by the way,I'm #79, above. I was using the same machines that the men used and couldn't lift half of what I lifted. It is not expensive equipment. It looked almost like the equipment I used in high school and lifted 395. Before I was placed on bed rest due to pregnancy, I had been lifting about a month and was lifting 475, all at different gyms. I'm sure none of you guys think it's true or I'm using something wimpy like #78 was saying, but I still would like to make some money.

I am a soon-to-be-39 year old single mom, whose soon-to-be-ex-husband was really into lifting. I would go occassionally to the gym with him. I started w/ 450 leg press, gradually 720, then upto 960 per leg. I'm sure I could have done more but there wasn't anymore room really and I was too tired to put more plates on. I would tell him and he just blew me off. I really had no idea that it was so impressive because, APPARENTLY, he thought I was lying or doing something wrong, or maybel jealous. Does anyone know if there are leg press competitions? Maybe this soon-to-be-single mom can make some much needed money.

Weight alone means nothing unless you also know several other factors, including the distance it was lifted and the degree of hip and knee flexion at the start and end of the movement.

There is a huge difference in the resistance X pounds of weight provides depending on machine design.

There is a huge difference in the effort required to move against a particular level of resistance at different degrees of hip and knee flexion, due to lever advantages.

There is a huge difference in the amount of work performed per repetition depending on the users leg length or range of motion and the machine design.

Power production (which affects the level of demand of the exercise) varies with movement speed and the amount of work performed per repetition.

When comparing exercise performance, weight alone means very little unless other factors of performance and equipment used are taken into consideration.

I have several older female clients who use over 300 lbs on the leg press. However, this is a Nautilus Nitro leg press with a smaller cam than the old Nautilus leg presses, and most of them are not starting with a significant degree of hip flexion, to avoid irritating various hip and lower back problems. I doubt most of them could move half that weight on the more common plate-loaded 45 degree leg press, which is what many people think of when they hear "leg press".

I do not doubt Albright can leg press 400 lbs., but she's probably doing so on a selectorized leg press machine with a smaller cam that provides very little resistance per pound selected, and she's probably using a very short range of motion, which means little work per repetition.

Robertson's claim, however, is most likely complete BS, unless he's starting between halfway and a quarter of the way from the end of the movement, where leverage allows one to move against a much higher level of resistance.

there is no way that 1350 is the record. i am 23 years old, 6'3", 300 pounds, and i did 9 reps at 1200 pounds on leg press the other day, and i went down to my legs touching my chest. i have never played any sport past high school.

my point is that i am not the biggest guy in the world, and it seems that 1350 is awfully low. i think the record has to be much higher. i have seen men squat 1000 pounds on t.v. 1350 leg press should be no problem for them.

i am saying this as a liberal. i dont want the right making fun of us for not having our facts straight.

Just a note on the Robertson weight lifting....

I'm an electrical engineer, so You know what that means (frustrated mehanical engineer).

If the picture is for real, and this machine is loaded with 2000 lbs, he's only lifting maybe 1000 lbs, since the weight is not lifted verticly. Hey, the rack is at about a 45 degree angle, that means half of the weight is supported by the machine and the other half by him.

Please, Check my the math.

From the video I saw, the secret to Pat Robertson's leg press (which did look like a legit 1000 pounds unless the weights are rigged) *is* the fact that he's cheating. The weightlifting newsgroups seem to be full of stories of 1000lb leg pressers that do the same tiny-motion "sissy" lifts he's doing. Especially given the fact that he's also pushing his legs with his hands. I bet he would get killed if he attempted a full free-weight squat. :)

after consulting with various friends who actually work out, they've all pointed out to me that the machine in this picture in the "locked" position. they say that the handles would be turned outward; turned inward means the machine is locked and won't move no matter what.

to his credit, there is a video on his website of him doing 3 reps of 1000 lbs that looks to be legit (although he is cheating by pushing his legs)

"Why isn’t this wire-fraud?

yep… good question…
whenever i see kevin trudeau (sp?) on teevee peddling that scam of a book, i wonder the same thing - and on sunday, i noticed tammy faye baker was with him… now that’s a pair!

I'm not sure what you mean by "scam", since over 200,000 people have been treated successfully by the methods detailed in his book in the past 15 years alone; if we consider the past 80 years, that number rises to at least 670,000 (Sam Biser and Bernard Jensen, John Christopher, and Richard Schulze, respectively). But that aside, if you truly think KT's advice is bad, and that we actually should be ingesting more poisons instead of less, then go right ahead and see where that gets you.
