Congress’ Memorial Day Message to the Troops: Make Do While We Go On Vacation

On Feb. 16, 2006, President Bush requested $72.4 billion in supplemental funds for continuing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Just over three months later, the current Do-Nothing Congress has yet to pass the bill, and is instead busy fighting over how much pork to keep.

Earlier this week, the conference committee that is negotiating a final bill announced that it would not complete the bill before Memorial Day. Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA), the chief House negotiator, said, “We have communicated with the individual military services and while it is not preferable, they have informed us that they can tolerate a delay into June,” Lewis said. “I am confident that Congress will clear the measure quickly after the Memorial Day district work period.”

But Gen. Peter Schoomaker, the Army’s chief of staff, takes a different view from Lewis. Because the Congress has failed to act, he said the military will be forced slow down its supply operations for the troops. According to the Hill:

Gen. Peter Schoomaker, the Army’s chief of staff, said the Army will be forced to slow down some of its operations’ backbone because Congress decided to postpone the completion of the 2006 emergency supplemental until after the Memorial Day break.

“We have to pull all these levers to slow down,” Schoomaker said at a breakfast sponsored by The Hill. In order to stretch its funds until a new infusion of cash is available, the Army will have to slow down its logistics and supply operations among other things, he pointed out. […]

He added that it is “ironic” the Army has to resort to such measures on the eve of Memorial Day.

Failing to pass legislation to fund the troops seems an appropriate Memorial Day message for a Congress that is on schedule to meet for the fewest days of any Congress since 1948.

    So much for the Democrats being the ones who are against the military.

  4. Clif says:

    What a way to “support the troops”

    Keep up the good work guys and maybe the troops will find a way to show their appreciation back at ya…

  5. Jay Randal says:

    Look the Congress works so hard for 100 days a year, they think they deserve vacations every other week > lol.

  6. Jay Randal says:

    78 Senators today voted for General Hayden to run the CIA, so they have to get out of town fast before we the people march on DC with pitchforks next week!

  7. Theresa says:

    So, Congress’ Memorial Day holiday is now being called a “district work period”. So, if I call my representative’s office on Monday, he’ll answer the phone? Not!

    Sheesh.

  8. Clif says:

    Anvilhead I thought you would have signed up already ..I hear the military is wanting a volunteer for a human mine detector and you would be to obvious candidate

  9. Zookeeper says:

    #7 – My thought, exactly, Theresa. Support the Troops — except for holidays, long weekends, “district work periods,” or ever… Jeebus.

  10. dlet says:

    I think “ironic” has been used too often when describing this administration and Congressional majority leaders and “moronic” not enough.

  11. Just plain mad says:

    Stupidity and incompetence in the continuation of planning and execution of this war to expand the empire continues to amaze and reflect just of how little importance our people in uniform at the front lines are to both the civil and military leadership of this nation. There is no war on terror here. It’s a war on liberty and justice. Our “leaders” come up with ideas and make up the rules as they go, just as a group of grade school kids would playing war using their imagination and improvisation. All reasons and rules are available for change at any time (i.e. reasons for going to war).

  12. lib4 says:

    ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    When the Repubs want to get something done THAT IS POLITCALLY ADVANTAGEOUS
    they wil get it done in a heartbeat… (see the sealed Jefferson documents, immigration thru the Senate, ANWR drilling – all in the span of the last 4 days)

    However when it comes to the troops …Repubs could care less because the war is not “polling well”

    That is disgraceful and pathetic……

    Don’t forget the Terry Schaivo ordeal…during which Bush temporarily postponed his vacation and hopped a plane back to Washington to participate. Oh…and didn’t Congress burn the midnight oil on that one, too?

  14. Nicholas says:

    Good thing we got that “English as official language” thing done before the break. It would be terrible to celebrate memorial day with that left undone.

  15. Jackie Rawlings says:

    I hope the parents of all our troops see the way President Bush and the GOP use this day to have fun and raise money while their children are dying for the lies. Cheney is laughing at all of us (parents of soldiers) while he got his 5 deferments. We the American people helped Satan aka Bush/Cheney/Rummy and all GOP some Dems kill our children and we did nothing about it. So we are just as wrong as this Administration. How many soldiers have to die before Bush is finished with stealing the oil.

  16. Cyra Brown says:

    It is truly a tragedy that our soldiers are expected to shoulder all of the burdens that are placed upon them, because ‘they volunteered’. But our Congress, a “Coalition of the Willing”, if you will, does not feel the need to do their part in fighting this ‘War on Terror’. Instead they struggle over getting as much as they can for their own issues, troops be damned. Oh yes, that is something to be proud of. In the mean time, why doesn’t the President issue an ‘Executive Order’ for companies to just give the Army what it needs right now, and give them an I.O.U. for it. We’re good for it, aren’t we?

  17. Wayne says:

    First, they divert to Iraq, which they lied to get us into.
    Then they did not supply our troops body armor, untill there was an uproar from the public.
    They didnt armor transports, untill an uproar from the public.
    They had Halliburton supply tainted water and supplies to the troups.
    They are forcing wounded troops to pay for their hospital bills for war related injuries, even charged them for their food while in the hospital.

    Now this?

    The trolls are probably afraid to post this thread ( on subject), But I would like to hear them explain how the repugs are “supporting ” our troops in light of this.

    With support like this, who needs insurgents?

    And they will all wear their flag pins, salute the flag and go home to rest, leaving the troops in Iraq to “tolerate” the delay.
    When Congress WANTs something for themselves, they work “overtime” into the wee hours, give up vacations and get the business done — every soldier in Iraq should remember this and vote the useless hypocrites out of office in November.

  20. Just plain mad says:

    #13 makes a good point. We should not forget the Shiavo case. Every politician that didn’t believe in our courts and neurologists findings over several years should be made an example of. Using religion falsely is as low a any human can go in what was obvious to people in the field of neurology and cognition and to the courts. Pimping religion in politics to continue the pointless feeding of a woman that had no cognitive abilities is a sin that should not be forgiven at the polls. The amoral pseudo-scientists should be made an example of and voted out of office.

  21. Just plain mad says:

    #19 right on. The people that wear their patriotism on their lapels and garments don’t seem to hold it in their hearts and minds. They are selling patriotism, not living it and believe in upholding OUR constitution and bill of rights. This includes the MSM which has been one of the worst offenders.

  22. Ho Chi Minh says:

    Who could ask for better proof that “support our troops”, is just an empty right-wing slogan. Action speaks louder than words.

  23. Ron says:

    They need to slow down… to a halt. Let the soldiers eat cake. Send them a few flowers. It’s Memorial Day weekend, nobody wants to work. Roast some hot dogs, make a few s’mores, drink beer, and forget about those soldiers for a couple of days. They’ll get by. They’ve got to protect your liberty, that’s why they’re in Iraq. The oil will always be there. Don’t worry about it.

    What’s Memorial Day all about, anyway? I forgot.

    Would you rather be hunting with Dick Cheney?

    I don’t think this is as cut and dried as it seems.
    I have thought to look at the letter from Bush to the Senate where he explains what the money is for.
    It can be found at http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/02/20060216-6.html
    And reads thus:
    “The request also provides funds for the extraordinary security and operating costs associated with supporting U.S. diplomatic activity in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
    This comment can be interpreted as more No Bid contracts for the Security Company of Choice, Halliburton.
    Also-
    “The request also includes funding to address urgent democracy-promotion activities in Iran.”
    Now, do any of you trust what the Admin says they have in the plans for Iran….?
    I don’t.
    I think our Senate is being CAUTIOUS….yes, it’s new and yes, if it’s true we need to get used to it. But for some reason I am thinking that maybe….just maybe….you know, with Elections coming up and all….that the Senate is thinking twice before Green Lighting everything straight thru. I think that the majority in the Senate has taken the time to READ what ALL the money is for and that is why they are hesitant to send it thru on the basis of a few items.
    Granted, if they REALLY cared, they would vote to suspend their Vacation this time around, review the letter, and submit changes.
    But we can’t have everything.

    Just trying to find some hope, here.

  30. Martin from Germany says:

    Why should Congress do more?

    1. The Reps are doomed in the Midterms, no matter what they do
    2. Despite 1, they will block anything the Dems want to do
    3. Hence the Dems won’t do anything
    4. Even if Reps and Dems could agree on doing anything, Bush would:
    a) block it
    b) veto it
    c) ignore it

    So, whats the point? Responsibility? As we learned from the FBI probe Congress insists on on it’s absolute priviliges (”privilege” is latin for “private law” if you didn’t know that). Reelection? They already screwed up for good, even a lot of Dems will have to go after the midterm elections.

    They will just wait to get thrown out. And the next congress will not be able to do much either because Bush will be a sitting duck and impeaching him would just get Cheney to be president, and nobody wants that. US politics is stalled until 2008 at least, and pray that it will not be Hillary who is nominated, the system could not take a shock like that right now…

  33. Bert says:

    Bush lovers laughed at me when I predicted, before the bogus war in Iraq began, that this crap was going to happen. Credibility is everything. The current administration and all of the “Bushtards” that believe in Georgie have not only destroyed our credibility within the world community, they’ve driven a wedge right down the center of American ideology. The only satisfaction I get these days is that the Bush loving bigmouths that I know from 2000 are pretty timid now. In fact, they wish to avoid talking altogether about the fact that they screwed up not only in ‘00 but again in ‘04. But then again, most Republicans would rather sink the ship than admit to the mistake. As far as Congress’s self-centered inability to support our troops at this time goes, after the Republicans themselves criticized anyone who even hinted about not supporting this war, this is just another nail in their coffin. Unfortunately, our troops are the ones suffering for their two timing ineptitude. Tell all the Repubs. you can to wake up and smell the coffee!!! And let’s get out there in November and vote these jerks out of office.

  34. Ken Previti says:

    To summarize everyone: corruption is at its highest levels; humanitarian beliefs are at their lowest; humane treatment of our wounded is unfinanced lip service; the honored dead are the poor and undereducated who are trained to do what they are told and receive mere flag draped coffins while their families are left in poverty; no actual accountability is at stake for those who are deciders; we strut like a leading nation when we are really a leading debtor nation whose companies and jobs have been sold oversees to subsistence or slave laborers; we speak “liberty” yet shift our honor to the “flag” waved in our faces by hypocrites; machines from political sponsors count our votes; talk TV and radio brilliantly propogandize those who have been quasi-educated or merely job trained; hope is at an all time low. When all is said and done, there will be nothing left to do but take back our country or watch it disintegrate to nothing. We must take it back!

All the people who died in REAL wars to fight REAL threats and to preserve REAL American freedom, I hope they aren’t hurting themselves too much today by spinning in their graves at 900 mph. I almost wanna dig up my great uncle who died on D-Day in Nomandy fighting Nazis (which Prescott Bush–George DUHbya BU$Hitler’s grandpappy FUNDED) and take his body back to France, just to spite you chickenhawks like Bill O’LIEly! Key word is ALMOST! I don’t do grave robberies ok!?

    How can you sit there and say you support the troops but yet say this is not a “real” war? To them it’s a real war they are fighting and when they have to see and hear these things “people have the right to say” just makes them feel like they aren’t being supported and looked down on like they are doing something wrong. You only hear the stories of the men and women that don’t want to be there, you never hear the stories of the men and women who do believe in this and would be proud to die for their country. Just last week we had a Soldier KIA from my home town and his family had said he was proud to serve his country and would be proud that he died for his country. You think that just for one day everyone could just stop pointing fingers and forget the politically bs and come together in your communities and show the real support you should be giving. What good are you doing sitting here pissing and moaning that you think Bush is wrong? If you think Memorial Day is about the long weekend and getting “wasted” and you forgot what Memorial Day was all about then you have no pride in your country and don’t care to educate yourself.

    Liz(bo),

    They ARE doing wrong!

    They’re occupying a country and a people who don’t want them there…

    I HOPE you get to experience that in YOUR neighborhood one day!

  42. Liz says:

    Well “Big Loser” I hope you realize that if they weren’t doing what they are right now there would be a very good chance that we would all experience that in our neighborhoods and everyone that thinks like you would be the first ones to complain why didn’t they do anything about it, you can’t have it both ways. None of you truly support the troops, you wanting them home doesn’t mean you support them, most of them are proud to serve their country. Why don’t you try to talk to the ones that want to be there and see it from their point of view (because there is some good being done) instead of only listening to the ones that don’t want to be there and running with that. You don’t because it’s easier to be against something than it is easier to be for something, you jumped on the band wagon like everyone else. That says a lot about you.

You talk trash on your “buddies” that aren’t with you. He knows he may not see some of his buddies again. You don’t feel like helping out your family today, so you don’t. He does what he is told. You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls. He walks the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists. You complain about how hot it is. He wears his heavy gear, not daring to take off his helmet to wipe his brow. You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong. He does not get to eat today. Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes. He wears the same things for months, but makes sure his weapons are clean.You go to the mall and get your hair redone. He doesn’t have time to brush his teeth today.You are angry because your class ran 5 minutes over. He is told he will be held an extra 2 months. He does as he is told. You call your girlfriend and set a date for that night. He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter from home. You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do everyday. He holds his letter close and smells his Love’s perfume.You ditch class to go to a movie. He goes where he is told. You roll your eyes as a baby cries. He gets a letter with pictures of his new child, and wonders if they’ll ever meet. You criticize your government, and say that war never solves anything. He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their own government and remembers why he is fighting. You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of the men like him. He hears the gun fire and bombs.You see only what the media wants you to see. He sees the bodies lying around him.You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don’t. He does what he is told. You stay at home and watch TV. He takes whatever time he is given to call and write home, sleep, and eat. You crawl into your bed, with down pillows, and try to get comfortable. 45. SergeiRostov says:

    Liz –

    If you actually ask the troops there, you’ll find (as the people who asked did) that the vast majority (72%) thnk they shouldn’t be there. Yet they stay – and want to go back – not because they believe in the mission, but because they don’t want to leave their buddies behind.

    Supporting the troops means:

    – deploying them as a last resort;
    – deploying them for legitimate reasons;
    – giving them a clearly defined mission;
    – giving them a war plan which will work;
    – giving them the equipment and forces levels they need;
    – making sure their orders do not lead to them committing war crimes;
    – having a clearly defined exit strategy;
    – getting them out when having them in is only making things worse;
    – giving them the help they need when they come home

    …none of which has been the case with this war.

    I suspect that someone close to you may be involved in this massacre called a war. Thus, you feel “overwhelmingly obliged” to support it. You do not support our troops by MISUSING them. Our troops are dying one by one for NO REASON AT ALL. They are NOT protecting us. We have plenty of nuclear subs in the world’s oceans to do that. Our troops are invaders and occupiers. We do not live in the Roman era. We don’t require ground troops to “protect” us.

    Wake up and smell REALITY.

    Hey SergeiRostov.

    In message 45 you make some really good points about how military should be used. I’ll even go so far as to say you might be right about Bush not meeting ANY of those points. However, as someone that went to Kuwait and worked with those soldiers going into and out of Iraq, you can shove message 44 where the sun doesn’t shine!!!!!!

    I’ve seen the pictures and movies of what Saddam and his pigs did, I’ve met a couple of people that suffered his invasion of Kuwait and I’ve seen the video of Zarqawi sawing off that young man’s head! I saw that video while living in an Arab country (not on base), and wondered if it might happen to me while Abu Gharab got all the glory the Bush-haters-without-sense like you could give it in the World media. You keep sucking the big media tit! They just love people like you paying their salaries and don’t give a rat’s butt about the truth or balanced reporting of the facts. All the time that Abu Gharab was being used by the Dems and media as a stick to beat Bush, pictures and videos of Saddam’s crimes were being released and ignored.

    Keep in mind dork, the US soldiers that commited crimes in Abu Gharab are doing the time. I know, in some of the time since I’ve been home I’ve been working at the base some have been tried at. The Marines that went apeshit and wasted those families (if they did) will face the music too. Guess what you ultra-Dumbacrat, they face(d) justice for those crimes by their own government, without an election having changed that government. Saddam and his butchers had years of getting away with it before we invaded!!!!!

  53. Tim - Bush-hater-WITH-sense says:

    Congress has proven its inability to do what’s right with this one. Just as Bush has. Getting rid of the Dumb-Democrats and Repulsive-Rebulicans is the only SURE way to get the country back where it should be. Unfortunately they have all the money they need to strangle politics thanks to the groups they steal for and we haven’t much chance of getting a strong moderate third party that will work. So we are stuck voting for least worst!
