Ian Murray, senior fellow at the Exxon-backed Competitive Enterprise Institute, writes for the National Review on global warming issues. Today, he excerpts some promotional material from a horror movie that he says “mirrors Al Gore’s views” on global warming:
[G]lobal warming is caused by the widespread sin, immorality, and materialism of our current society. The looting and murders after these disasters struck are further evidence of the Antichrist’s coming. The Bible’s revelation predicts that it will be under these conditions that the mark of the Beast will come upon us.
Global warming skeptics can’t challenge Al Gore on the substance, so they just smear him personally. This is what is left of the “debate” about climate change.
Stand up against Murray’s smear tactics. Pledge to go see An Inconvenient Truth.
under these conditions that the mark of the Beast will come upon us.
Little pansy flit should keep his fantasies to himself.

the right term is CEI “scholar”
obfuscation of science really isn’t scholarship, under any definition
June 6th, 2006 at 3:17 pmThat would be the official RNC haircut Ian’s sporting there, along with their backwards approach to science.

June 6th, 2006 at 3:21 pm“Global warming skeptics can’t challenge Al Gore on the substance, so they just smear him personally.”
No it’s just another distraction. Any moment now, one of the trolls will post a story about an abortion lawsuit or Katrina relief abuse, and change the subject.
June 6th, 2006 at 3:23 pm#6 Well, americans like doing their way. As the Amish people.
June 6th, 2006 at 3:24 pmCan you believe someone who looks like Karl Rove’s bot-toy? These people will hire anybody with an 11th grade education as their spokesman.
June 6th, 2006 at 3:24 pmMatthew says this mirror’s Al Gore’s views. He’s right. Gore claims global warming is a moral issue, so he’d probably agree with the statement, “global warming is caused by the widespread sin, immorality, and materialism of our current society
so by this logic:
My buddy John says Bush is an evil asshole, and he is right. So, our monstrous president will probably agree with the statement “Killing babies and drinking their blood adds years to my life.”
this can be fun!

Look I switched to http://www.good-energy.co.uk a couple years ago the right wing nutz will never change but the others have no excuse change now its actually cheaper too , my house produces 0 co2 emitions per year
Is there any plumbers here that know have to knozzle up a cows arse to my gas central heating
Environmental Impact
The environmental impact of each fuel source is different.
Good Energy uses 100% renewable electricity. This will have generated zero grammes of carbon dioxide per kWh and zero grammes of high-level radio active waste.
Electricity generated from coal fired power stations will have generated 910 grammes of CO2 to produce 1kWh of electricity and natural gas will have produced 360 grammes of CO2 for each kWh.
It is stated that nuclear power produces zero grammes of CO2 but it will have produced 0.012 grammes of high-level radio active waste per kWh.
June 6th, 2006 at 3:25 pmTHAT’S the goober we’re fighting against??? Ah hah hahahaha!!! I can smell the pocket protector, the internet dating service, and the stench of WAY too many swirlies and noogies in both his past and future…..

June 6th, 2006 at 3:32 pmIan, should just speak to his friends about cleaning up their mess in Prince Edward Sound. And forget about the other nonsense.
The key is this idiot works for an exxon front company. Like we should take anything he has to say on global warming seriously….. ummmm yeah right.

June 6th, 2006 at 3:39 pmGore believes in Santa Claus, therfore his arguments on Global warming are logically refuted.
Makes sense to me.

June 6th, 2006 at 3:47 pmTobey Tall,
FYI: Australia is the worst polluter.
Also, it’s damned hard to get anyone to do anything different here. It’s a horror show!
I live on Cape Cod, and there’s been a virtual war around here re: Wind Mill Project on Nantucket Sound.
It’s a WONDERFUL idea, except that the rich pr*cks on the ocean won’t have their pristeen views anymore. So they are fighting it tooth and nail. And they are winning, because they have the money.
This is what America has become. We are trying to fight the good fight, but the “elite”, and braindead Republicans are thwarting every forward step.

June 6th, 2006 at 4:01 pmWhen I hear this kind of rhetorical spew comming from the lunatic right, It stuns me into a discombobulated silence for a moment. Its kind of like listening to a schizophrenic describe his day. I don’t even know where to start the deconstruction of thier argument because it is ludicrous on its face.
I am convinced, now more than ever, that this reaction is induced by design, in order to relegate the topic to the carnival of madness, from which there is no return. If I abridge the facts by supplanting its premise with an absurdity, the facts can be more easily dismissed as absurd by proxy.

Right-wingers non-acceptance of science, including their denial that global warming is happening, helps to promote the stereotype that they’re nothing by a bunch of ignorant hillbillies.

That’s for sure. 34/ but these figures are per emmsions per head, Aussie only has a small population also say 15 million or something , its quite low still compared to the total Emmisions of the US

Once again I suggest we take back Jesus… that is the only crutch they got. Take that away and they are just nazis through and through. The nazis talked christianity also. All their evil was hidden behind their “good white christianity” … They want to call us GODLESS? well they are ANTI-JESUS … their actions make that clear and they have been caught on tape being antiJesus. For everytime they say to murder someone flash a picture of Jesus and then WWJD? For everytime they talk about welfare give aways to the poor flash a picture of Jesus and then WWJD? They do not represent wholesome family values…. where was the family values in the pictures of the dead iraqi families? where was the family values when a priest had his hands down some childs pants? Where were the family values when Pat Robertson called for the assasination of Chavez? Where was the family values right after Katrina? The family Jesus talked about wasnt between a man and a woman… it was between all humans with all others.
Their claim to be the protectors of good needs to be questioned. Their actions will NOT stand up to scrutiny.

June 6th, 2006 at 4:45 pmViewpoint of Germany wow they are son in front
German nuclear phase-out
Outgoing German environment minister Jurgen Trittin played a key role in the country’s decision to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2020.
Nuclear power is not needed to achieve this. Quite the contrary: technically speaking, this base-load relic of the past is standing in the way of flexible and intelligent electricity production.
In contrast to Germany, Finland has commissioned Europe’s first new reactor in a decade. MP Mikko Elo supports the decision.
Viewpoint: Finland’s new reactor
The safety risks associated with nuclear power have in no way decreased in recent years - in particular with regard to the threat of terrorism, they have in fact increased dramatically.
And as far as the long-term management of radioactive wastes is concerned, we are fundamentally no wiser than we were 30 years ago.
The use of nuclear power is and will remain a global risk, especially for future generations.
Who can today presume to say, or even begin to imagine, what the world will be like in 24,000 years?
This is the half-life period of plutonium-239, which is generated in huge volumes during nuclear fission.
However, what we do know today is that 24,000 years ago Olkiluoto [where Finland is building a new reactor], for example, was buried under around 3,000m of ice.
June 6th, 2006 at 4:48 pm#63 - Good one, trueblue! What do you think of our little Ian? His face looks as soft as his hair, which is probably as soft as his tummy. I’m a little obsessed myself…if the boy loses his virginity…hell will freeze over…it’s the end of global warming!!
June 6th, 2006 at 4:49 pmIan Murray can just eat my shorts.
I think what it boils down to is that the Republicans are pissed that a Democrat is leading the charge against global warming. They didn’t take action first, so they’ve got to trash the idea and anyone that supports it.
As for man’s effect on our environment, consider:
(1) Heat islands above Atlanta alter weather above city; cause is due to increased construction, number of autos, and destruction of trees. Increased thunderstorm activity seen.
More: http://science.nasa.gov/ newhome/ headlines/ essd26apr99_1.htm
(2) Contrails from jets form clouds; will be significant climate factor by the year 2050.

June 6th, 2006 at 5:12 pmwhat im saying in this thread is America get your act together and change your suppliers of electricity to a greener source its actually cheaper all it takes is a few to change supplier and demand will have to follow
Look at that beautifully constructed criticism post 68# the German mentality of nuclear power
Also post 10# 35 million Europeans have green supplies compared to 1 million americans
its seems to me as Europe is overtaking the once great America in all Aspects of Technology we are becoming the new worlds powerhouse especially when The great Chavez changes to Petrol euros
we have BMW, Porche, Ferrari you have Ford
we have almost 0 waiting lists in hospitals you have people dying cause of goverment neglect , your a joke
You have for too much expenditure on weapons and space and not enough on anything worthwhile for the people except super wheat
I hope America changes soon before it is left behind forever stuck in its neantherdal ways

I agree that Europe IS taking over the US.
One look at our education system shows you; we are dumbing down!
Great teachers like Unbelievable are pretty much being forced out for the mediocre minions. It’s disgusting!
Plus we have this awful, complacent attitude.
I drive a Toyota Corolla. Why? Because it’s DEPENDABLE! I’d NEVER buy a Ford. Plus, my Corolla was actually built here in the US.
Anyway, maybe it’s time for us to NOT be #1.
Maybe a little humility will do us good.

June 6th, 2006 at 5:22 pmI can see and hear the new CEI commercial now…
[Opening shot of blue sky over Montana. 2 jets streak by in the distance.]
Narrator:
“It’s true that contrails (short for condensation trails) from jet aircraft produce clouds. But clouds are good.”
[Cut to shot of log cabin in Vermont woods in late December. Time: 20 minutes after sunrise. Smoke rising from chimney of woodburning fireplace]
Narrator:
“In the winter, moisture-laden clouds produce the pretty snowfalls we have on Christmas day. They also hold in warmth from the sun to make our winter nights a bit less frigid.”
[Cut to young couple walking on a lonely beach on the California coast]
Narrator:
“In the summer they shield us from the hot sun and give us refreshing, cool rains.
But the most important part?”
[Cut to trees in forest. Camera slowly panning up to show trees reaching into a sun-filled sky]
Narrator:
“Like the increased levels of carbon dioxide that we enjoy, water produced from clouds gives us life.”
[Cut to black screen. Words by narrator appear on screen as they are read]
“Life. Brought to you by water and carbon dioxide.”

June 6th, 2006 at 5:27 pmLike 300 W/m² average solar irradiance strikes the surface of the Earth. Multiply that times a 10% efficiency of Solar Photovoltaic cells, times the seconds in a year and you got the electricity produced in a year per square meter in (Joules/m²) (1) (use International System, please) Find the electricity consumed in the world in a year (2) (in Joules or Terajoules, easier). Then the area you need to feed the world with PV is the ratio of (1)/(2) in square meters. Done.

June 6th, 2006 at 6:28 pmHow ironic that the CEI makes this statement of June 6, 2006 (6/6/6).
For evangelical leaders close to President Bush such as Texas Pastor John Hagee, 666 has another important meaning for the future of the United States. 666 is the number to be borne by the Anti-Christ in the coming battle of Armageddon, which if Hagee has his way, will fought against Iran.

June 6th, 2006 at 7:05 pmI didn’t see the movie, but I suspect that some of Gore’s “substance” is the old line that CO2 increases have caused Global Warming. However, a quick look at global temp charts show a cooling period fro 1940-1975, which is incompatible with the CO2=warming claim.
June 6th, 2006 at 7:16 pm#106 Only if you believe that CO2 is the only factor in global climate. Scientific papers have addressed the many factors, of which man-made CO2 is rapidly becoming dominant. Why do Republicans insist on oversimplifying everything? From Bush’s third grade foreign policy to the we don’t know and can’t do anything about it anyway attitude on pollution.

Also show me a valid link from a competent study that supports your theory that global warming does not exhist. Support your claim.

June 6th, 2006 at 7:57 pmOh, for the love of all that’s sacred…you have GOTTA be kidding me. This guy’s trying to equate Gore’s concerns over global warming with apocolyptic hysteria? Give me a freakin’ break! And if we must discuss “the Mark of the Beast…[coming] upon us” — what this schmendrik conveniently neglects to mention is that if or when that prediction comes to pass, it will more than likely be those whom Murray currently supports who will be inflicting it on us in the guise of security. After all, if memory serves, the prophecy does suggest that the Beast will come disguised as a good man and not an evil one — and that many people who believe themselves to be good Christians will be led astray because they will believe him to be the returned Christ or at least a fellow believer in Christ.

June 6th, 2006 at 8:27 pmPoint: global warming is caused by human actions, due to our collective shortsightedness, greed, laziness, etc.
Counterpoint: the laxity of judgement, the consumerist disdain for other concerns, can be decried in purely logical, humanistic terms. A rigorous Proof of the maxim, “don’t shit where you eat,” if you will; not a shrill doomsday cult.
But you have to admit, linking “the plot of a horror movie” to “the politics of Gore” is witty, in a macabre, and, I’m sure, a wholly unintended way.

Interseting statement… You know there’s this whole rapture thing mentioned in the Bible. When that occurs, you’ll at least be rid of the Christians. Perhaps then you can form a one world government and outlaw the practice of any remaining religions.
June 7th, 2006 at 8:27 amAntagonist - you should change your name to Absolutist. Because it would fit better. You take any shade of grey - no matter how close to center it is and call it either ‘black’ or ‘white’ and then use it as a soap box to criticize something neither said nor intended… Especially when said in jest.
The Bible calls the Jews the ‘chosen people’… that means they’ll go as well.
June 7th, 2006 at 8:44 amUnbelievable—you should change your name to Denial, as your post-modern thought processes cuase you to deny all absolutes.
The Bible clearly teaches that there’s more to Israel than being a Jew—meaning that the “chosen people” as you so call them, are both Jews and Gentiles, but it’s not every Jew and every Gentile. In the Old Testament, the literal nation of Israel was God’s chosen people, but since Jesus’ resurection, Israel is symbolic of in terms of God’s chosen—hence the apostles teaching in the New Testament that not all of Israel is Israel.
In summary, you’ll still have some Jews remaining after the rapture, as well as many who thought they were Christians, and scores of other religions left behind. You’ll still need to outlaw religion in order to have your paradise :)
June 7th, 2006 at 9:17 amAntagonist - The only one in denial is you and people like you who buy into that fairytale nonsense of invisible idols and happily-ever-(boring)-after, and believe that there are absolutes in the human realm (perhaps in the universe - but they are larger than we are and therefore we are only capable of a human’s perspective - which is limited). Very few things are absolute. Most things are a shade of grey. When you get that about life - it goes so much more smoothly.
Well, no 666 catastrophe yesterday. You doom and gloomers can go back to being Jesus hypocrites… I however, am off to the new Aquarium. Later.

My eyes were opened even wider to the reality of EVOLUTION. Its fingerprints are everywhere - not one sign of ‘intelligent’ design.
There was this amazing display of jellyfish. A projected image on an adjacent wall said “Jellyfish are 97% water. They have no eyes, no heart and no brain - but they do have a basic nervous system. Not a damn thing intelligent about that. The list goes on, but I won’t.
Oh, here’s another sign of just no intelligence - they had to post that you could not bring, into the aquarium, guns, knives, matches, or - fishing poles! I’m still LMAO over that one… You actually have to repeatedly tell people that they cannot come in and fish!
There is no god. My life is far happier - and more moral in knowing that. Probably why there are about 15% of Americans who are not religious, but less than 1% of people in prison are not religious. Proportionately more of your side in jail than mine…

June 8th, 2006 at 1:51 pmNow that new Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson has taken over from hardliner Lee Raymond, the oil company has been trying to change its image to a kinder, gentler outfit, one that’s prepared to acknowledge there is such a thing as climate change. But after shrugging off environmentalists at his first annual meeting, and refusing to discuss global warming with pension funds, Tillerson has shown that it’s the same Exxon Mobil. In contrast with the rest of corporate America which is now worried about global warming. Read all about it at:

Do you not realize that this is a place where people debate issues? If you are too sensitive to hear an opposing view, then find a place more sugar-coated. It gets heated around here…
You have no basis for being self-righteous, and then expecting sympathy or pity or whatever it is you want. As the adage goes - if you want to be loved, then be lovable. And in this case - if you want to be ignored - then ignore. But that’s not what you did. And as much as you say it’s what you want - it’s not what your actions are saying now.

June 9th, 2006 at 1:24 am*** You guys sound like a bunch of chicken littlies telling the farmer the sky is falling…
Nature class 101, you should have been taught this in the first grade, but I will educate you non the less; You breathe out CO2… Trees breathe it in and produce oxygen… The circle of life, nature always provides a balance… Car combustion, be it Corn alcohol or oil based gasoline, both produce CO2… Switching to GREEN fuel will not stop this, actually it is 10 percent less efficient so it would POLLUTE(as you do every time you take a breath) more… So I say all you tree hugging nature nazis hold your breath… Sorry couldn’t resist… It would however lessen our dependants on foreign oil so I am for it…
The earths temp has always been changing and will always do so… i.e…. Past oceans are now deserts. Lets suppose you are sitting on your coach and your house began getting to warm. Would you sit there and swear that there was to much CO2 warming the house? No, you would get up and walk to the thermostat and turn down the heat! Why would you do that? Because it is your furnace heating your home… Guess what, we get our heat from the sun, the solar cycles match our past hot and cool stages… Hmmmm… Sounds logical to me… Hotter sun = Warmer Earth…
That makes as much sense as a “scientist†telling half the truth or declaring worst case scenarios to recieve his grants… Many are just trying to collect thier paycheck and look for “science†to justify thier existence while ignoring conflicting facts to thier belief system…
That being said you may have a valid point about CO2 holding in the heat. The solution then would be to plant more trees, or let nature take its course and let the plants catch up with our CO2 output… Unless all that shade led to global cooling…
PS; CO2(Carbon Dioxide, the global warming gas) is also used for carbonation in soda so fear the poison, and please consider holding your breath…
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:47 am“nanny_govt_sucks,” I can only assume you are paid to do what it is you do; and that is go around to every website mentioning climate change and repeat what you have said and have had disproven on other sites. It’s getting old already. Find a new job.
December 7th, 2006 at 7:36 pmOh, and just for you Tom (comment #155):
1. Referring to your opponents as “nazis” is juvenile in the extreme.
2. Yes, there is a carbon cycle. And you would make a lousy accountant. Burning fossil fuels adds more carbon in the carbon cycle than was originally there. This is, as you say, first grade stuff.
3. Weather changes. Climate has trends. Moreover, the climate has been remarkably stable for about the last 10,000 years, making agriculture, and thus civilisation possible.
4. Regarding sun intensity, the sun is about 25% more intense now than during the age of the dinosaurs when the Earth was much hotter (and had more CO2 in the atmosphere). The “solar intensity argument is a debunked one that was first put forward by a woman who was on the payroll of the oil companies.
Furthermore Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos (http://www.pmodwrc.ch/pmod.php?topic=tsi/composite/SolarConstant) show us that ther has been no increase in solar irradiance from 1978 onward when they started monitoring.
5. You cannot plant enough trees to uptake all the additional carbon in the atmosphere. The old argument (over 100 years old) was that the oceans would take up the CO2. Well, to an extent they are. And that is causing the formation of carbonic acid, which is killing off sea life.
And, trees have a moderating effect. They tend to warm cool air and cool warm air.
So, seeing as how every counter-argument you made was wrong, next time please consider holding your breath…
