“I don’t believe there’s any issue that’s more important

than this one.” — Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. The measure got 49 votes in the Senate, far short of the 2/3 required.

Please, somebody, hand this statement over to the troops in Bahgdad and Fallujah. Make sure they see the “R” next to his name.

  2. dlet says:

An amendment that restricts the rights of the citizens is the most important thing he can think of. This is a Republican at it’s finest.

  3. AboveTheClouds says:

At lest we got to find out there are no gay or divorced folk in one Oklahoma Senator’s family tree. This must be the most important thing we can think of.

Then maybe he ought to start questioning the rest of his beliefs, since he’s so wrong on this one!

Call his office ,then write a letter to the editor in your hometown newspapers.

If we all do this and use his words, they will come back to haunt the republicans this fall.

  9. JP says:

Why is Dobson so obsessed with Homosexuality?

From his website and these are his words:

“Meanwhile, the boy’s father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son’s maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger.”

If you can stomach the rest of this s**t, it’s important to send this to anyone who believes this c********r!!!

Reid: Federal Marriage Amendment Will Not Address America’s Pressing Needs

In spite of the many serious problems we have just discussed, what is the United States Senate going to debate this week?

    A new energy policy? NO.

Will we debate the raging war in Iraq? NO.

Will we address our staggering national debt? NO.

Will we address the seriousness of global warming –- NO.

Will we address the aging of America? NO.

Will we address America’s education dilemma? NO.

Will we address rising crime statistics? NO.

Will we debate our country’s trade imbalance? NO.

Will we debate Stem Cell Research? NO.

But what we will spend most of the week on is a constitutional amendment that will fail by a large margin, a constitutional amendment on Same Sex Marriage — an effort that failed to pick up a simple majority, when we recently voted on it. Remember, an Amendment to our Constitution requires 67 votes.

Why would we be asked to change this American masterpiece?

Will it next be to constitutionally dictate the cause of divorce, or military service, or even what America’s religion must be?

So for me it is clear the reason for this debate is to divide our society, to pit one against another. This is another one of the President’s efforts to frighten, to distort, to distract, and to confuse America. It is this Administration’s way of avoiding the tough, real problems that American citizens are confronted with each and every day:

    High Gas Prices.

    The War in Iraq.

    The National Debt.

    Health Care.

    Senior Citizens.

    Education.

    Crime.

    Trade Policy.

    Stem Cell Research.

Each issue begging the President’s attention, each issue being ignored — valuable time in the Senate spent on an issue that today is without hope of passing.

These issues are not Democratic issues. These issues are not Republican issues. There must be bipartisan efforts to address America’s ills.

Obviously harry reid disagrees with the good senator from louisiana..and harry did not even mention the major problem facing a large sector of the constitutents of Louisiana…the aftermath of katrina which seems to be the problem they woulkd want their representatives focused on.

  15. ed says:

David Vitter is a complete ass. With all the trouble Louisiana is enduring, and will probably endure for decades, he is going to worry his pretty head about protecting my marriage. How thoughtful of him. You would think a reasonable person would find out why the most populous city in his state has no one living in it, and how he can, as a United States Senator, can make it so people will return to his state’s most populous city. Does anyone doubt that this is a snapshot of how Louisiana, and our nation, has gotten so screwed up?

Recent William Fisher column on this subject.

    http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/printer_060506A.shtml

I disagree with Mr. Fisher. He says this is the first amendment to restrict freedom. Prohibition was also just such an amendment. And, we all see how well that turned out. People quit drinking alcohol because it was against the law. Just like this amendment will make gay people straight. Sure.

  16. Dan says:

    Turdblossom proof #1

Someone may want to inform this redneck xenophobe the (mis)statement is “think” not “believe”

Belief can be understood as a state of mind in the process of increasing understanding that is sometimes called deduction. As people develop structures of understandings from their observed or learned facts (generally accepted truths), they create a theory that is not unlike a bridge, sitting on those pillars of facts. What are the statistical facts on this subject Mr. Vitter? er…uh….lets change the subject.

Whereas Thought or thinking is a mental process which allows beings to model the world, and so to deal with it effectively according to their goals, plans, ends and desires.

But why parse words where in GOP facts are subjective.

  20. Dan says:

Not that this alters in any way the idiocy of the amendment or James Dobson’s dubious family values, but the amendment itself didn’t fail because it didn’t even get the chance to get an up-or-down vote: it failed to gain cloture, which requires 60 votes.

  21. Willy says:

How did anyone so stupid ever get elected to the Senate?

  22. Morris says:

  24. whereuat? says:

The 49-48 vote yesterday is far from a win for us when the result was already determined. These bigots understand that a perceived loss will bring out the bigot masses to vote Republican to maintain the status quo. In 2004, the GOP gained four senate seats AFTER getting one less vote than they got this year. In Alabama, a statewide constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage easily passed while a county amendment to allow Sunday liquor sales also passed. Does that seem backwards to anyone else? Got to love it.

  25. Pinky says:

As usual, the Republicans all got the memo with the subject line “We’re losing steam. It’s time to bash the gays again.” This is the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE of the day? This insanity needs to stop now.

Oh My God! Them thar homer-sexuals are-a cummin! Hide the children and lock yore doors!!

#25 – Actually, the best news is that they didn’t get the 50 votes they were oh-so confident they would have. All it’s goin gto take is about 15 more years for the oldest members in the House & Senate to die off, and this kind of political stunt will go the way of fiscally responsible Republicans: dead and gone.

  27. DieNowForPeace says:

“Curiously”, but consistently, not a peep from the trolls on this topic.

  28. Briseadh na Faire says:

I posted this earlier, but it’s more appropriate on this thread:

The Senate this morning is debating a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, even though supporters concede the measure doesn’t have enough votes to win. “I don’t believe there’s any issue that’s more important than this one,” said Republican Sen. David Vitter.

Yup. That’s right. More important than the War in Iraq, more important that the U.S. torturing people, more important than the President’s signing statements indicating that he does not feel bound to faithfully uphold the law, more important than war crimes, more important than rebuilding areas still devastated by last year’s hurricane Katrina, more important than solving the health care crisis in this country, more important than the government’s spying on its own citizens, more important than balancing the federal budget, more important than giving more tax breaks to the super wealthy, more important than global warming, more important than addressing the issue of full employment for all, more important than IMPEACHING THE ENTIRE ADMINISTRATION.

I could go on, but I’m late for work.

  29. Deb says:

I was so sorry to see that Robert Byrd voted in favor of this misguided amendment. I know he’s from WV, but I thought he had more sense than this….

  30. Dan says:

I’m not sure where Byrd stands with respect to the amendment itself, but again, this was a cloture vote – a procedural vote to end debate and proceed to a vote on the amendment itself. He was on the wrong side, no doubt, but it’s not quite accurate to portray him as having voted for the amendment.

  31. Godfry Daniel says:

    Badaboom. Right between the eyes.

  32. Lesly says:

49 votes in favor of banning gay marriage may fall short of the 2/3 majority needed, but it’s still 30 votes too many in support of it.

  35. WC says:

I just read an article against same sex marriages in the Opinion section of our local paper by a guest columnist (local boy). A few days ago a weekly columnist (a local gal) wrote in support of this issue (I didn’t get to read it because I don’t subscribe to the paper). In today’s article, the author tries to debunk the “myths” contained in the first article.

I’m just going to hit on a few parts of his column, and welcome discussion on this.

First of all, he references the Netherlands and Scandanavia as source countries when talking about the lives and actions of homosexuals, but never the U.S.

Next, I want to focus on 2 “myths” as he calls it, and how he responds:

Myth 1: Same sex marriage does not affect our everyday lives.

He tries to debunk this by referring readers to 2 Peter 2:4-9 in the Bible. That’s it; he gives no other argument. I read the passages (King James version) and, gosh, just don’t see where he is going with it. But I did read verses 1-3 which I assume go with 4-9, and don’t see any reference to homosexuals or unions of the same sex. I do see a reference to false prophets, which I equate more with James Dobson and Pat Robertson than I do gays. As many of you probably know, the religious types just love to cherry-pick verses from the Bible when it suits their argument, whether or not they have anything to do with the subject.

Myth 2: Same sex marriage will not harm conventional marriages any more than divorce has.

He refers to marriage in Scandanavia (the first country, he states, that legalized same-sex marriage) and says that same-sex marriage is helping destroy traditional marriage. He says that before gay marriage, couples would get married after the birth of one child. Now, however, same-sex marriage is helping further the idea that marriage and childbirth are separate subjects…as a result, couples are waiting until after the birth of their second child before getting married. He foresees further damage of traditional marriage to the point that couples will skip marriage altogether.

    Have fun.

  37. mcr says:

The vote was for cloture, not the amendment. Sen. Byrd voted for cloture but is opposed to the amendment. Personally, I think the democrats should have voted for cloture and made all these bigots go on the record with their official vote. Then, we could have seen if the Pukes were really in favor of amending the Constitution to include discrimination.

Your son has to be terrified of the adult male genitalia. For the rest of his life, he has to shake with fear at the mere thought of being exposed to another man’s penis.

That’s going to make public bathrooms and male locker rooms pretty much off limits. Your son, in his fear of male genitalia, will grow up obese from lack of exercise and develop kidney problems from holding it in, but damn, he won’t be gay from being exposed to another man’s penis. Where do these people come up with this crap?

  42. Mesell Malkintent says:

    How about 21billion missing dollars?
And a Signing Statement to hide the Corruption?

Is that a BIG ENOUGH ISSUE?

When the Boston Globe, this past April, broke the story that President Bush has been quietly setting aside over 750 acts passed by Congress, claiming he has the authority as “unitary executive” and as commander in chief to ignore such laws, it turned out that one of the laws the president chose to ignore was the one establishing the special inspector general post for Iraq. What the president did was write a so-called “signing statement” on the side (unpublicized of course), saying that the new inspector general would have no authority to investigate any contracts or corruption issues involving the Pentagon.

  45. Tommy says:

Gay marriage, or the lack there of, is one of the most important issues facing the US today.

Gay marriage rocks this country to the core, just not in the way that the Republican Party would like us to believe that it does. The core of this country is the constitution, and the rights it grants. When a person or group of people are being singled out and denied equality it goes against everything this country is about.

The MSM is an abysmal failure in reporting substantive news, and even worse than that in interviewing newsmakers.

Vitter, get a clue. The majority of americans could give a half-crap about gay marriage. Repubs have no agenda, have no plans, have nothing to offer the american people but hate, propaganda and lies. They’ve run this country into the ground.

  53. Jay Randal says:

Vitter is a complete nutcase, but Sen. Mary Landrieu is almost as clueless as him! She praised FEMA and Bush as hundreds drowned in New Orleans after the levees failed! Now Gov. Blanco outlaws abortions in Louisiana which will impact the poor the most!
