“The Pentagon has decided to omit from new detainee policies a key tenet of the Geneva Convention that explicitly bans ‘humiliating and degrading treatment,’ … a step that would mark a further, potentially permanent, shift away from strict adherence to international human rights standards.†The State Department “fiercely opposes” the decision “and has been pushing for the Pentagon and White House to reconsider.”
Though President Bush has publicly embraced the constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, “he never seemed to care enough to press the matter,” according to Newsweek. Says one “old friend” of Bush’s: “I think it was purely political. I don’t think he gives a s**t about it. He never talks about this stuff.”
$50 million: Amount outside interests have paid since 2000 to shuttle Members of Congress and their staffs around the world. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) took one of the most expensive trips — more than $20,000 “for a one-day trip from Washington to Hidalgo, Texas, to accept an award as The BorderFest Border Texan of the Year.”
“The world’s deserts are under threat as never before, with global warming making lack of water an even bigger problem for the parched regions,” according to a new United Nations report. Rainfall could drop by 20 percent by the end of the century “due to human-induced climate change.”
New research published in the journal Science is also showing that the “world’s tropical zones are growing, threatening to drive the world’s great deserts into southern Europe and other heavily populated areas.”
Iraq’s sectarian violence continues. “Gunmen wearing police uniforms raided bus stations in central Baghdad, abducting at least 50 people, including drivers and passengers preparing to travel outside Iraq.” Elsewhere, “masked gunmen stopped two minivans carrying students north of Baghdad, ordered the passengers off, separated Shiites from Sunni Arabs, and killed the 21 Shiites ‘in the name of Islam.’”
“In the three years since Americans gained federal protection for their private medical information, the Bush administration has received thousands of complaints alleging violations but has not imposed a single civil fine and has prosecuted just two criminal cases.”
Progress in battling HIV/AIDS in the United States has “slowed to a crawl” since the epidemic first began 25 years ago. There have been no major treatment discoveries “for almost 10 years, when the drug cocktails were first introduced,” and the creation of a cure or vaccine, “is not close to becoming a reality.”
The American Bar Association’s board of governors voted unanimously this weekend “to investigate whether President Bush has exceeded his constitutional authority in reserving the right to ignore more than 750 laws that have been enacted since he took office.”
And finally: Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is hosting more than 200 mayors at the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual meeting. “I want everyone going home…saying Oscar Goodman is the coolest mayor who ever lived,” Goodman said, adding that critics who thought the corporate-funded party was unethical were “haters,” “misanthropes” and “complainers.”
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Yeah, he is full of s**t – regardless of what he’s talking about.
There was a clip from a recorded phone call between Bush and a friend of his prior to his occupation of the White House. Jon Stewart played it on the Daily Show. Essentially, Bush was telling his friend (I’m assuming former-friend now), that he would not discriminate against gays. If he can lie to the general public about everything, then he can equally lie to his base… This would be one of those times when we should actually hope that his pants are in flames…

June 5th, 2006 at 9:28 amWhy is the party of states’ rights so bent on creating an amendment that takes the states’ right to determine their law on gay marriage/civil union?
Oh, I know. It’s a smokescreen because:
1. The war in Iraq is going so well
2. With the ballooning national debt, they just stopped trying to count that high
3 Who cares if 45 million Americans have no healthcare, Bush and Congress does
4. We must have an energy surplus. Maybe we found a magical source of energy that eliminates our dependence on oil
5. All of the corruption has been eliminated from Congress and all the lobbyists packed up and went home.
Way to go GOP! Pick an issue with no chance of passing that shows people how to discriminate for the sheer political purpose of being able to use the voting record of your opponent in this Novemeber election. I can see it now….
“I love God, family, and country. I’m a stand up guy. I rule. My opponent must love Satan and killing babies because he voted against the amendment to protect us all from those evil homosexuals.”
Thanks, GOP, for not letting me down. I knew your entire platform would return to “Fear and Queers” eventually. After all, you guys really stink at the rest of governing. How about you just quit and let people who care about someone other than themselves give it a shot again?

June 5th, 2006 at 9:34 amBoy oh boy, I sure do trust Bill Frist and George Bush and Wayne Allard to put all those changes in the Constitution that Thomas Jefferson and James Madison forgot.
Whatever happened to original intent? Even though there were gays back then, and the number of men wearing wigs was far greater, they didn’t see a need to outlaw gay marriage.

June 5th, 2006 at 9:54 amI just want to remind everyone about what a jobless economy this is. In May, only 75,000 new jobs were posted.
I know few readers are watching the Bureau of Labor Statistics website (http://www.bls.gov/), but I have been. Every month, the BLS posts new data. It also updates old data for past months. Every month so far this year, the previous months’ data has been revised DOWNWARD. What was reported in March as over 200,000 new jobs in Februrary is now reported as 175,000 jobs. What was reported in March as 138,000 jobs for April is now reported as 126,000. This month, the new jobs for May are reported as only 75,000. Just as new graduates are appearing in the job market, this is the lowest new jobs figure since October. In most months, about 150,000 new workers enter the job market, how many more will enter this month?
For all you trolls who long to kick Bill Clinton around: I want to remind you that at this point in his administration, 15,916,000 net new jobs had been reported. President Bush has reported only 2,635,000 net new jobs in over 5 years. Mr. Clinton is 13,281,000 jobs ahead. To report 2,748,000 new jobs – more than Mr. Bush’s 5+ years total – Mr Clinton needed only 12 months. For May of Mr. Clinton’s sixth year, he reported 401,000 new jobs, his seventh-best month.
For all you trolls who long to kick Democrats around: Mr. Clinton and his fellow Democrat, Jimmy Carter, reported a total of 33,068,000 net new jobs in their combined 12 years. In their combined 25+ years, Republican presidents since 1968 (Nixon, Ford, Reagan, GHW Bush and GW Bush) have reported 32,583,000 net new jobs. In less than half the time, they had more jobs to report.
The difference is 485,000 jobs. That’s more than Mr. Bush’s best month of 354,000; it’s more than ELEVEN TIMES Mr. Bush’s average month of 41,000 jobs. It is not however, more than Mr. Clinton’s best month of 506,000 jobs. (btw, Mr. Clinton’s average month was 237,000 jobs, not quite six times Mr. Bush’s average.)
Trolls, you can flap your all you want, but the HARD TRUTH is that the last two Democrats have been better for the United States economy than the last 5 Republicans.
June 5th, 2006 at 10:04 amPete,
I think your number go one step further and show that Corporate Welfare and Trickle Down do not create jobs as the theories suggests. And therefore, we should tax the rich, and we’ll see the recovery in our economy that Bush has not provided…

June 5th, 2006 at 10:19 amDubya: Gay Marriages Are Bad?
Monday 5th of June 2006
by Jay Randal
The United States of America has many problems, but Gay marriages are NOT one of them, so Dubya Dunce Decider fomenting this NON issue is plain disgusting!
Gays getting married does NOT threaten the sanctity of heterosexual marriages, NOR does it undermine any religious groups doctrines or ceremonies either!
Those who believe in traditional marraige between a man and a woman have NO reasons to fear Gay males or lesbians getting hitched in Civil Unions in any state!
Everyone’s sexuality and attraction is a personal matter and the Federal government has NO business butting into the personal issues of consenting adults sex lives!
Republicans in Washington, DC, are vile hypocrites regarding sexual activities, because they are exposed frequently in the hiring of female or male prostitutes!
President George W. Bush himself has NEVER fully explained his association with Jeff Gannon, the male escort/prostitute, neither does he exemplify morality!
( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Stone Mountain, Georgia.)

June 5th, 2006 at 11:34 amQuestion: Will the ‘Republican’ mayor of Spokane, Washington be in favor of the gay marriage amendment to ban gay marriage just for grins and giggles?
One would think that the ‘Republicans’ would be all in favor of gay marriage since more than a few of them are all in favor of homosexual activity.
They can do whatever they dern well please, those ‘Republicans.’ They can board a slow boat to China for all I care. I-Right-I would be right there arm-in-arm with Michael Huffington and James West.
The ‘Republicans’ make strange bedfellows, don’t they? They’re the picture of infantile regression.

June 5th, 2006 at 12:13 pmZookeeper,
They said it was too long and they cut it down to the first paragraph. I told them the first paragraph wasn’t the point I wanted to make, so I suggested they remove the whole thing. So they did. However, if you want to see what I wrote (including the typos I had in there originally), go to the conservatives-give-shaft-to-mine-safety thread on the next “page” (go to older posts). It’s comment #49. Apparently it wasn’t too long when I posted it the first time with the typos. I can only hope they leave it there. The thread kind of died out and my ego didn’t want to let it go, so I re-posted it in his thread. Enjoy. I have to get back to work.

June 5th, 2006 at 1:06 pmIf amending the constitution to discriminate against a particular segment of Americans is the priority that pandering politicians of the Republican ‘persuasion’ claim that it is, why didn’t this issue succeed in 2004, when the Republicans were using it to ‘motivate’ their ‘base’ to go out and vote? It just sort of… went away. And the ’suckers’ are falling for it again. And once again, this issue will fade away, after the election, till it is needed again. Predictable, and pathetic.
June 5th, 2006 at 1:21 pmLet me get this straight Wayney-If someone doesn’t care for your bloviating blogs, then they are killers.Oh yea,let me read more of your garbage.
June 5th, 2006 at 1:25 pm#37 Cyra,
It did “work” in that they got people out to the polls. That was the true goal of bringing this issue up then, just as it is now. They know it won’t pass, but it can be used to get their supporters out to the polls on Election Day even if there are no gay marriage bans on the ballots in those states.

June 5th, 2006 at 1:32 pmNo, Critique, you did not at all get that straight. I never said that anyone who disagreed with me was a killer. I can’t for the life of me figure out how you arrived at that conclusion, but if this is how you “reason” things out, then I don’t believe that I can help you further. I do hope you find the inner peace and satisfaction you seem to lack. Have a nice life. Goodbye.
June 5th, 2006 at 1:33 pm#41 Zookeeper,
I have given it some thought, but the financial situation made that idea pointless to pursue further. Besides, for the time being, this is the community I’d rather be posting with. For me, having my own website and going back and forth to here would be redundant. I just have to learn to say what I want to say more efficiently without losing thoroughness. And I have to figure out just how long is “too long” for TP’s tastes.
But thanks for the encouragement. I do appreciate it. When we finally have computers and internet access at home, it will be something to consider. Until then, I’ll post here if they’ll let me.
June 5th, 2006 at 1:39 pmWayne, ‘critique’ is a flaming troll who also goes by the names ‘Denny’, and ‘E Coli’ among others. It was trying to harrass me for a couple of weeks, but finally threw itself on the floor and cried “Now leave me alone” when I gave it a hearty dose of it own medicine.
It has no arguments, no facts, and no logic. It’s just here to hurl insults and be harassing, for unknown reasons. It especially seems to detest anyone with a functioning brain or a valid opinion (which you have both).
As Plato said ‘ Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.’ You are the first, ‘critique’, the latter.
June 5th, 2006 at 1:43 pm# 39- Yes Wayne, that was exactly my point. They could care less about ‘Gay Marriage”. But they know that the people who vote for them DO care about it, and are shamelessly exploiting that fact to make sure they get out and vote, and while they are at it, vote for the Republicans on the ballot. I am only pointing out the manipulation of the bigots, for political gain.
June 5th, 2006 at 1:57 pmPost 40 Zookeeper > Bush in his spare time seemed to be getting banged by Jeff Gannon, before Jeffy Bulldog got outed by the press?! Jeff, real name James Guckert, according to Secret Service logs for the White House show that Jeff visited Bush over 200 times for a few hours from around 2002 to 2004 > records also show he did not sign out at night at least 12 times so who did he sleep with on those nights? Jeff on his escort website claims he is a TOP only, and does not kiss, so anyone who hires him must be a submissive BOTTOM for sex! Jeff charged $200 an hour or $1,200 for an overnight stay for his services! If Bush is bi-sexual or really Gay , then he must be outed to the entire nation as a hypocrite!

June 5th, 2006 at 2:22 pmAre you treating Wayne the way you want to be treated?
Sooner or later, most of us seem to get back what we give off…
What I actually wrote was “Please have a nice day and remember not to kill anyone unnecessarily. ” I did not encourage anyone to kill anyone else. I only asked that it not be done unnecessarily. Sometimes you have to use deadly force to protect yourself, your loved ones, or people for whom you are responsible. But if that’s not the case, then try not to kill anyone unneccassarily.

I’m with you on this one… As long as their isn’t gross negligence – she took the risk and should have to deal with the consequences.
Now, if she has sued them for the botched procedure because it affected HER health, due to general negligence, I might not be so inclined to agree with you…
June 5th, 2006 at 4:08 pm#52 and 55. Why is there any dilemma here?
The procedure is should not result in a live birth.
If there is a “child” of any shape, proportion or condition, the clinic has not rendered service, and the woman should have recourse.
June 5th, 2006 at 4:30 pmOK, If the doctor refuses to give an abortion he is a Facist bastard who is a NeoCon blah blah. If he screws it up for the baby it’s OK and no big deal. If he screws it up and it effects the mother there is a huge problem.
It sounds like you want your cake and to eat it too. You can’t demand the right to have an abortion but when complications with surgery (As happen with any surgery) happen expect to slam the doctor and blame him.

So refund her two hundred dollars… That’s all you can sure for in all other cases.
Plus, she didn’t know it failed? Go back and say “Uh, I’m still pregnant. I paid you to undo it and you didn’t, so fix it.” Again, also the legal process in this country. She had a joint responsibility here.
June 5th, 2006 at 4:44 pm“I’m with you on this one… As long as their isn’t gross negligence – she took the risk and should have to deal with the consequences.”
She isn’t dealing with the consequences, her now deformed child is.
June 5th, 2006 at 4:44 pmhappen expect to slam the doctor and blame him.
Comment by Tundra — June 5, 2006 @ 4:41 pm
If he is negligent (did not use reasonable care as would have other qualified doctors in his or her situation), then yes, he has a level of accountability.
But if he or she was responsible, then they aren’t accountable for what happened after the women left the clinic… how could they know she was still preganant 100% unless she tells them she is. Maybe they should do a preganancy test after the fact the be certain. But she choce to have the baby.
This is a two-way street. A professional to use the utmost care and be responsible – and the woman to expect to get what she paid for. Neither is 100% responsible here.
June 5th, 2006 at 4:51 pmShe isn’t dealing with the consequences, her now deformed child is.

I was just letting you know my agreement wasn’t blind or absolute… I know how you conservatives take everything that way, so I was inserting my right to consider each instance on its individual merits…
June 5th, 2006 at 4:54 pm“I know how you conservatives take everything that way, so I was inserting my right to consider each instance on its individual merits”
Groovy, I can dig it.
June 5th, 2006 at 4:57 pmMy comment was more for bb.
Sure I feel the doctor should use all possible care. Just as with any other surgery. If they do everything they can and a heart transplant doesn’t work, well you did pay for a new heart and didn’t get a working one. In this case she paid for a dead baby and got a live one, sorry for her loss.
As long as the doctor was not neglent, he/she shouldn’t be responsible (My 2 cents). I know it’s not a popular opinion but counseling for people deciding on this surgery and liability forms need to be considered as with any other type of surgery.
June 5th, 2006 at 4:58 pmQuestion: What do we say to this little girl who would have been otherwise healthy and is now messed up for life?
Well, it was your moms right to abort you? Should the state now step in and take this poor child (I’m sort of leaning that way here)? If the state takes it can she still sue?
