ThinkFast AM: June 2, 2006

A federal grand jury has subpoenaed California’s San Bernardino County for records connected to House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis (R-CA) and a lobbying firm with strong ties to Lewis.

Bush’s nomination of Henry Paulson to be Treasury Secretary has riled some conservatives, who now want to “find a senator who will place a hold on the nomination.” Paulson chaired the Nature Conservancy and supports the Kyoto Protocol. “He’s a lefty Nature Conservancy nut,” said one “outside-the-White House adviser.”

An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore’s new movie about global warming, opens today in cities in California, Connecticut, DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington. See if it’s playing in your town.

The Justice Department and Alaska have exercised a clause allowing them to receive more funding to clean up the Exxon Valdez oil spill. “They announced in a statement that they would seek $92 million from Exxon Mobil to clean up stubborn patches of oil, whose most toxic components, they say, have not dissipated since the spill in 1989.”

86: The percent of Americans who believe “the FBI should be allowed to search a Congress member’s office if it has a warrant,” according to a new ABC News poll. The poll found this view to be “broadly bipartisan.”

Women now earn the majority of diplomas in once male-dominated fields — including business and biology — and “have caught up in pursuit of law, medicine, and other advanced degrees.” Despite the gains, women still make just 76 percent of what men earn.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on FEMA’s hurricane preparations: “It’s like a football team. You know, the preparation pre-season is what determines how you perform during the season. So we put that work in, and I’ve been personally engaged.” (Let’s hope FEMA performs better than the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.)

Internet and telephone companies are “girding to fight an unprecedented call by the Bush administration” asking them to keep records of customers’ online activities for two years. “It’s a real break with precedent. … The government is saying, ‘Keep everything about everyone and we’ll sort it out later,’” said Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

The War Tapes, the first movie filmed by soldiers on the front lines in Iraq, opens today at the Sunshine Landmark Theater in New York City. The New York Post notes it is “one of the most important films to come out of Operation Iraqi Freedom.”

And finally, if she could turn back time, she’d get safer helmets to our troops. On the Sunday morning edition of C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal,” a caller “launched into a passionate argument for helmet safety upgrades for troops.” Host Steve Scully recognized the caller: “Is this Cher?” he asked. “Yeah,” Cher replied. The entertainer’s new cause, Operation Helmet, has given 6,850 safety liners to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

How the Hell did Henry Paulson get the nod from the WH?

He is their latest Harriet Myers… not that he is an unqualified croney like she… he is just the latest example of a WH that does not do its homework.

Didn’t they know that he stood in direct opposition to Bush’s environmental policy?

Thats what I was trying to put together in my head too. Are they putting him up and purposely making his environmental beliefs an issue when they are a non-issue just to say when he is appointed..”Hey look prez Bush is a guy who listens to others with different opinions…see?” All the while being Treasury Secretary, he won’t deal with these issues at all.

What is with those wacky left-wing treehuggers and their “caring for the planet,” “acting as stewards,” worrying about what sort of environmental disasters we’re leaving for our grandchildren, and — and this one really gets me — trying to reduce humans’ exposure to hazardous substances through casual contact with rain, air, or soil.” Phew, how can any of those be supported by a God-fearing Christian? These people hate freedom.

Next up: in a covert operation, all electronic communication devices sold in the United States will be required to supply a continuous audio (with or without video) feed to the NSA [Thought Police] in “a limited operation to catch terrorists.”

The “Right to Privacy” is not expressly spelled out in the Constitution. But we can all trust the Bush Administration will not use any of this information against political opponents.

  11. bobcat_grad says:

Can we address the fact that the White House announced last night that Bush intends to give a speech on Monday regarding his support for a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage?

    Let’s look at this:

    1) The announcement is made on a Thursday night. Why? To get plenty of play in the Friday papers and news cycles as well as the Sunday talking heads shows. This differs from the normal approach of the White House of announcing crappy news late Friday night so it gets burried in the papers and ignored by news outlets.

    2) Divert, divert, divert. Since this administration has done so well with the Iraq occupation, the handling of Iran, immigration reform, and that awesome energy policy, let’s all focus on the real problem facing this country. The one issue that will fix all of the other problems we’re facing. That mostest importantest issue that if addressed, will put an end to world hunger, discover a new energy source, fix corrupt politicians, and save the galaxy fom certain destruction: gay marriage.

    3) Honestly, GOPers…. you think this has a snowball’s chance in hell of getting passed? You need two-thirds of Congress to vote ‘Yea’ on it. Good luck at that. Then you need three-fourths of the state legislatures to vote ‘Yea.’ Riiiiiiight. 38 states need to vote for it.

Let’s look at this for what it is. A strictly political ploy by the GOP to rile up their homophobic base in order to divert attention from the fact that a majority of the GOP leadership over the past six years has failed at everything they’ve touched.

Which is why there should be public financing of all elections. If each canidate is given a set amount to spend, and outside funds are not allowed, then it truly comes down to a showdown based on ideas, not money.

And once elected, the politician then has only one group he feels he needs to work for: his constituents. What a strange concept, eh?

I dare a Republican to tell me how that would be bad for the country. Elections based upon competing ideas on issues and the resulting winner being accountable only to their constituents.

BS on that advanced degree statement. Women that hold advanced degrees and work in the same field as men using that degree make between 90 to 97% of what men do. Putting this demographic among the general population is just plain stupid. Having worked in that area, the only reason that women don’t make as much is due to some of them taking time off to have children. The US is far behind other nations in this respect, including many in the third world. The glass ceiling is as strong as ever as mentoring is practically dead and the “pancaking” of the corporate ladder has led to few options in moving up the ladder when there are so few steps.

I’ve worked in the decision sciences (data mining is just a small part), and MIS for almost 30 years and I’m sick of the misinformation that is regurgitated without determining the numbers based upon the specific population being tested. Lying with statistics is just as bad on the left as it is on the right and both are poor examples of professionalism.

“I can say unambiguously that all the agreements from yesterday’s meetings rule out, in any circumstances, the use of military force,” the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, was quoted as saying by Moscow’s RIA news agency.

  24. Tobey tall says:

I have said this before and I’ll say it again and again until there is a breath left in me. No one, should ever trust a single word of anything that Blair or Bush or their respective administrations utter – never. They are the most despicable, contemptible, murderous liars and Iran should treat their offers with complete and utter contempt. The Russians, Chinese, the French and Germans in particular should read Jonathan Steele’s article and should remember that not to pay any heed whatsoever to any offer made by the US and the UK. They most positively should not ever vote in favour of any UN resolution drafted, proposed or supported by these two administrations. Their suport should automatically trigger veto by the other three permanent members no matter what topic it relates to. These other three along with the rest of the UN should leave no stone unturned to oust both the US and the UK out of the Security Council. The US and the UK – not even the IAEA – have any right whatsoever to stop Iran doing what it is allowed to do under the NPT, ie nuclear enrichment up to a degree and testing. To stop such testing as a pre-condition of talks as proposed by the US and now apparently adopted by the other five who met in Vienna yesterday is most reprehensible. It should insist on unconditional talks.

  25. Just plain mad says:

You have $6/year to spare? How would you like to get rid of corporate influence in federal politics?

Sound good to you? Yea, me too.

There’s an organization chaired by Ds and Rs alike called Americans for Campaign Reform. Here’s an excerpt from the homepage:

Think of it. With public funding, wealthy special interests and their hired lobbyists would no longer have a commanding influence over our politics and government. Instead of begging for campaign donations, candidates would spend their time communicating with voters. Once elected, our leaders would be free to focus on our nation’s challenges rather than having to worry about financing their next campaign. And there’s no doubt that more of our most able leaders would run for federal office when the ability to finance a campaign isn’t such a daunting obstacle.

No Equal Rights Amendment. We can get Congress to jump on them for banning flag burning and gay marriage, oh,, and automatic salaries increases that only they can deny by vote – but not an amendmentthat requires equal rights.

I never had kids. Was dedicated to my profession for 14 years and made less than my male counterparts – including those who were less competent. Corporate America is still patriarchally structured. Women are considered inferior. Even if they don’t state it in board rooms, and if it has its exceptions. Things are slowly improving – but until we make women equal with men, our country will contunue to function like an Industrialized Nation anomoly (most others treat women equally and have better living standards – less crime, poverty, and better health and employment rates).

  52. sanjay says:

“Despite the gains, women still make just 76 percent of what men earn.”

Because statistics show that men earn more than women, we assume that men are paid more than women for the same work. But think about this: if women really are paid less, why would anyone hire a man? The truth, is that the pay gap can no longer be attributed to large-scale discrimination against women. Men who earn more most often do so not because of their gender, but because “the invisible curriculum of male socialization” influences the choices they make. For example, to get higher pay, men are more likely to enter higher-paying fields, perform riskier tasks, take positions with less stability and less fulfillment, and work longer hours – a choice that doesn’t just translate as “more hours, more money,” but also opens the door to much more lucrative job and career opportunities. Although it’s men who are more likely to make such choices, the fact is, both men and women who do so usually earn more than those who choose otherwise. Are they the right choices for you? For men, women, and their families, some choices will lead to higher income, some to a more balanced life. And quite a few will help achieve both.

I tend to assume the best of cops until the evidence forces otherwise, so odds are I would defend them as much as possible.

Come on now big papa, theres enough real slurs that fit to throw at me, that you shouldn’t have to resort to ones that arn’t true ie. treasonous, inbred(most of my family is liberal, so thats one you might really want to drop).

Know how to relax? Become a liberal. Seriously. I bet my blood pressure dropped by twenty points when I gave up fear and anxiety… and the Republican Party.

Saved my butt, more than once! On vacation, I cut loose, but hate to suffer for it. Feel better! :)

Thanks, I’ve had a ton of the water and the caffene today. I’ve heard of those miracle products, but have yet to try them.

They actually work. I cannot have ONE beer without ending up with a hangover, but I use the pills (I am losing it! I cannot remember what they are called but they are big and orange), and I do not have a headache or stomache the next day.

Cops: Couple ordered hit on grandkids

Wanted to stop testimony at son’s rape trial, police say

    Friday, June 2, 2006; Posted: 12:35 p.m. EDT (16:35 GMT)

TAVARES, Florida (AP) — A couple tried to hire a hit man to kill their three grandchildren and daughter-in-law to stop them from testifying against their son in his rape trial, authorities said.

The couple, ages 60 and 59, were charged with four counts each of criminal conspiracy to commit murder. They were being held without bond.

Police said the pair initially offered $100 to an undercover sheriff’s deputy to kill their son’s wife, their 10-year-old granddaughter, two step-grandchildren, ages 14 and 16, and the family dog.

More money was promised after the killings, said Lake County sheriff’s Sgt. Christie Mysinger.

The couple’s 31-year-old son has been jailed since November on 22 charges of sexual battery on a child, lewd and lascivious molestation and showing obscene material to a minor, court records show.

Regarding the FBI checking the offices of elected officials:

Lee H. Hamilton said, “We should insist that governments receiving American aid live up to standards of accountability and transparency…” When will our elected officials start leading by example instead of self-righteously preaching to others?

Without accountability from our elected officials we’re gonners for sure.

The nuts truly do not fall far from the tree. Only makes perfect sense that the son of these two freaks is a rapist.

Time for the being fruitful and multiplying to stop….

“An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore’s new movie about global warming, opens today in cities in California…”

TL, you mean ‘opens wide.’ It has already been playing for a week — my friends and I saw it yesterday, and wow, it is an expertly made pitch, which is going to resonate in DVD release across all political boundaries. Go in with an ounce of interest in what that bastard Gore is saying, and come out ready to put a solar-powered Al Gore for President of the Universe sign on your front lawn.

No one since Ronald Reagan has shown this kind of folksy appeal. He is on his way to being the beloved of every grandmother and child in the country and the world. An awesome, awesome, totally understated and humble (while promoting himself shamelessly) accomplishment.

Comes complete with a fairly-extensive pitch for prayer (that Americans will select the right kind of brave poltiicians to solve this problem) at the end. Get ready for your ‘red-state’ friends to announce that they are changing out their lightbulbs and their tired, deceptive political allegiances.

    All Gore, All the Time.
Turn OUT a light for Gore.
