ThinkFast AM: June 13, 2006»

Republican House leaders unveiled a draft resolution that will be the subject of this week’s floor debate on Iraq. But the resolution cloaked the Iraq conflict under the broader war against terrorism. In a letter to House Majority Leader John Boehner, Rep. Ike Skelton, ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, said, “I think you well understand that the war in Iraq is a separate conflict, an insurgency with terrorist elements and sectarian violence.”

An EPA rule designed to keep “groundwater clean near oil drilling sites and other construction zones was loosened after White House officials rejected it amid complaints by energy companies that it was too restrictive and after a well-connected Texas oil executive appealed to White House senior advisor Karl Rove.”

The Washington Post reviews the writings of new White House domestic policy adviser Karl Zinsmeister, who started his job yesterday. “With a sharp pen,” Zinsmeister personally attacked his opponents, for instance, calling Al Gore a “mad dog” known to “foam at the mouth.” Jacques Chirac, Nelson Mandela, Gerhard Schroeder and Kofi Annan were labeled “feckless fools.”

A new study shows the “bloody fingerprints” of global warming: Polar bears “may be turning to cannibalism because longer seasons without ice keep them from getting to their natural food.”

“Faced with a widening federal investigation into his ties to a high-powered lobbying firm, House Appropriations Chairman Jerry Lewis (R-CA) has retained a criminal defense attorney. … Lewis is facing federal scrutiny over his dealings with the lobbying firm Copeland, Lowery, Jacquez, Denton & White. FBI officials recently pulled Lewis’ personal financial records, and several current and former Lewis aides also are being investigated.”

Iranian police beat women’s rights activists at a rally of about 200 people yesterday. The women “demanded equal rights for women and the nullification of a law allowing Iranian men to have four wives.” None of Iran’s state-run media outlets reported on the protest.

Private military contractors are earning billions of dollars in Iraq — much of it from U.S. taxpayers. … Lucrative U.S. government contracts go to firms called on to provide security for projects and personnel — jobs that in previous conflicts have been done by the military.”

The National Religious Campaign Against Torture, a group of twenty-seven distinguished religious leaders, have signed a statement urging the United States to “abolish torture now — without exceptions.” The statement, being published in newspaper advertisements starting today, states that torture “violates the basic dignity of the human person” and “contradicts our nation’s most cherished values.”

Al Gore is looking to spread his global warming message beyond movie theaters. Gore said yesterday “that by the end of the summer he would start a bipartisan education campaign to train 1,000 people to give a version of his slide show on global warming featured in the film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and book of the same name.”

And finally: locals and tourists in St. Andrews, Scotland, don’t seem to know much about Abramoff’s infamous golf junket. “For all the Beltway chatter…, locals in this windswept beach town are distinctly uninterested. […] As for Americans misbehaving in St. Andrews, locals would rather talk about recent allegations that actor Kevin Costner acted inappropriately during a massage at the spa in the Old Course Hotel.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

  2. Democrat Soldier Says:

Bring out the Republican spin line! Like a dervish on crack, the “insurgency with terrorist elements and sectarian violence” is part of the “broader war against terrorism” because if there was no attacking Iraq based upon (false) ties with terrorists, then there would be no “insurgency with terrorist elements and sectarian violence.”

See? Isn’t it simple? The war in Iraq, which was (falsly) attributed to weapons of mass destruction (that didn’t exist), and which (now) was solely for the purpose of removing a evil dictator from power (ignore N. Korea as no oil is in his country) has (now) always been a part of the “broader war against terrorism.” (Ignore the fact that Usama bin Laden HATES Saddam Hussein.)

There, got it? If you need any more spin on this subject, speak to any Republican or troll on this site. They’ll be more than happy to spin the subject some more.

  3. Evil Spaniard Says:

About Iraq: There is a new deployment of 75000 troops in Baghdad, only. That’s half the USA military there! (I know, Iraqis will be deployed as well, but hey, it’s a great number of troops, anyways). What they plan? Level the city to rubble? Scary, no less.

  5. I-RIGHT-I Says:

WASHINGTON, June 13 — The prosecutor in the C.I.A. leak case on Monday advised Karl Rove, the senior White House adviser, that he would not be charged with any wrongdoing, effectively ending the nearly three-year criminal investigation that had at times focused intensely on Mr. Rove.

The decision by the prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, announced in a letter to Mr. Rove’s lawyer, Robert D. Luskin, lifted a pall that had hung over Mr. Rove who testified on five occasions to a federal grand jury about his involvement in the disclosure of an intelligence officer’s identity.

    […]

We believe that the Special Counsel’s decision should put an end to the baseless speculation about Mr. Rove’s conduct.”

Are you kidding? The Filthy Left has only begun to publish baseless speculation. Congratulations to KKKarl for putting up with the slander and gross hypocrisy of Satan’s minions here in the USA. May his slander and libel lawsuits against the Left break their bank. Baseless accusations should be very costly.

#5 - “Congratulations to KKKarl for putting up with the slander and gross hypocrisy of Satan’s minions here in the USA.”

Actually, KKKarl has been very proficient at helping the Republican party (or as you properly label them, “Satan’s minions here in the USA”). You know, the party that slandars at the drop of a hat and is the most hypocriticcal political party in the US.

“Baseless accusations should be very costly.”

You’d think they would. Unfortunately, the Republican party will not be held responsible for the baseless accusations they make on a regular basis. The Republican party is no longer the party of “personal responsibility”, but you are quite aware of that fact, “Right between the I’s”.

More interesting news from the peaceful Pal’s in the disputed territory God gave to the Jews…..

Jerusalem—–June 11…….An Israel Defense Forces intelligence officer has confirmed that the explosion that killed eight Palestinians on Friday, was caused by a stockpile of Hamas explosives.

“Shortly after we stopped defensive firing at Hamas rocket launch pads which were deployed behind Palestinian human shields, members of Hamas scrambled to fire more rockets at our positions,” said Col. M. “We have eyes on every meter of Gaza, from the sky, from the ground and from the sea. One of their rocket tripods collapsed inadvertently setting off an explosion of a stockpile of Qassam rockets. The Palestinians killed their own children. And this was not the first time.”

    Comment by Democrat Soldier

Don’t blame me if the Republicans have adopted the Donks habit pursuing the politics of personal destruction, they asked for it. In my opinion it was a little late in coming. In any case I’m not a Republican. I’m an independent conservative who hates the Filthy Left and doesn’t think much of W’s compassionate conservative bullsh*t. In other words, I’m so far to the right you have to look over your left shoulder to see me coming. If I was in charge the words “treason” and “sedition” would be used in federal courtrooms to describe many prominent liberals and conservatives.

  11. Democrat Soldier Says:

#10 - Trust me when I say the majority of Americans thank God whole heartedly that you are not anywhere close to being “in charge”. It’s people like you who hate the American Constitution that are bringing us down. It’s sick-o-’Phants of your political persuasion that make average Americans sick of the spin, calumny, and mendacity that are the staples of the “neo-con” existence.

The Republicans in office have fallen into sin and vice due to their personal irresponsibility and hubris. They can only blame themselves and their continuing failed policies for their perusing the politics of personal destruction.

It’s going to be a wonderful day on the 8th of Nov. when we hear how they’ve lost seats in both the House and Senate. It’s going to be a day of rejoicing and national pride when Pres. Bush is shown the door on the 20th of January 2009.

“Iran’s Islamic law imposes tight restrictions on women. They need a male guardian’s permission to work or travel. Women are not allowed to become judges, and a man’s court testimony is considered twice as important as a woman’s.”

I have a bigger problem with women not being “allowed” to work or travel without male permission, being considered approximately 1/2 of a man in court testimony, and being beaten for protesting, than I do with men being allowed to have 4 wives. Maybe there’s something more to the 4wives issue than is being reported. I’m glad there were men supporting the protesting women.

#16 - “And it’s gonna be even better when you realise you still don’t have control of either.”

I never said that we would be in control, I only stated that the Republicans would have fewer seats. Are you putting words in my mouth? I thought you were above that sort of thing, Squeegeeboo. I guess I have to re-evaluate your ethics and morals.

“So the left gets mad when we don’t pull the troops out, but then we start pulling the troops out and replacing them with mercs, and the left is still mad?”

First error you made: “we start pulling the troops out”. We have not started pulling troops out to replace them with mercenaries. Second error you made: “jobs that in previous conflicts have been done by the military.” What part of “jobs that in previous conflicts” did you skip over?

I much prefer that the responsibility be held to accountable standards. When yuo have the Iraqi government unable to prosecute non-iraqi non-military offenders, do you honestly think these merc’s will give a flying f#@& if they intentionally target innocent people? If you do, then I’ve got some prime water-front real estate in Florida that you’ll be interested in buying. You can’t see it before hand, but that won’t be a problem if you’re THAT trusting.

you are a very dim bulb… and shortsighted to boot…
those “security” jobs SHOULD still be done by the militay, and the money used to pay them a living wage - NOT set up our military to guard the contractors who make 10x the money…
the troops are NOT being pulled out, but the mercs sent in are getting rich - at taxpayer expense - that doesn’t piss YOU off?

Ahh! I see. Broad sweeping generalizations are acceptable to you. (And I’m not talking about the heavy set female doing the sweeping. ;-)

Well, then why do you take such umbrage when the left makes broad sweeping generalizations of the right / conservatives? Is this another one of those “it’s OK for me to do it, but you can’t” type of arguments? What’s the other term for that? Oh, it’s hypocrisy.

By the way, I much prefer to “argue’ with you than “Right between the I’s” any day. He is so caught up in his own perfection that his hubris is blinding his judgment.

Actually, it was my insistence that the First Amendment didn’t trump the Second Amendment simply because of the order they were put in the Constitution. Also, while I support a woman’s right to choose, I still think that abortion is the wrong choice. The difference is that you can be anti-abortion and still be pro-choice. You cannot be pro-choice and anti-choice at the same time. ;-) (Like my switching of the rhetoric to fit my political perspective?!?!?)

So THAT’S what happened to “Right between the I’s”! I always wondered why he is such a hateful and bitter man.

#38 - “And how would the first ammendment trump the second one?” It doesn’t. My friends were of the belief that gun’s should be outlawed. I disagree. Not that I’m some “happiness is a warm handgun” kind of freak! Nor am I the “sniper guns should be legal” nutcase you hear at the local NRA meetings. I just want to be ready to defend myself when the theocrats take over the Republican party in America and come to get me. ;-)

The Town has a cinema again… It was closed for most of my childhood. There is almost nothing to do there. LAst time I was there you could Golf, Drink or walk along the sea cliffs…. I’m signed up as a volunteer, but they say they don’t need me for the planning stage, just the working the event stage.

In all the years that I have taken classes there have never been more than three straight men in any of them… Mostly women. There are cooking classes you could take to meet women interested in cooking… Or you could just get over tradition and be the one who cooks for her… While maybe she does something else for you…???

Turns out its two small Avulsion fractures, so not good, but not horrible, thats what I get for playing after the first time I rolled the ankle, but couldn’t let the team down.

  64. Zookeeper Says:

Avulsion fracture, also known as “dancer’s fracture.” Apparently not a graceful dancer’s fracture, but there you have it. Take it easy and just let it heal. Such a hero, playing injured for the team. I hope they’re bringing you dinner. ;)

I had to, they helped me paint my house friday to make sure I could make it.

So no game tonight? :( Hopefully by next week I’ll be back in the action.
