ThinkFast PM: June 1, 2006

“Predictably, the left-wing press has run with the alleged massacre at Haditha … screaming about holding all of those involved accountable,” Bill O’Reilly said, introducing a segment on “Defending America.” “Why do so many rejoice when bad things happen to the USA?”

“President George W. Bush has been named the worst president in the last 61 years by American voters — with nearly twice the negative rating of Richard Nixon — in a new poll by Quinnipiac University.”

The Bush administration’s “world-class flip-flop” on Iran goes unnoticed.

“The environment and the economy have been totally misconstrued as incompatible. They are opposite sides of the same coin — you can’t consider one without the other.” — Treasury Secretary nominee Hank Paulson. More at Gristmill.

And F-I-N-A-L-L-Y: Gannett News Service is blogging on the 2006 Spelling Bee. The first round will be broadcast as a reality show on ABC, starting at 8 PM ET.

Anyone else read the Rolling Stone story? Any one here really surprised everyone sat on their hands for a while too?

    Just curious ya know...

No need to spend anymore money on these polls. Just call my house (800) Bush-Sux. Operators are standing by.

Where on EARTH did O'Reilly get the idea the Left was delighted with bad news on the war?? Ahhha....If progs would stop gleefully rubbing their hands together when news about Haditha and Abu Garaib, O'Reilly wouldn't get such a distorted view....

  5. Clif Says:

I read the rolling stones story..it does make the case that much undemocratic things were done by the republicans to ensure their wins..and does a good job of comparing Ken Blackwell to katherine Harris...neither fo which are doing very well in their respective runs for office..

The Rush hannity will call this more moonbat shrill of the left..but hopefully it will slowly grow so this fall many more people are watching

  6. The Muse Says:

It's going to be hurricane Haditha first out of the gate this storm season. It goes to show how much was learned by the Bush war council after the Abu Ghraib scandal.

Oh, but once again Bush claims innocence because nobody told him. Does the son of a bitch ever ask questions?

New on EWM: Contrition, Crawford Style

...Standing in front of the nation and beside what’s left of Tony Bair, Bush admitted that he’s just too damn manly. Bush says it was the “tough talk,” that stands out among mistakes. You know, the “bring it on,” “wanted dead or alive” crap.

The President let his inner cowboy out and he’s sorry for sending the “wrong signals.” Signals are important to this caballero. There’s no “Brokeback” in his Baghdad policy...

No Progrssive or liberal was "delighted " to find out our military killed innocent women and children. Most of us were horrified and sickened. Like when we found out that our government is torturing, kidnapping and illegally imprisoning people all around the world.
Delighted with that bad news?No sick that our government would perform these acts and cover them up

Much like your mindless drivel and nonsense makes me sick.

MA , Progs don't. Most want our troops brought home so nothing bad can happen to them. It was you rightwingnutfu*ktards that during Clintons Kosovo war could not wait for the "body bags" to start streaming in. Faux news had their "military experts" on each night talking about it. Also, each night that without sending in "boots on the ground" the US could not win. Wrong again Morons-it worked and not one American KIA. Chew on that bald, sweatie fat one.

What most want is no more killings..and a solution to the fiasco Bush has us in...and not another one in Iran..

  16. trueblue Says:

Didn't anyone read last month's Rolling Stones (last week of April; got it for my birthday...) where leading Historians ranked Idiot Boy "The Worst President Ever"?

    That one was a keeper.

His presidency isn't even OVER and HISTORIANS are calling him a colossal failure. Just like everything else he's attempted.
    Talk about a loser.
Unfortunately, we as a country are the ones who will ultimately lose.

  17. trueblue Says:

    Terry,
I've just entered the fray. Were you deleted?

    I've wondered where you were......

    Nice to see you back.

but I haven't seen you for awhile.....

    They banned you today?

    "FREEDOM FOR THE TURTLE!!"

    How's that?

  20. Zookeeper Says:

Keith Olbermann has just slapped down Bill O'Reilly AGAIN, who AGAIN trotted out his WRONG idea that Americans shot German POWs at Malmedy. Actually, it was the Nazis who executed American POWs at Malmedy. BO said this last October, and then again on Tuesday, then he defended what he said on Wednesday. KO was PISSED! If you missed it, try to catch it on the repeat later tonight, or it might be on Crooks and Liars tomorrow.

  21. Stupid Republicans Says:

“President George W. Bush has been named the worst president in the last 61 years by American voters

I met a guy the other day who apologized for voting for Bubble boy in 2000. His apology was accepted because he learned his lesson by not voting for him in 2004.

What seems strange, if Gore won ithe popular vote in 2000 how could it be possible that Bubble boy won the popular vote in 2004 when self procalimed republicans are admitting that they didn't make the same mistake twice?

I can't tell you how many times I've heard republicans say that they didnt vote for Bubble boy in 2004.

    Election fraud........

Its time for justice, Impeach Bush and Cheney!

  22. Steve Magruder Says:

Apparently, O'Reilly confuses recoiling in horror about what's happening to our country and our Constitution with rejoicing.

  23. Clyde the Ripper Says:

There is a Chain-of-Command in the Military. However, there seems to be some filtering installed on the up side when it comes to bad stuff. Commander-In-Chief (CIC) G. DUHbya "Call me Harry the Second" Bushit doesn't understand two facts that the real Harry knew quite well (1) The buck (Shit) flows up hill; and (2) The buck stops here. If the newest recruit in any of the services does anything outside the regulations of the military the ultimate, repeat ultimate, responsibility for that action lies with the CIC. For Bush to say "I didn't know what was going on is a statement of fact (he doesn't know anything that is going on except what he is told by his handlers), not an excuse for his incompetence.

Next, why only 61 years. I know personally he is the worst president in 73 years and I will offer my usual odds of $20 to a glass of warm pee that he is the wost president in 230 years.

The flip-flop may just be a flip-flip! Bush agreed to talks when Iran agreed to all the terms that Bushco had demanded before talks could occur. What has changed? Play ball with me or I will stick the bat up your ass and sick Bolton the hairlip on you.

My usual odds say that neither of the bushy twins will win the spelling bee.

I love this PM think fast!

You mean someone is actually listening to O'Really , Oh and the Dixie Chicks debuting at number one is a great story , no wait you meant the Al Gore thingy about running in 08 , just kidding I'm reading the " Was the election stolen " article right now , as if I need to , everybody knows they cheated , even you MA you insufferable bastard .

  27. Zookeeper Says:

#26 - It's the May 4, 2006, issue. It has a cute drawing of Georgie in a dunce cap, next to an article entitled, "The Worst President in History?"

    This rolling stone article:

The one by Robert Kennedy about how the repugs screwed many people not like them out of their vote to guarentee that the idiot kept being the idiot in chief

  29. For Truth Says:

I think Mighty Bill O'Reilly might be misinterpreting some things. Personally the massacre details made me sick and my heart was heavy. I get "happy" when the average person might get a chance to know what all is going on, so I am "happy" that this news is getting coverage, not "happy" it happened. But I wouldn't expect Mighty snotforbrains to be able to interpret a complex emotion.

  30. Stupid Republicans Says:

Thanks for the Rolling Stone info...

From the Kennedy article...Republicans derided anyone who expressed doubts about Bush's victory as nut cases in ''tinfoil hats,'' while the national media, with few exceptions, did little to question the validity of the election. The Washington Post immediately dismissed allegations of fraud as ''conspiracy theories,

Go ahead and challenge the validity of the election, but don't dare challenge the lies we were told about 9-11.

No tin foil hat here, just the facts.

Northwestern University's Womens LaCross team visited Bubble boy after winning the championship game. They all showed up to the White House wearing flip flops on their feet. The picture is hillarious, all these girls dressed up to the tee wearing cheap flip flops.

They won again this year and were asked if they are gong to the White House again and if so will they wear flip flops again...They replied with "we're not sure what we'll wear this year".

    Gotta love those LaCross girls!

It all began a while back, with Cheney and Reagan, and the Idea of 'Privatizing' Nuclear energy, and the reprocessing of it, Anyway 1 gm of nuclear energy is like what?? um some 100 million grams of oil? It's alot and it skis my mind right now. Anyhow, Russia and the German Siemans folks have built many reactors....so you see where the $$ is, and of course the battle for resources.

I had to ditch my IP to get out of the 'Free Speech Zone' today. They've not caught up with me yet.

Here, I'm on topic, Thought Police: the placement of John 'Bronwshirt' Bolton at the UN (who proved in the Libyan disarmament talks that he was only there to scupper the talks), and Dick Cheney's candid admission that talks with Iran now are just a 'check mark', nothing more. There's no flip-flop here - this is the same as the UN resolution head-fake that had everyone going in 2002. And remember that back then they were already stepping up bombing runs in Iraq... This paragraph in essence was part of my afternoon postings that only made it as far as my cache....

  55. AvengingAngel Says:

PBS this week aired "The Age of AIDS," perhaps the most powerful and devastating documentary on American television in years. The two part, four-hour special featured interviews and history from six continents and over a dozen countries detailing the path, the politics and the pain of 25 years of the AIDS pandemic.

Perhaps the most disturbing thread running through "The Age of AIDS" is the myopic complicity of the American radical right in the needless death and suffering of thousands worldwide. Through sins of commission and omission, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Jesse Helms and other champions of the Christian right helped ensure the spread of an unfolding global tragedy.

    For the story, see:

  63. Aaron Adams Says:

Bush and Rice are playing at charades. To call the administration's ultimatum to Iran "negotiation" is play acting. In what type of negotiation does one side demand the other give in totally on their main point before sitting down at the "negotiation" table?

No. What Bush and Rice are up to is just what one paper reported it to be, "checking off the "negotiation box" before getting down to what they really what: to start some act of force against Iran, preferably before the mid-term elections.

I guess this is another case of the lie being so blatant that no national media outlet dare expose it. Instead we get Wolf and all the other robo-reporters gushing about the "change in policy" and the extraordinary willingness of the Bush administation to go the extra mile to engage Iran.

When did our fourth estate declare moral and intellectual bankuptcy?

  64. Tobey tall Says:

    New 'Iraq massacre' tape emerges
The BBC has uncovered new video evidence that US forces may have been responsible for the deliberate killing of 11 innocent Iraqi civilians.

According to the Americans, the building collapsed under heavy fire killing four people - a suspect, two women and a child.

But a report filed by Iraqi police accused US troops of rounding up and deliberately shooting 11 people in the house, including five children and four women, before blowing up the building.

The video tape obtained by the BBC shows a number of dead adults and children at the site with what our world affairs editor John Simpson says were clearly gunshot wounds.

New Army documents reveal US knew of and approved torture before Abu Ghraib scandal

New Army documents released by the American Civil Liberties Union today reveal that Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez ordered interrogators to "go to the outer limits" to get information from detainees. 68. Tobey tall Says:

For all you religious Bush war supporters out there

The New Republic reports that according to Iraqi estimates, between 40,000 and 100,000 Iraqi Christians have fled since 2004, many following their own road to Damascus across the Syrian border or to Jordan, while many more have been displaced within Iraq.

  69. Jaded Prole Says:

Looks like more Haditha. Bush won't be able to bumble his way out of this. Even his puppets in Iraq are making accusations and forming investigations. There is nothing more we can disaccomplish by being there.

  70. Ho Chi Minh Says:

Abu Gharib, Fallujah, Haditha, and now the Iraqi PM blasts US troops for abusing and committing atrocities upon innocent civilians on a daily basis. Our troops are behaving like Nazis in occupied Europe in WWII. For the first time in my life, I'm truly ashamed of being an American, and I apologise to the world for my country.

  71. Democrat Soldier Says:

If only the ultra-radical right-wingers could hold a single standard. ONE SINGLE STANDARD! That's all it would take for them to gain credence in the debate about the debacle in Haditha. But, NO. All they can say is "Hey, it doesn't matter that members of our own military shot women and children in the head, we're never wrong!" They refuse to hold anyone to a single standard, they have a very restrictive standard of behavior for everyone else, and a wide open non-binding standard for themselves.

I guess when you've been blinded by your own sense of self importance as the ultra-radical right-wingers have been, the very last thing you ever have to do is apologize for your own misactions.

  72. Rick Says:

Abu Gharib, Fallujah, Haditha, and now the Iraqi PM blasts US troops for abusing and committing atrocities upon innocent civilians on a daily basis. Comment by Ho Chi Minh

That pretty much sums up the fascist-like hatred that the left has for the US and the US military. The left is only happy when it is busy hating on something and spreading doom-n-gloom. Ho Chi Minh would feel right at home being a propaganda minister in a Nazi state like Cuba or N. Korea.

  73. Pierre Says:

ThinkProgress must make a definitive statement of the record on Bill O'Reilly's utterly false and despicable Malmedy Massacre statements.

O'Reilly is one of the most brain-dead among the "Brain-dead Media" that ThinkProgress has taken as it charter to "Fight Against." O'Reilly must be exposed relentlessly for the wrong-headed imbecile that he is.

  75. Rick Says:

The great thing about the leftist blogosphere is that even those who would be natural allies, such as the NPR ombudsman and the gal from the Washington Post, are realizing what kooks these moonbats really are.

The democrats don't need enemies when they have "friends" like this.

Right. And the 'Phants can only talk about how rosey the 9trillion plus debt is, and how deficit spending is good for our country, and how "nobody could have antticipated THAT happening" for all their failures.

Sounds like you're drunk on the kool-aide you've been swigging.

Break the addiction and think for yourself. Stop repeating "ditto!" when the Right tells you lies about the Left. The truth will set you free, but first it'll tick you off!

  77. Democrat Soldier Says:

#74 - Bill O'LIE-ly is as much a partisan hack as Rush Limbaugh has always been. The only difference is that Rush doesn't even attempt to dress up his lies before spouting them off. Bill attempts to pretend that he's a "reporter" but he's more of the same.

  78. Democrat Soldier Says:

#76 - You obviously don't read anything from the rightist blogosphere. When you're there, you can only state opinions that have been pre-approved. Any deviation results in being banned. In fact, if you try to tell the truth about how the 'Phants are failures as leaders, you're banned for life!

Rightist blogospheres require not just drinking the kool-aide, but a loyalty oath or you cannot post your opinion. 1984 anyone?!?!?

Leftist blogs allow alternative opinions. Rightist blogs refuse to acknowledge that anyone can have an opinion that disagrees with their own.

  79. Democrat Soldier Says:

Does anyone actually think that Pres. Bush is not THE Flip-flopper-in-chief? This man has changed courses so many times he doesn't know what his original stance was!

Then again, what do you expect from a man who can't admit that he lied about a war for oil.

  80. Jules Says:

Democrat - when chimpy flip-flops it is "changing his mind." It is only when democrats change positions is it considered flip flopping. Another example of the delusional nature of republicans.

  81. Tobey tall Says:

America needs proportional representaion as europe has

that way every vote counts ,

democrats and republicans are playing the same game.

then your life is finished and your children have the same shit to go though ,,nothing new

get a proper representaion of what people vote for LIBERALS FOREVER

  82. Michael Camiso Says:

Please don’t proscribe to the so called ideologies...The comments here are refreshing and it is a pleasure to know that many people out there see the truth for what it is...

It was appalling that instead of reporting the atrocities and facts about Iraq, Fox news chose to attack who they clump together as Liberals. What a complete digression. Also, the endangering argument has become completely overused and lacks validity. Anyone who states that reports of humans beings being killed is a direct cause of more harm to our soldiers needs to refresh their memory on the entire Iraq war. There is absolutely no cause and effect to that. 1984 is right, lets not forget anything when its time to vote in November!!

“That pretty much sums up the fascist-like hatred that the left has for the US and the US military. The left is only happy when it is busy hating on something and spreading doom-n-gloom. Ho Chi Minh would feel right at home being a propaganda minister in a Nazi state like Cuba or N. Korea.”
    Comment by Rick — June 2, 2006 @ 8:50 am

Rick, you are suggesting that everyone on the left is “hating” and spreading “doom and gloom.” Your assertions are so fallible and clearly you believe that everyone who is critical of our current situation is “hating.” Please, do not take such a unimodal stance on the issues. If you believe that the left is “spreading doom and gloom” and “hate”, then who sir; constructed the engagement in Iraq? Who has attempted to contain our country with isolationist views? Who is attempting to pass a Constitutional amendment banning “gay marriage?” (as if such a thing existed; last time I checked are we not all people…besides, I would challenge you to find the word “marriage” anywhere in the Constitution) But in your mind, none of those issues are hateful or dooming? What about the notion that we cannot withdrawal from Iraq?? We have to “stay the course.” Who champions that Rick? The President is more concerned about his legacy than human beings in a state of war and chaos leaving thousands dead. Do you honestly know what propaganda is when you see it?

Tobey, such an excellent suggestion, do you mean moving closer to democracy with proportional representation!! As long as the elitist rule is governing, it will unfortunately never happen.

To those who continue to fight for truth, many of us are grateful…

    Challenge your beliefs!

  83. big papa Says:

It’s a great opportunity for the left to expose their hate for the military, and to defend islamo-fascists around the world.

  84. soDoSomeTHINg Says:

yeah, kinda do HATE it when America UNDER the current FASCIST regime does
bad sh!t. Defend the actions Rick if you can.

  85. Rick Says:

The reason the left really hates FOX is because it exposes them for the fascists they really are. American leftism is completely based on lies, and the left in reality hates free speech. Now the leftist nazis at universities have implemented speech codes, and the left invented fascist political correctness. The left just can't handle it when they're exposed.

  86. Evil Spaniard Says:

#87 The left invented political correctness? You mean, it has a patent number where the owner is "The Left Inc."?

  87. Glenn Becker Says:

"The reason the left really hates FOX is because it exposes them for the fascists they really are."

    Wrong.

The reason this leftie hates FOX is because of the near-tabloid and often sub-tabloid, hysterical yellow-journalist, I-write-with-my-testicles lowest common denominator CRAP they serve.

No responsible journalistic outfit would have allowed Bill O'Reilly to run its cafeteria, let alone have space on the air.

  88. Stupid Republicans Says:

I notice the neocons are saying that we are gleeful that our soldiers massacred Iraqi civilians.

    Food for thought....

Why is this story all over the mainstream news? Because Bubble boy leaked it in an attempt to get us to turn on the troops. That way morons like Rick can accuse us of hating the military.

I saw this coming the minute tragedy was reported.

Give it up neocon's who are too chicken to serve, we know that there are extenuating circumstances in this matter and your plan has failed.

I'm sure there are a few soldiers(Bush supporters) that get off on killing women and children
but in this case circumstances (lack of leadership and a solid plan) caused this tragedy.

Remember also chickenhawks, our friends and family members are Viet Nam Vets and we will never allow our Iraq vets to be treated as they were. Just because you're too stupid to learn from past mistakes doesn't mean we are.

  89. Drew E. Says:

When we shut down the 4 branches recruiting offices in Lakewood CO as our part of a National Day of Action on 11/18 we wore 8x10's of maimed Iraqi children. We will do the same during our trial on Monday. for an edited 5 min Quicktime video visit:

As a disabled vet 1969-72 .. when i hear talk of our troops not dying in vain, or "collateral damage"the only way that can happen is if we have no more of these wars... SAVE ALL THE CHILDREN... Dignity/Compassion/Non-violent resistence...and never forget to smile and dance

    Comment by Rick — June 2, 2006 @ 2:49 pm

Rick, seriously consider very carefully your assertions and do much more research before you diatribe on emotional undertones. Since, you so willingly claim that the left are “fascists,” please provide direct examples or evidence pointing to this fascist behavior. I guarantee many others on this forum can provide evidence of the far right acting in methods of extreme government. This evidence should include clear linear connections. For example, truly being fascist implies that the “fascist” movement would be engaging in actions of anti-liberalism, extreme nationalism, and an immensely centralized government with a dictatorial leader. Sir, you are no even utilizing the term in its correct context. I urge you to search most authoritarian or totalitarian regimes, past or present, and find any evidence that they are not fascist regimes. In an attempt to avoid tearse remarks, you simply must do more research. For that matter, you should challenge yourself to support any one of your hyperbolic statements with any piece of supporting information. Instead of merely illustrating your despise for a group of people you label the “fascist left,” make an attempt at forming perhaps one true statement.
