Last night, Bill O’Reilly attacked ThinkProgress and Media Matters, falsely claiming we encouraged our readers to complain to NPR because their contributors appear on Fox. Watch it:
A quick fact check:
1. ThinkProgress never encouraged anyone to contact NPR, nor did we criticize them for allowing their contributors to appear on Fox. We noted that one of their contributors, Mara Liasson, falsely claimed “it’s Democrats not just Republicans taking money from Abramoff.” In fact, only Republicans accepted campaign contributions from Abramoff.
2. MediaMatters did encourage its readers to contact NPR, but only to note the inaccuracy of Liasson’s statement, not to complain that she appeared on Fox. In fact, MediaMatters is a strong advocate of more ideological diversity on Fox, including the O’Reilly Factor.
3. The NPR ombudsman, Jeffery Dworkin, claims ThinkProgress and Media Matters misinterpreted Liasson’s comments due to a misplaced comma in the original Fox transcript. In fact, we didn’t use the Fox transcript; we transcribed the segment directly from the video. (Note: this isn’t the first time Liasson has gotten her facts wrong about Abramoff’s contributions.) Nevertheless, we updated our original post with a link to Dworkin’s column so readers could judge for themselves.
Transcript:
O’REILLY: [T]he ombudsman for NPR recently lashed out a two dishonest far-left websites, Media Matters and ThinkProgress, for urging their readers to complain the National Public Radio because some of their contributors appear here on the Fox News channel. Jeffery Dworkin wrote, “The blogs encouraged people to complain to NPR and hundreds did, many with a surprising level of rancor and vituperation, which was shockingly intense, even in these times of take-no-prisoners-and-shoot-the-wounded political debate.” The ombudsman has learned firsthand how vicious the far left blogs are. All decent Americans should reject these haters.
I personally complain to NPR that they have scumbag contributers. Chief among them,
Juan Williams.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:24 amNPR is not what it says it is. It is just more propaganda. If it had a lick of sense, it would pull its reporters from Iraq, pronto, and not look back.
I refuse to give them a single penny.
I don’t hate anybody.
Bill O’Reilly is at the top of my list of ‘journalists’ of whom I can do without. Just another paid propagandist for the US gov.
A Statist through and through. He has a lot to learn.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:25 am“vituperation” is the official name of the sex act BO performs with his loofa.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:25 amI believe BO is “vituperating” in that screen capture…
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:27 amFox continues to characterize anyone who is a dissenting voice as a hater. The hatred and bile that spews from the mouths of O’Riley and Coulter and the rest is OK for them. Giving these jokers the time of day is a mistake. Fox is not news and never will be, it is the RNC propoganda machine plain and simple.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:27 amJust learned this morning that TempurPedic is a “proud sponser” of O’Reilly’s radio show. About a year ago I requested information from them regarding their space-age mattress. They’ve been sending me junk mail ever since. I’m planning on sending them a note about ol’ Bill.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:28 amGreat picture of that loony loofa lover. Falafel!
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:31 amYour screen shot of O’Reilly is exactly how I always picture him. Like the boy scout that he is, prepared to blurt the ‘F-bomb’ at any instant.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:31 amYou tell those haters what for Bill! I am going to look for some white women to bang so that I can propagate the species because the Mexicans are coming.
-John Gibson
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:32 amWe’re getting to BO folks. GOOD JOB!
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:32 amLong before blogging there was NPR. NPR is the best. Always will be. Later on, folks. I’m going to a funeral for a Major who died in Iraq.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:33 amO’Reilly is an liar and a lazy bastard. He’s not interested on what was really said on these blogs.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:34 amWhy give this fool any space at all……I’m outta here…had enough of O’lilie posts to last a life time…….Blessings
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:34 amSo, someone appearing on FoxNews lied, then another person at FoxNews lied about them lying, and called the people who called them on the lying liars? This is more confusing than an Al Franken book title! Seriously, why waste time and space on O’Reilly? He opens his mouth, he lies. This is not a story, and no one not yet convinced will be convinced.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:37 amlet me get this straight, you are trying to say mr. o’lielly is a liar?
heh,heh,heh
we knew that, eh?
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:38 amSo you’re not encouraging us to demand a retraction from Bill O’Lielly? (just kidding).
It’s Bill O’Reilly. When does he ever report facts?
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:42 am…so now who’s the hater Billy boy?…
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:44 amBillboe’s show is on fox, that should explain everything he says.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:45 amWhat irks me about Liasson and O’Reilly’s FOX talking heads babble is their prominent affiliation credit of “National Public Radio” under their nodding heads on TV. That’s rethug code for ’screaming liberal’ by the way – when Liasson and Williams seem to be more center-right than anything. These two spend WAY more of their time at FOX than NPR. Liasson does maybe one story a month on NPR, that is essentially lazy, transcribed cocktail chatter from her Republican friends, and seems to be on FOX daily. NPR should identify their reporters as “FOX news analyst and occasional NPR contributor” on-air. Dvorkin really missed the point on that column.
May 23rd, 2006 at 10:50 amhow can BO be worrying about this with the War On Memorial Day right around the corner!!!

May 23rd, 2006 at 11:00 amThe biggest hater of them all is O’lilly , a firt class mysogist .
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:00 amAs for Npr , the day they cut the ombilical cord , from the Us gov and become independent they will resume getting money from contributors , right now they are part of the bushie propaganda machine.
And here I always thought I was a decent American. Thanks for the wake-up call Bill. I officially reject myself for blogging here.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:02 amOne reason I believe Bill O’Reilly and Ann Coulter and John Gibson is they’re such good Christians.
So it couldn’t be a lie, because I’M sure they wouldn’t bear false witness…
Would they?
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:06 amOH billie….shut up….I emailed NPR letting them know they BEG for money all the time, yet get money from all over, plus TAXPAYER money and still want the public to give give give….THEN slant the programs to the right wing nuts. Sorry but they don’t get a cent from me.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:07 amthis fox attack on the first blog i read each day is a good sign.
it means you are a factor in the national debate.
that is great
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:08 amFollow the leader:
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:11 amWhen the Bush administration is losing, start another war in the name of terror.
When Fox News is losing, start another war in the name of hatred.
I want to throw up.
Every attack from Bill is a badge of honour. Congrats!
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:15 amHelp me here. I don’t remember the parsing of who gave who to whom when Idiot Ronnie Earl was trying to indict Delay. Now all of a sudden since it was only an associate of Abramoff (whom he lobbied for) and not him directly it’s somehow clean? At least the republicans were upfront in taking LEGAL campaign donations from Jack. The only twist will be if they can prove if those LEGAL contributions bought votes in congress. Now we have a demonstrated example where Harry Pelosi err Reid was against a tribe casino until they donated to his campaign and then wrote a letter on their behalf. To the physically blind that is what legal eagles call: Quid pro quo (Latin for “something for something”). Culture of corruption my ass! Mr. Kettle please meet Mrs. Pott.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:17 amLet’s keep up the pressure on Dild O’Reilly!
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:17 amIf he is focusing so much of his time on two blogs, then you know we’re burning a hole in the side of his head and it’s going to be sooner rather then later when he finally blows his stack and totally flips out.
Now that’s something I want to see!
Dild O’Reilly having a nervous breakdown on Fox/Saudi News.
#29 – Retired Republican Soldier, or Mr Change the Subject,
The topic here is BO and his forever lies — not dirty republican money.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:19 amRRR – are you not dizzy yet?
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:22 amCulture of corruption my ass! Mr. Kettle please meet Mrs. Pott.
Comment by Retired Republican Soldier — May 23, 2006 @ 11:17 am
With tired and annoying cliches like that, why don’t you also become Retrired Republican Blogger? That would definitely serve your country.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:25 amThink Progress may want to think about contacting their attorney. There are laws in this country protecting people against slander and libel. If O’Reilly is attacking your credibility [and it appears that he is] then you may have a strong case against him in court. Like cockroaches, smear merchants do not thrive very well in sunlight. Hitting them in their collective pocketbooks should draw the attention of O’Reilly and Fox “News” and Murdoch, besides landing a solid blow against what little reputation that they have left.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:26 amFar-left? Harldy. TP is just left of center, unless you are so extremely far to the right that you can’t even see the center,as is the case with B.O.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:30 amI think in order to “hate” someone you must dislike them to the point of wishing them harm. I do not wish bodily harm on Bill O’Reilly. But if anyone deserves censure, misfortune, or whatever metaphysical justice a karmic universe can dish out, this guy is in third place just behind Rush Limbaugh. (Ann Coulter is far out in front. . . She’s different. I would happily drink a beer in celebration if she got hit by a car.)
The point is that calling Think Progress “haters” is just more bullshit propaganda from the right wing, who are in real fear that their quest for not-just-national, but global, domination is self-destructing before their eyes. Progressive blogs that fight back are labelled “haters” in the Soviet-style newspeak that seeks to make lies the truth, no matter how bizarre of absurd.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:30 amO’Reilly has shown his character (or lack of) over the years, and it isn’t pretty. Most rational, thinking, realists already understand O’Reilly should be ignored at great lengths.

Retired Repub Soldier:
As Zookeeper references in #31, please point us to Media Matters’ and TP’s requests that advises their readers to “complain the National Public Radio because some of their contributors appear here on the Fox News channel.”
Give us the quotes and then link to them, please.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:35 amDecent American and BO: the sexual harasser of subordinates, loofah king, mister falafel, should not be mentioned in the same sentence!
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:36 amI’m arrogant,like Bill O.,just smarter.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:42 am#29 – You’d better stop using non-English language if you want to remain a Republican! They’ll tar & feather you for your non-English words!
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:46 amThe NPR ombudsman, Jeffery Dworkin, claims ThinkProgress and Media Matters misinterpreted Liasson’s comments due to a misplaced comma in the original Fox transcript. In fact, we didn’t use the Fox transcript; we transcribed the segment directly from the video.
I also think that it is worth noting that you also provided a link to the video itself.
Visitors to this site were able to watch exactly what Ms. Liasson said and how she said it — and judge for themselves. Mr. Dworkin was misleading when he implied that all that any of his internet critics had to go on was the transcript.
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:48 amJust to conteract the “spin” by Mr. Retired Republican Soldier:
“Deep in the plea agreements won by Justice Department lawyers are admissions by the defendants–Abramoff and his cronies, ex-DeLay aides Tony C. Rudy and Michael Scanlon–that they conspired to use campaign contributions to bribe lawmakers. Even though these gifts were fully disclosed and within prescribed limits, the government said they were criminal, and the defendants agreed. This aspect of the case has received little attention. But it is sending shudders down K Street. If such prosecutions were to become commonplace, the paid persuaders of Washington and their big-money clients would be dealt a body blow. If prosecutors begin to assert as a matter of routine that lobbyist gifts and campaign contributions are a form of bribery, it could open up a whole new front on the decades-old (and largely ineffective) effort to break the nexus of money and politics in the capital.”
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/0606.birnbaum.html
“Campaign finance laws are built on a legal fiction. To wit: Electoral donations are considered within the law even though they are actually bribes at root. Think of them as “legalized bribery.” Through bundled contributions and PAC giving, industries, labor unions, and interest groups of all stripes try to persuade lawmakers to vote their way on the issues they care most about. Donors do not express their desire just that way. They use euphemisms like “buying access” to wink and nod their way toward the same thought. But the truth is the truth. Interests give money to buy votes. Unfortunately for those interests, lawmakers receive funds from so many sources, and also sometimes make their legislative decisions based on factors that have nothing to do with money, that the contributions do not always produce the result they desire. Still, the basic fact remains. The dollars would not be offered unless the donors hoped they would lead to a very specific result.”
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:52 amNews Flash! O’Reilly decrys “rancor and vituperation”!
May 23rd, 2006 at 11:57 amWhat a clown.
“The rancor and vituperation, was shockingly intense, even in these times of take-no-prisoners-and-shoot-the-wounded political debate”…”If you cross Fox News Cannel, it’s not just me it’s [Fox President] Roger Ailes who will go after you. I’m the street guy out front making loud noises about the issues, but Ailes operates behind the scenes, strategizes and makes things happen so that one day BAM! The person gets what is coming to them but never sees it coming. Look at Franken, one day he’s going to get a knock on his door and life as he’s known it will change forever, That day will happen, trust me.”
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:02 pmHey Judd… if these people have named your blog personally, and was giving incorrect information about it, you can sue Fox for Slander and/or Libel.
Sock it to ‘em, bud!
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:03 pmLets be cognizant of the peddling, manipulation, and influence peddling the Bush Admin has had on NPR. It has been a strong frontal assualt with some resistence. Clearly you can see its influence in yet another objective field that becoming tainted.

Bush Frontal Attack On NPR Fails,
But New Approach Is More Stealthy
By William Finucane
Well then, now that the U.S. House of Representatives has pulled back its guns and allowed the full $400,000,000 in federal funding to go to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the station supporters out in the nation can sit back, kick off their shoes and relax. The public broadcast crisis is over.
Not really.
Most of the people who support the public broadcasting stations read more deeply than the headlines. That is why they like the public broadcasting network, it offers much more.
Here, the “much more” is the real story.
Republicans – no, no, not traditional Republicans but rather Bushwhackers who are way more conservative than most of the traditional GOP rank and file – have not conceded the race for the public airwaves. Instead of trying to choke off the public television and radio airwaves, which stirs a firestorm of opposition – as the Bushwhackers expected and recently tested for strength and durability – they have simply moved to Plan B, they will try to co-opt public broadcasting.
THEY HAVE PROPAGANDA AND BRAINWASHING AGENDAS FOR MEDIA, SCIENCE, AND EDUCATION
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:04 pmI could be wrong, but the pic that accompanies this section seems to show O’Lielly saying something no decent person would utter on family TV. At least if I read his lips.
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:09 pmSame to you Billy Boy!
Another interesting thread on the Bush manipulators on NPR and Public airwaves.

May 23rd, 2006 at 12:14 pmAnyone who has ever watched the Fox propaganda network’s so-called “roundtable”…
…knows full well that Juan Williams and Mara Liasson are to Brit hume and Bill Kristol…
…what Colmes is to Scum Vanity…
…”ideological pygmies” tag teaming against WWF heroes in the right wing world of political wrestling (theater)…
…neither Williams nor Liasson (like Fox) have an ounce of credibility…

May 23rd, 2006 at 12:15 pmDear Unbelievable (Post #33):
As much as I cannot stand the trolls on this site, this time, I must agree with Retired Republican Soldier.
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It’s a human condition, not a political one.
It applies today only to the Republicans in DC for no other reason than the fact that the Dems are out of power totally.
However, when I was a young man in college, I remember a certain Democratic party involved in a certain S & L bailout scandal in Irvine, CA. Do the words “Keating Five” ring a bell? The only Repub in that mess was my boy, John McCain.
In my mind, he redeemed himself with the McCain-Feingold law that set the records clean.
All the others were Dems who needed a good pounding (which they got, starting with the retirement of Sen. Simpson of California and ended in 1999 with the retirement of Sen. Glenn of Ohio. The Dems got what was coming to them.)
Today, it is the Republicans’ turn. It is my truest hope that their party will light up the crucible to “burn off” the bad elements in their party (which they have only begun to do with Rep. Cunningham in prison and Rep. DeLay quitting Congress.)
But, please, do not merely limit the “Culture of Corruption” to Republicans. The Democrats’ hands are dirty too!
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:18 pmBut, please, do not merely limit the “Culture of Corruption†to Republicans. The Democrats’ hands are dirty too!
Comment by MrBlueSky — May 23, 2006 @ 12:18 pm
I didn’t limit it to just the Republicans – but they sure have done that to themselves. The Democrats aren’t currently as corrupt – just spineless. And anyone who knows me knows that I am not biased when it comes to removing corrupt politicians. Why I’m an Independent.

So, according to Bill, does this mean the neocons can’t hang out in here with us anymore? Aw – darn!
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:24 pmCaption contest:
Mr. O’Reilly, Keith Olbermann stuck your loofah where?
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:25 pmHate me Bill O’Reilly. I dare you to hate me.
I am you. I am you with your integrity intact, your soul unwounded, your loyalty undivided. I am the citizen you say that you are, the man you pretend to be, the patriot you envision. I am what your wiser choices would have been. I am the sum of your conscience. I am your viceless, taxpaying, family man of faith – you, in an afternoon dream.
I am an American forged from a line of Americans who earned their character on foreign shores during war, and the halls of industry during peace.
I am the deep and wide gene pool of America – a pool wide enough to lauch that glorious ship of freedom for which you’ve bought a ticket for but are afraid to ride.
I have the freedom of choice, and I am the decider.
I have a pact with those who govern me, and I call it the Constitution.
I pledge allegiance to the flag because it stands for the Republic, but it is not the Republic itself, it is only cloth.
God is my witness, whether anyone likes it or not.
And you may hate me, but you must hate these things as well, for they are me.
And I am a liberal.
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:27 pmWhat is this??? Is the wacko right doing a two fer on the American people??? First, you have the torture czar gonzo gonzales threatening to torture…scuse me…prosecute any media outlets that print the facts and now you have Loofa fallafel o’reilly attacting internet media aka the blogs. The talking points this morning must have been, “Progressive left determined to attack America.” Boy…If they had have been this aggressive attacking Osama bin laden, 9/11 may never have happened.
This made my day. We have entered the conversation. AirAmerica, Media Matters and think progress should form a stategic alliance along with all of the other left outlets. Randy and Mike warmed my heart yesterday when the pointed all of the attacks on the media and how the last bastion of truth, the press, is now being threated.
They are trying to silence our voice. 49% is not a mandate. Almost half (even more if you count the voting fraud) did not want this man or his administration in office. We will not shut up. We will not back down. We will not be bullied. This is not Nazi Germany. This is America billo and we want change. We will not go gently into that good night.
The religious right and thier minions have hijacked this country. When I go to church, I serve a Righteous God. He will not continue to stand for victims being left on rooftops, greed in all branches of government, corprate fraud and embezelling. The don’t want him to come back and handle this. He will send out one giant wave and clean everything up and start over…(Remember noah?)
We must take America back. Free speech. Free press. Free-dom. For every citizen. It is our God given right.
The revolution starts…NOW.
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:29 pmYou got it, Unbelievable!
“aren’t currently as corrupt – just spineless”
Well said!
(Perhaps they took their share of the Rove/Neo-Con money to “take a dive,” as it were!)
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:29 pmJeeeeez. These guys can’t stand competing with the truth, can they? Reminds me of the famous quote from Adlai Stevenson: “I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends… that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.”

May 23rd, 2006 at 12:34 pmHas anyone noticed the similarity between Bill O’Reilly and Max Headrum? I think it’s the same guy (or whatever it is), 20 years later!

Thank you for eating up everything I say:
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:44 pmBut please, please, don’t use the word ‘crucible’ again.
It’s bad enough it being daylight and all.
O’Reilly needs to turn down the remote on his butt-plug vibrator. He’s starting to sound like Ethel Merman.
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:49 pm.
I was one of those people who wrote to Liasson at an NPR email address, and this is exactly what I said:
If anyone has any problems with that, including the perennial “Worst Person in the World,” they can talk to me about it.
May 23rd, 2006 at 12:58 pm#19
Steve,
I couldn’t agree more. The argument you make is essentially what I wrote to Dworkin.
If she’s appearing as an NPR correspondent, she had better tell the truth, or face the consequences.
It is now apparent there are no consequences at NPR.
Another lost listener (I’ll miss Diane R.)
The letter to NPR, as well as this onne, were not prompted by anything but my ire.
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:01 pmExcellent point, Steve. (#19)

Certainly seems that way. But given the chance to return to the majority party – then, well, it will be dirty Dems for certain.
Until we get the money out of politics – doesn’t matter what party they call themselves – there will be corruption for most.
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:04 pmShouldn’t Bill just go by his initials? B. O.
I know that if Mr. O-LIE-ly is talking about Think Progress, it is an organization he fears, and one that is making some difference.
As to mr. B.O. (body odor): He is suffering from a chronic case of verbal diarreah, a condition that has lasted far longer than most cases – pity it is not fatal.
As far as his “power”….. Mr. B.O. over estimates his value and power in the world. He represents the idiots that support dumya, those with loud mouths, no morals (see his employees for this one) and a willingness to shred the Constitution. Those idiots that feel that spying on innocent americans is ok
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:07 pmDecent Americans should refuse to watch o’reilly this man make me feel like I have just walked through some of the lowest slime on this planet!!
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:16 pmWhen the truth won’t do, when propaganda is not enough, call your enemy’s liars, smear them good and above all never appear weak! The handler’s said: BO! Attack! Attack! Atta boy! Good BO! Have a Libby snack.
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:18 pm#69 Thot’s, Amen to that.
For every finger you point at another there are three pointing right back at you. All B.O. does is point his finger and he is describing his own issues everytime. All I hear is hate when he speaks and anyone who disagrees with him he calls a ‘hater’. Anyone with any sense can sit back and see and also feel this. He’s a scary dude.
Combat and verbal bludgeoning have completely forsaken listening in this entire political structure. I don’t see the Democrats as ‘weak’ for not ‘playing war’, I see them as ’smart’.
The march of the robots lead by Decider, Pickles, and Turdblossom makes all of history pale in comparison. Labeling ‘liberals’ and ‘demonizing the Democrats’ is ‘the game’, the entire game. I don’t know how anybody can be expected to lower themselves to their level in order to ‘play ball’. March on…blow up the world, yeah yeah yeah…I guess it’s just that time! Oh well!
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:33 pm“Nevertheless, we updated our original post with a link to Dworkin’s column so readers could judge for themselves.”
Would TP have done this otherwise?
May 23rd, 2006 at 1:36 pmI DON’T WATCH FOX, nor Bill Oreilly! He’s just an employee of the Bush Administration as TONY SNOW acknowledged recently they, at FOX, are!
Following it the descriptive language used by NPR about complaining bloggers: “a surprising level of rancor and vituperation, which was shockingly intense, even in these times of “take-no-prisoners-and shoot-the-wounded” political debate. . . .”
My thoughts on this subject: I’m for some pretty loud, strong, language at times, especially in the political arena, but do find some of the bloggers on most sites to, AT TIMES, be pretty much as described by NCR. I read THINK PROGRESS.org daily, sometimes several times a day, and comment now and then. In other words, I’m a big fan of yours.
So, I say here and now, that there are many times that using rancorous and “shockingly intense” language can do more harm than good, and bloggers can create a false impression of your blog as a whole.
We have been denied coverage in the main stream media and have been treated very badly, very badly, indeed. No one can understand our feelings of having the news that we were aware of having been supressed on the MSM. Some of my friends have told me that they thought the news I was telling them was just made up, because of no coverage on MSM. UNTIL some of it began to surface on their evening news. HINT: Time to tone down the gutter speak, bloggers! You must pay attention. Rove is out there with his PR crap, and is putting out fake news daily to make blogs look bad. There are trolls on here that use that language on here and are PAID to do so. The usual readers know that! I have no intention of aiding and abetting therm in their cause.
Get the picture?

“Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It’s a human condition, not a political one.”
Don’t blame humans for this! It’s not power that corrupts, it’s greed and stupidity, which are conditions of dehumanization. Stupidity is not created by G*d’s creatures..it’s created by the influence of his nemesis. Are you saying humans just can’t resist? That may very well be the case, but it’s definitely not the ‘human’ in them that corrupts.
Most of us don’t have any trouble ‘not doing’ the things as stupid as I have seen this administation do. Dare they cop out and blame it on their ‘humaness’. It’s definitely not God’s fault that these idiots have abducted the planet. They better check the source of that little voice in their heads one more time.
May 23rd, 2006 at 2:16 pmDworkin’s May 15 article, Guilt by Association: The NPR-FOX Connection, contains many material innacuracies. His defense that the whole misunderstanding was caused by a misplaced comma is laughable. There is a public misperception that Abramoff gave money to both Democrats and Republicans because news organizations and people like Dworkin and Liasson are unwilling to speak the truth plainly and clearly. Perhaps NPR is so worried about offending the right-wing radicals of this country, that they go out of your way to allow this kind of misperception to continue. It is not enough to continue reporting a “he said, she said” debate. It NPR’s job to inform the public. The facts are staring Dworkin, and Liasson, in the face and even when Liasson is caught in a bold-faced misrepresentation Dworkin still won’t admit the truth openly and clearly. I do wish that Dworkin would stop villifying the internet community and start taking responsibility for informing the American public about the facts, clearly and HONESTLY. Our country and it’s citizens deserve nothing less.

Most of us don’t have access to billions or dollars of tax money either. It would be interesting to see who could resist becoming corrupted by that. I mean, there probably is a percentage of those who are attracted to those positions for the wrong reasons – probably even most. But, in theory – it’s easy to judge when you don’t have the temptation before you. Personally, I’d like to pass that test before I start speculating. Especially since I believe it is the nature of all living things to ‘eat while there is food’ – since you don’t know when the food will become available again (why the body stores fat for ‘just in case’…).

May 23rd, 2006 at 3:13 pmYou really must get your facts straight efore you simply regurgitate what you see and hear on Fox News.
Harry Reid representsIndian tribes. His state is Nevada. They are his constituents. Of course, everyone is allowed to contribute to their senators. It is bribery that is in question — a quid pro quo – and that is what the Abramoff cabal is guilty of.
Obviously the Republicans are trying to deflect the trash that is surrounding their people in office. I will say this, though, Democrats are not sinless, but the difference is that Democrats punish their own. Pelosi has called for an investigation and Jefferson may lose his committee seat. I can’t say that Hastert has made any move whatsoever to investigate anyone in his party and there are many in his House.
Democrats open windows – Republicans think their farts don’t stink.
BO calling liberals “haters.” What a joke.
May 23rd, 2006 at 3:19 pmThe hatred, bile and venom spewing from the mouths of BO, Coulter, Ingraham, Limbaugh, Savage, and all the company of FOX news is such that they should all choke on it. Not only are they full of hatred, but the hate is based on their own phony news.
Unbelievable – “Most of us don’t have access to billions or dollars of tax money either. It would be interesting to see who could resist becoming corrupted by that. …”
I don’t have a problem with resisting crimes that would destroy little children with bombs.
Nor would I have trouble resisting crimes that would rob our seniors of their retirement.
Not a problem to pay taxes to our beloved country just because I have more than others. It would not make me feel better to pay less than my fair share.
I could resist breaking the laws, and violating my oath to preserve and protect our Constitution.
On and on! (blah, blah)
My people. who are truly AMERICANS, were here in 1650. (some before). I am a white, Christian woman with Cherokee heritage, who is NOT a Republican.
I’m on the internet day and night, reading and sharing. Rarely commenting. One thing you can betcha boots on, I’m working hard to help our country.
You can push back from the table. It’s good to exercise! Get busy! There’s work to be done to prevent disaster, and vote these SOBs out of their “esteemed” positions of their offices of thievery in our land!
You’ve got it! I AM ANGRY!

May 23rd, 2006 at 3:53 pmGuess I’d better finish my statement.
It matters not one whit to me if the criminal (office holder) is a Democrat or Republican, fire his/her royal behind frim office, should he/her be fortunate to escape receiving the sentence for treason, which in my view, is the crime.
Reid is too wimpy and a weak leader. He should have stood up to Frist long ago, and with fire and brimstone in his voice. Not sniveling, the word “urge”. A man who should be a powerful force, …, groveling around before thieves! = Replace him with a strong progressive democrat. No middle ground to be fought.

Are you kidding? The Republican’s kicked DeLay to the curb in case you forgot! The Democrats don’t punish their own evidenced by the fact neither Clinton or Gore was investigated by an independent counsel for their alleged DNC fund raising misconduct.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_U.S._campaign_finance_scandal
“President Clinton announced in February 1997 that he thought there should be a “vigorous” and “thorough” investigation into reports that the People’s Republic of China tried to direct financial contributions from overseas sources to the Democratic National Committee. The president stopped short of calling for an independent prosecutor, saying that was the decision of the Justice Department.”
“The Democratic National Committee eventually returned the money donated by the Temple’s monks and nuns. Twelve nuns and employees of the Temple refused to answer questions by pleading the Fifth Amendment when they were subpoenaed to testify before Congress. [47] Vice President Gore said he had no idea the Temple meeting was financial in nature:
“I did not know that it was a fund-raiser. But I knew it was a political event, and I knew there were finance people that were going to be present, and so that alone should have told me, ‘This is inappropriate and this is a mistake; don’t do this.’ And I take responsibility for that. It was a mistake — Vice President Al Gore on NBC TV’s Today show, Jan. 24, 1997.[48]”
“Democrats open windows – Republicans think their farts don’t stink.”
Yeah right! LOL! It depends how high on the Democrat totem pole you are as to whether or not you get investigated or not…

May 23rd, 2006 at 5:28 pm#85 – “It depends how high on the Democrat totem pole you are as to whether or not you get investigated or not.”
Pres. Bush?!? Never “investigated” for any of his lies nor his flip-flops.
Remember when Pres. Clinton was being “investigated” for an extra-marital affair? what was Rep. Gingrich doing during that witch hunt? He was sleeping with a staffer while his wife was undergoing treatment for cancer. You have some very interesting, and very telling, double standards.
By the way, Rep. DeLay was kicked to the curb by a Democrat with a backbone: Ronnie Earle. It was the Republicans who wanted to bash a Democrat for holding a Republican to standards. Go figure. Before you start calling Mr. earle “partisan”, check his record. He goes after ANYONE who breaks the law, even himself! And he’s gone after more Dems in Texas than Reps. Interesting how Republicans selectively filter their information when they get desperate.
Believe whatever you want if it helps you sleep at night. We here at TP will go with the truth, not more of the “spinning” Republican talking points.

Double standards? I was just rightly pointing out the Democrats take care of their own and are in no way saints when it comes to investigating corruption in their own party.
“By the way, Rep. DeLay was kicked to the curb by a Democrat with a backbone: Ronnie Earle.”
Ronnie Earle is a slime ball and a political hack. Being from Texas I have first hand knowledge of his low handed tatics in which he had to go to MULTIPLE grand juries before one would finally indict DeLay.

Well, technically, they don’t truly hibernate (they are awake and still have bodily functions and the females give birth ). It’s more of a dormancy period because they are so large and food is so scare in winter that they are preserving their energy. Which humans do have to a lesser degree.
But that has nothing to do with why we gain weight. It has to do with the unreliability of finding food, and nature has a built-in survival system that we no longer need since we’ve industrialized food – which is only a trip to the grocery store away.
Here’s a hint – go read some non-fiction books. You might actually learn something and be able to contribute to a conversation instead of hiding behind your false arrogance.
Just a free dose of your own medicine to see how it tastes. Don’t like it? Then don’t dish it out. I’m very respectful to those who offer it return. You might try it.

You may not like the government’s behavior – but you are not a progressive (open-minded). You’re repeatedly demonstrated this by not providing any facts, using fallacious logic, ad hominem attacks, and trying to take the light off the fact that you have not one clue what you’re bitching about.
All you’re doing is dodging and evading the real issues because you are clearly incapable of discussing them. You just resort to juveinle tactics – trying to hide your ignorance. And then you twist what I have siad into something I neither said or infered once again with the hope that I’ll respond to your puerile behavior and be distracted from the fact that you have no argument or knowledge – just ignorant opinions.
You can keep behaving this way – but the only one you’re foolling, apparently, is yourself.
