VIDEO: Bush Caught In Lie About Snow Resignation

Watch it:

On May 25th, President Bush said that Treasury Secretary John Snow had not given him any indication that he was leaving soon:

PRESIDENT BUSH: Secretary of Treasury Snow?

Q Has he given you any indication he intends to leave his job any time soon?…

PRESIDENT BUSH: No, he has not talked to me about resignation. I think he’s doing a fine job.

In fact, not only had Snow indicated he was leaving, President Bush had already settled on his replacement. Today, Tony Snow said that Hank Paulson was offered the job on May 20 and accepted a day later:

QUESTION: Do you have any tick tock on the Paulson…

SNOW: Yes. The tick tock is the two of them met on the 20th of May and there was a conversation. And Hank Paulson accepted the job a day later. That was subject to clearance. It does take time, especially for a Senate confirmable position, to complete those. So it did take time to get some of those clearances wrapped up.

Later in the briefing, Tony Snow essentially admitted that Bush misled the public, claiming it was necessary to protect the market:

QUESTION: Can I just ask you one other follow-up on Karl about Secretary Snow? When the president was asked, when he was standing next to Prime Minister Blair and millions of people were watching, he’s telling the American people that: I have got no indication the secretary’s going to resign…

SNOW: No, He has not talked to me about resignation. I mean, it was very carefully worded. But again, what you didn’t want to have, I think, is at a period of time when you haven’t finished doing your clearances for the person you want to fill that position, you don’t want to have chaos in the markets. It was…

QUESTION: But he’s already offered it to somebody. He’s got it in hand. I mean, he offered these positions all the time and wait for FBI and background searches that sometimes take a long time. I mean, the Supreme Court nominees take six weeks. But you still announced to the public you’re pick somebody…

SNOW: Well, but you know, again Hank Paulson at that time, you don’t announce somebody who hasn’t been pre-cleared. You haven’t finished the clearance process, you don’t announce it. Period. I mean, it’s just…

QUESTION: But it’s not even announcing him. You could have been direct and said: We’re expecting…

SNOW: Well no — with all due respect, I think there was some concern again about how something like that affects the markets. If you have uncertainty for an extended period of time, which would have been, at that point, four or five days, I think that is something that you’ve got to worry about and you’ve got to be responsible in dealing with it.

  4. Spudge_Boy says:

But I thought the economy was doing great. Why would announcing a new treasury secretary affect our outrageously strong economy.

Oh I know, everything these guys do is aimed at the stock market. Because you know when the stock market is really strong, I get a bigger pay check.

Oh wait, no I don’t. Somebody else gets rich off of the work I do to promote my company.

President George Bush would never lie. He’d rather snort cocaine and drink until he is falling down and wetting himself. He’d go awol before he’d lie. This is another smear campaign against the unassailable reputation of our great and good president, George W. Bush, our fearless leader.

  7. Dan says:

Tell me when Bush tells the TRUTH, now that would be news worth reading.

when I saw his Press conference with Blair when he made the statement it was an obvious falsehood. I thought what a dumbass to lie over something trivial and commonly known as his impending resignation.

    Just another Turdblossom bloom.

    Great point….

I would call this small potatoes in comparison to some other lies Bush et al have been spewing lately…..

Knowing the media all to well; they will probably call Bush on this lie instead of the lies that got us into war …..

  34. DS says:

    #30, love that comment!

My first thought when I heard the news today was that Bush lied in his press conference. I was surprised that no one in the news was mentioning that. After reading Tony Snow’s comments, my first thought was that they’ve been clinging to their mantra that all is well because the economy is doing great (in their view) so they were afraid to do or say anything to rock that boat.

Separate question, when told of John Snow’s resignation, do you think Bush said, “But, I just hired him to replace McClellan! He’s leaving already??”

  38. Save The Estate Tax says:

I wonder why no one is talking about the Estate Tax. Bill Frist and his Senate Rethugs are going to try to scrap this law next week. Does anyone care about this?

  39. Just plain mad says:

All three pillars of the US government are gone as of today. The last to fall was the Supreme Court. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are no longer valid in this government. It’s over. The US cannot call itself a democracy or a representative republic. I don’t know what it is, but somewhere between a oligarchy dictatorship (congress and president) or outright dictatorship (president presiding over all).

For anyone that can read, each of the first 10 articles of the bill of rights are dead. The constitution and the separation of powers has been gutted.

  40. War4Sale says:

Bush is, quite simply, a proven serial LIAR.

  41. Corey says:

Lying is a pathology for Bush. But why lie about this?

  42. Fristfecker says:

But what about the Terror Alerts? Didn’t the market make money off all the duct tape and plastic? Mushroom Clouds and all that were to Protect the market?

Bush is so full of Crap His eyes are turning brown

  43. Spudge_Boy says:

Bush spun the answer to that question, yes. Now, ask if anyone cares.

    Comment by Seixon — May 30, 2006 @ 4:11 pm

And you are spinning the fact that Bush lied and nobody cares about you.

  44. Bill from Dover says:

I thought nothing could stop this booming economy.

  45. Metro says:

hmmm, this don’t seem like a big deal to me. The administration should be in complete control of when and how they announce resignations and appointments. We shouldn’t conflate the important big lies with this kind of housekeeping stuff.

  46. EM says:

    Tourette’s lying.

    There is no cure.

  47. Solitaire says:

Yes, I’m sure all the lies that Bush told the American people were deemed “necessary” to protect whatever they valued at the time.
That’s WHY people tell lies, don’t you know.
    It’s not an excuse.
    It’s called “busted”.
But if Bush can lie our military into an illegal, disastrous war, what’s a little lie about a henchman? There are the big lies, which nobody seems to care about, and the little lies, which nobody seems to care about. Lying has become the M.O. of our government, and the people have accepted it. They send their sons and daughters to die for lies. They pay their taxes to support programs initiated by a bought-and- paid-for-Congress, and believe their lies too! The poorest Americans continue to lose ground, the rich get richer, and the middle class drowns in debt, but… “GOP Values are Family Values.” So… family values are to lie, cheat, bribe, kill? Guess so.
    Or… are they lying?
Could it be that if the American people knew the truth before they walked into the voting booth, BushCO wouldn’t be in the WH?
    Nah.
They’d still vote for Bush because when a saint like Georgie lies, he must mean well… right?

  51. Wayne says:

I know this one is petty, in the grand scheme of things – but apparently we need every straw we can get to break the camel’s back (a.k.a. an asleep at the wheel Congress).

    Comment by unbelievable

It’s really sad when we can call a lie told to the country by the person who is supposed to be the President, who ran on “integrity” , as petty, because the lying sack has lied so often that it is starting to become acceptable to tell “just a little one”

They impeached Clinton for 1 lie. This baffoon lies constantl;y, tells his administration to lie constantly and has totally wrecked the integrity of the US worldwide.

Even 1 little lie by this @#$% chimp is NOT acceptable.

  52. Maezeppa says:

Well, that’s a forgivable “lie”. It didn’t kill anybody and it’s sort of the polite and customary thing to do, not talk about resignations until the person himself makes the announcement.

  53. Wayne says:

    #50

    Well said, Solitaire

  54. Raz says:

Why should we be surprised about this lie? His presidency started out with lies and deception to the American people, and it’s been going on ever since. Bush is a BIG LIAR, he has always been a liar. Putting up the Christian face has fooled some people but not all.

  55. Craig says:

I’d like a reporter to ask the administration what their rule is on it being ok to lie and mislead.

If the utterly inconsequential ‘threat to the economy’ posed by this issue was enough for him to lie instead of say no comment, then nearly everything else he says on bigger issues is at risk.

  56. Mellifluous says:

What I want to know is this: the American people obviously aren’t restive about the twirp and company. We seem to basically not really be looking to throw the bums out (well, I am, but where is the groundswell impeachment movement?) So why do the foreign people keep telling us that they like the American People (TM) but not the government. Who do the foreigners think put that government in there? The Triad (TM)?

  57. William Day says:

Snow has learned to keep his face straight, but still has to learn the art of how to lie to cover up a lie to cover up another lie, and so on. The press corp attending these ass kissing sessions might be fooled, but I suspect that most folks with an ounce of logic can see through the shams.

  58. Wayne says:

    Well, that’s a forgivable “lie”.

    Comment by Maezeppa

How can any lie be acceptable and forgivable, when the president should not be lying at all?
Where the heck do YOU draw the line?

  59. Clyde the Ripper says:

Martha S. went to jail for insider trading and so should every Rethuglican that traded on the stock market from the time Chump lied until Snow was announced. It is insider trading, whether or not they bought or sold. Bush was manipulating the market by lying about Snow. Don’t impeach him, just shoot the lying bastard.

  60. jonsid says:

You have to realize one thing about GWB. He follows the Christian religion and “Thou shalt not lie” is not one of the 10 commandments.

  61. unbelievable says:

Even 1 little lie by this @#$% chimp is NOT acceptable.
    Comment by Wayne — May 30, 2006 @ 4:58 pm

Yeah, it is sad that this is benign compared to everything else he’s done.

I still wanna know how 60 million people thought re-electing him was a good idea… I’m one of the ones who learned my lesson after his first term (used to be a conservative). Even if all the crap I ever heard about Kerry were 100% true, he still would have been a significantly vast improvement from the mess we are in now.

  62. unbelievable says:

He follows the Christian religion and “Thou shalt not lie” is not one of the 10 commandments.
    Comment by jonsid — May 30, 2006 @ 5:12 pm

But not covetting they neighbors ‘ox’ or ‘ass’ is… Even more clear as to why the Founding Fathers left it out of our structure…

  63. Spudge_Boy says:

Well, that’s a forgivable “lie”. It didn’t kill anybody and it’s sort of the polite and customary thing to do, not talk about resignations until the person himself makes the announcement.

Well, your arguement is completely empty, since SNow did not make the announcement of his own resignation, Bush did.

  64. Solitaire says:

A good portion of the 60 million that voted for him believed his lies, big and little.
A large portion still do because they so want it to be true. And then there are the Christianists. You see, they have been promised absolute power in this country. They have been told that the Christian Religion will be made the law of the land. They have been promised the end of secular government. They will sacrifice their children to this idea. Anything Bush says will be followed because he is the FUHRER! They will not see any side other than their own, they never intended to be fair about it! How can they be fair and still shoot down everyone who will not convert like dogs in the street ? They’re not that crazy. Fair? Truth? They don’t need no stinkin truth, they have the promise, and they are the promise-keepers.
It’s a promise they cling to.

  65. Wayne says:

He follows the Christian religion and “Thou shalt not lie” is not one of the 10 commandments.
    Comment by jonsid

Oh, yeah the little part ” thou shall not bear false witness “.

I mean George has never fed any false witnesses to bears, He is saving that for the true witnesses that out his illegal activities.

  70. Seixon says:

Let me ask you guys something.

Let’s say that the president of the United States knows that we are going to conduct a surprise attack on an enemy we are at war with. Now let’s say someone asks him if we are going to conduct a surprise attack, should the president:

    (A) Say the truth, that we are.
    (B) Lie, and say that we are not.
    (C) Say no comment, which would imply that we are.

I’m not saying that this instance with Snow was like this, but it’s for all of the noobs here who live in a fantasy world where the president should never, ever lie.

    #38 bush lies reflexively.

Exactly. It’s his first impulse and his every impulse, when asked a question, to answer it with a lie. He is so accustomed to lying and has no reservations about it whatsoever–he has no conscience–that he just lies whether or not there’s any reason at all to do so.

The problem is that there are still people out there who assume, as you should be able to do with most people, that he actually means what he’s saying. They take it for granted. They don’t suspect that they’re being lied to constantly. It’s like the people who believe e-mail hoaxes and think that there’s actually some guy in Nigeria who wants them to hold onto millions of dollars for him. They see it in print and that’s all it takes for them to think it’s true. It’s too bad there isn’t some way to screen out potential voters who are extremely gullible.

  84. johnndrama says:

I disagree that this is a small lie, because when you start lying about things that have no consequence you know how truly evil a person is.

I could see why he lied about Iraq, or torture or NSA spying. Breaking the law isn’t something you want to be known (although Congress doesn’t care).

It’s like his lie about catching that Perch.

What was the point in lying about catching a Perch twice as large as any Perch ever caught?

I do agree with you, however.

  86. Clyde the Ripper says:

    # 64 Unbelievable

The Las Vegas Review Journal gave some real insight on the Bush elections in an article about the “American Idol” winner. The winner received 63 million votes while the Nielsen ratings put the top audience at under 40 million. Their explanation for the numbers–a fast trigger finger on the redial button. In Bush’s case it is a fast rethuglican finger on the Diebold button.

Why shouldn’t he lie? He is the embodiment of one big lie.

  87. WaltTheMan says:

I thought at first that W had brought back Pat Paulsen in order to invigorate his administration. After all, W still has connections with Jesus and God.

  88. Imbo Fortitude says:

Anyone who has read my prior comments here knows I hate Bush’s corruption, his unprovoked attack on Iraq, his filthy efforts to jam an amnesty down the throats of the American people and his refusal to lift a finger to stop the 9/11 attacks.
But automatically condemning anything any Bush crony says is an easy trap to fall into. In a strange way, it is mildly refreshing to hear Tony Snow admit Bush lied, and give the REASON he lied. And the reason ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE. THE DOLLAR IS PLUMMETING, the trade deficit is soaring, oil is at $72 a barrel, Bush’s government deficit is at $552 billion a year, the head of Fannie Mae has been implicated in a scandal in which he made $90 million by falsifying reported profits*, etcetera. Considering the financial house of cards that the Bush administration has set up for America, it doesn’t surprise me that Bush would lie to avoid the risk of knocking it down before the 2006 elections.
It is tiresome day and day, for 5 years, hearing these SOBs lie and deny, lie and deny. Even when it is obvious that Bush, Cheney, or Condosleazza Rice lied, they always deny it.
Thanks, Tony Snow. A little bit of honesty about Bush’s dishonesty and giving us a REASON he lied was a welcome change from what we are used to.

*The head of Fannie Mae “worked” there for 5 years and “earned” $90 million by manipulating Fannie Mae’s financial results. His income was linked to the results, so by falsifying them, he dramatically increased his already obscene income. Fannie Mae is a quasi-governmental organization. So this man made more money from a government job than any man in U.S. history. As a final parting middle finger to America, he and his corrupt Board of Directors set him up with a vile $114,000 a month pension for life! That’s right, $1,300,000 a year pension of the taxpayer.
So far, he has not done a perp walk.

  89. Walter K. Mintel, Jr. says:

I have no comment at this time due to being a brand new subscriber. I take it back I do have a comment–for over four years I have been calling for the Impeachment of Bush,Cheney,Rumsfield, and Rice and this is just for starters. These criminals should be arrested and turned over to the World Court, or tried in the same court as Saddam is being tried. Do you think I’m being unfair? I think I’m more than fair, I’d arrest them all tonight.

  90. drbill says:

There is no thing as a “small lie” , you either lie or you don’t. Bush is a pathological liar so it is hard for him to discern the truth from a lie. With him, it is better to assume he is lying until proven otherwise. What is wrong with the Republican party? They don’t have an ounce of ethical standards. You can bet if Nixon had this Congress he would have finished out his term of office. This Congress has no ethical standards. Bush is the worst President and Congress is also the worst Congress we have ever had.

Ok, it is very simple. Not telling the world but telling your friends to sell their stock and then when the market drops 150 points , buy it back at a lower price? Maybe bush is not doing the actual insider trading but friends falling close to his tree are. And that is a crime.

I think it is high time that we treat the president like a normal person. And send this perjury-infested president to jail.

This goes out to all the people who think that economic and political rigors are not essential respnsibilities in a Democratic society. P.s. The people of america have Democracy and freespeech more in their minds and hearts than any other place on earth; so get off your ass and stop living in your self-imposed slavery. And you think race-relations are bad in america? (although science only recognizes one ‘race’ of homo-sapians) Just check out the rest of the world. I, as a Texan in Tokyo, have no civil rights since the japanese government is racist, and when the people do not revolt , they accept. so there is no difference between the government and the people of a country when that country is touted as even a representative democracy. So I can safely say Japanese people are far more Racist than Americans. Once again to bring my point home: it is your patriotic duty as a citizen of a representative-democracy to accept or revolt your REPRESENTATIVES(yes this means the president too) However, it is not an option to rely on ignorance. Well-I-had-no-idea my ass! Also as a teacher, I have little hope in the self-erudition(studying by yourself) of most people in America or Japan. You are too busy working, complaining about work and then getting drunk to forget about work to study. You think if the news is lying to you, then you should just not watch the news or think about it at all. It is ok to not watch the news; I don’t. But it is uncivil(unpatriotic) to not think about it.

(Most of you are sheep; and ‘Bush ain’t Jesus’)

As for the market stability, they’ve been leaking like a drunk frat boy in the alley that they were going to change the Treasury spot for a couple months, and it’s that kind of instability of not openly declaring it and not denying the rumor that puts more pressure on the market than the straight talk does. Besides, the market corrects on strong rumors, not facts. After all, they are in the speculation business.
