ThinkFast: May 26, 2006

The new White House domestic policy chief, Karl Zinsmeister, altered his own quotes and other text that appeared in a published profile of him, originally written by the Syracuse New Times but later amended and posted on the AEI website. The White House claims that the alterations were “corrections” due to “misattributions” by the reporter, an unlikely story given that Zinsmeister emailed the New Times reporter after the interview to thank him for his “fair and thoughtful treatment.”

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Sen. Rick Santorum’s residence: “He doesn’t live here anymore.” The paper sent a letter to Santorum’s supposed residence in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania in March, only to watch the letter bounce back “with a sticker from the U.S. Postal Service checked as ‘Not Deliverable As Addressed — Unable To Forward.’”

In an e-mail and robocall message, Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) attacks his opponent, Zack Space, as too liberal because he appeared on Rachel Maddow’s Air America show. Ney calls her a “cross-dressing lesbian” who “uses a different name when dressed ‘in drag.’”

Meanwhile, two of Ney’s top aides have been subpoenaed in the Jack Abramoff bribery investigation. Paul Vinovich, formerly Ney’s top aide with the House Administration Committee, and Will Heaton, Ney’s current chief of staff, both accompanied Abramoff, Ney, Ralph Reed, David Safavian, and Neil Volz on an Aug. 2002 golf trip aboard a private jet to Scotland.

ABC’s Brian Ross stands by his story that House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) is under FBI investigation. “I think our story is accurate. We’ve gone back to our sources, and they believe what we reported was accurate as they knew it.” George Stephanopoulos, ABC’s chief Washington correspondent, called the implications “potentially seismic.”

“Deserts in the American Southwest and around the globe are creeping toward heavily populated areas as the jet streams shift, researchers reported yesterday. The result: Areas already stressed by drought may get even drier.

A British Joint Committee On Human Rights charged with evaluating the Blair government’s compliance with the United Nations convention against torture has concluded that the government has not adequately investigated allegations of renditions. The report states the British “should take active steps to ascertain more details about certain flights known to have used UK airports and suspected of involvement in extraordinary renditions.”

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has “ordered a probe of dozens of television stations” after a report by the Center for Media and Democracy found that at least 77 stations had “aired advertisements as if they were news reports” in violation of an FCC warning to disclose sponsors.

The data analyst whose house was burglarized, resulting in the loss of 26.5 million veterans’ personal information, routinely took home data for three years, without authorization. “It will cost at least $10 million to inform veterans that their personal information may be in the hands of criminals.”

And finally: It’s good to have friends in high places. “A 26-year-old college dropout who carries President Bush’s breath mints and makes him peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches will follow in his boss’s footsteps this fall when he enrolls at Harvard Business School,” the Harvard Crimson reports. “Though it is rare for HBS — or any other professional or graduate school — to admit a student who does not have an undergraduate degree, admissions officers made an exception for Blake Gottesman.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Shhhhhh- this is a responsible government action… Why we have a government ‘for the people’ in the first place. Don’t point it out or someone from the Bush Regime will find a way to cut the FCC’s funding and force Martin into retirement.

    It’s a twofer morning.

First, ask not for who the bell tolls it tolls for Bush and Blair. My take on their joint declaration of defeat is here.

After Musharraf stayed for a month the execution of an innocent man, there are now concerns that he will be murdered in jail. And see how a big Pakistani newspaper’s editorial is advocating that he be murdered. Mr. Bush is in the wrong country spreading liberty. The editiorial is a chilling reminder of who the enemy really is.

If I were a graduate of Harvard’s Kennedy Business School, I would be seriously pissed off. This act just dirtied the centuries old prestigious reputation of that $150,000 diploma daddy just bought me…

I dated a guy who graduated from the GSD at Harvard. He said the education he got wasn’t worth going $150,000 into debt – but the doors it has since opened for him (he grew up poor) sure are.

I had a friendly 30 min argument with the bouncer at my local pub about why politics is more important then sports, his claim was that politics dosn’t affect him at all, because he’s in the lowest income bracket, but sports do, because it increases/decreases patronage by sporting season, and by teams playing that night.
Also, some of my good friends watch AI and other such shows and talk about them the next day at work, I bring up the latest headline on CNN or other such thing, and their eye’s glaze over and I get the ‘thats boring move on to something else’ bit I’m sure you’ve all received before.

Partly why I came back to my home town to change careers. I knew I’d know people here and it would help. Granted I’m highly-qualified to be a science or architecture teacher – but let’s face it – people would rather hire people they already know. It gives you an edge.

And why politics IS a popularity contest. Look at Ray Nagin. The people of New Orleans could have picked a whole lot better. But they didn’t. Validation that people are more comfortable to roll in the misery of the known than venture into the discomfort of the unknown…

Sounds like another unknown history repeating itself… (so much for the victors always dictating history)…

“Pharaoh Ramses II was soundly defeated by the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh in 1294 B.C.E. Undaunted, the Egyptian ruler erected a memorial to commemorate his magnificent “victory”. The monument endured, and generation upon generation of historians paid tribute to Ramses’ military triumph. Only recently have archaeologists unearthed the truth about the Battle of Kadesh.”

unbelievable – I just saw on C-SPAN that Nagin was elected because of overwhelming support from republicans.

Douglas Brinkley, the author of the book “The Deluge” claims that Nagin is a Liberman democrat and that he gets support from local republicans because they know that a repub can’t win… so to them he is the best option.

Lonely, bitter, and afraid of everything that opposed his fragile belief systems I imagine.

I made a comment one Sunday to a very nasty neocon post that simply said “Church out already?” Several people made further comments, and Denny went nuts. It thinks I’m Satan and has been trying to harrass me ever since. He posts as all weird sorts of things.

It’s actually very funny and quite amusing how it thinks that the rest of us see the world the same way it sees the world. And that by trying to harass me, I’ll ’see the light’ – as will others. When, the reality is that it only re-inforces my rejection of gods and religion with its ridiculous behavior. Very funny stuff.

Mine do. The female also does tricks – sits, shakes hands and begs (totally adorable, and she knows it). The male plays fetch with wine bottle corks (odd, but as a kitten he pulled one out of an empty decorative bottle on the counter himself and droppedit at my feet to throw). They were raised to be affectionate and not bite. I have a hard time keeping the female out of guest’s laps. She thinks that if you are in her house – you should be petting her.

I am glad you asked Jules!!!

He did mention them… he said that they might be able to help me answer a very difficult question.

Denny & also much smarter than my father – please help a confused Christian Brother answer this Biblical Conundrum.

The other day I was talking to Jesus and he asked me a riddle… he said what do you think my genetic make up was… I said what do you mean Jesus?

He said you know that a haploid individual is about 23 chromosomes away from being able to survive right… I said that’s right… he said then you would agree that I had a full set of chromosomes… I said that sounds right to me.

He then said if I had a full set of chromosomes… did I get the entire set from my mom or did Big G. contribute half?

He said if I got the entire set from my mom… wouldn’t that make me a clone of Mary… or if I got half from my dad then wouldn’t that mean that the elements of the universe existed before he and that he is therefore just a product of the nature?

    I said damn Jesus that’s a good one… he said I know.

He then said that he had to run… something about a party in heaven and him having to convert a dozen water towers into wine dispensers.

So Denny & also much smarter than my father… if you can… please help out a confused Christian Brother here

    Sincerely,

    Confused in Chattanooga

Does she know what she wants to ‘be when she grows up’?

Both of my parents were unplanned pregnancies. I however, was a wanted child. They read to me, took care of me the way they had wished that they had been cared for, and gave me opportunities to be ‘better’ than they were. I was and am very grateful for that – and I tell my mother on a regular basis (my father is dead). She knows I’m smarter than she is. And she knows why. She’s the one who pointed it out so that I would do something with my life of value. The only one who has a problem with that is someone who doesn’t even matter or exist in the relationship.

Even in the strictly genetic inheritance view of intelligence you can be smarter than at least one of your parents… unless your parents have exactly the same IQ I think that this would be mandated.

If your mom is a rocket scientist and your dad is a scientologist… and you get half of your genetic info from each… then you can expect to be halfway between mom and dad in terms of intelligence…. The average of the two… smarter than one not as smart as the other.

    78 Senators Should Retire Today!
    Friday 26th of May 2006
    By Jay Randal

78 Senators of both political parties, today, voted YES for General Hayden to become the Director of CIA, so those 78 should tender their resignations from Senate!

The 78 Senators have proven to America that they NO longer represent its citizens, and are paid stooges for the Bush Regime, so they should announce retirement!

Replacing the 78 with new blood in the Senate would give our nation a chance to start fresh in Washington, and end the corruption that manipulates Senate!

General Hayden’s assurances of not being connected to the Pentagon are ludicrous, so anyone who believes his nonsense is proven to be gullible and/or paid off!

Americans have a right to uncorrupted government Representatives and Senators, so we the citizenry do demand that bribery of politicians comes to an end!

The Constitution says clearly that if at any time our government fails to represent the people, then we do have a right to abolish that govt. and start a new one!

I don’t think they care what you do Denny.

I’m not an architect anymore. And we explained to you the last weeks of school – which is now over – expect for paperwork, which I can do while posting. I’m almost done actually…

See, most women’s brains are wired for multi-tasking. There are days I haven’t posted until the end of school. Go look at last Friday. I wasn’t around until after school. There are others. You just can’t notice them because you’re so blinded by your dementia. And your irrational need to be right.

I’d give you the phone number of my principal, but even I don’t dislike him that much…

Why are you incapable of minding your own business? Whenever I have a disagreement with a man, you immediately jump in and begin chastizing me like I’m supposed to be demure and reverent.

Don’t post about me and I won’t respond to anything you say. Just like I said. But keep insulting me and you’ll get an earful. Also, just like I said.

I was told that something similar happened to Ryan (not that I am equal to Ryan, but I did support him and vice versa). That once a couple of them gang up on you – it’s like a feeding frenzy for the rest of them. katy just always appears in the middle of it and acts like a Mother Hen. No clue why.

The difference is, I don’t take Denny, Santo, Mighty Mouth, or katy lunatic seriously. People either like me for my willingness to call it like I see it, or they don’t. Works well for me actually, because I wind up with friends like you and Zoo and Clif and GWSC and Gregor. Intelligent and sane people with a grasp on reality and a great sense of humor. But occasionally, I run into ultra senstive people with a chip on their shoulder who want to shut me up because they can’t handle either the truth or opposition. They don’t. And they won’t.

I’ve been here a while now. And I post a lot. If you stick around as long, you’ll probably get your share of it, unfortunately, being a smart and independent woman. Part of the ’system’ I suppose. Just can’t let people like Denny matter. Because, really, if they did in any regard, they wouldn’t act like this.

  180. Jules says:

i think un’s problemwith me began weeks ago, when, after reading the posts one morning and returning that afternoon to see that she was STILL arguing (while saying something like “i’m not going to argue with you”) about 9/11 conspiracy theory, and i posted a message to her, as a “friend”, that is was ok to NOT have the last word, to let it drop (ala clif?), something i learned in a parenting class (2 kids in college)… that was left alone, but when i posted another time, another day, to explain why it was so important in this coming election to NOT vote independant, she let loose with the “i don’t need a mother! quit telling me what to do” thing…

You know, I can get like that. A subject comes up in an area that I have extensive knowledge (rare, but it happens) and I want so badly for people to understand my points I kind of ignore theirs. I am human and that is what happens when you get a bunch of humans in a room….on a thread.

I am sorry that the two of you have had a disagreement, but we are not like neo cons. We disagree with each other and it’s OK. We do not all have to have the same talking points that Rush and Rove give them.

Who cares if I’m in here arguing with someone? Mind your own business about my personal habits. You just can’t stand the fact that I don’t want to hear from you. Ever since I spelled it out (since yo couldn’t take a hint when I just ignored you) you’ve been going out of your way to be a jackass to get a response from me. I can’t believe you mentioned Chihuly! I love his work… and have been wanting to see the museum. Have you been?

I’ve actually been considering moving there at some point. Have friends out there. They love it. I think only the weather concerns me. I need the sunshine on some regular basis. :)

#215- Jules, there is a hotel in Memphis, called “The Peabody”, that has an interesting event that might work for you. There is a group of ducks that live in the hotel, in the Penthouse, no less. Twice a day they take a little trip, in the morning, they ride the elevator down, and proceed to a fountain, where they hang out for the day. In the evening the get back in the elevator and go home for the night. I understand it is a very popular thing to see. These must be the”Lucky Ducks” I’ve heard so much about.

Well everyone – it has been an interesting day on Thinkfast to say the very least.

I am off to Barnes and Noble w/my daughter to look at books. Thanks unbelievable for the book suggestion and trueblue thanks for the offer. Maybe we’ll meet up at the beach.

Unbelieveable I am not too worried about ice at the moment, but being washed away is a big concern!!

I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday weekend.

#229- If the weather here is a worry for you, it shouldn’t be. Take your pick of a climactic zone, and we have got it covered! From rainforests, to almost desert-like conditions, we’ve got it all! You can go from mountain to ocean in a few hours. I have not been inside the glass museum yet, no reason why not, but it is about 5-10 minutes from my house. Union Station, old railroad depot, now a federal courthouse, has several of Chihuly’s pieces hung on the back windows, lots of them. A local pub, “The Swiss” has some of his stuff too. Last summer, the “Tall Ships” paid us a visit, that was just amazing! There is much to enjoy here, even if it is only for a short time. Your friend can back me up, I’m sure.

A minor point, perhaps, but not irrelevant given Zinsmeister’s other past statements.

Idiot Congressman admits to panicking about imaginary gunshots this morning in DC.

    From Yahoo news:

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A US lawmaker admitted to being the source of an erroneous report of gunfire in a Congress office building that led authorities to shut down a large part of the legislature’s sprawling complex for several hours.

Republican Representative Jim Saxton (news, bio, voting record), speaking to Fox television, said he was in the elevator at the garage level of the Rayburn House Office building, when he heard what he thought was gunfire.

“I heard what I thought to be between six and ten shots,” the Republican lawmaker said.

“It sounded exactly like gunfire to me. It was not of a backfire nature. it was the sharp crack as comes out of a weapon.”

He continued: “I dove back into the elevator, rushed back to my office and asked my chief of staff to report what I had seen or heard to the Capitol Hill Police, which she did, and that started the chain of events that unfolded over the course of the day.”

The report prompted police to lock down the Capitol dome building and Rayburn for more than five hours, while they searched in vain for a gunman, trapping lawmakers, visitor and office workers in the congressional complex.

Thats right, I am an old cranky son-of-a-bitch, before any of you jump on it, but at least I have the integrity to stick to a topic, wherein a whole big bunch of you think this site is a personal trip for you.

Get real folks, who wants to read all your patter. Not I. This is a fine site, why do you all have to ruin it? At least try to.

    Paul,

Take Denny, Mighty Mouth, and the numerous other cantankerous old grouches that lurk around here bitching about people being human – and go form your own think tank. You could call it “Misery loves Company” or “I HATE EVERYTHING (including myself)”. That way you all could sit around and bitch about all the great injustices in the world such as people who post a joke or some personal information on an open forum. Nevermind Global Warming or the lies of the Bush Regime.

There are a a dozen other current threads for you to go read and post within. But you instead wasted your time, and ours, to post your rant about utter nonsense. If anyone is a ‘boob’, Paul, it is you.

Amazing that you haven’t managed to fatally injure yourself. Really.

  262. unbelievable says:

    Denny,

So, if your father was an alcoholic – you too should become one? Or any list of atrocities that he might have committed? That’s what your biblical nonsense is advising. Christ, you are an amateur. No wonder you think re-posting quotes I already intentionally posted on a public forum is some how supposed to be effective at who knows what. The GOP is truly wasting its pittiance on your efforts. But, to TP’s amusement.

You really should get rid of your steak knifes. And lock your own medicine chest. It can’t be very much longer now before you become a statistic of a self-inflicted injury. You are definitely a Darwin Awards Winner for 2006 – in the making..

That’s you alright Denny – violent. Why I suggested you lock up those steak knives and bottles of iodine. You’re quite capable of hurting yourself. YOur visciousness in here has demostrated that repeatedly.

Oh, and good luck with that bed wetting problem.

    ?

  271. unbelievable says:

    You, denny, are delusional.

‘No gods’ includes your version of a God. It is the same as all mythological creations that do not exist.

I am not your trained seal. And you’re just as inane in French as you are in English.

  272. Denny says:

    # 274.

Nice out on the French lesson-it’s sad really.
Next time you’re bragging on your French and Italian skills,I’ll pay particular heed to your version of Dieu.
    .

  273. unbelievable says:

If you want a French lesson – go take a class.

Being condescending and obscure is just flat out demented. Dieu is god. And “my right” is Christ. What else would a nut who has been quoting the Bible mean?

As for the one prior – it is nonsensical out of context. Just like everything you post in English. You’re just trying to act like you’re stumping me when you’re just being a jerk to make yourself feel better about that fact that you have no arguments and the best you can do it to use obscurity to make yourself look knowledgable. Only it’s just as transparent as all your other psycholtic tricks, and desperation.

  274. Denny says:

    # 275:

Seixon is so right about you.
He expressed the same thing I’ve told you for weeks now.
You are an absolute miserable hag.
You lie about what you say:You lie about what others say:
You,like Rove,pidgeon-hole:And worse of all you lie about your accomplishments.
All this to climb to the top of whatever sh!t-pile you think you’re on.
YOU are not well. Now leave me alone.

  275. unbelievable says:

Leave you alone? That is the funniest thing I have heard…. You’re the miserable wretch following me from forum to forum trying to embarrass me because you are clearly psychotic – and when it backfrires – you tell me to leave you alone. Hilarious! Can’t stand the heat – get out of the kitchen. This is a forum for heated political debate. You aren’t manenough to handle that – then go to myspace where you belong.

You’re the one who makes the rovian smear attacks, and then blames me for using the facts to win debates. It’s what you lunatics do when you can’t beat the mind – you throw yourself on the ground and cry like the victim you think you are. Oh, no – she hurt my feelings. No I didn’t – you are just too weak to handle reality. Stop blaming me for that you intolerable mess – it has nothing to do with me.

Now, Denny, go make an appointment with a therapist. Make several.
