of the ice cap, but we are gaining snow in the middle. Does the snow we are gaining in the middle mitigate the damage to the edges? If someone goes against the prevailing scientific view, they are crucified, almost seems like a religion to me. I don’t know who to trust, but it sure isn’t anyone who calls people like me sock puppets, or brown shirts. Even though I’m leaning toward the global warming idea, I will hold my nose and vote republican again. I can’t stand the way Democrats always seem to say, we are right, and you are an idiot. Lady, you need to quit drinking whiskey and get out more, even if it is still dark most of the day. Ever since 1990, Alaska’s been rapidly warming, and the entire Kenai Penninsula…where you live, when you bother to look out the window… is experiencing massive beetle-kills of spruce because those insects now get two generations a summer, not one. How about all those forest firest in the Interior? Permafrost is melting all over the North Slope, creating disastrous slumps. Virtually all your glaciers are receding at massive rates (say bye bye to salmon spawning), and you’ve even got species like red fox and moose well north of the Brooks Range now.

Your post is just more evidence that Alaska’s annual oil trust fund payout is a bad thing. People up there just use it to drink all winter.

I, for one, would never make a joke, like Coulter, suggesting that a Supreme Court justice–even one that I don’t like– ought to be given rat poisoning, or say that the only way to talk to people on the other end of the political spectrum is with a baseball bat (ie. Coulter on liberals).
In any case, even some Republicans like John McCain have come to see global warming and other environmental matters as problems. I advise you to do more reading on this issue
    In any case,

  105. Pops Says:

It is interesting to note that the climates of other planets and moons within our solar system are also warming. This is but one of many intriguing facts that are left out of the discussion.

It seems that the prevalent argument for anthropogenic climate change is “everybody says it’s true, so it is true.” That’s somehow not very satisfactory. There are many problems with the theory that have been raised by legitimate climate researchers. Unfortunately, those issues aren’t politically correct so they have a hard time seeing the light of day.

It’s also disingenuous to tag people and organizations as fronts or apologists for the oil industry without documentation simply because they have issues with the science. I’ve worked for 30 years in an industry that has no relationship with any aspect of the oil industry, and that provides a means to reduce consumption of oil, yet I’ve been accused of somehow being a secret agent for Big Oil.

The politics are swamping the science.

  106. Mark Says:

The right wing idiots that cite ‘climate change has happened in the past, be happy don’t worry’, are totally looking at the wrong facts.

    No surprise there.

You see, our economy will suffer whether climate change is manmade or not. When it stops raining, or when the oceans rise, or when ports and piers are flooded and the movement of int’l commerce is stopped, or when the Gulf Stream shuts down, or when tropical diseases move to the temperate zone permanently, or when tens of millions of people who live on the shore are forced to move inland, the economy will be decimated anyway.

We can slow that arrival date since we have control over what we do.

But, of course, if you’re a right wing nutjob the economy is totally faith based and is spearheaded by none other than right wing nutjobs.

  107. Mark Says:

I just read that Pops thinks that the climates of other planets and moons in our solar system are warming. There’s a good reason that ‘fact’ has been left out of the discussion.
