“The Bush administration is beginning to debate whether to set aside a longstanding policy taboo and open direct talks with Iran, to help avert a crisis over Tehran’s suspected nuclear weapons program,” the New York Times reports. Said former deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage, “Some people in the administration think that diplomacy is a sign of weakness. In fact, it can show that you’re strong.”
“Some people in the administration think
That is a debatable statement if there ever was one….
May 27th, 2006 at 1:00 pmI highly doubt Bush would solve this by diplomacy > most likely a press diversion!
May 27th, 2006 at 1:01 pmThis is a tad confusing. I thought the Chimp’s policy was that “we dont negotiate with turists.” Or is that just tough guy talk during a campaign?
May 27th, 2006 at 1:17 pmOf course they should engage Iran in diplomatic talks. In a reasonable administration, it would have great value. But if the diplomat is Bolton, Rumy, Rice, Darth Vader, or the Chimp-In-Chief, I think you can understand why Iran would feel it needs the nuclear option. Insulting, antagonistic, and threatening are the first weapons of choice for this crew, followed up with heavy doses of incompetence, arrogance, and sociopathic policy.
May 27th, 2006 at 1:32 pmMaybe someone in the Administration pointed out to Mr Bush that testosterone is not a key ingredient in foreign policy. Would someone please slap some sense into these idiots. Of course we need to negotiate!
May 27th, 2006 at 1:34 pm“Some people in the administration think that diplomacy is a sign of weakness.”
Yes, Mr. Armitage. And unfortunately for the rest of us in thew world, those people include the President, the Vice President, the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense. This administration’s concept of “diplomacy” is more along the lines of walking up to the other country’s representative, smacking him upside trhe head with a tire iron, and telling him, “Now, STFU and do as I say.” These people (in our government) are not interested in diplomacy, they’re only interested in obedience. Which is why I worry that they will start World War III.
May 27th, 2006 at 1:51 pmProblem: Iraq recently told Iran that they could pursue their nuclear program with its blessings… provided they didn’t do it on Iraqi soil. This can’t make Bush very happy.
Now, if you slept in, Mo Do warns us that we’ve met the enemy in Kaditha… and it’s us.
May 27th, 2006 at 1:52 pmI believe the true source of any kind of real diplomacy is humorously enough coming from the new government in Iraq who is supporting Iran! They dont want Iran to have nukes…but are in complete support of their nuclear energy program and said the US needs to talk directly with Iran’s President. Imagine that…the guy’s been running an occupied country while facing mass murders, terrorists and suicide bombers…all while having to deal with the worlds most corrupt company Haliburton…and he is still a better politician than King Georgie W.
I really thought it was funny during his press conference with Tony Blair, where our self appointed King said that the UN needs to step in and help any country that is being ruled by a self appointed government that betrays and harms it’s own people. Follow GW’s advice UN! break off all ties with the US until an independent body can investigate the corrupt Supreme Court appointed Bush administration! Then charge their treasonous asses as war criminals PLEASE! We the American People are desperate for your help!
May 27th, 2006 at 2:01 pmI really hope Bush ( Mass Murderer ) does speak to the iranians, after all they are doing Nothing wrong
seems everybody wants to have Nuclear fuel , libya, brazil etc etc

May 27th, 2006 at 2:19 pmLeftists tend to hate anything that has an image of being strong, good and successful. They hate America, they hate Western civilization, they hate white males, they hate rationality. The reasons that leftists give for hating the West, etc. clearly do not correspond with their real motives. They SAY they hate the West because it is warlike, imperialistic, sexist, ethnocentric and so forth, but where these same faults appear in socialist countries or in primitive cultures, the leftist finds excuses for them, or at best he GRUDGINGLY admits that they exist; whereas he ENTHUSIASTICALLY points out (and often greatly exaggerates) these faults where they appear in Western civilization. Thus it is clear that these faults are not the leftist’s real motive for hating America and the West. He hates America and the West because they are strong and successful.
May 27th, 2006 at 2:21 pmHow long will it be until the trolls come in here and say “Liberals aren’t for dimplomacy the way conservatives are”?
May 27th, 2006 at 2:25 pmRemember how well that worked out to not cut off talks to North Korea less than two months after the sophomore took office? Not so good. Have they actually learned something?
May 27th, 2006 at 2:40 pmD’oh! Not “Not” cut off talks in previous comment, but “Remember how well that worked out to cut off talks to North Korea…”
I’m a dope.
May 27th, 2006 at 2:42 pmA strong man would work this out with diplomacy, that is hard and takes brains. A stupid man would try and solve this by force, that is also hard, for the families with skin in the game, which we know you don’t shit for brains.
You are one of the weakest people I have ever had the displeasure of reading since I started posting here years ago.

Wow you are an idiot.
“Leftists” MADE America. Ever hear of those “looneys” George Washington (known to the loyalists as a weak traitor), or Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine? Ever hear of those guys? They were NOTHING like you. You therefore are unAmerican… get that? You are FOREIGN to the notion of what America is.
May 27th, 2006 at 8:16 pmThis is a man with brains – someone we can really get down to business with. I can’t wait to hear what Ahmadinejad brings to the table.
“Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation’s fury.”
“Remove Israel before it is too late and save yourself from the fury of regional nations.”
“The skirmishes in the occupied land are part of a war of destiny. The outcome of hundreds of years of war will be defined in Palestinian land. As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map.”
“They have invented a myth that Jews were massacred and place this above God, religions and the prophets.”
May 27th, 2006 at 8:32 pmoh boy – WordPress troubles again… might just be my ‘puter though…
but while i’ve got it, what to share this: today, on the drive back home, listening to Laura Flanders on AirAmericaRadio, she aired “an on the ground report from Iraqi journalist AYUB NURI”… he said the news of talks between US and IRAN could be “ominous”… that the US could put up such high demands, then say “well, see, we tried” and use that excuse to attack… shades of iraq…
unfortunately, the anvil-headed one may have a point…
May 27th, 2006 at 10:06 pm(p.s. – i still think you’re a parody)
Talk to Iran and see if they’ll host the next MTV awards…
They won’t want the satus of having nukes after that.
May 28th, 2006 at 8:45 amThis is welcome news and about the only positive thing Ive ever said on this site and i welcome the news gladly , Well done America
May 28th, 2006 at 9:37 amThere are some in the Congrss who are prevailing upon Bush to open a dialogue with Iran. It is only sensible to do so, but the boy-king prefers to rattle his saber and talk tough; the Bush doctrine of intransigence and belligerency is failing. We will see how the WH spins this, and more importantly, what they actually do.
May 28th, 2006 at 10:38 amOT – glad to see the TP site back up again.
“Israel is a rotten, dried tree that will be annihilated in one storm.”
May 28th, 2006 at 10:41 amIn order to have DIPLOMACY you must have DIPLOMATS and there are none in this administration.
May 28th, 2006 at 11:28 amTed,
Why are you so concerned with Israel? Whay should Americans be so concerned about who Israel picks fights with? Why do they matter so much to you? We don’t give a crap who Uraguay picks a fight with. Is it because you think that Jesus is coming back for you and he will be in Israel? Isn’t that basing foriegn policy off of religion? What happened to seperation of church and state?
May 28th, 2006 at 12:19 pmSpudge – you are the mystic, not I. What is religion, but a subversion of reason, of thinking, of humanity? Iran’s leaders are blinded by this disease and have proven their desire to go to any means possible to destroy not only Israel, but western civilization itself, in the name of a fictional Allah. By choosing to close your own eyes to the behavior and threat screamingly evident in Iran’s past, current, and future; by suggesting that rational discourse is not only possible, but the only means of dealing with the insane, you are guilty of the same fundamental errors any fundamentally religious person eventually falls prey to.
In the mind of the mystic, only one thing matters – feeling. Those idle feelings are the product of non-thinking and properly led you to your stated conviction that we have no business harming those who seek to harm us. Of course, such feelings are rooted in the devious and ultimately become suicidal, both in spirit and quite possibly in real terms if the leadership of Iran was to get its way.
Engaging Iran is important not only to show how deeply diseased Iran’s leadership is, but also to highlight how sick are those in the West who support them.
May 28th, 2006 at 1:35 pmIf diplomacy works to keep one American alive one day longer and keeps innocents safe and keeps all lines of communication open and keeps us from blowing each other to hell for apparently no good reason, well then I say lets build an army of diplomats. And also… if diplomacy keeps Mr. Bush from getting his ass handed to him by his own wife and it keeps peace in the Cheney household(for what it’s worth) and it keeps Gonzalez’s wife from breaking her foot off in his sorry ass, well then….I guess it’s o.k.
May 29th, 2006 at 8:08 pm#29- Ted, Ted, Ted. Sigh. Now if one was to follow your line of reasoning, are not America’s leaders also blinded by this ‘disease’, as you call it? And they have also gone far beyond any boundary of reason, in their pursuit of their goals, whatever they may be. You should hold them to the same standards, don’t you think? If Iran is “diseased”, then so is America, by your standards. And you want to be fair, don’t you? Otherwise, you would just be a hypocrite, and that’s not you, is it?
May 30th, 2006 at 12:11 amTerrific posts! I love the last few. Cracks me up and some very good insight.
