Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh asserted that “the American left” and “the drive-by media” is happy about allegations of misconduct against civilians by U.S. troops at Haditha. Moreover, they planned on using Haditha to “gang rape” supporters of the war to undermine U.S. efforts in Iraq:
This Haditha story, this Haditha incident, whatever, this is it folks, this is the final big push on behalf of the Democratic Party, the American left, and the Drive-By Media to destroy our effort to win the war in Iraq. That’s what Haditha represents — and they are going about it gleefully. They are ecstatic about it… Folks, let me just put it in graphic terms. It is going to be a gang rape. There is going to be a gang rape by the Democratic Party, the American left and the Drive-By Media, to finally take us out in the war against Iraq. Make no bones about it.
Actually, taking the allegations seriously is essential to our success in creating a secure and democratic Iraq. The Iraqi people need to know the truth, which is that the alleged conduct is not tolerated in the United States military or in American society. It requires a thorough investigation by the United States government, thorough coverage by the United States media, and appropriate outrage by the American public, left, right, and center.
Anything less does a disservice to all the troops in Iraq who have held themselves to highest ethical standards under extreme pressure.

If anyone should be reporting all the good news stories, it should be that mouthpiece of the Bush administration, Fox News. As for my observation, from March 26 through May 22 (about 9 weeks) I checked Foxnews.com 13 times…once or twice per week. The only “good” story I found was on that last day, when Iraq inaugurated its new cabinet.
Where are all the good stories, Mighty? Fox news should be leading the charge, don’t you think? In a recent interview, one of the troops involved with bringing Baby Noor from Iraq to the U.S. for a life saving operation said that there were “thousands” of similar good news stories in Iraq. Where are they?

I’ve flipped through all the cable news channels and, I’ve got to say, they all come off as conservative to me (With the exception of Comedy Central). I’ve turned on the AM radio, and there are two Rush Limbaugh broadcasts for every “liberal, drive-by media” broadcast. The Republicans have a majority in all three branches of government, despite the fact that Bush thinks the Judicial branch is out to get him, and still they whine that the media is picking on them. If they want more “good news” reported, how about using the power they have amassed in the executive and legislative branches to make some good news? Average Joe may or may not get fired up about Gay Marriage, but I will guarantee that if a real Energy Policy is developed that reduces dependence on foreign oil and lowers fuel costs, the Average Joe will sit up and take notice. Americans talk about social issues but still vote on their pocketbook. That the Republicans don’t realize this and instead fritter away their short-lived triple crown on talking point issues baffles me. That’s fine with me, I’m more than happy to let them keep falling on their faces. I just hope someone, Democrat, Independent, whatever, takes note and starts to put together a platform of actual issues with a basis in facts. That would be a welcome change.

Faux News continually derides the press for only showing the bombings, and killings etc… (even while showing the same stories themselves). Now that Haditha is a story Faux News is deriding the press for not covering the bombings and killings and only focusing on the murders in haditha.
This weekend my brother in law met a really to goodness Iraq War vet for the first time. My in law is a Bush can do no wrong kind of guy. So he gets the vet cornered asking him questions about what’s happening over there. The vet talks about getting shot at every day he was there, having vehicles blown up from under him etc… (He was there in 2004 - 2005). Anyhow after hearing that the vet was shot at every day during his deployment my brother in law asked if things were as bad as the press makes them out to be. (He only watches Faux and listens to all the ideologically pure radio programs, so that is where he gets news, no print media whatsoever so the press he listens to shows only the bad stuff apparently) The vet responded no they are not, even though he has been home more than a year. Even though the vet talked about getting shot every day at and having vehicles blown out from under him, the one thing my brother in law took away from the conversation was that things are not so bad over there. I highly encourage right wingers to plan their Babylonian vacations for the summer if they feel that way.

But honestly, I think the picture that depicts what the United States soldier should be about is the one taken during the Vietnam War of a black soldier feeding a Viet Namese child (LIFE or LOOK magzine…do you remember?). I wish I had copy of this picture. The man sees the child as a human child (who is hungry) and embodies the humanity and compassion that all of us should. This is what our emissaries should represent; it is an ideal to strive for.
All the anvilhead bigotry in the world shall not take the humanity out of our soldiers. Compassion will survive all of this aggression and attrocity. It must.

THE British public has become increasingly cool towards American policy and critical of its role in the world after the sustained violence in Iraq.
A Populus opinion poll in The Times indicates that fewer than half the public believe that America is a force for good in the world, and nearly two thirds believe that Britain’s future lies more with Europe than with the US.
There is also evidence of a longer-term shift in views about the US. However, while President Bush and his Administration remain unpopular in Britain, Americans as a people remain popular.
The poll was undertaken between last Friday and Sunday, when there were several news reports about a high level of killing in Iraq, and particularly in Basra, the main area of operation for British forces.
There has been a marked fall in the number of voters who say that British troops should stay in Iraq for as long as it takes to make sure that the country is a stable democracy, to 32 per cent, from 38 per cent in February and 49 per cent in October 2004. By contrast, 58 per cent believe that British troops should be “withdrawn from Iraq as soon as possible, even if Iraq is not completely stableâ€. Although this is slightly down from 62 per cent in February, it compares with 42 per cent in October 2004. With don’t knows at 10 per cent, there is a big margin in favour of early withdrawal, particularly among women, unskilled workers rather than professionals and managers, older rather than younger voters and Liberal Democrats rather than Labour supporters.
This shift in opinion on Iraq has also been reflected in views about the US. Fewer than three fifths (58 per cent) believe that it is important for “Britain’s long-term security that we have a close and special relationship with the USâ€. This compares with 71 per cent as recently as two months ago. Fewer than half of Lib Dem voters (46 per cent) now agree.
Slightly less than two thirds (65 per cent) believe that “Britain’s future lies more with Europe than Americaâ€. In March 2003, before the invasion, about 71 per cent believed that “the conduct of the US towards Iraq makes it more important than ever that Britain is at the heart of Europeâ€.
Equally striking is that Britons are evenly divided (44 to 45 per cent) about whether “America is a force for good in the worldâ€. This reveals the extent of the cooling in attitudes towards the policies of the US Government. There is a clear gender divide: 48 per cent of men agree; 39 per cent of women do so. Positive views of America’s role in the world are highest among professionals and managers, at
49 per cent, and Tory voters, at 56 per cent; they are the lowest among Lib Dems, at 33 per cent.
Moreover, more than three fifths of British voters (62 per cent) believe that “if Gordon Brown takes over as Prime Minister, he should be much less close to President Bush than Tony Blair has beenâ€. Significantly, this is the view of 65 per cent of Labour voters.
However, earlier analysis by Professor Sir Robert Worcester, of Ipsos/MORI, highlights the distinction between attitudes towards the policies of the US Administration and the country and its people. Consequently, more than two thirds of British voters say that they like Americans and would like to go on holiday in the US.

I think it’s what he’d like to believe, regardless of the truth.
I’m not saying he’s correct or incorrect. But how can one profess “the other side’s motives” when you have absolutely NO INTEREST in their motives?
