The press may be gushing over the recent “positive developments” for President Bush, but The Carpetbagger Report reminds us what good news really looks like.
More plagiarism by Ann Coulter in her new book, Godless.
Ezra Klein responds to the right wing’s “same old canards about wage increases decimating jobs.” “The minimum wage, of course, doesn’t decide employment on its own,” he writes, and “any attempt to correlate minimum wage increases with joblessness falls on its face.” (He has the graphs to prove it.)
House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) has mixed his private interests with official business. Hastert “has used an Illinois trust to invest in real estate near the proposed route of the Prairie Parkway, a highway project for which he’s secured $207 million in earmarked appropriations.”
At Take Back America 2006, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) calls for troop withdrawal from Iraq, stresses that wiretapping terrorists must be done within the law, and throws aside the Bush administration’s “war on terror” rhetoric.
And finally: Liberal bloggers start a YearlyKos 2006 group on Flickr, highlighting photos from the week’s conference.

June 14th, 2006 at 7:33 pmThis is EXACTLY why we liberals need to stand up to the neocons and expose their corruption. Turning the other cheek in this case would have allowed her to continue her hate-mongering unchecked, and eroneously make us look like our silence was a result of shameful acquiescence.
From the Raw Story article:
But fifteen of Coulter’s examples are nearly identical to a longer list of seventeen compiled by the Illinois Right To Life website, which has been available since at least September of 2003 (current link, archived 9/03 link).
“Repair heart attack damage (using the patient’s own blood stem cells),” says the Illinois Right To Life Committee Website.
“Repairing heart attack damage with the patient’s own blood stem cells,” writes Coulter.
“Restore bone marrow in cancer patients (using stem cells from umbilical cord blood),” says the Website.
“Restoring bone marrow in cancer patients using stem cells from umbilical cord blood,” Coulter writes.
For these fifteen items, Coulter appears to do little more than remove the parentheses and slightly change a word or two, such as “using” into “with.”

George Carlin will surely tear Coulter to shreds tonight on Leno if he gets a chance, no?
June 14th, 2006 at 7:39 pmLt. Pantano (ret.) has written a book about his machoness in killing two Iraqis and hanging a sign over their heads. The Marines think he does not need to be reprimanded.
We are doomed in Iraq if we continue to condone killing Iraqis in cold blood.
How far are we going to allow people to go before we say this is not acceptable. And I wonder if this will win hearts and minds.

June 14th, 2006 at 7:49 pm“George Carlin will surely tear Coulter to shreds tonight on Leno if he gets a chance, no?” - - This might be far more interesting if it was on anything-goes HBO, Carlin was about 20 years younger, and if they’re on at the same time. You’re probably right. I’m thinking I’ll wait to see if anything pops up tomorrow on YouTube, here at TP, or C&L. Probably not worth watching the show tonight.
June 14th, 2006 at 8:06 pmTwo additions:
(1) Specter’s new May 11th proposal for FISA “reform” would provide Bush with a defense to the commencement of impeachment proceedings based on illegal NSA spying as it expressly ratifies Bush’s prior illegal acts and also provides amnesty from criminal prosecution to Bush, administration officials and telecom executives who participated in NSA spying programs pursuant to Bush’s constitutional authority. The new Specter proposal also provides that the controlling principle in FISA is that all provisions must be consistent with Bush’s inherent constitutional presidential authority. And, the big whopper is that the new provisions are RETROACTIVE to the DATE OF ENACTMENT of FISA, which is 1978, or well before Bush assumed office.
(2) There is now a video of Marine singing song that glorifies the killing of innocent Iraqi family.

Just like you neo-cons - blame the wrong people. It’s her parents who can take culpability for how they culturally indocrinated their child. A child who didn’t see teachers until she was engrained with virtues by the people who are a child’s role models - her parents.
Just like you can blame the wolves who raised you for your bad manners, negativity, and paranoid delusions.

Is that the excuse not to raise minimum wage? That’s pathetic, minimum wage needs to be able to do what it was originally intended to do, oh yeah, and crime might decrease if more minimum wage earners are experiencing a better quality of life.

June 14th, 2006 at 11:00 pmDoes anyone remember who it is that was assigned the job to “win the hearts and minds” of Iraqis? Was it Cheney’s daughter… seems it was some woman related to the Bush team. Anyhow, with a pretty steady stream of bad news about videos and songs and intentional killings and the like, does not seem that person is doing such a great job. It’s not just the initial act but the military statements afterwards where they just keep sticking their foot in their mouth.
June 14th, 2006 at 11:05 pmHey Juan,
I am against this occupation of Iraq. However, I wouldn’t blame the Marines or other personnel for whats happening. I blame the dudes who sent them. Most normal people placed in those circumstances are capable of war atrocities.

I understand your point. US citizens seem to be very sensitive when it comes to the troops, due to (my guess) a generalized idea that you hold global leadership and these poor guys are scattered all over the world overthrowing governments just to satisfy economical interests. Of course, leaders are to blame, but US is a country of choices, right? (that is very common motto) then, they can choose. I would choose.

i think the attitude is formed before basic - bigotry and racism are learned at home… i see it around here all the time… even this far north, plenty of confederate flag stickers… but this brand of “brown people” have been even more hated and scorned, and it seems that those attitudes are based on ignorance, not just simple intolerance… i’ve heard the term “sand n___er” far too many times - and often directed at Indian nationals… it’s sheer stupidity… and sad…
but, yes, add to that instructions on killing - volatile combination…

June 15th, 2006 at 8:06 amAbout Ann Coulter’s plagarism from the Illinois Right to Life website, did either Ann or the website give sources for their claims? Some of these look intriguing.
June 15th, 2006 at 10:01 amAnn’s plagarism doesn’t bother me as much as her lack of research and independent verification. She is just spitting out third hand information without checking to find the original source or to verify the truth of these claims. The Raw Story article had her repeating a mistake originally made on 60 minutes.
Do you think she is too lazy to do proper research, or merely ignorant of the neccesity?
About Ann Coulter’s plagarism from the Illinois Right to Life website, did either Ann or the website give sources for their claims?
According to the article at Raw Story - she gave no reference or acknowledgment in any regard. The passages were unreferenced as if she’d come up with them herself. I don’t know about the Right to Life website. I didn’t go there. I consider them a tainted source anyway.
Some of these look intriguing.

Her law degree suggests to me that she is either too lazy (or, in her anorexic case - too malnourished) to do the work, delusional (from lack of eating), or just immoral and arrogant enough to think she could make a buck off someone else’s words (how very neocon of her).
Should be interesting to see if she responds…

This is a crime that Democratic Presidential Candidates have been quite rightly condemned and forced to leave the race. June 15th, 2006 at 11:58 amMy name is Matt, and I work on the Lee Harris for Memphis campaign in the Tennessee 9th Democratic primaries.
I support increasing the minimum wage because low-wage earners often struggle to stay above the poverty line.
The minimum wage issue is on Lee’s platform. He believes that all workers should earn a fair and decent wage. The cost of living is continually up. Utility prices, food prices, gas prices. But the minimum wage is not going up. This makes it more difficult for people earning the minimum wage because they can’t keep up with the rising costs of everything.
Congress is aware of the rising cost of living. They passed a pay raise for themselves to account for the increasing cost of living. It is time to ensure that working families, too, can keep up with the cost of living.
Lee Harris is a big supporter of increasing the minimum wage, like I said earlier. Last week, he sponsored a benefit concert for waiters and waitresses to raise awareness of the plight of servers who often are paid low wages and do not receive any benefits. He recently released a position paper on the issue. That paper can be found at http://www.leeharrisformemphis.com/ images/ CreatingFairDecentWages.pdf
Lee also supports setting a timeframe for withdrawing from Iraq. It is time to bring our troops home.
If you are interested in learning more about Lee, you can visit his website at http://www.leeharrisformemphis.com
