After whining on various threads about Murtha’s so-called cut-and-run tactics for Somalia, which were actually supported by major Repubs of the time like Bob Dole and Jesse Helms, I thought Mighty Hypocrite might have the good sense to shut up about Bush’s support for the corrupt warlords there. I was wrong to think Mighty Hypocrite might still have a shred of decency. But, of course, instead of discussing Somalia, he tried to divert the discussion by bringing up some crazy ideas espoused by one obscure leftist group to tell us that’s what we all think. (I, first of all, don’t need someone else–particularly someone I’ve never met–to tell me what I think.) By Mighty’s standards, I suppose we can say that he, like the not-so-obscure David Duke on the right, believes that the Holocaust never happened (I’m sure Mighty’s Jewish mom would go along with that one), or, like former GOP Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan that Hitler did some good things.
In any case, I–and probably all of the posters here–realize that some people do belong in prison, such as rapists, murderers, the Enron crooks, Tom Delay and the Congressman that Mighty supported until recently: Randy Cunningham.

Why should we expect our foreign policy to work in Somalia? The United Stated has based a large part — if not the entirety — of its foreign policy on “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” for not just years but decades and we’ve seen example after example blow up in our faces. We used in Iran when we helped return the Shah of Iran to power in 1953 in defiance of the democratically-elected Prime Minister…we used it in Iraq when they were at war with Iran and provided them with weapons (anyone remember that picture of Hussein and Chummy Rummy?)…we used it in Afghanistan when we did the same for the Mujahideen when they were fighting the Russians…and look at what’s happened to us since then as a result of this interference. No, folks…history should have taught us by now that the enemy of my enemy is not only NOT my friend, he may in the end turn out to be just as bad (or maybe even worse) enemy that the one I’m fighting now. Unfortunately, as George Santanaya once said, “those who refuse to learn from the past are condemed to repeat it.”

So did Jack Murtha. They were wrong then and JAck’s still wrong today. But Clinton actually decided to withdraw from Somalia before congress voted to cease funding the operation which was turing from a UN humanitarian effort into an all out war.

So, do you still agree with Jack knowing what you know now?

This is what the conservative â€œNational Reviewâ€ wrote in its Nov. 29, 1993 issue about the GOP push to cut and run from Somalia:

And since the Nation Review was praising Clinton for wanting to stay and clear up the mess and the repugs wanted to…CUT AND RUN …who aided the Al Queada like they did under Reagan when they got their start…and under Bush 41 when he left afghanistan to them?
