Number of times Ken Lay’s name was mentioned during today’s White House press gaggle with Tony Snow, which began 30 minutes after the guilty verdict was announced.
Off topic, Judd, any one else having trouble with TP site this afternoon. Got to diffrent formats, one old and a new bigger version, diffrent format altogether. When I posted everything has been bouncing and deleted my post…What’s up are you or I being tapped.? LOL
A mythical White House reporter: Would you care to comment on the guilty verdicts rendered today in the Enron fraud and conspiracy case against the president’s long time political supporter Mr. Kenneth Lay?
As devestating as 9-11 was to our country, I will always regard the Enron rapeage as a bigger story for this era. It speaks volumes about this Kountrie$ character, or lack thereof. Very fitting to sentence Ken Lay on 9-11, who qualifies for a life sentence, but likely will strut with a one finger salute in the form of pardon. Possibly a wrist slap. Hey this is the New Amerika—wha’d ya expect justice?
Cheney/Bush/Lay Destroyed California’s Economy
Good discussion on Franken’s show today: Tom Oliphant suggests that the >$45 billion whack job done by Cheney/Lay on Californians (utility bills quadrupled overnight, and have never receded) is what really propelled the economic recession of the following years, NOT 9-11. Remember the secret Energy Task Force? Lay also secretly met with Schwarzenegger .
Oliphant sums it: Cheney’s flabby arms embraced the Enron business model and California was doomed.
Good summary, with great historical links to the Cheney/Lay/Bush best-buddy days: http://www.wnymedia.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1352&Itemid=35
We’ve fixed the double posting. The stie is running slow because of a link from the Drudge Report. When he removes the link, things should return to normal. In the meantime, it’s hard for us to post (and easy to make mistakes like double post).
Why ask Tony Snow about Ken Lay? Snow is a smooth-talking propagandist and would glibly deny that Bush and Lay ever were close friends at all.
Tony Snow was given a 20 minute interview yesterday — is he the White House herald – or is he a policy maker? Apparently our illustrious news media think he’s the greatest thing since bottled beer.
It will be interesting to see what President Bush has to say today, given his past denials regarding his long friendship with Lay. After all, when the Enron scandal first exploded, President Bush on January 10, 2002 offered one of the biggest whoppers of his presidency:
“I got to know Ken Lay when he was the head of the-what they call the Governor’s Business Council in Texas. He was a supporter of Ann Richards in my run in 1994. And she had named him the head of the Governor’s Business Council. And I decided to leave him in place, just for the sake of continuity. And that’s when I first got to know Ken.”
Sadly, a mountain of correspondence between the Bush and Lay suggests otherwise.
Corporate Media does not deem the Lay and Skilling convictions newsworthy. The story is therefore not newsworthy. After all, it is old news. It was sooo pre 9/11. 9/11 changed everything. You’re either for us or against us. Ken who? Remember 9/11. Support our troops. WMD’s. Those poor people are so much better off now that Katrina forced them to move to Texas. You go to war with the army you have, not the army you want. Terrorists, enemy combatants! We do not torture people. Secret renditions. Waterboarding. Kenny who? Build a fence! Protect the unborn! Amend the Constitution to prevent gays from getting married! 9/11 changed everything.
9/11 changed everything.

The conviction of a friend of the Commander-in-Chief for his role in the largest corporate failure in the history of the Country is not worth covering by Corporate Media’s White House Press Corps.
Reporter’s phone records searched in an attempt to track their sources.
This is official Bush Administration behavior as well as official White Whore-house behavior. They distance themselves from that kind of stuff and the braindead media lets them get away with it.
Tony Snow is prohbited by contract at Faux News from uttering any disparaging words about Enron, Exxon, and energy policy. Cannot blame poor little Snowball for just doing job. Deceiving the public is hard work…
You should at least read what you you use in support of your argument. You posted

Sadly, a mountain of correspondence between the Bush and Lay suggests otherwise.
Bush clearly says that he first got to know Ken Lay in 1994. The so-called mountain of correspondence suggesting otherwise comprises of only a handful of letters and mostly several quick-courteous notes to one another—31 correspondences in all—starting in 1995, and ending in 2000 that averages to five a year, or one every two months or so. That’s quite the mountain! And not of it disproves the quote from the president.
The one that doesn’t focus on the wrong part of a comment in order to avoid the point. I keep forgeting that I need to be extremely direct with most of you here.
Here’s the reporters question—Tony, the President often mentions corporate crime in his speeches, as recently as yesterday. We’ve had the Enron convictions now over the noon hour. Any comment from the White House?
Here’s Tony’s answer—Well, any comment is that the Justice Department — you know, we congratulate the Justice Department on successfully concluding a highly complex conviction, a set of legal proceedings that led to the convictions today in the Enron case. I mean, the administration has been pretty clear there is no tolerance for corporate corruption. And furthermore, the Justice Department has been going aggressively after those who are involved in corporate corruption.
Here’s ThinkProgress’ spin—0. Number of times Ken Lay’s name was mentioned during today’s White House press gaggle with Tony Snow, which began 30 minutes after the guilty verdict was announced.
Justice had been served, what more needs to said? Does failing to mention Ken Lay diminish Bush’s no tolerence for corporate corruption in any way?
The reporter who asked the question, and ThinkProgress are obviously trying to drag Bush into this when they know it has nothing to do with him.
I doubt that any answer would have sufficed. No matter how Tony Snow answered the question, it would have resulted in the trivial harping you see posted in the above comments.
The reporter who asked the question, and ThinkProgress are obviously trying to drag Bush into this when they know it has nothing to do with him.
How are you so positive? Are you taking it on blind faith? Has there ever been the slightest investigation? No. This Administration met with Energy Corporations behind closed doors. Kenny Boy was a friend of the President and one of his biggest contributors. Do you know that there were no ethical and/or legal violations occuring in those closed door sessions? Was there some sort of deal cut where the Administration would look the other way while Enron manufactured energy shortages in California?
Or do you just prefer the bliss of ignorance?
If you know that this has nothing to do with Bush, please publish your information and sources. That would settle this debate.
Ken Lay.
Talk about having a prison bitch name custom-made for you.
Btw, in case you missed it earlier, I have Bob Herbert’s newest up, in which he discusses the “Disposable American” in the workplace.
