House and Senate negotiators have neared a compromise to finally pass the supplemental spending bill, which will provide more than $70 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan. “After the talks broke early yesterday morning, lawmakers came back to prepare a new fiscal 2007 Pentagon budget that includes another $50 billion in emergency funding, largely for Iraq operations. The cumulative U.S. investment in Iraq is now approaching $370 billion; more striking is the rapid escalation in the pace of monthly expenditures.”
Hey, when are we gettin’ all that oil that’s supposed to pay for all of this?
June 8th, 2006 at 4:21 pm“…more striking is the rapid escalation in the pace of monthly expenditures.†– - Ahhh, so that explains how they finally got Zarqawi. They just weren’t throwing enough dollars around.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:22 pmWe could have just paid Saddam 1 billion to leave voluntarily.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:22 pmto my corrupt, criminal and idiotic congress people;
no.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:26 pm$370 billion. Wow. That’s getting to be real money, ain’t it?
Ah, I remember the good ol’ days, when Larry Lindsey (President Bush’s own economic adviser) was mocked by the WH for estimating that it might cost $200 billion.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:34 pmIt’ll be half a trillion. And Bush will get another thousand soldiers killed. But hey we’ll win something in Iraq and complete the mission whatever that might be.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:35 pmYeah, I thought the oil revenues were s’posed ta pay for this shindig. Did Bushie lie to us?
June 8th, 2006 at 4:37 pmmore striking is the rapid escalation in the pace of monthly expenditures.â€
So when to we get to see the new water treatment plants, sewage plants, electric grid, hospitals, ploice stations, Iraqi Army, highways, oil infrastructure, etc. They must be keeping it under wraps for a big suprise just before the elections. I can’t wait to see it. Bet there is a Disney Iraq just north, south, east or west of Baghdad too.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:37 pmI remember the 2004 presidentail debates when Kerry was mocked for saying the war in Iraq cost $200 billion.
We got a real bunch of brain surgeons in the heartland deciding our elections, don’t we?
June 8th, 2006 at 4:37 pmBush and this Congress want to keep Carthagean Peace… forever war until we are totally wasted both financially and physically. If this continues there will be nothing left of our nation. Better learn Mandarin because that will be the national language.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:40 pmCongress should yank all Iraq money beforw the U.S.A. goes bankrupt and we cannot afford to bring our soldiers home.
Congress must do this because Bush has no idea of the damage he has done and is doing every day. For instance, Bush will probably feel like a fat cat over the death of Al-Zaqawi but the Bush cultivated terrorism is way past the Al-Zaqawi or even the Bin Ladin stage.
We owe it all to the ass-wipe of a thinker known as G.W. Bush.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:40 pmOh I see the Zarqawi thing is being used to coerce the Congress to pass more money for the Iraq fiasco occupation > Karl Rove knows how to dupe the Congress!
June 8th, 2006 at 4:43 pmThat’s an amazing amount of money and yet this nation cannot afford health care for all it’s citizens.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:44 pma billion here, a billion there…pretty soon we’re talking about some big money.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:46 pm#9 the heartland? How about the assland.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:48 pmWITH KILLS LIKE THE GREAT ZARQAWI KILL, IM HAPPY TO PAY THE BILL FOR THIS RIGHTEOUS WAR.
WHAT*SHOULD* WE WASTE THE MONEY ON ? THE POOR MINORITIES OF NEW ORLEANS, OR HEALTHCARE FOR ILLEGALS?
I HOPETHE ARMY BUYS MORE F-16S AND MORE BOMBS.
June 8th, 2006 at 4:50 pmAnyone else think ANVILHEAD must be Coulter’s retarded brother?
June 8th, 2006 at 4:56 pmI think Anvilhead is on to something. Next tax season, we could include a box that identifies your political party, then add a 50% tax to all republicans on top of the normal income tax, to pay for the Iraq war, and rebuilding. I wonder how many republicans we would have?
June 8th, 2006 at 4:58 pm#15
June 8th, 2006 at 5:00 pmHaving lived in Ohio for a while I can say that there was a generalized funk of voting against your own interest in the Heartland. Every time I hear the joke “why do they call it the Heartland….’cause there ain’t no brains there” it rings a little of truth. Not that everyone there is “duh” but it was more evident.
Dr. Sinker: “Anyone else think ANVILHEAD must be Coulter’s retarded brother?” – - It’s worse than that. I think A-Head is Coulter’s smart brother.
June 8th, 2006 at 5:01 pmBadmoodman – the thought that someone could be genetically tied to Coulter *and* smart is not reconilable with the evidence. He might be smarter than her, I’ll give you that, but the bar is not set high my friend!
June 8th, 2006 at 5:05 pmIraq only has 26,000,000 people.
We could have just given each man, woman, and child $15,000 and told them to fix their own country… no American deaths… no fighting.
June 8th, 2006 at 5:05 pmOf course I misspell reconcilable in a post about how “smart” someone is. Brilliant.
June 8th, 2006 at 5:08 pmI’m guessing 15 grand goes a long way in Baghdad these days. What’d we offer those poor folks who lost their family members in Haditha? A couple grand? Sheesh.
June 8th, 2006 at 5:10 pm#24 – That’s $60,000 for a family of four… probably enough to get you a nice home or enough to start a small business.
I’m sure the Iraqis would prefer the money over the bombing!
June 8th, 2006 at 5:20 pmANVIL is so pro war and death, but I do NOT see him in Iraq with a rifle in his hand! ASS-HEAD get your butt over to Iraq ASAP or shut-up!
June 8th, 2006 at 5:24 pmWe BETTER get all the oil for that kind of money.
June 8th, 2006 at 5:52 pmIt’s so nice to see that Dick(anvil)head is so into Christian values of peace on earth, goodwill toward men and Christian charity. Must be listening to the American Taliban(Falwell, Robertson, Dobson). He really values the 10 commandments(Thou shalt not kill/thous shalt not steal/thou shalt not covert thy neighbor’ …). Yep, a real sterling character. GO READ A BIBLE DICKHEAD!!!!!!! OR JOIN THE ARMY!!!!!!
June 8th, 2006 at 5:57 pmCould you imagine what we could do with 370 billion dollars?
Homelessness would no longer exsist.
Every person who wanted ot go to college would.
Hunger would be extinct.
Healthcare would be available to everyone.
Has anyone noticed the increase in murders this year?
Why are so many so angry?
Could it be because life has become a struggle which causes tempers to flair?
We need to get serious people. We must remove Bush and Cheney from the White House.
Removing Rove is a start but we’re only a third of the way along.
Do not vote for a Republcan no matter what. If you are faced with the choice of Leiberman or Biden get an independant on the ballot now.
June 8th, 2006 at 6:40 pmThis is for a person who posts under the name onthefense…
Earlier this morning he/she was using Nick Bergs death to support the glee he/she about Zarqawi”s death… I find it very disrespectful for anyone to use Nick Berg to show their support for Bubble Boy and the war in Iraq.
Here’s how Nicks father feels…
PHILADELPHIA - Michael Berg, whose son Nick was beheaded in Iraq in 2004, said on Thursday he felt no sense of relief at the killing of the al Qaeda leader in Iraq and blamed President Bush for his son’s death.
Asked what would give him satisfaction, Berg, an anti-war activist and candidate for U.S. Congress, said, “The end of the war and getting rid of George Bush.”
June 8th, 2006 at 6:49 pmMore for onthefense and others who think they can use Nick Berg.
Nicholas Berg’s father, a pacifist who is running for Delaware’s U.S. House seat on the Green Party ticket, said al-Zarqawi’s death is likely to foster anti-American resentment among al-Qaida members who feel they have nothing left to lose.
He dismissed the notion that al-Zarqawi’s death might bring him closure.
“First of all, I’m not even certain that al-Zarqawi even killed my son,” said Michael Berg, who doesn’t believe the videotape of his son’s execution or what he’s been told by the FBI any more than he believes conspiracy theories suggesting his son was killed by the U.S. government.
June 8th, 2006 at 7:00 pmAnyone see the picture of Zarqawi? He looks great, especially after being killed by 2 500 ton bombs. Hardly a scratch on his face. I thought they would be scraping his DNA off the pieces of rubble in order to identify him, but, NO, just one look at his face and you know it’s him. Somethings wrong with this picture. If you get the chance, cruise over to Crooks and Liars and take a peek for yourself.
June 8th, 2006 at 8:13 pmHo Chi Minh – happy to read that someone else recognizes the so called Christian right for what they really are – the American Taliban.
“Follow me to Carthage….don’t believe the headlines.” (The Mammals)
June 8th, 2006 at 8:20 pmBecause of the tax cuts for the rich, the money coming in is not equaling the money going out but Bush worry? Why should he, he can do what he did in Texas, saying its not my problem.
The deficits get bigger and bigger as each month goes by, dont they?
June 8th, 2006 at 8:23 pm#35 – We all know Bush always walks away from the messes he makes and lets someone else clean up after him.
June 8th, 2006 at 8:59 pmJust what in god’s name are they doing with all this money? Every month, another 50 billion??????? If our troops are still without some supplies, somebody is pocketing huge chucks of money here. Is someone following the money trail?
June 8th, 2006 at 11:42 pmPost 36 > billions are missing but nobody audits the Bush Regime on Iraq spending > actually it’s the perfect bank robbery of the entire nation, and they are getting away with it!
June 9th, 2006 at 12:01 amAs was pointed out on TV last night: Bush said the death of Al Zarqawi would be a turning point in the war — implicit in that assessment would be that the war is NOT going well and is in need of something to turn it around.
June 9th, 2006 at 9:11 amDidn’t his own words contradict what he has been saying for three years?
You know how the college bowl games have the sponsor’s name in the title such as: The Taco Bell Fiesta Bowl? We should do the same for the Iraq war. It should the: The Bondholders of the People’s Republic of China’s Iraq War.
June 9th, 2006 at 9:21 amThe administration and military defense strategy has the US in the middle east for the next 3,4 or 5 decades. Al Zarqawi is just a fraction of the real war that is being waged between ethnic groups as the police are even part of the torture and slaughter of people. I don’t believe that the US is willing to change this or is acting in good faith in any way whatsoever. There are not enough troops to secure the peace and this idiotic policy continues from both sides of the isle. Many Americans actually enjoy watching the slaughter of innocent people, the heaping up of DU killing and/or deforming unborns, and just enjoy watching the implosion of a country while the US is helping this happen in every way possible. The “leadership” of the US essentially has shot off the legs of the Iraqi people and are demanding that they walk. Bone head democrats don’t belive in fixing what they have voted to help break into pieces. Both republicans and democrats seem to enjoy the profittering that can come out of several decades of steeling money from the Iraqis and the US taxpayer.
The liars and their lies that got us into this mess know damn well that they are making the world less safe by providing training grounds in both Iraq and Afghanistan for terrorists. At one time, this problem might have been able to be confronted with a united effort to take out terrorist organizations which would require that a slaghterhouse training ground of war NOT be created. Now there is a proliferation of groups that is growing because of US and British policy. Terrorism used to be primarily the use of force to ensure a new colonialism using military bases and the military to enforce what is now known as the New World Order. Now, the New World Order is expanding their net in the name of GWOT to create a world wide military/police state for banks and corporations to do as they please.
Many are sick of the liars and the lies they pimp around the world for their own interest and their constituencies. IMO, There are four things that need to be done to reverse this situation and if anyone that really believes in freedom. People need to get ready to confront those that pretend to have hold on our best interests for our own good (our “representatives”).
1. Eliminate the federal reserve. These are private banks that were given power without the knowledge of the people of the US to take our wealth and print money while skimming off the top interest on the debt and charging for services. The Constitution states specifically that the US alone has the right to create money, NOT SOME PRIVATE GROUP OF BANKS that make up the Federal Reserve System.
2. Corporations are a non person. They are entities that are created by contract of the articles of incorporation and therefore are not real people and should have no rights as given to real people. This sham was created to allow those with power to use the weight of the corporations they run to influence the interests of the corporation over the interests of the people. Corporations are NOT citizens in any reasonable sense of the definition and act closer to that of sociopaths whose only interest is enriching their bottom line while expanding their power and influence. Asset Light business must also be exposed as means of creating value whithout work that is being performed by many “brand” companies.
3. Elimination of the National Security State created when the National Security Act was passed in 1947. This has led to foreign policy that is now waging wars on ideologies (any form of government that does not meet our needs to expand the new world order) and theologies (wars against Islamic extremism while ignoring other forms such as those within our own country). GWOT is not a war on terror but a war on liberties around the world for control and expansion of a corporate based empire along with standing armies among all nations (America’s new colonialism) to enforce adherence to corporatism and the faux free enterprise it stands for. Multinationals collude on a regular basis through CEO summits, the IMF, the World Trade Organization… There is no free trade, much less fair trade in any of this.
4. Elimination of the ties between the military and industry. War profiteering is big business that has now reached out into space with weapons that serve no function but to keep populations compliant to this New World Order that allows corporations to transend the bounds of sovereign state’s borders in order to take resources and wealth from nations as well as privatizing the most basic of needs such as water, air space and food.
June 9th, 2006 at 9:37 amWe could have just paid Saddam 1 billion to leave voluntarily.

yankeluh,
Who’d-a-thunk-it?
…this (Iraq spending and mass murder) is the perfect example of why…
…”C” students aren’t equipped to be president…
June 9th, 2006 at 12:54 pmAnyone see the picture of Zarqawi? He looks great, especially after being killed by 2 500 ton bombs. Hardly a scratch on his face. I thought they would be scraping his DNA off the pieces of rubble in order to identify him, but, NO, just one look at his face and you know it’s him.
Comment by follow me to Carthage #32
follow me,
Today, some media pundits began to remark about this…
…they asked WH press people what they had heard about Zarqawi’s (pristine) condition…
…questions like:
Q: “Was there any plastic surgery done?
A: No.
Q: Was there any airbrushing or touching up the photography?
A: No.
The scuttlebut now seems to be that Zarqawi was STILL ALIVE after the strike!
No sh*t – (2) 500 lb bombs…
…everyone else obliterated…
…but al Zarqawi comes out “looking” like a rose?
…hmmmm…
This suggests one of two things in my estimation…
1) Zarqawi had been captured, tortured and killed awhile ago, and they were holding on to him to produce at an opportune time…
or…
2) This is another smoke and mirrors production…
FOLKS we gotta rmember…
…hundreds of billions (maybe even a trillion) dollars…
…is STILL a lot of money…
June 9th, 2006 at 1:04 pmI read today 20 some billion dollars has been lost of the reconstruction money allocated to Iraq. 9 billion lost from oil revenues. NO checks and balances. I smell fascism.
