Cheney’s guy.

By Faiz Shakir on May 28th, 2006 at 6:13 pm

Cheney’s guy.

The Boston Globe reports David Addington, i.e. “Cheney’s guy,” screens legislation before it reaches Bush’s desk in an effort to remove any limits it might place on presidential powers. Addington is the architect of the “signing statements” that Bush has used to assert his right to ignore laws passed by Congress. More at Firedoglake.

    So he’s the bastard!

  2. Zookeeper says:

So without Cheney et al GWB might actually do something right or legal simply by accident?

Thanks for the best laugh of the night!

  5. And You Thought REAGAN Was Stupid says:

Bush and his egomaniacal chronies need to reread the U.S. Constitution. Perhaps Article 1 Section 1: “All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States

  6. EasyRider says:

Will some one please file suit against the government for not following the law that was passed by Congress? Then take it to the Surpreme Court.

    Please!

  7. American Patriot says:

That’s EXACTLY the problem with America today. People want other people to do all the work. Why can’t anyone think out of the box anymore? America has become lazy and stupid, spending WAAAAAAAAYYYY to much time bitching on message boards and not taking necessary action to bring about the change that is needed.

Why don’t we all organize and take to the streets in a massive protest? How about we all show up at the white house throw up the reich and shout sieg hiel for an hour. ANYTHING.

This douche-nozzle in the white house will NEVER take us seriously if we all remain just puddles in an ocean of shit. What’s it going to take to get you ALL up off your lazy asses and accomplish something?

    Something PRODUCTIVE. Something PROACTIVE.

    SOMETHING!

    ANYTHING!

    HELLO-O-O-O-O-O

  8. beavercleaver says:

Just remember kids: They won’t let you vote in elections while staying in the crossbar hotel. Remember , if ya don’t vote, ya can’t bitch!

  9. Marie says:

So we should be surprised? Cheney needs a team in order to reviewall the underhandedness and possible avenues for abuses of power.

#10, I was just about to shut down for the night when I clicked on your suggestion — you’re right. what an appropriate way to protest boy george.

  12. Max says:

#7, Did it ever occur to you that the reason throngs of people wouldn’t dream of joining you to “organize and take to the streets in a massive protest” is because 99% of the American public thinks you and your extreme left wing fanatics are certifiably WHACKED? It’s depressing to log in here and read just how far off the deep end people can become when they spend too much time reading an endless amount of each other’s phobia driven rubbish. But I do it because it REALLY motivates me to recruit everyone I can to get involved in advancing the cause of the right.

    IMPEACH BUSH!

  15. Briseadh na Faire says:

#12 – 99% of the American public thinks you and your extreme left wing fanatics are certifiably WHACKED?

Oh Omniscient One, Thou alone knowest the hearts of 99% of the American public. The pollsters have been deceived and are themselves bathed in the iniquities of their deception. Thou speakest for thine Holy Cause, the Cause of the Right: The Right to force all women who conceive to bear child, yea even children begat by their own fathers, yea even children born of evil rapists; The Right to Force all Religions on Earth into your One concept of Marriage, even banning what was once Sanctified unto the Lord’s people in ancient times when a man could have many wives; The Right to Wage War for Thy Profit’s sake; The Right to condemn criminals to death, even while being too full of sin to cast the first stone yourself; The Right to consolidate such wealth as the world has never seen into the hands of the True Believers of the Wholly Profit, that they might create dynasties of their lineage even to the End of Times.

Rejoice! For these are the Causes of the Right, and only 1% of the American Public opposes these Causes. How, then, can the Right not Prevail? After all, The Right does All in God’s Name.

The only way The Right can lose is if The Right is Wrong.

I wonder why so many voted for Cheney in 2004
i.e. by thn it was known that Cheney had much more power thn prior vp’s
so how come since the approval of Cheney has always been in the toilet
………how come more folks did not say..hey I am not going to risk something
happening to GWB and Cheney going from being co-president to the actual president
geesh—-maybe cause the media kept telling people- americans don’t vote based on who the VP—well why not -it is a package deal –and if the president can’t get his VP pick right—thn that speaks volumes about his decision making skills

So will Bush be the person to donate the heart when Cheney needs the heart transplant?

  21. Max says:

#15, I don’t claim to be omniscient, but I can assure you that your stand makes the average Democrat and the average Republican feel like they have a genuinely warm kinship for one another. If I were you, I’d look into a career writing for the Boston Globe, you’d fit right in! Either that, or you could work with pollsters to make sure poll questions are worded to properly reveal all that malice in our wretched administration. It’s just too bad they don’t allow editorializing the choices that way in the voting booth…then you’d really be on to something!

  22. Evil Spaniard says:

#18 Well, Cheney has no place on its body for a heart. He was born without one. And, his body would reject an implant of a heart because it would be a foreing body.

  23. Briseadh na Faire says:

    Max,

I don’t claim to be omniscient,

What bothered me was your unsupported claim about 99% of the American public.

the average Democrat and the average Republican feel like they have a genuinely warm kinship for one another

Yes, For whatever they’re worth, polls do show over two-thirds of the American public are united in their assessment of this Administration.

If I were you, I’d look into a career writing for the Boston Globe, you’d fit right in!

Fascinating! I’ve not read the Globe. You think biting sarcasm in the King James style would fit in? I wonder what they pay their writers…

Either that, or you could work with pollsters to make sure poll questions are worded to properly reveal all that malice in our wretched administration.

Ahhh! We do have a common ground: I too would like to see Corporate Media reveal all the malice in this wretched Administration. Being registered as an Independent, I do get a fair share of calls by pollsters. Some are independent polls, like Harris or Gallup. Others identify themselves with some consultant group name. I have found those thus far to be uniformly right-leaning polls. Their questions are designed not to elicit my feelings, but to try to force me to agree with their positions.

What are the causes of the right you support?

  24. Zookeeper says:

Stick a little toothpick flag with a pic of GWB in Max.

  25. Zookeeper says:

#15 – That’s great, Briseadh na Faire. You’ve been holding back on us. ;)

Jeez, GWB has arrived at Arlington National Cemetery for his photo op. Who makes pol wives’ clothes? Hefty Bag? Looks like an awfully casual affair — except for the military people.

#23. I think Max may be referring to the “London” Globe: http://www.shakespeares-globe.org/

  27. Briseadh na Faire says:

26 – The London Globe – brings back fond memories of being fortunate enough to see a production of Romeo and Juliett there in the summer of ‘04.

  28. Briseadh na Faire says:

Speaking of Dictatorship – there has been a Resolution introduced over a year ago which would allow virtually the same thing, especially given One Party’s control over the voting aparatus.

Thank you, Station Agent, for the lead.

  29. Max says:

Briseadh na Faire – Let me try my hand at being a prognosticator. Despite WHAT THE POLLS SAY, November will bring a re-affirmation of the right, in the face of an endless hurricane of left bias in the MSM and all the Ward Churchills in academia. I guess all us sheep just aren’t smart enough to grasp the left’s version of the “truth”, so we’ll once again vote the Republicans baaaaaaaaaaaaack into office (sorry, I couldn’t resist!).

  30. Briseadh na Faire says:

Max, I have made the same prediction, insofar as the Republicans remaining in power. It is an easy one to make: “It not who votes that counts, but who counts the votes.” I believe it was Stalin who coined that phrase. However, Republicans remaining in power should not be taken as a reaffirmation of the right. After all, no one took the “election” of Russian Prime Ministers (dictators) prior to the end of the Soviet Union to be a reaffirmation of Communisim, did they?

“Left bias” in the media is doublespeak.

You, however, have begged the question: What are the causes of the right you support?

  31. Max says:

Briseadh na Faire – So what you are saying is that elections in this country are rigged. Is that what you believe?

  32. coal_train says:

Was there a signing statement for the bill banning protests at military funerals? So Bush could protest against gays if he ever actually went to a military funeral.

  33. Max says:

“Left bias” in the media is doublespeak – in your opinion, not mine.

  34. Cobaltbay says:

The Republican Right Wing has studied the Constitution extensively and has brilliantly learned how to dismantel it piece-by-piece. They have used it to trample on and over the First and Fourth Amendments. When this did not serve them as they wished, legislation by the “Rubber Stamp” Congress is passed through “Closed Door Sessions”, “After Hour Meetings” or “Party Only” caucauses. If any Legislation is tainted with Democratic finger prints the Bush “Signing Statement” circumvents it. Damn! If a stupid citizen sitting just outside the Beltway can see it, maybe the “ED” effected MSM would expose it. “Never Mind.” They only cover “Sex” stories in government. (If only the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston GLobe, Chicago Tribune, LA Times and WSJ would stop hiring reporters from the Enquirer, Globe, Star, People Magazine and ET maybe they could get reporters who could actually write and investigate the crimes of this Administration that has cost America Billions of dollars and thousands of brave soldier’s lives. THAT”S CRIMINAL!)
I’m glad I’m not part of the 31% in America who believes this type of criminal behavior is patriotic and honorable.

  35. Max says:

Briseadh na Faire – You ask about what causes of the right I support, so I’ll attempt to succinctly oblige. I believe militarily, we need to do better at “speak softly, but carry a big stick”. Clinton practically dismantled our defense department, and Bush just now figured out that he should have spoken more softly. But just when it looks like the Dems may be coming around, algore comes up with his global warming crokumentary, deepening the well founded skepticism voters have for the far left. Economically, though I could never be accused of being “rich”, the primary reason I favor the right is to counterbalance all the Keynesians in this country demanding that the rich sacrifice all, not for the genuinely deprived, but for the good of the State and the “poor” people who choose not to compete. The left can’t seem to grasp that it doesn’t matter how much you tax the “rich” trying to raise the poor up and out of poverty, poverty will always be with us. Since Darwin will never again rule, those who should die off and decrease the surplus population of fools won’t be allowed to, because given the choice, too many choose to live in poverty over actually working for a living. The day the left acknowledges the fact that 50% of taxpayers pay 96.5% of the taxes in this country, I’ll admit they may finally be catching on. Having said that, you may be surprised to learn I am a full fledged communist when it comes to estate taxes, much to the chagrin of GWB and my “rich” friends. I believe the best solution to solve the problematic concentration of wealth problem in this country is an estate tax that is progressive up to a 99% rate for the super wealthy. Bill Gates Sr. has it right, this country was not built out of the benefits of unearned inherited wealth. You can’t hand the carrot to the donkey and expect him to pull the cart. Everybody should begin from the same starting gate.

  36. Cobaltbay says:

    TROOP DEATHS IN IRAQ
    Since war began (3/19/03): 2464
Since “Mission Accomplished” (5/1/03) (the list) 2327

    TROOP DEATHS IN AFGANISTAN
US Military Deaths – Afghanistan: 295

    TOTAL DEATHS – 2759

To Honor those who valiantly gave their lives, neither President Bush or Vice President Cheney laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery or gave a speech on their sacrifice.

Opps! I forgot! It was in a “Signing Statement” that Bush said they wouldn’t or shouldn’t have to honor this Nation’s braviest on Memorial Day. They could throw in a couple words in a speech or at a “Photo Op” or High School Re-union Graduation speech. God forbid they’d have to show up at Arlington National Cemetery. But what do you expect from a President who wouldn’t correctly serve in the Air National Guard or a Vice President whio dodged service.

  37. Cobaltbay says:

    Dear Max!

“…Bush just now figured out that he should have spoken more softly.”

    That pre-calculated statemnet was lame.
Gawd! If it took Bush 4 1/2 years to figure that out, this Nation is truly in the can. If the President was worried about “Wanted Dead or Alive” on Osama (which justifully would have been totally correct with the results of 911) what he should have acknowledged was the PHOTO OP of him landing on the aircraft carrier with the “Mission Accomplished” banner. only to be followed by over 2300 of our finest being sacrificed; do to poor planning, a under estimate of insurgency and no exit strategy.

  38. David B says:

Cobaltbay, nice post in #35, your theories regarding studing the constitution raise some thoughts. One observation is that the republicans still support the second amendment, at least for the time being. So some of us still bear arms out here. The post in #31 by Briseadth na Faire raises some history of Stalin regarding vote counting and continuation of the republican presents in power. Another saying of Crazy Joe was “No man…No problem”. At some point this crap will get corrected, if not by the corrupted government DOJ, then by those who love freedom, liberty and democracy the way our forefathers designed, not some post 9/11 wacked out 1984, corrupt, make the rules up as you go government for some but not all. The republican term of power must continue by any means, cause when its over, these asshats are all toast.

Can you begin to imagine how far under Bush and Cheney will have to live after they leave office? They won’t be able to see the light of day for the security circle that will have to protect them from all their current corruption while in power. There will be no Clinton or Carter Foundations and continued work to help the country beyond public service, oh, but that is a democratic virtue, I don’t recall any republican helping anyone after their term except Betty Ford and republicans don’t serve the public, they serve themself only.

So, all you right wing, neocon types of either party, enjoy your time in the sun, it will eventually end.

  39. Max says:

David B. and Cobalt, you have eloquently made my case (you’re WHACKED!) better than I could have myself. I wish you the very best in championing a political cause that so distorts reality it’s spooky. Good luck with that.

  40. bb says:

#40. It looks like you’ve run away. But just in case you haven’t, I want to congratulate you for your basic conservative Republican 101 argument method: when facts don’t work, claim the opposing view is crazy.

Re: your post #36: What do you propose we do with “the poor?” …presuming, of course, “we” are not among “them.” Shall we leave them to starve in the street? Or, shall we herd them to some reservation or camp in the desert or other suitably remote location?

  41. Briseadh na Faire says:

    Max, #35,

“speak softly, but carry a big stick”.

Do you realize that quote came not from the Right, but from a Progressive?
In other words, you support a military/international relations policy more akin to progressives than current conservatives.

Your position on “estate taxes” is the same as mine.

    One point for discussion:

Since Darwin will never again rule, those who should die off and decrease the surplus population of fools won’t be allowed to, because given the choice, too many choose to live in poverty over actually working for a living.

“Decrease the surplus population” sounds too much like the unreformed Scrooge. Who are we to judge whom is surplus?

“Given the choice, too many choose to live in poverty over actually working for a living.” How many is too many? I could as easily state. “given the choice too many living in poverty would prefer to work for a living wage rather than continue living in poverty.” There is a great economic challenge in this country. A Progressive/Idealist position would support full employment at a living wage for everyone who wishes to work. Then, and only then, can we criticize those who choose to be poor.

For far too many poor, there is no real choice. That must change.

Finally, there is much you say by leaving certain topics unsaid, most notably the two issues that are continually raised to motivate people into voting for the right, “protecting the unborn” and a Constitutional Amendment to “ban gay marriage.”

In short, whether you realize it or not, the causes you support are not of the current “right” but are progressive causes.

I urge you, and those on the “left” to seek common ground. Such is the basis for accomplishing much needed changes.

  42. Briseadh na Faire says:

    #32

So what you are saying is that elections in this country are rigged. Is that what you believe?

I believe they are flawed. I suspect some are rigged. I have grave concerns that the outcomes of the 2008 elections, especially those using electronic voting machines, have already been determined.

  43. Cobaltbay says:

    Dear MaX!

“…you have eloquently made my case (you’re WHACKED!)”

Funny how you in the minority (31%) think you’re in the know. So far your political base has brought us the largest debt in history, abuse of civil rights, the widest gap between rich and poor with more former “Middle Class” falling out of the MC into poverty. You might enjoy the police state Bush/Cheney has brought on. The secrets, an energy bill that pays big oil 2.5 Billion of your Tax dollars; even after raking in 39.6 billion in Profits. Granted right now there are three Democrats under investigation. Small compared to the 18 Republicans.

We might be WACKED but what do you know, you’re NUTS and in the minority.

By the way the 67% majority of Americans offer you to see the light. You poor minority I PITTY you.

  44. David B says:

Max, speak of yourself when you talk of whacked. It is you and your ilk that has created the distorted reality. You lie your way though it daily. If you’re on of the 31%, then you’re beyond wkacked Max.

  45. Clif says:

  46. Sherry Gee says:

Does anyone doubt who is running the country. Bush, Cheney, Addington?

  47. Zookeeper says:

Definitely the evil “Dick” Cheney. *shudder*

  48. Sherry Gee says:

Well Dave Addington is the guy behind the iron mask. There is so much the Bush administration puts out there that clearly did not come from the commander and chief himself. He is not the brightest bulb in the pack and certainly not the architect of all the grand schemes his think tanks put out. Signing statements are a clear way to pass legislation without a veto. Good golly these guys are crooks. We all will have to live with bad legislation except for Bush. He excuses himself following the law with a little help from his friends.

…if Bushiva, L’il Dick and their co-conspirators (in Congress, corporate America and cabinet positions) are NOT held accountable for their crimes…

…against the people of Iraq and America…
