Censoring Chicken Little Journalism?

Terrorism has two dimensions, the physical act and the emotional impact. The physical act often, if not always is actually less momentous compared to the lasting emotional aftermath of any one terrorist attack.

That is the purpose of terrorism, to keep the public terrified in order to gain leverage. Their leverage can only be empowered by communicating the message and marketing their product which is “fear”. Unfortunately the news media reluctantly feeds into their marketing strategy by relentlessly giving top billing to the Terrorist, this includes examining every aspect of even failed attempts of terrorism.

Chicken Little Journalism may be good for ratings, but it’s also the primary communication channel which the terrorist depend on to spread their message. Freedom of the Press and transparency indisputably helps develop a healthy society, but is the news media crossing the line from journalism to sensationalism? Moreover is this feverish urge to compete for top ratings building a healthy society; or is it reluctantly mass marketing terrorism and destabilizing society?

Could the journalists stop even if they wanted to, or are they unwilling pitch men for the terrorist simply because it’s exciting news and it satisfies a market need? The news media seems compelled to pander to our action-junky culture which has evolved from an entertainment industry fixated on taking the movie thriller to the next level. The market almost demands that the news media now has to satisfy our entertainment fix as well as inform us with the news; otherwise we’ll change the channel. The irony is this stuff is real and not entertainment, a line which is increasingly becoming more blurred. We are now almost giddy when there is another elevated alert level or an attack and we’re not even sure why. In one way we are entertained by it, in another way we are horrified by it, but we keep coming back and even surfing for it. Like a car wreck we can’t resist the urge to look. We complain about the news, we say we are not going to watch or read the news, but we do. We can’t help it, we feed into to the thrill because its human nature, and the media responds to satisfy our bulimic craving for excitement. Some offer restraints, others exceed any level-headed limit of responsible journalism. Regardless, the problem is clear, this cycle is feeding into terrorism, and the terrorist bank on that characteristic of human nature, and the economics that drive the media to compete for top ratings. If we truly wish to minimize the terrorist effect we need to address the emotional aftermath aspect of terrorism, and resist the urge to make it a source of entertainment and daily headline news.

The news media has given Bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi over 100 million dollars worth of advertising and branded their names as iconic outlaws forever. Despite the fact that most of us loathe them as terrorist, many young Muslims see them as role models and undertake their extremist ideals. Groups of want-a-be terrorist are forming within North America and elsewhere with absolutely no contact with al-Qaeda except what they’ve seen in the media. Adolescent Muslims struggling with their identity revere Bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as iconic heroes like young gun slingers worshipping Billy the Kid.

I’m not suggesting we ostracize ourselves from Terrorism, we need to be informed, we need to be vigilant, we want and need Freedom of the Press; but we also need to shift our focus for the health of our society. Moreover we need to start weakening the impact of terrorism instead of spreading it……. But will we do this on our own? And can the news media show restraint? We might, they might, but I doubt it. It’s a complicated cycle to break; it is human nature and economics tied in a conundrum. Unchecked ultimately in time we might become numb to a macabre news media which will just dissolve into our routine of life. But allowing this paradigm to evolve may also be taking a giant step backwards in the pursuit to co-exist in a more civilized and peaceful society. Terrorism erodes away at the psyche, it cultivates resentment and hate and promotes retaliation, and this becomes a horrific almost inescapable cycle which turns into a way of life. We’ve witnessed this in societies today and throughout the history of time, we don’t like it, and none of us want to live it.

So are there any other solutions, and are we any smarter than the rest?…..maybe…. but you’re probably not going to like this either. As much as I despise the word censorship, it might actually be worth considering. Not to totally ban the news on terrorism, but to get it off the front page and as a headline story. A federal censorship ban on Terrorism, with the goal to minimize the emotional aftermath of terrorism. A goal designed to handicap the communication channel for terrorist to market their product of ‘Fear” through the news media. A Federal Anti-Terrorist Censorship Ban carefully designed to mitigate the impact of terrorism, yet protect the freedom of the Press. A ban that allows the media to report news on terrorism, but not to headline the story or sensationalize the details. A ban not unlike other media bands we’ve lived with in isolated incidents, but a larger more permanent ban specifically on Terrorism. Because terrorism manipulates the news media with the intent of weakening our society, and all other news just happens…..Crazy? Maybe! …but so was anti smoking legislation 25 years ago, and we are all healthier as a result.

People with responsability are taught to be deliberate — i.e. not “shoot from the hip”. For example nuclear power plant operators are trained not to DO anything in the first half hour after the alarm sounds; just look and try to figure out what’s really going on. People in charge of people are also supposed to avoid causing panic.

You did not answer my question regarding the conspiracy: how come NO ONE has come forward to admit their part in it, or leaked evidence of the plot to the press? The most closely held activities of the Bushies are all over the pages of the NYT and the WSJ these days, because someone in their Admin doesn’t like what they are seeing. Where is the leak on what “really” happened on 9/11? MoveOn.org offered a $50,000 reward to anyone who could document George Bush serving in the Alabama Air National Guard–and after five years, no one has come forward. No confirmation means no fact. George did NOT serve in the Alabama Air Guard, and the Towers and the Pentagon were brought down by Islamofascists in airplanes, not nefarious government agents planting explosives.

Occam’s Razor says what must be the case: when something unexplained happens, the simplest explanation is usually the right one. Were NeoCon henchmen involved in planting explosives in the Towers to bring them straight down, or did they pancake straight down because the designers assumed that any blow from an airplane would be a glancing blow (as a pilot would try to AVOID the buildings, even if they reared up out of a fog), and they never conceived of a terrorist flying a 767 fully loaded with fuel straight into the core, creating a fire that melted the steel supporting the floors above? And what of the videos? Three videos showed three planes hitting three buildings. Were the 9/11 hijackers really government agents? Unlikely. REALLY unlikely. The simplest explanation is that the hijackers were who they said they were…Muslim fundamentalists who had a problem with US forces being in the homeland of Mohammed.

Why did Bush stay in the classroom reading “My Pet Goat?” Simple. His staff and the SS have orders to not make him look dumb. Andy Card wrongly assumed that telling the President, “We are under attack!” would move him to action; that he would get up, say something appropriate to the kids, and leave the room into the safety of his Detail, to be whisked away and hide at two different air force bases while Dick ran the show from an “undisclosed location.” Unfortunately for Mr. Card, the President did not have a cue card or TelePrompTer to give him this direction, so he sat there looking shocked and stupid for seven minutes until someone else figured out how to get him out of the room.

And if your theory is true, how do you explain the Pentagon? One section of wall came down, the width of a jet body. If your theory is true, then charges would have been placed in the basement to bring down the whole face of the building. And then there’s that pesky video showing a plane impacting on the side of the building. A forgery made in a secret government lab? Occam’s Razor says no.

As to moving the debris of the Towers, when that activity began, the hope was that they would find some people still alive. That hope necessitated the removal of debris to another site. And if you really wanted to do extensive forensic tests at the landfill, you still can. Will you find traces of C4? Unlikely. There really is no need, since the video showing two planes crashing into two towers is already in the public domain.

And as to those Muslim Fundamentalists, led by Osama, Georgie has given them everything they wanted. Our troops are out of the Holy Kingdom, and now reside in Kuwait and Iraq. And they have a ground war that is bogging us down to the point that the American population will demand the withdrawal of our troops. AND our economy is wrecked, what with continued tax cuts for the wealthiest 1% AND all the new Federal programs AND a war whose cheerleader (Wolfowitz) said would only cost us a billion five and is now moving rapidly toward a trillion.

Meanwhile, what is the Administration working on? An anti-gay marriage Amendment and an anti-flag burning Amendment. I wonder how many flags will be desecrated if the North Koreans nuke us? Or how many of the 3000 illegals who came across our southern border today want to participate in a gay marriage?

No steel-framed buildings had ever collapsed – in their own footprints – prior to that day. And the Towers WERE designed for a direct hit from a Boeing 707 loaded with Avjet A (not Avgas 80, 100 or 120). And why the big hurry to haul away EVIDENCE from the crime scenes – in blatant violation of both state and federal laws – before proper investigations could be mounted? The inside job theory is not just my opinion, but that of former Reagan cabinet member Paul Craig Roberts and BYU physics professor Steven Jones (among others).
Whenever any event like this occurs I ask myself “Who Benefits?” Who has the means, motive and opportunity to carry out such an event? I feel that the stakes have become so high that we must think “outside the box”, as they say. Is it so inconceivable to think that our government may’ve very well been co-opted by a cabal of extremely wealthy plutocrats who are using America as their Blunt Instrument to carry out their will to pursue an agenda completely at odds with most of it’s citizenry and to use and even manufacture events to justify the execution of a game plan that would otherwise be unacceptable to its people? Look at the Reichstag Fire in 1933, not to mention Project Shad. As for “Al Qaida”, perhaps that should be Al CIA-da. Check out Project Northwoods and Gladio… I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that there are many, many suspicious indications of government involvement and complicity in the tragic events of that terrible day. As for Coulter, she is a paid shill for the Neo Conservative Project For A New American Century crowd/agenda; a tawdry, ostentatious sideshow to distract us all from the very real efforts to embroil the entire world in conflict, fear, terror and bloodshed. America is dying and we had better realize it yesterday.
