Major defeat for the religious right.

By Nico Pitney on Jun 8th, 2006 at 2:15 pm

Major defeat for the religious right.

The FDA has approved a vaccine to protect against a sexually-transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. (Cervical cancer affects over 10,000 women in the United States each year, killing more than 3,700 annually.) The vaccine was opposed by prominent religious right groups because they said it would be seen as a “license to engage in premarital sex.”

    But Viagra is fine?
    A$$holes!
    This will save LIVES.
That’s far more important than making sure grandpa’s got wood……

  3. kindness says:

The Religious Right only thinks sex is OK if you’re doing it Missonary & with the purpose of making babies.

They don’t like sex at all. it scares the Jesus out of ‘em.

With that in mind, why would any SANE person let them control the debate & the vaccines?

  4. trueblue says:

My dear, sweet, naive daughter -
Upon hearing me tell her she’s getting the vaccine when it becomes available, she looked a bit nervous and said, “They put it in your arm, right?”

    Too funny.

  5. Bearpaw says:

The vaccine was opposed by prominent religious right groups because they said it would be seen as a “license to engage in premarital sex.”

Evidently prominent religious groups think a license is necessary.

  6. Zookeeper says:

#4 – That is funny, trueblue. The religious right will want to know if your daughter has her “license” yet. Sickos.

  8. Daniel says:

This is a victory for women’s health and should be trumpeted as such. Frankly, this should never have had anything to do with religion or sex, and the left is not served by throwing this victory in the face of the right.

  9. trueblue says:

She’ll have to get the OK from Mom first, and that aint happening any time soon!

  10. jones says:

Condom’s are a shield for premarital orgies.

  11. Zookeeper says:

#9 – Ah, mom, the licensing board. ;)
My son is absolutely SHOCKED and MORTIFIED that I’m sending him to college this fall with a box of condoms. I told him if he starts getting busy, I don’t want him without the proper external equipment. He just about died when I tried to show him how to put one on — a banana, you weirdos.

  12. Zookeeper says:

    #10 – What about post-divorce orgies?

  13. trueblue says:

    Jones,
Is my sarcasm meter not working?
    You are kidding, right?

  14. trueblue says:

    #11,
How do you get Pepsi off a monitor / keyboard?

    Warn me next time! :)

  15. mark says:

I agree completely with Daniel. While this is a huge victory, it is a victory for women’s health. Framing the article otherwise is missing the point.

  16. Evil Spaniard says:

So, the religious right is planing a coup against the USA who would result in the dead of 3700 american citizens? War on those religious fanatics!

  17. trueblue says:

If there was a vaccine against prostate cancer, there’d be zero debate.

  18. Zookeeper says:

#15 – What’s wrong with the framing of the article? The religious right HAS had their panties in a wad over this — BIG TIME.

  19. Zookeeper says:

    #14 – Sorry. ;)

  20. Cyra Brown says:

If it wasn’t for the cancer preventing aspect of this vaccine, it would live in FDA limbo forever. But even the rigid moralists can’t justify that position, cancer is better than pre-marital sex. Yeah, tell it to your wife. She’ll understand. And why is it that girls are singled out for penalties, not boys, who are FAR more interested in pre-marital sex- heck any kind of sex!?! So typical of the hypocrites. So HOORAY for us!

  21. the Church Lady says:

Make-up promotes premarital sex, so does shaving legs and pitts, showering, perfume, body washes, bikini underware etc.

  22. G.I. says:

Had religious extremists managed to block this vaccine from coming to market, would it not have been more accurate to say that the thousands of victims yet to come would be dying more as religious sacrifices than as victims of cancer?

Instead, today is a good day for basic human decency, and a bad day for wannabe religious tyrants. On this day, at least, the aspiring theocrat will have to look elsewhere to slake her ungodly bloodthirst.

  23. kindness says:

Making fun of those who would keep this from other citizens because of the potential for additional sex is justified.

That isn’t “throwing it in their faces”, that is laughing in their faces. It’s important to let them know that they are the mutants in this land and we are the normals.

So, sorry Daniel & Mark. I don’t agree with your take on the matter.

  24. Evil Spaniard says:

#21 Yep, if you left all those pro-sex activities, sure you wouldn’t have sex. Well, you can try in the Ozarks.

  25. Wayne says:

If there was a vaccine against prostate cancer, there’d be zero debate.

    Comment by trueblue

    that is so true.
Why the religious right would oppose this is really baffling to me, makes no sense.
But then protesting at funerals of our war veterans, with signs calling them gay and thanking god for the bombs killing them makes no sense either

So where arethese orgies yallare talking about? /grin

  26. trueblue says:

#21 Yep, if you left all those pro-sex activities, sure you wouldn’t have sex. Well, you can try in the Ozarks.

Oh, so THAT’S why I haven’t had nookie in over 2 years!!!!!!

  27. Later On » Cervical cancer vaccine approved! says:

[...] At last! Via ThinkProgress, ABC News reports that the cervical cancer vaccine's been approved by the FDA. This is a major defeat for the Religious Right, which fought the vaccine bitterly (thinking that if cervical cancer is prevented, there's nothing to stop promiscuous sex). [...]

  28. sammy says:

#25 – the vaccine doesn’t target cervical cancer, precisely. It targets the human papilloma virus, or HPV. It just so happens that becoming infected with HPV also puts women at a much greater risk of cervical cancer.

It also happens that HPV is sexually transmitted. The reason the religious right opposed it was because it was thought that fear of contracting HPV (or cervical cancer) would be a deterrent to sexual intercourse. Pandagon did a good discussion of this fairly recently, but I don’t have a link handy.

In case you’re wondering: yes, this means that the religous right is willing to risk a bunch of women getting cervical cancer if it means that some of them go nookie free.

Hey, I never said they had a good reason.

  29. dlet says:

Religious Right Doctrine: Save the babies so we can ignore them in the future and let them die for our false beliefs and sins against humanity. Amen.

  30. LP says:

Sammy (28), I just want to clarify one little point. HPV is the direct cause of cervical cancer; eliminate HPV and you eliminate cervical cancer — at least that’s how I see it.

It must be noted, however, that this does not protect from all HPV — only about 70% or so.

I wrote more about this today

  31. trueblue says:

Scene: back seat of a station wagon. Windows fogged up. Two teens (one male, one female) are engaged in “heavy petting”
Boy: “C’mon, Baby. If you loved me, you would.”
Female: “I do love you,… but wait. I might contract the Human Pampaloma Virus. It will take some 20-30 years, but it could eventually give me cervical cancer. I’m sorry, I just can’t.” (Aside) “Thank you, Religious Right.”

  32. jspot » Blog Archive » Women’s Lives will take precedent over Religious Right Lobby says:

Better than Will Ferrell, I was thinking of our sweet Ian, from a couple threads back.

  38. Zookeeper says:

My daughter, because kids are kids, and the Hormones helped with her migraines [Eeek Migraines a license for sex!!] got Birth control when she turned 17.

    Mesell,

I did a parody of his “Personal Ad!”

  45. Zookeeper says:

#44 – That’s right, I’d forgotten the ad and the Vodka/CranRaspberry. Maybe I had too many…I had to get over Ian somehow!

    Stopping now… ;)

  50. cizzle says:

You know, this makes me wonder as i was watching penn & tellers bullshit last nite about abstinence advocates. Why do the religious rights care if we have sex out of wedlock? I mean, dont they need more babies produced so they can die in future wars for our “freedom”?

  51. SKdeA says:

Having had HPV, and having had to go through having my cervix frozen with liquid notrogen to kill the malformed cells… a horrible, painful experinece! I can only say, hurrah that we have a way to prevent the pain and suffering for 70% anyway!
And of course, what business is it of anyone else’s what I care to do with my body?

  52. Zookeeper says:

#51 – Other than being quite short-sighted, I think they just have to all up in everybody’s business — and not in a good way — so they don’t have to concentrate on what they themselves are doing.

  53. trueblue says:

    SKdeA,
    What do you mean “had”?
I thought HPV stayed with you for life.

  54. Zookeeper says:

And of course, what business is it of anyone else’s what I care to do with my body?
    Comment by SKdeA

    Yay!!
(Sorry you had to go through that, I’d heard it’s terrible)

  55. mark says:

#18, #23 – Maybe I’m idealistic, but I don’t like to think of every issue as a clash of interests between us and them. In a way, that trivializes what’s at stake. Framing this as a victory for women’s rights speaks to the significance of the issue. Framing this as a defeat for the religious right is gloating and childish at best. The real winners of this are not progressives but women.

  56. trueblue says:

    SKdeA,
Oops, I should have started with an “I’m sorry.”
Mean of me, considering I had a colposcopy, which was not fun.
(Shoot the cervix with vinegar and lop out any part that turns white.)

I’m sorry. My curiousity got the better of my manners.

  57. trueblue says:

    Mark,
Obviously you’ve never had your reproductive rights questioned.

  58. Zookeeper says:

    #56 – You’re a better man than I am — or ever will be.

  59. For Truth says:

That’s amazing that a vaccine for one particular form of illness that involves a womans cervix, is interpreted as a license to have more sex, Ok whatever, I won’t explain the difference, cuz I am all for any reason to have more sex.

  60. Zookeeper says:

    #60 – I knew there was a reason I liked you. ;)

  61. Zookeeper says:

Other than the fact you can probably look right into all of us and give a fairly accurate diagnosis, of course. Scary…

  62. For Truth says:

Don’t be afraid, I am probably the craziest one here.

  63. For Truth says:

    Alright, Santo takes it.

  64. Zookeeper says:

If you’re the craziest one here, I’m checking into State Hospital North tonight. The ex is in town for Zoo Jr’s graduation, so I could use a little getaway, actually.

Is it telling that I winced when I read the name Santo?

  65. trueblue says:

    Umm, Zoo,
you keep referencing a post behind, I think.
and BTW: I thought you knew I was a Female! Remember the male bashing thing?
(which I’m about to do in spades ’cause I’m so PISSED at what I just found out…)
Anyway, maybe my anger has clouded me, I don’t know, but your #58 post ref’s me…

I’m pouring myself a BIG ‘OL Vodka/Cranraspberry. Be right back…

  66. For Truth says:

    (Sorry. I’m being ornery!)

It was a charming word, I was trying to tone down what I was really thinking. I know the men are into the mechanical act itself, and women like the story depicting what all leads up to it. How about “make love”, “screw”, f*ck”, “drill”, “poke”, “bumpin’ uglies”.

I believe in using the proper terms for things, so if you’re making love, call it that; if you’re f*cking, well, sometimes you’re just f*cking.
Bumpin’ uglies? Hmmm, got that from the same department as the farmer’s blow?

  106. For Truth says:

Sorry If I’m getting too gutteral.

Uhumm…(clearing throat). Yes, I think women should be able to have access to any and all healthcare benefits. I heard from my Mom (that’ll shut this gutter down), that more research goes into men’s pattern baldness than all womens’ medicine combined.

  107. trueblue says:

NO! Zoo, She’s never even been kissed! Or out on a date.
Although she’s a size 3, beautiful curly shoulder length hair, big ‘ol blue eyes (the only thing I asked God for, besides her being healthy)
MAMA is a *wee bit* protective!

  108. For Truth says:

    #105, Zoo,

Now I’m thinking of the mom in “Throw Mama From the Train”!!!!

    Stop!
    We were havin’ fun!!!

  110. Zookeeper says:

Sorry, For Truth’s Mom! I, too, have heard that more money is spent on male pattern baldness than on women’s health concerns. I shall endeavor to mention it to the ex this evening, since he probably doesn’t know how much time, effort and money is being spent on his laughably obvious (to eveyone but him) problem. Good Evening, Mama For Truth.

Note to self: Tell ex about the above, do not, I repeat, do NOT call him a twat — again.

  118. troll says:

Once again the folks here at TP are full of crap. The article they linked to had this to say

“The Family Research Council, an organization that “promotes the Judeo-Christian world view as the basis for a just, free and stable society,” welcomes the news of such vaccines as Gardasil.”

So while some may have issues they certainly do not represent the totality of Christendom or even the right

  119. troll says:

Regardless of what one parent or even an organization had to say this is hardly a “Major defeat for the religious right.” There was practically no effort to oppose it. I know you libs are desperate for victory but making it up is pathetic.

  120. cats are flyfishn says:

The American Taliban leaders only think sex is ok when they are doing their adulteress behavior. Sex for anyone else is not ok unless you want to pro-create.

  121. cats are flyfishn says:

Once again, the American Taliban wants to control women’s bodies.

  122. cats are flyfishn says:

And one more thing… there is no such thing as the religious right. They are the American Taliban. The only difference between the Afgani Taliban and the American Taliban is the book that they worship. We all know they don’t follow the teachings, just worship the book.

  123. Ann Coulter says:

This is just another example of vile liberals using cancer as a shield from all criticism and trying to force more open sexual behavior into our childrens minds. Not only is this a violation of my first amendment rights this is also going to encourage sexual experimentation (which will probably lead to more homosexuality) and even sexual terrorism!

  124. For Truth says:

    That’s Gay Sexual Terrorism Ann.

  125. My Take on it ... says:

Why would someone in their right mind want to stop a vaccine that would stop a virus that causes cervical cancer? If they don’t believe in the medicine, then don’t use it. Quit pushing your views on others. Your views are not the majority in this country, that’s why this vaccine was approved for use. Thank you FDA.

  126. Jay Randal says:

Lol post 124 really does sound like Ann Coulter > is that you Ann the crossdresser guy who masquerades as a female?

  127. For Truth says:

I don’t think God is cruel, which is why God wouldn’t put extremely high concentrations of nerve endings in an area we are supposed to leave alone.

  128. For Truth says:

It’s hard to get yer chick in the mood when her cervical cancer is acting up.

  129. For Truth says:

    Yay.

Now how is it this country has come to the point we have to celebrate a government decision to improve the health and welfare of the citizens? Think of all the money saved on healthcare costs too.

  130. For Truth says:

Shouldn’t it be a given to have an available vaccine for cancer?

  131. Lora says:

Lol post 124 really does sound like Ann Coulter > is that you Ann the crossdresser guy who masquerades as a female?

    Comment by Jay Randal

    Jay,
#124 indeed sounds like Mr./Ms. Coulter, but I assume it’s a good parody, as the real Ann-thrax certainly wouldn’t make a comment for free.

  132. William says:

I don’t think this is a defeat for the religious right. it is a victory for medicine. Removing the apparent ill consequences of sex does not make immoral sex any less damaging. Immoral sex stimulates damaged emotional centers in their opposite. This does not stimulate healthy emotional response and exacerbates emotional injury with its opposite form.

  133. jericho says:

Sex…Good… Religious right ..Bad. And that’s all I have to say

  134. All Wrong » Medical breakthrough says:

[...] Everybody’s talking about Gardasil — the idea that vaccinating girls and women against the HPV virus might encourage them to be slutty. I’d like to point out, simply, that Motrin doesn’t encourage people to have migraines, that antibiotics don’t encourage people to get urinary tract infections (or syphilis, for that matter), and more directly, that Jonas Salk wasn’t hoping people could finally eat more shit when he created a vaccine for polio, just as Edward Jenner wasn’t looking for a revolution against covering our mouths when we cough when he developed a vaccine against smallpox. [...]

  135. For Truth says:

How about a vaccine that would lobotomize any religious right winger, and have no effect on everyone else?

  137. SKdeA says:

#53 (hey, no problem, I didn’t take offense!), yes, the virus (like any other virus) can lurk in your body forever, but I have been lucky enough not to have an outbreak of the icky genital warts it causes since then. But they check for the weird cells every year!
It was not a fun thing to go through, especially as a newlywed… years and years ago.
Hope eveyone has a lovely weekend!

A “farmer blow” is projectile blowing of the nose, without tissue, preferably outside.
    Comment by For Truth

Who thinks of that kind of thing!? Oh yeah — men. It’s in my brain forever, now, I hope you’re happy, For Truth. *gagging*

    Comment by Zookeeper — June 8, 2006 @ 6:21 pm
    EEEEWWWWW!!!

And I absolutely hate the urban equivalent, when you’re stopped at a trafiic light and the guy in front of you opens his door, leans out, and spits a huge loogey on the street…. grossout!

amazing how men and women are different isn’t it? And not all in the nice ways!

  139. Zookeeper says:

Thank you for that confirmation, SKdeA, although now I have a new picture in my brain forever. The idea of the “farmer blow” is still worse, though. I understand the concept of “better out than in,” but really, does it have to be public?

  140. the journeyman says:

    Talk about twisting words.
I went to the Family Research Council’s site to see what they actually said: http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=LH06B03,
“Media reports suggesting that the Family Research Council opposes all development or distribution of such vaccines are false.” So why does this lead story say otherwise? The Family Research Council’s caveat is, “Because parents have an inherent right to be the primary educator and decision maker regarding their children’s health, we would oppose any measures to legally require vaccination or to coerce parents into authorizing it.”

That is their real view, not this straw man that the “major defeat” author is spreading. Why he/she needs to deceive to advance his/her point is telling of the objective.
