Suicide: desperation or an act of war…?

so, for admiral harris, when the bank robber stands in front of the teller cage with a gun pointed to his own head, demanding all the money under the threat of killing himself, that would be an act of war…

They are smart. They are creative. They are committed. They have no regard for human life, neither ours nor their own. I believe this was not an act of desperation, but rather an act of asymmetrical warfare waged against us.

    — Rear Admiral Harry Harris, Commander, Joint Task Force Guantanamo

what drives human beings to take their own lives, whether it be through suicide bombing or just plain suicide, is desperation, fueled by a belief that nothing less could possibly make a difference…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  2. unbelievable Says:

We can probably tell you what you’ll be missing now…

From the conservative MSM: More of the same: Lies, Ad hominen attacks, smoke and mirrors diversions, more dead in Iraq, Bush studdering, verbal diarreah, blame, fear-mongering, and self-serving rhetoric…

    Have a nice flight!

  3. Jay Randal Says:

TP has missed the ongoing story of what really happened to the Zarqawi stooge! Apparently he was alive, not seriously wounded, so US Special Forces troops wrapped his head with a robe or blanket, then beat him to death > so claims an Iraqi witness to the event! This begs the question of WHY Bush wanted the phony bogeyman Zarqawi silenced and not taken alive?

    That’s on television news? Wow.

  5. the fly-man Says:

Does it matter or not that C-Span failed to identify Empty Wheel when she was on the panel with
Jane, Christy, Murray, Dan, Joe? Why do bloggers insist on anonymity while demanding reform, from REAL elected or appointed individuals? No legitimate newspaper will publish an editorial or story by an anonymous source why do the bloggers get special treatment? No rules? I just don’t get it. I firmly believe that this will come back to haunt the blogs when they try to legitimize themselves further on down the road when they will need all the credibility they can get. What if the founding fathers were anonymous? I care for the simple reason no anonymous person has ever been elected to Congress and transparency is the single biggest malaise plaguing this administration.Time to grow up and leave political fantasy island behimd.

  6. hadenough Says:

    fly-man,

“no anonymous person has ever been elected to Congress ”

What office is Empty Wheel running for?

  7. Jay Randal Says:

Post 4 > not so much on TV news networks yet, but reported in Washington Post and New York Times newspapers and on the news blogs as well!

The only reason I can imagine for Zarqawi to be silenced was to prevent him from spewing information on who he really was and worked for! His death was hoped by Bush to be an asset to his flagging poll numbers on Iraq, but if the full details come out that Zarqawi was simply murdered to shut him up, then this event has backfired on Bush and Karl Rove!

  8. beavercleaver Says:

Yes, two reports concerning YearlyKos that made the cerebrul media writers make me go “huh?”
A.P. writerm Ken Ritter with this little gem: “Responding to Reid’s remarks, the White House declined to address the senators proposal directly.” See anything anal in this remark? Please, if this is the kind of reporting that this big clam-bake will produce…please, don’t bother to bring it into the kitchen.

And, please don’t bother to bring back the “fair and balanced” crap–got enough of that: “Republican party spokesman Tucker Bounds characterized the convention as proof that sqeaky wheels, no matter how wobbly, get all the democrats’ oil.” We’ve just grown accustomed to getting facts and real investigative reporting here at T.P. and won’t accept this kind of MSM warmed-over media-acrity.

  9. the fly-man Says:

Hadenough, Empty Wheel is part of a major movement for reform, the heart of the progressive movement if you will, and when there is politics there is money involved, follow the money and there is the ticket. How can people associated with the LEADERSHIP of political movements possibly ask people on the fence, this is the real crutch, be conviniced to align themselves with a cartoon character style personification and not sincerely question their motives. It’s all about transparency.

  10. Stupid Republicans Says:

My local media reported this too. The Iraqi spoke on camera but did not want his face shown.

I guess some will say I’m a conspriacy theorist now for not believing Bubble boys latest lie. Don’t think I care for one minute what anyone thinks of me. We have been liied to about everything, including the events of 9-11.

  11. got censure? Says:

no anonymous person has ever been elected to Congress

The Federalist Papers were written anonymously by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay. That would be two presidents and one Chief Justice.

“In October 1787 New York newspapers began to run letters from an unidentified “Publius” urging voters of the state of New York to ratify the proposed Constitution of the United States.”

  12. the fly-man Says:

So in the 21st century we are still fearfull of repercutions from political opponents? This is exactly what will arm the political opposition. Nice try, so 2 President’s were on the ballot as anonymous?

  13. the fly-man Says:

THIS is transparency. The alternative is open to abuse and sure to become propaganda.
    http://www.kicktheoilhabit.org/
Doesn’t anyone get it, this anyonymous thing is a very slippery slope towards manipulation. Doesn’t any one care about the truth?

  14. Stupid Republicans Says:

How about the story that the House has introduced a bill that would reinstate the draft.

The bill can be found in the Library of Congress.

  15. hadenough Says:

    fly-man,

    “It’s all about transparency. ”

If you knew Empty Wheels real name would take everything she says at face value? Would you follower her off a cliff?

A name does not make a point or facts or opinion.

  16. unbelievable Says:

‘the fly-man’ is your real name? ;) To some degree the anonymity allows honesty. It also allows dishonesty. I don’t know. Would be nice if we truly had free speech, but we know better.

As for the Zarqawi news - I don’t know what to think. The Bush Regime has lied so frequently that it’s hard for me to dismiss the possibilty of foul play - especially at a time like this wen the Republican Party’s ratings are in the toilet. Normally, I’d be dismissive of this news - but with these corrput crooks in office anything is possible. And his face did look more like a bar fight than a bomb had killed him (shrapnel, large dents from flying debris that had knocked him unconsious or that sort). Just one witness isn’t enough to convince me at this point. And we can’t trust the autopsy. My guess is that we won’t know if it’s true until 25 years from now when one of the soldiers decides to come clean…

  17. garnethouse Says:

fly-man, go do some research about pamphleteering in the 1700s and if you still can’t see the logical analogy to what’s going on today with anonymous blogging and web sites, then you aren’t in touch with the big picture of what’s currently going on in this country.

And I learned emptywheel’s name from watching the streamed version of a YearlyKos panel she was on. It’s Marcy Wheeler. She’s not hiding behind a pseudonym. If CSPAN didn’t identify her, it’s not her fault.

  20. the fly-man Says:

I think it is so disengenious to compare 2006 with the 1700’s. the complexity of the issues, the amount of information necessary to make an informed descion regarding political candidates is far greater than in the 1700’s. I’m just saying that if there are no rules to the blogosphere why not accept my quieries as part of the soultion. Leaders are real people. Mark my word this is the achille’s heel of this movement, it’s just plain misleading. Why are there truth in advertising laws?

  21. G.W.SuperChrist Says:

According to all of the Sunday morning talking heads - Zarqawi is the most powerful terrorist in the world… even more powerful than Osama.

As republicans talk up Zarqawi’s status to make it seem as though his death this week was a really really big thing… they fail to realize that his elevated status is evidence of our failed foreign policy.

In 2002 Zarqawi was little more than a local stone thrower… but because of our intervention in Iraq he in 3 short years has become the most powerful terrorist in the world… and now their most notable martyr.

Heck of a job PNAC… I’m feeling safer already!!!

  23. Zookeeper Says:

#19 - Rangel doesn’t believe his bill has a chance in hell of passing, he’s trying to make a point and stir up the debate. Why would TP delete that?

  24. peg Says:

rangel introduced the bill that would reinstate the draft so that

    1) people like gwb & cheney couldn’t avoid the draft

    2) politicians would think twice about mandatory draft because their kids would have to go to war

  25. unbelievable Says:

In Rangel’s bill are there no loopholes to get out of the draft? Because that’s how George and Dick-tator avoided service themselves…

    I think it’s brilliant.

  26. American Patriot Says:

NO LOOPHOLES? Are you kidding me? I know lawyers that can find loopholes in ANYTHING.

Just because a dem introduced the bill you’re for it?

I guess it because of people like you that allowed bushy to steal two elections. I hope he changes the constitution to allow a third term BECAUSE OF WARTIME. Maybe then you people will pull your heads out of your ass.

  45. Stupid Republicans Says:

Golly, I”m surprised to see that the post about the draft reinstatement is still here.

The reason I posted it is because I believe we need to get this peice of legislation off the table before campaigns are in full swing.

I can already hear the Republicans: The democrats want to reinstate the draft.

Dont vote for them, on one hand they say the war is illegal and on the other hand they want to send your children to fight the so-called illegal war.

I guess this bill does anwer the age old question, why cant democrats win elections?

About the forcing the pug kids to fight argument: Yeah right, since when do republicans abide by the rules and laws of this nation?

How long do you think it would take them to get a doctors note claiming they have a heart murmer, athsma or restless leg syndrome that disqualifies them?

Do we really want to send a message to Bubble boy that if he chooses to start another illegal war we have plenty of kids to fight that war? How stupid and irresponsible would that be?

I would hope that TP would get in front of this before the pugs come out swinging on this issue. TP would be smart to encourage its readers/posters to call this democrat in disguise and tell him to get this bill off the table now.

  46. Spudge_Boy Says:

There is no such thing as a no loophole law. Any law known to man has some form of loophole. Let’s see your brilliance and come up with one. ANY one.

You are correct. It is the way laws are written. Here is how you write it, so there are no loopholes.

“All persons within the borders of the United States and all American citizens outside the borders of the United States of America, once reaching the age 18 shall serve no less than 2 years in the US Military as active duty personel. Nothing shall be added or taken away from the meaning of this amendmant.”

    Show me the loophole.

  48. Spudge_Boy Says:

Get your law passed Spudge and I will call you a miracle worker.

By the way, are you willing to sacrifice your children to an illegal war just to force the politicians to do the same?

Sounds dumb to me but hey if you think its worth sacrificing the lives of your kids to make a point then thats your poragative.

  51. Stupid Republicans Says:

Hi trueblue, I used to appreciate unbelievables posts but lately she argues with anyone who disagrees with her. (observe her reaction to this post) She has been reduced to name calling and ranting. Arguments are weak, shortsighted and unorganized. She needs to take a break I think.

  52. trueblue Says:

    #51 Stupid Republicans,

I don’t think Spudge is including illegal wars. He’s simply making a point about a no loophole law.
If there WAS a draft, it would be during war and peace.

I would have no real qualms about having my daughter serve her country by ordering supplies, typing, etc. She has Epilepsy and there’s no way she’d see action.

HOWEVER, with this totally bogus, made up war, I have MAJOR qualms about ANYONE being forced to serve.

    Does that make sense?

  53. American Patriot Says:

Spudge - Normally, I would agree with you but try to get a politician to pass a law that YOU write. I don’t know about a loophole in YOUR law but thats why I leave that shit up to a lawyer to handle. Cmon man, come back to earth.

#52 - I think unbelievable is off her meds again. Poor ole sow.

  54. trueblue Says:

    or am I being naive?

  55. American Patriot Says:

trueblue - OK, I’ll play along with made up war game. If a medical condition cannot get a person away from the draft that would mean mentally challenged people can get drafted. Retards and EVERYONE. Regardless of any medical condition. You say give these people “clerical” positions. Right?

Are you out of your mind? Does this even remotely sound plausable to you? Does it sound even REMOTELY realistic?

Maybe this is a reason we have bushy in the white house. You people are not living in the REAL WORLD.

Why argue over something about a made up war?

No one’s perfect here, and it’s easy to misunderstand what people write as opposed to them saying it to you (tone, inflection, whatever..) but calling a person a C-word and a hawg just because they don’t agree with you is over the line in my book.
    Just my opinion.
I don’t want to get in the middle of this….

  57. trueblue Says:

    American Patriot,
    please don’t cherry-pick my comment.
    I said war AND peace.
    Just serve.
    Everyone.
    It can be done.
If you are mentally incapable of clerical duties, they can clean the offices.
Down Syndrome kids can bag groceries @ Star Market, why can’t they pitch in on SOME level.
War OR peace, as Spudge’s law would say.
    Everyone do their fair share.
It’s a fair concept and shouldn’t be summarily dismissed.

As if, trueblue! Most of the threads are like this today.

I got Zoo Jr graduated, and managed not to call the ex a twat, since he apologized to me for being a twat. I almost fell down! Good to see you here.

    Unbelievable,

You directed your message at those discussing the issue. I was one of them. That makes it ‘my business’. And your message was nasty, so you just got back what you put out there. And are now crying about it because you can’t handle it.

Then a different ex (15 years ago) ended up in my town and was looking to see me.
    Wierd.

  82. Zookeeper Says:

    So, how was the graduation?
    Comment by trueblue

unbelievable had asked before, and I finally found this on the Matalin thread and copied it:

It was fantastic! I’m glad they held it in the football stadium, because even though Zoo Jr’s class only had 186 graduates, there were about 10,000 people there — 1/2 of the stadium was full. We had excellent seats, and I only teared up once, when the speaker told the kids he wasn’t going to wish them a “nice life,” because if your whole life is nice you won’t have accomplished a damn thing. I was teary because it’s so true, and Zoo Jr knows it, and that made me proud. Jr got his diploma, shook hands with the principal and school superintendent, like the gentleman he tries so hard to be, and then raised both arms over his head, made a loud whooping noise, and leaped off the stage. Dignity R Us, as I always say! When they filed out, Jr hooked arms with his favorite Belgian exchange student, and they skipped all the way out.

Your ex still deserves to be boiled in oil. If it were me, I’d be looking for a good drop off point, if you know what I mean. ;)

  83. trueblue Says:

    OK, Zookeeper,
I teared up just reading that! (Weenies Anonymous, that’s me!)

I loved the skipping thing, though!

I got my revenge. Don’t worry. (Not something I’m going to post here, but it was still worth it!)

Funny how men can be like that… Show up when you have no inclination to see them again… Sometimes I think it’s about not knowing what you’ve got until it’s gone, and other times I just think it’s part of their culture…

I’m like Zoo, perfectly happy being single. There’s a great line from an Ally McBeal episode where she says that the worst times are when you feel alone with someone right next to you… or something like that. I think our culture misinforms women to believe that we are incomplete without a man.

    I think they are called ‘ex’ s for a reason… :)

  86. trueblue Says:

Actually, Zookeeper, he was actually hinting about moving in!!

  87. Spudge_Boy Says:

Retards and EVERYONE. Regardless of any medical condition. You say give these people “clerical” positions. Right?

There are plenty of jobs in the military that can be performed by people with retardation. That is not an excuse. How about mess hall worker. No reason to pay a civilian to do the job for twice as much as a military person is, the way it is doen now.

Now, I have given the retarded people a job and have saved the American taxpayer money.

That money could go towards something else or could pay another American citizens payroll while serving.

That’s where I heard it! I couldn’t remember for the life of me. I’ve found it works well.

A couple of days ago when I was taunting you with Zoo Jr and his big box of condoms, you said your daughter has epilepsy. Now I understand why you’re so protective! Zoo Jr the Elder (age 24) has autism, and I’ve struggled mightily over the years with my protection of him. He decided this weekend that he wanted to go to Oregon to stay with the twat for the summer, or permantently if he can find work. At first I thought I was going to faint, but I think I’ve done everything I can for him, so I had to let him try. So I’ll have to wait and see. The bad thing is that he couldn’t take his companion dog with him because they have two big smelly dogs already, and now she’s just wandering around looking for him. Poor baby.

I’ve noticed that you get very peturbed and angry when people disagree with you. You admit that you always get the last word and that leads me to believe that you enjoy arguing. I made a comment about you taking a break because I think its a waste to ruin your leisure time by arguing and getting angry.
Anger at the Administration is understandable but I see yours directed at anti-Bush Regime people all the time. Divide and Conquer, oldest trick in the book, don’t fall for it.

However, if you enjoy spending your leisure time arguing and getting angry thats your poragative.

    Back to the draft proposal.

trueblue, you mentioned that you would send your daughter (who has epilepsy) to the war because she could be useful in a clerical position.

Who do you think Donald Rumsfeld is going to assign the clerical jobs? Your daughter or the daughter of a Senator? Do you trust Donald Rumsfeld with your daughters life?

Got to think like a republican Spudge, Imagine an investigation is launched about the behavior of our troops. The military goes to the record dept to assist in the investigation. Oops, the retarded soldier deleted all pertinent data. Guess that investigation is over.

My humor is just very dry… and mature. And I don’t sugar coat things. It’s a waste of time in a debate. Plus, I wasn’t raised to be demure. It’s not my thing. Besdies, Spudge is not demure or soft-spoken and I never see anyone lecturing him on that. Why just the gals?

Yes, I like to argue. I’ve never denied that. But I’m not angry. It’s just a game.

Well, maybe you a good debater but from where I’m sitting your arguments are weak and short sighted. You grab hold of one point and refuse to see any other points made. People here offer up many well thought out points. Most of them good. No offense, but I think you see things as black and white. If its just a game for you then I understand but I thought we were sharing ideas. If you’re here just to make friends, thats okay too.

You are taking seriously a guy who also goes by the name ‘E. Coli’. That’s what’s really funny.

  137. American Patriot Says:

Gee trueblue, next time you can’t afford a Christmas gift for your kid like you did last Christmas, don’t expect to get my advice again.

    Oooooooooooooo!

  138. unbelievable Says:

I bet the school board would love to find out about this.
    Comment by American Patriot — June 11, 2006 @ 7:55 pm

You just get funnier and funnier… But I am laughing at you and not with you. of course.

You actually think you can monger fear with that comment? How ridiculous!

Go ahead and call them… tell them that during my planning period, and lunch, and when students were working on projects or assignments individually. I posted on TP. They’ll laugh at you live. Wanna know why? because I work during the summer, and after hours and on weekends - for free. Idiots.

  139. Smack Says:

Basically, after the first 5 posts, the thread is hijacked. I’d rather not feed these types of people by responding to them directly.

  140. trueblue Says:

    Hey, Unbelievable,

I took a standard test in 5th grade. IQ, whatever, I don’t know.

It scored me as one of the top students in the city.

They transferred me to a different school that offered excelerated learning.

But I guess I’d be BRAGGING if I differed with someone else’s opinion….

Isn’t that funny how the men think it’s bragging, but they have the “inherent knowledge?”

    TP: Sexism.

  144. unbelievable Says:

If I need to be ignored so bad, why do you keep coming back to me?
    LOSER!!!
    Comment by American Patriot — June 11, 2006 @ 8:00 pm

Is that really the best you have? Because your best is pretty lame. The high school kids don’t even say ‘loser’… that’s so elementary school.

Men in this country over the age of 25 still cannot handle strong and intelligent women. Notice that women were talking about the subject of thedraft when Mr. Always Pissing-in-his-pants decided to slam us? Spudge interjects with a curt comment, and he’s respected.

Some of them - yep. Most of them are good guys. Maybe explains why Ryan and Gregor haven’t been around as much. They don’t want to be considered by the company they keep….

    Comment by American Patriot — June 11, 2006 @ 8:07 pm

How cliche… like all of your intended insults. Can’t you do better? Not even a little (like your wiener?)

  149. American Patriot Says:

    Right on Denny.

I’m sure she’s fuming pretty bad now. Did you see when she told SR that TP is beneath her debate skills. The hog is a joke. Pathetic. Very pathetic.

Perhaps, since shes not askeered of her school board she would be glad to provide a phone number. But alas, she is just like bushy. All talk.

    ROFLMFAO!!!!!!

Now let’s return to the chicks with dicks club. Program currently in progress…..

    Comment by Denny — June 11, 2006 @ 8:09 pm

If you got that wrong - then you got the rest wrong. Or you’re delusional.

How many fat vegans do you know?

I dare you to say something about an issue (great mins discuss ideas while small minds discuss people).

  151. American Patriot Says:

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if her and tb are one and the same AND they both are santo in disguise.

    Pathetic.

    LMAO!!!!!!

  152. unbelievable Says:

Now it is YOU who will be ignored.
    Comment by American Patriot — June 11, 2006 @ 8:10 pm

Yes! Mission Accomplished! Best thing you’ve said all day!

  153. unbelievable Says:

    Right on Denny.

    You’re agreeing with a retard…

I’m sure she’s fuming pretty bad now.

Nope. You aren’t important enough to get me upset. It’s more like target practice - you set ‘em up and i shoot ‘em down…

Did you see when she told SR that TP is beneath her debate skills. The hog is a joke. Pathetic. Very pathetic.

You have nothing, so you start making stuff up? That’s very neocon of you…

Perhaps, since shes not askeered of her school board she would be glad to provide a phone number. But alas, she is just like bushy. All talk.

Sure… who will you say you are calling about when there are thousands of teachers who work for them? You really aren’t terribly bright…

    ROFLMFAO!!!!!!

    Comment by American Patriot — June 11, 2006 @ 8:18 pm

Are you capable of an original thought? Even one? You’ve not said one clever thing all day that has’t already been worn out by every second-rate talk show host already.

Besides, you said you were leaving… ?

  155. Denny Says:

    UNB:

I don’t believe any thing you say about yourself.
You’ve been known to lie and distort. That’s probably a better meaning for your name.

  156. trueblue Says:

    Hi Again, Unbelievable,

It’s funny how that person who gave you a hard time runs whenever there’s a couple of women around.
I think he has issues. I could be wrong, but the evidence points to it.
I LOVE Spudge, and Gregor, And Ryan! I wish they were around more often.
    Know who I miss?
    Joe6pack!!!!!

I always thought of “Sawyer” from “Lost” whenever he spoke up. Have no idea why. Guess it’s the same personality type: trying to hide the ’soft side’ behind the’gruff exterior’ thing. Probably stupid, but that was my reaction!

What happened to get American Pr*ck’s panties in a twist?
    It’s obvious from his posts that he’s a woman-hater.

(Look back and link all of just his together. It spells it out.)

But, DAMN! No one deserves that! The C- word???
    (That’s a hater right there!)

I will always think you’re great, because you’re (cue the music…..)
