New Orleans ‘dangerously unprepared

By Nico Pitney on May 31st, 2006 at 11:16 am

New Orleans ‘dangerously unprepared

for hurricane season,’ according to a new report by Gulf Coast Reconstruction Watch. “Due to delays in funding and construction, nearly 20% of New Orleans levees and floodwalls destroyed by Katrina have not been repaired,” and the city’s pump system, “designed to prevent flooding in low-lying areas, has not been tested and repaired.”

Ya see the idea was tho toss all that money down a sinkhole after the storm, knowing that the area will have to be abandoned eventually. Follow the money…

  2. Hardy Haberman says:

Again because of inaction on the part of the Bush administration an American city is at risk. These guys do not care about security, or terror, only money and lining the pockets of their friends.

  3. Zimzone says:

    You’re doing a heckuva job, W!

  4. For Truth says:

How many more times does this place need to flood before people realize it’s not a good place to live?

  5. Jules says:

This is a surprise to anyone?

  6. Ron says:

There’s a war to be fought in Iraq, don’t cha know. There is no need to help murkans anymore, they’re on their own.

For gosh sakes, people need to get a clue. Taxes are used to wage war, not build the wealth and health of a nation. jiminy crickets

    Fascism is so much fun.

    let the good times roll.

  7. SKdeA says:

#4, what, like Holland? Or Venice?
It’s a fine place to live if youtake care of the wetlands and the levees.
    Get a clue.

  8. Lora says:

Please expect the trolls to blame this all on Clinton, or in Mighty Hypocrite’s case, on Gov, Blanco and Mayor Nagin. Don’t you know that God Bush can do no wrong.

  9. GSD says:

That’s OK. Black folks won’t vote for me.

    -George W. Bush

  10. yugan says:

if the governments role is to protect its people, why doesnt it inform them that new orleans (or any other hurricane prone region) is not a safe place to live?

  11. yugan says:

is there one other country in this whole wide world that does not HATE USA? may be there is. oh yes. UK doesnt hate USA. is it just jealosy that others hate USA?

  12. Jay Randal says:

New Orleans may be completely destroyed by another hurricane this year, bu do not blame the levees it would be God’s wrath for re-electing Mayor Nagin and his ass kissing of Bush!

  13. Retired Republican Soldier says:

“Again because of inaction on the part of the Bush administration an American city is at risk.” What a crock! Do you suppose the LOCAL authorities would be in the best position to plan for emergencies? If not, why have a local government in the first place? How about the State and Local officials RESPONSIBILITY to safeguard citizens? What a bunch of nanny-state whiners, give me, give me, give me. Luckily the rest of the country doesn’t act like act like LA/NO and actually has a PLAN for disasters that includes something other than whining. They voted for Naggin, so they deserve him. Maybe you can get some of the THOUSANDS of residents still sitting ON THEIR ASSES to help build a sea wall or something to protect the city? I am willing to bet that all of the sponsor cities are ready to send them back home.

  14. Evil Spaniard says:

#13 Yes, yes, personal responsability, personal responsability. No matter that they saw his city, homes, cars and jobs flooded less than a year ago, they must take responsability and, if they haven’t made a levee as tall as the Hoover Dam all around the city, made of 50 yards wide concrete by themselves using only spoons recovered from their dinning room, now lying underwater, it’s only their fault. Yeah, right. /Sarcasm Off

  15. For Truth says:

    #7 Skid,

Does Holland and Venice get Hurricanes(typhoons)? I didn’t think so. So there is a difference in the viability of these places to be inhabited by humans.

  16. DieNowForPeace says:

    RRS,
Most local governments are not equipped to deal with HUGE disasters (see Katrina, and, oh, how about NYC 9-11, damn whining wussies, needing all that FEDERAL assistance.)

That’s when the Federal Gov. needs to step up, which YOUR whining little incompetent leader DID NOT, NOR HAS NEVER REALIZED.

I’m in a “sponsor” city, and actually appreciate the culture that the displaced people of the Gulf states have brought us. Luckily, they weren’t sent to your city, where all you apparently see is black and white.

Thanks for confirming my notion that all Republicans are racists at heart. I should know, I grew up in a family of cold-hearted, self centered ‘conservatives’ just like YOU.

  17. For Truth says:

Yes the Gubbermint at all levels failed NO, Dems and Repugs. My momma always told me not to count on others to save you, count on yourself (and she’s a hippy lib), hasn’t the message been made clear as of last year, NO is not a good place to live, and the gubbermint ain’t gonna make it better. So if your gone, don’t move back.

3C From Disaster – the evidence

Our Science Editor Lawrence McGinty covered 71,000 miles on his three-month epic journey to chart the devastating effect of global warming on our planet.

Climate change is fast becoming one of the most pressing issues facing the world and ITV News decided to investigate.

We called our series 3C From Disaster – another three degrees on Earth’s temperature, and sea levels will rise, and whole communities will be washed away and it could also affect us here in the UK.

    THE EVIDENCE

  19. Retired Republican Soldier says:

“Thanks for confirming my notion that all Republicans are racists at heart.” NO I will not let you get away with calling me racists! Nothing I said was racists. I espoused the virtue of looking after youself. There is nothing racists by saying you should take some PERSONAL responsibility. Whether it’s providing for your family or making sure you have a plan (just in case) for a natural emergency. If you equate personal responsibility with racism then you have a really big problem. If you live on the Gulf coast and don’t have some sort of plan in case of a hurricane then you have a RESPONSIBILITY problem. Take your race card and shove it.

  20. DieNowForPeace says:

Aww, did I touch a wound, or what RETIRED REPUBLICAN RASCIST.

No, there’s nothing wrong with screaming at people to TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY. However, in light of the segregated situation which unfolded in New Orleans, YOUR TONE IS RASCIST.

Now couching your argument with the term “natural” disaster, as if to somehow ensure that NO New Yorkers can be called “whiny, government handout needy folk”. Go on, rationalize everything to fit into your model of how the word should be.

Typical Republican, wants to have it BOTH ways.

BTW, in singular first, second or third person, it’s “rascist”, not “rascists”.

  21. Retired Republican Soldier says:

“Typical Republican, wants to have it BOTH ways.”
Typical Liberal, can’t come up with a good argument, play the race card.

  22. Clif says:

RSS for somebody who claims to be retirewd military you are showing yourself to be quite ignorant of the US Army Corps of Engineers major responsibility..the building and repairing of the Levees that support our Navigable Waterways..so the Levees in NO are DIRECTALY the responsibility of the corps of engineere..a part of the us aRMY A PART OF dod COMMANDED BY THE DECIDER IN CHIEF…WHO DECIDED not TO PROTECT no OTHERWISE THE WORK WOULD HAVE BEEN PRIORITISED AND MADE SURE IT WAS FINISHED…THEY REBUILT THE PENTAGON IN ONE YEAR FOR A PUBLICITY STUNT…BUT NOT A MAJOR AMERICAN CITY’S DEFENCES AGAINST FLOODING FROM ANOTHER HURRICANE?

  23. DieNowForPeace says:

    Hey Soldier dumbass,
    Quothe thyself:
They voted for Naggin, so they deserve him. Maybe you can get some of the THOUSANDS of residents still sitting ON THEIR ASSES to help build a sea wall or something to protect the city? I am willing to bet that all of the sponsor cities are ready to send them back home.

    Comment by Retired Republican Soldier

“They voted” – the majority of the population is BLACK
“thousands”, “sitting on their asses” – seems like 99% of THEM were black
“send them back home” – as I stated, so far, I enjoy ‘THEM’ being relocated to my city (I’ve seen em, and yes, most are black!)

    YOUR WORDS, YOUR RASCISM.

Time to ship yer ass off to fight for my freedom in Iraq, the land of the free!!!!!

  24. Evil Spaniard says:

#15 Venice is sinking and Italy government has to fight against sea rise making constantly engineering works.

And Holland (the Netherlands) has to care for his levees in a continuous manner, because they protect the country against the North Sea storms. And boy, you don’t want to know the North Sea’s fury in winter.

  25. JP says:

For Truth, and others.. notice that the oldest areas (Quarter, Garden District, St Charles Ave, etc.) made it largely unscathed. The residential areas created after 1875, in drained swamps, aren’t a good place to live, but there is good land there.

America made a compact with the area’s residents, implicitly, at the Louisiana Purchase (signed in the Cabildo at Jackson Square, btw) to protect the area in exchange for all it contributes–oil, shipbuilding, control of the river, etc. No time to turn one’s back on this now.

  26. Scott Brison says:

Time to spend ten trillion dollars to rebuild Iraq, and then bomb it again. Then, rebuild it again, then bomb it again.
