Nothing I say here will make a bit of difference. People on both sides of this issue will go on believing what they already believe. I see competent opinions being presented, and the responses usually don't even address the topic. People are called "fat" like that discredits what they say. People lump others into groups like "bush cool-aid drinkers" when the post says nothing about their political affiliation...for them, if you disagree with their opinion, you must be on the complete opposite side in every way, "brainwashed". Sorry, not only is that too presumptious, but that doesn't invalidate what they say. Both sides end up sounding like "broken records", to use a phrase from a poster above...but it's BOTH sides. The latest UN report on this issue shows a much lower estimate of the problem than before, so maybe the one extreme (including Al Gore's opinions) is worth adjusting, and the other extreme (that there's absolutely nothing going on) is worth changing. We "could" just look at this as a problem to be worked on, stop throwing insults at each other, and debate the real science. (And yes I'm a scientist). Scientific debate is good and we'll continue to learn more. Most of the people posting just make themselves seem foolish. Even if you're on the side with the most people, and you all pile on the "other guy", you're just like the guys on the "other" website's forums/blogs piling on "your guy". We're not going to boil or be underwater anytime soon, and yet to not consider our impact on the environment would also be silly. We can do what we can, but remember, it's the 2 Goliaths of India and China that wont join Kyoto regardless of what we do...and it's dictators and regimes around the world that are much less accountable than our government that will keep doing what they like...so keep it in perspective as to who's ALL to blame. And we really do have things that are more immediately a threat to our survival at hand than our global climate...not that we should dismiss it, but just so that we spend our energy staying alive "while" we solve our ecological issues.

If you want to know how you really feel about globel warming you need not only ask yourself. If half of what Al Gore is saying is true, would you want your children to live in this world?.......I say this and I will tell you what is going to happen. We are not going to stop globle warming. We will wait intill it is to late because that is what we do. We waited to enter WWII intill we were attacked. We didn't stop 9/11. We didn't prepare for hurrican Katrina. All of these things had terrible outcomes, but in the end we pulled through. Well this problem isnt on a level of one nation doing the right thing. Its on the whole world to do the right thing. Are attemps, on this forum, to get are opinion across mean nothing. This is going to be the worst thing to ever happen to mankind, and we will have no one to blam but the person in the mirror.

I think Al Gore is a savior to our planet! For he has put his reputation on the line and is known world wide . There is no time left, goverment must act now to stop Co2 emissions from over heating the earth. Drastic measures are needed and Al Gore is the man to do it. Only a leader of the world can stop Co2 and global warming. Lets do it people. Only vote for people who will end fossil fuel emissions from destroying the earth. People all over the planet earth use your vote to save the earth.

#239, I'll ease up and enjoy life when greedy oinkers stop futzing up the air I and my children breathe.

“Few people know what I know. I’ve been in the tropics, I’ve flown in airplanes into storms. I’ve done studies of convection, cloud clusters and how the moist process works. I don’t think anybody in the world understands how the atmosphere functions better than me.”

That's great he had some exciting field trips and the scientific community is richer from his research. This statement however doesn't fill me with faith about his ability to see the forest for the trees.

The only reason I can think of that anyone is arguing about it at all is business. If we all suddenly changed our consumption habits, recycled 100% of our waste, stopped clear-cutting trees and planted two for every one we took down, reversed the acceleration of the already massive spewing of carcinogenic gases and particulates into our breathing air, all in the name of global warming, even if it weren't true this would be a bad thing? Call it whatever you want. Call it dwindling oil supplies and that it's going to take whatever reserves we can muster to (try to) develop the next source of energy before we're all rudely thrust back into the stone age.

Business tells us to "do this, buy that, think this is cool, consume more". Despite the seemingly genuine smiles and warm, fuzzy stories they do not have our best interests close to their hearts.

The Tempest

By Joel Achenbach
Sunday, May 28, 2006; W08

As evidence mounts that humans are causing dangerous changes in Earth's climate, a handful of skeptics are providing some serious blowback

IT SHOULD BE GLORIOUS TO BE BILL GRAY, professor emeritus. He is often called the World's Most Famous Hurricane Expert. He's the guy who, every year, predicts the number of hurricanes that will form during the coming tropical storm season. He works on a country road leading into the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, in the atmospheric science department of Colorado State University. He's mentored dozens of scientists. By rights, Bill Gray should be in deep clover, enjoying retirement, pausing only to collect the occasional lifetime achievement award.

He's a towering figure in his profession and in person. He's 6 feet 5 inches tall, handsome, with blue eyes and white hair combed straight back. He's still lanky, like the baseball player he used to be back at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington in the 1940s. When he wears a suit, a dark shirt and tinted sunglasses, you can imagine him as a casino owner or a Hollywood mogul. In a room jammed with scientists, you'd probably notice him first.

He's loud. His laugh is gale force. His personality threatens to spill into the hallway and onto the chaparral. He can be very charming.

But he's also angry. He's outraged.

He recently had a public shouting match with one of his former students. It went on for 45 minutes.

He was supposed to debate another scientist at a weather conference, but the organizer found him to be too obstreperous, and disinvited him.

Much of his government funding has dried up. He has had to put his own money, more than $100,000, into keeping his research going. He feels intellectually abandoned. If none of his colleagues comes to his funeral, he says, that'll be evidence that he had the courage to say what they were afraid to admit.

Which is this: Global warming is a hoax.

"I am of the opinion that this is one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the American people," he says when I visit him in his office on a sunny spring afternoon.

He has testified about this to the United States Senate. He has written magazine articles, given speeches, done everything he could to get the message out. His scientific position relies heavily on what is known as the Argument From Authority. He's the authority.

"I've been in meteorology over 50 years. I've worked damn hard, and I've been around. My feeling is some of us older guys who've been around have not been asked about this. It's sort of a baby boomer, yuppie thing."

Gray believes in the obs. The observations. Direct measurements. Numerical models can't be trusted. Equation pushers with fancy computers aren't the equals of scientists who fly into hurricanes.

"Few people know what I know. I've been in the tropics, I've flown in airplanes into storms. I've done studies of convection, cloud clusters and how the moist process works. I don't think anybody in the world understands how the atmosphere functions better than me."

In just three, five, maybe eight years, he says, the world will begin to cool again.

We sit in his office for 2 1/2 hours, until the sun drops behind the mountains

Regarding: Comments by Stefan

Dear Sir!

I a Swedish citizen and reading your comments surprizes me.
What I wonder is if you are true to your self for posting claims like that. Self denail is the word that comes to mind, because you seem like an average intelligent person. You should be able to connect the dots. I´m sure of it.

I have watched a downloaded version of the movie about Global Warming with Al Gore and it is pretty much common sense and not very surprising that our world will come to an end, much sooner than it normally would, due to the combined "efforts" of all the worlds contributions of Co2´s.

It saddens me to learn that the educational system has faild in your country, the gretast nation in the world (in my lifetime). But, every Empire that has ever existed has, or will sooner or later, be doomed to die. If the majority of the citizens in the States continue to believe like you do, and work hard to spread your values and beliefs, Tellus future is dark, very dark. But before that your beloved country will not be spared - mother nature (not God) will show you straight up the end results of global warming.

/ Sorry about the spelling. Doug

Hey you guys!!!
I got a true story for you guys, about a year ago I was driving a cab for a certain company that services WDW and at the time WDW had an Exon/moble conference there. Well I thought I was lucky enough to grab a fare from WDW to the Airport. The passengers happen to be three Exon/moble employees. Two were in sales, and one an executive... during the trip, I had asked them about employment opportunities with their company, especially in oil drilling or some other high paying job...I was interested in knowing what they would say; they suggested that I should try the gas conveinet store. I thought, these guys think I’m not fit to clean their shoes... At the end of the fare it was time to pay it, the fare was 68 bucks the tolls are extra and they were $1.75 the total was 69.75. The executive paid for the fare but get this... he thought the tolls were my expense which it is not, and it is clearly stated in the cab. He gave me 70 bucks and told me to keep the change. A quarter boys and girls just a quarter, after they retrieve their luggage the executive ask me for a receipt, I told him I just didn't have any more, then he asked me how was he going to claim his reimbursement and I said well I guess they will just have to take your word for it. During our winter last year, the oil companies made record profits and congress asked for a good will donation for those who were underprivileged. Well boys and girls does any one remember which oil company helped those who couldn’t afford the high-energy cost??? These guys are the most selfish and greediest people on the earth. The only exception is when it comes to themselves. Isn’t a shame that Venezuela gave NY and NJ residents free oil for their boilers and American oil companies were silent? They have made soooo much profit from us all on gas.

OK Everybody, let us say, for argument's sake, that the environment IS going to hell in a hand basket, OK? If none of this was based on reality, why would they be debating it in Congress? Why would the World Bank, of all organizations, help Al Gore do the movie The World Cup? Yes, there is money to be made in selling "carbon neutrality". Still, I really think people are sticking their heads in the sand. And then comments are made by US lawmakers that saving the environment would ruin the economy! Duh! Well, the economy will be ruined anyway when the environment changes to the point that it can no longer be ignored. So, it is not a question of "if", but a question of "when" we are going to make the necessary and painful changes. Lastly, Sterling Burnett's comments simply show a lack of intelligence. Of course, he is probably betting that most of the American public is not smart enough to second-guess what they hear from idiots like him.

You can see it in his eyes all the money he got from the oil companies.
Al Gore said it best, "it is hard to make someone understand something, if his salary depends upon him not understanding it."
By the way, this people are bashing Al Gore thinking that, may be he might run for office in 08. Bunch of Cowards.
