In an interview with a right-wing website, Ann Coulter said that Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) is “the reason soldiers invented ‘fragging.’” Fragging is a term “most commonly meaning to assassinate an unpopular member of one’s own fighting unit by dropping a fragmentation grenade into the victim’s tent at night.” Meanwhile, Coulter’s media blitz continues.

We love you too, Anne.
Your mom must be so proud. If you had one.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:17 pmIsn’t that against the law? Threatening a congressman.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:18 pmThis is Coulter’s idea of “humor”? There are people who find this kind of talk funny? When will people stop listening to that horrid man? (Coulter, of course.)
June 16th, 2006 at 12:21 pmThe author of ‘Godless’ matches the title of her book.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:34 pmYou can dress her up, but you can’t take her out…
June 16th, 2006 at 12:35 pmJust when you thought she couldn’t get any crazier…
June 16th, 2006 at 12:37 pmCoulter speaks for the GOP. Some of them don’t like to own up to their own values in public, but there they are nonetheless. Coulter is the defacto leader of the GOP in the trenches. She spreads the seeds, the lies and hatred, and the GOP reaps the votes that she raises at election time.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:38 pmGOP = COULTER = GOP = COULTER.
And Coulter claims to be Christian? WWJD? Well murder anyone who disagrees. I don’t think so. If my suspicions are correct Coulter is the Anti-Christ.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:39 pm#5-Zookeeper,
Sir, that’s probably one of better double entendres I have ever seen.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:40 pmIf I was her publisher I would be pretty embarrassed. I sure wouldn’t be eager to publish any more of her books.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:40 pmAs Sullivan quips, “if only the returns were diminishing”!
June 16th, 2006 at 12:40 pmIs she breaking the law by advocating murder? Or are Republicans exempt - like Pat Robertson?
June 16th, 2006 at 12:42 pmOn the other hand, perhaps she should keep up her ranting diatribes and give further proof of her lunacy, as she speaks for the Republicans.
“It” also called for a terrorist attack on the New York Times building and the poisoning murder of a sitting Supreme Court justice.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:42 pmI’m sure that her limited audience of deranged lunatics feels the same way and probably wishes to act on her hate crime speech.
It’s only a matter of time before we get another Timothy McVeigh/Ann Coulter terrorist attack in this country as Ann pushes her fringe audience further over the cuckoo’s nest.
No comments. Doesnt deserve one.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:44 pmSmells like a Nazi.

June 16th, 2006 at 12:44 pmWhere are the hordes of Christians who oppose her unChristian values protesting her? Hmm? Oh, that’s right, they are busy protesting funerals of fallen soldiers because ‘god hates gays’…
June 16th, 2006 at 12:44 pmIt’s only a matter of time before we get another Timothy McVeigh/Ann Coulter terrorist attack in this country as Ann pushes her fringe audience further over the cuckoo’s nest.
OxyCon - see, the thing is, I don’t really think she drives her fanbase to anything other than laughter. Her loyal supporters appear to find her funny. Sure, some nutjobs probably take her seriously, but I think they’re the minority. No, the people she’s driving nuts are those who allow her to.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:47 pmToxic Twiggy strikes again! Her book sales must be tanking.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:47 pmDo people still take her seriously? Why do we continue to keep talking about her? Ann does this as her job, I am really starting to think she is not for real.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:48 pmSo her murder list is:
A. Any muslim
B. David Souter , SCOTUS
C. John Murtha
D. Any liberal
E. Any person residing in the UN building in NYC
“It” is a real treat………
June 16th, 2006 at 12:50 pmAnyhow, Ann got the libs pretty good on Leno, she brought up a point that libs aren’t angry about being called Godless, and are focusing on the part about the Jersey Girls.
Now discuss among yourselves, I am feeling verklempt.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:51 pmWWJD? I remember a history from the Bible: when the soldiers came to arrest Jesus, Saint Peter took a sword and cut off a soldier’s ear. Jesus came, reattached the soldier’s ear, and healed the soldier.
Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 “Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”
June 16th, 2006 at 12:55 pmmy people, ms coulter is why i invented cancer… may it visit her dark stinking carcass sooner rahter than later.

June 16th, 2006 at 12:55 pm#21 Of course. I don’t care if she calls me godless. I am more upset for the widows. If she engaged them on the issues I wouldn’t have a problem, but her personal attacks are despicable.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:56 pm#21 I don’t call that getting libs good. I’d call that pointing out libs are good people. I would be a very shallow person to be more upset about Ann questioning my religion.
June 16th, 2006 at 12:59 pmAnyhow, Ann got the libs pretty good on Leno, she brought up a point that libs aren’t angry about being called Godless, and are focusing on the part about the Jersey Girls.
Because any serious lib doesn’t take Coulter seriously. Most of us are complaining that she’s being promoted as someone with gravitas, period. If you hold up what she says and cast it as anything beyond trash, it’s a problem. She shouldn’t be on Good Morning America or Leno, unless it’s to do a stand-up routine.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:00 pmIsnt it Godless to advocate MURDER…
just asking….
June 16th, 2006 at 1:05 pmCoulter hates everyone that is prettier than him…I mean her. And that includes Jack Murtha.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:06 pmThis is exactly WHY I don’t have TV anymore - “Corporate Media - Weapon of MASS DISTRACTION” - and the MSM - well that’s the weapon of MASS DECEPTION.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:07 pmCan we please stop paying attention to people like Ann Coulter? She’s not elected. She’s not appointed to any position of note. She’s not even talented–her writing is poor and her attitude dispicable. Spot paying mind to what she is and does, and start focusing this energy on how your Congressperson voted in yesterday’s Iraq resolution–wasn’t strict party lines, knowhati’msaying? This lady needs to sell books, so she says terrible things. We get it.
Pay attention to things that matter.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:08 pmHate sells. Peace is not-for-profit.

Perfect response. Lets focus complaints not on the substance of her routine(act), but on the fact this comedy routine is taken seriously.

June 16th, 2006 at 1:21 pmI thought Godless was her autobiography…
As an atheist, I was insulted. We infidels don’t condone such immoral and egocentric behavior. (why there are fewer of us in prison).
: )
June 16th, 2006 at 1:23 pmAnn Coulter has stepped over the line by calling for Rep. Murtha to be murdered, so the FBI must put her under arrest TODAY! She must be charged with inciting physical harm on an elected official!
June 16th, 2006 at 1:26 pmOf course the comedy routine is taken seriously. She DOES speak for the GOP.
We would like to think that pointing out her nuttiness would change that, would shame them into dropping her, but all it does is momentarily embarrass them. They get over it very quickly because she brings them the votes they need. They need the bigots. They need the right wing Christofascists. She IS the real public face of the GOP, and all the handwringing and tsk-tsk about what she says is nada, nothing at all.
Fluff.
Couter = hatred = GOP = Coulter.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to ignore her. She’s NOT harmless. She IS the GOP in the trenches. We ignore her at our own peril.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:27 pm#21
June 16th, 2006 at 1:28 pmApparently it is difficult for a Republican to see that a person can actuallyput the interests of others above their own self interest.
Liberals took umbrage with AC because she trashed the widows; sure they’re upset that AC claims they are godless, but to their credit the outrage is channeled to support the widows first.
That is something AC and her ilk find too foreign to comprehend…it’s not in their own thought pattern much less their behavior pattern of me first, all the time, at all cost.
Midol Ann. It’s called Midol. You should try it.

June 16th, 2006 at 1:48 pmProgressive/liberals should not attend to Coulter. Instead, we should continuously ask neo-cons if they support or repudiate her comments. The more she says, the more we can challenge

Such a smooth talker…
June 16th, 2006 at 1:50 pmIf a Democrat called for the murder of Bush, or even Hastert today, then the Secret Service and/or FBI would be at their door this very moment! Coulter has called for Murtha to be killed, so she must be arrested > PERIOD.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:52 pmCoulter is just the clown hired by the GOP to distract the crowd to look the other way as the US soldiers’ bodies are brought back. The GOP has been “in charge” of the White House and both houses of congress and it’s still the “liberals” fault for all this folly we are exposed to? It’s sad, but I already see the fall elections boiled down to one or two false choices and one or two talking points. “Cut and run” any one? Bush won the 2004 election based on “Flip flop” just how stupid is the American public?
June 16th, 2006 at 1:53 pmLet’s label every one of these right-wing nut cases for what they really are …
Ann Coulter Republicans.
Go after the mainstream CONSERVATIVE media for allowing this kook to spew her hate. Write letters, emails, call every station that puts her on the tube. The media is complicit in spreading her poison.
June 16th, 2006 at 1:53 pmJay Randal — You mean like when New York Democrat Alan Hevesi talked about putting a bullet between Bush’s eyes???? I am sure you just as outraged by that remark as well…

June 16th, 2006 at 1:58 pmNever buy any book written by Ann Coulter. If you think you need to read her and you feel you can stomach her writings, then i suggest that you check them out at the library. Not only will you not be giving her a single dime of your money, but if your local librarian gets an NSL letter on you, they’ll think you’re an upstanding Bush-supporting American and leave you alone.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:00 pmMore hate from the godless “Christian” right.
Christians believe in killing, hate, torture, greed and all other forms of hypocrisy.
I’d rather be a progressive who believes in the sanctity of life, accepting and getting along with others (regardless of race, religion, culture, beliefs, country of origin, gender, sexual orientation, etc.) and supporting economic policies that help all, not just the rich.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:00 pmYou can take the man out of the white trash, but you can’t take the white tttrash out of the man.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:00 pm#43, Is he getting national media exposure for this? I mean is his writing in wide spread circulation? Is he hitting the talk show circuit to discuss his latest writings? Please explain your problem with his writing. My probelm with Ann is that she is a shit slinger pure and simple. She will sling whatever shit she finds regrdless of it’s validity.
She is not a fact checker and frequently makes things up out of pure air. With the post you linked to the writer does make comments about Rove’s mother, in poor taste?…yes, but they are not the focus and substance of his message. With GOP Annie her hateful comments are the focus of her message. Do all non-right wingers think the same as the writer you linked to? I don’t think so an you would find few defenders. However Annie has plenty of defenders more than willing to say whatever she writes is good and anyone who questions it is full of it. If you don’t believe me go to the Chicago Tribune’s letters to the editor and see what people are writing in support of GOP Annie.

June 16th, 2006 at 2:14 pmPlease don’t call Coulter a “clown” - that’s an insult to those of us who practice this caring performance art. Coulter is too mean-spirited, cruel, loathsome, and greedy to be called anything but a …?
One comment is not equal to multiple comments, Exley. You cannot compare the two. It is the difference between manslaughterand First Degree murder you know…
June 16th, 2006 at 2:15 pmExely, I agree that Larry Johnson took a swipe at Rove in his column, but I just can’t conjure up much sympathy considering the horrible and nasty things Rove has done and said about his opponents. In his case, turn around is fair play. Isn’t that using his own game tactics. Rove is a despicable, nasty and low-down person, if he can’t take a swipe himself, then he should stop swiping others.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:15 pmRove’s reputation is all about his mean and vile campaign style, learned at the knee of Lee Atwater, who on his dying bed, expressed regret for his life’s work. Knowing your next stop is the pearly gates, alters ones perspective. Meanwhile, Rove continues scheming his next blindside attack.
What about Robertson?
What about Coulter?
What about O’Reilly?
What about Becker?
The list is so long, I will shorten it to:
What about nearly every Republican who has a microphone or a column?
Mr. Schneider has also now added his support of mocking the suicide of a political opponent’s suicide, thereby revealing the utter hypocrisy of those here who claim to be oh-so-outraged by Coulter’s remarks.
I, on the other hand, condemn both Coulter and Johnson’s remarks as reprehensible.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:16 pmExley > anyone who calls for the murder of an elected official has crossed over the line and must be arrested! I dislike Bush, and every fool in his administration, but I call for them to resign or to be impeached > I would never cross the line to call for them to be murdered!
Ann Coulter crossed the line today, so she must be arrested and charged with inciting the murder of Rep. Murtha! If Ann said death to Bush, she would already be in jail today!
June 16th, 2006 at 2:19 pmAs Tweety and Timmy ask every Democrat to defend other Democrats, so should every Republican be asked to defend Ann Coulter - or denounce her.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:19 pmRepublicans like everything in black or white, yes or no, support or denounce - so throw Coulter in their faces.
Why would I care if I was called “Godless” when I am an atheist?
June 16th, 2006 at 2:19 pmLike most of the Founding Fathers. Atheism is american!
And Ann is a scut. But it may very well be illegal for her to threaten congressmen and judges and such. Too bad no one could get a warrant on her.
Marie,
Taking a swipe at Rove is perfectly acceptable. That’s politics. Criticize Rove’s campaign tactics. Criticize his policies. That’s fine…Again, that’s politics.
But mocking Rove’s mother’s suicide is beyond the pale. I think you recognize that too. You can acknowledge that Johnson’s remarks were despicable while still opposing Rove and the Bush administration’s policies.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:21 pmI think we realize that Ms. Coulter enjoys shocking us. The only place I hear about Ms. Coulter is on Think Progress, so I’d prefer that you just ignored her rants.

June 16th, 2006 at 2:24 pm#72, B Berke, apparently you don’t watch any TV, because ‘Mr.’ Coulter has been given a pulpit on several talk shows, political shows, etc., every time ‘it’ has a book out or has said something even more incredibly loathesome than her usual bile. How do you keep your collection of attorneys under control? I’m not doubting your word of course, I just would like to know the mechanics.
June 16th, 2006 at 2:38 pmAlso: How much raw meat do they need a day?
Post 73 Exley > what he said is unacceptable and weird that he said Schumer would shoot the president! I repeat anyone who calls for killing an elected official has crossed over the lline! I have warned people on TP many times to NOT call for the death of Bush, but for his resignation or impeachment! If some fool guns down Rep. Murtha, then Ann Coulter can and should be charged with inciting his murder!
June 16th, 2006 at 2:41 pmExley, I assume you are referring to the lines “Karl is a shameless bastard. This could explain why his mother killed herself. Once she discovered what a despicable soul she had spawned she apparently saw no other way out.”
Yes. Over the top. Great article though! Read it top to bottom. Sent it to some friends. Thanks!

Ok, I’ve been outed. I’m a tough old broad who curses like a sailor. Ask not how much raw meat is required for the attorneys each day, ask how much raw meat they must throw me, for I control their accounting program. Bwwaaahaha!
If they get testy I just throw a chewy toy in the middle or shoot ‘em with the tranquilizer gun. Depends what day it is. ;)
June 16th, 2006 at 2:44 pmJay…Well, at least you are consistent in that you condemn Hevesi’s words as well as Coulter’s. I respect that.
I just wish some others here shared your consistency. To denounce Coulter but think that Johnson’s mocking Rove’s mother’s suicide is funny and acceptable is the height of hypocrisy.

Exley, I agree, what Hevesi said was stupefyingly wrong, but at least he apologized. And nothing excuses anyone joking about anyone’s mother’s death (okay, I can and do make jokes sometimes about my parents deaths, but that’s different, it’s a survival instinct.)

June 16th, 2006 at 3:14 pmAnyone who thinks any of this stuff (this _kind_ of stuff) is new should read Richard Rosenfeld’s history _American Aurora_. It is a huge book with a lot of dense primary material stuffed between its covers - so beware unless you really are interested.
Conservatives may find the “revisionist” tone of the book hard to swallow, but I think any thinking person will recognize a lot of stuff — people, events, etc. — as astonishingly reminiscent of what’s happening right now.
Yeah, yeah, Coulter is loathesome but Coulters have always been around and probably always will be … at least until we evolve beyond the “need” for them. :^)
June 16th, 2006 at 3:40 pmJane E. Schneider … I am glad we agree that Johnson’s comments were inapproriate and vile.
I am also glad that we seemingly agree on something perhaps even more important. LET’S GO METS!!!!!!

June 16th, 2006 at 4:39 pmRemember when Jesse Helms made that threat to Clinton?
http://www.workers.org/ marcy/ cd/ sam94/ 1994html/ s941208.htm
On Nov. 22, Helms, slated to be the new chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Clinton is so unpopular on military bases in North Carolina that “he better watch out if he comes down here. He’d better have a bodyguard.”
Helms made this astounding threat to Clinton in a Raleigh News & Observer interview. The newspaper was questioning Helms about a statement he made Nov. 18 on CNN’s “Evans and Novak” program. When asked then if he thought President Clinton was “up to the job” of Commander in Chief, Helms stated: “No, I do not. And neither do the people in the armed forces.”
While Helms’ threat created nothing less than a worldwide sensation, it was written off by Republican leaders as “That’s just Jesse.” Helms later said his statement was unwise, and that he “should have said it better.”

June 16th, 2006 at 4:58 pmGeez, I once knew someone named George Exley. His distinction from our Exley was that his IQ exceeded his shoe size.
June 16th, 2006 at 6:00 pmOMG, a shock author says something shocking while her book sits atop every book list? Perhaps because she want to keep the attention on her book so to sell more? Shocking! Never been done before!
June 16th, 2006 at 6:41 pmLet’s not forget that this isn’t the first time Ann-thrax has called for the death of a public official she doesn’t like. Didn’t she suggest putting rat poison in Supreme Justice Stevens’ creme brulee last year? She is also being investigated for voter fraud in Florida. What a great spokesperson for the right!/reich!
June 16th, 2006 at 7:37 pmAs one of the last draftees, I’m familiar with the term “fragging”, as used during the VietNam war. Fragging was not used on simply unpopular members of your unit, it was used on the idiots who were likely to get you killed, those gung ho types who took unreasonable risks, had no common sense, or didn’t know what they were doing. Everyone who could use a weapon was valued, no matter how unpopular. It was those who were likely to get you killed that wound up victims of fragging.
June 16th, 2006 at 8:34 pmAs applied to this Coulter/Murtha debate, Murtha looks to me to be the kind of Marine who prepares for risks, who knows what he’s doing, and has a good measure of common sense. Murtha appears to be the kind of Marine leader who men would value, and prefer to serve under. Coulter would be the one more likly to become the victim of a fragging, as a simple kiss up to the generals, trying to make a name for herself, and using you as the “cannon fodder”.
The real sick deal here is that Ms. Coulter says what she says, writes whats she writes, has an audience to whom she is apparently credible, and makes millions. That speaks volumes about how far gone our “culture” is. The other real sick deal is that I am in my “golden years” and too committed to the good old U.S. of A. to even consider moving to somewhere where being tolerant of others is not viewed as a crime against the state and Church.

June 16th, 2006 at 10:33 pmWitch needs to be burned at the stake, immediately.
June 16th, 2006 at 11:13 pm[…] I finally checked out Malkin’s aptly named Hot Air program for the first time. Today’s episode is a disgusting “salute” to “rightwing warrior” Ann Coulter. I take this to mean Malkin is just okey-dokey with Ann’s “raghead” remarks, her defamation of 9/11 widows, her suggestion that Rep. Murtha should be murdered, her “joke” about poisoning a Supreme Court Justice, etc. […]
June 16th, 2006 at 11:22 pmIt is funny Exley, I think all Republicans should commit suicide. It would certainly make the world a better place. You first, by the way.

June 17th, 2006 at 12:27 amCoulter: Let’s frag Murtha
She keeps sinking to new depths…
Coulter is nothing more than a rabid media whore. It’s embarrassing to see reputable news-programs granting her airtime to peddle her trash.
June 17th, 2006 at 8:42 amExley, the blog you are referring to:
The statement is basically lacking in class, and is in fact objectionable. There is no real excusing it, it was a scummy thing to say.
HOWEVER
Ann Coulter’s statements are not only excused but actively defended and championed by the Right. She makes a lot of money by making those statements, and she makes them on a far larger platform then a blog. While this guy is obviously stating his own opinions on the matter, and that slur certainly does not represent what I as a liberal believe in, he has not been invited onto Leno to repeat his statements.
The Alan Hevesi quote you so often repeat, has already been appologised for. The guy making the quote actually believed he had done wrong, and said sorry for it. There is a world of difference between that, and the general Rightwing’s argument “But They Did It Too.” The BTDIT argument is one fo the prime reasons why we on the left, don’t feel the right ever takes responsibility for its own actions, and have the moral maturity of four year olds to boot.
June 17th, 2006 at 9:13 amGood posts……Not much to add here. All reasonable thinking people know coulter is just another whore selling a book or radio station. Just like rove, bush, cheney, rummy, rice, limbaugh, pat robertson and all the extreme right their vitral spewing keeps them in the for front of news junkies and force feeding the american public. I remember years ago when the bathroom books were a big deal, same thing here. All garbage and no substance..Shoot , these people need some humor at least . None of them have the guts to back up their blather..Coulter and this entire bunch need a good jail cell to cool of in………Blessings
June 17th, 2006 at 10:40 amignore coulter and she will crawl back under her rock. her comments are meant to make people mad, get her press coverage, and help sell her latest book.
forget teaching history or science in school. they need to start teaching PR, marketing and advertising theory classes. that way people will be able to see through the weak minded bullshit that’s only purpose is to remove money from their pockets.
do you really think coulter, hannity, limbaugh, or any other right wing hate talkers would continue their “jobs” if they were not getting paid. i think not.
June 18th, 2006 at 3:26 amAbout 130 years ago, it was said that “the only good Indian is the one that is dead”. Fast forward to 2006, and substitute Republican for Indian.
June 18th, 2006 at 9:03 amPoor ann, She has to stoop as low as attacking 9/11 widows to sell her latest book. The pathetic and caustic thing will probably die of lead poisening some day. Who would be surprised? Not I.
June 19th, 2006 at 8:21 amI refuse to believe that a hypocrite like this, a disgrace to her sex, her country and her God is for real.
Her self centered head is so far up her own ass that she can neither see nor think anything but her own hate, even self hate. One day she will find that there is a loving God, but, even He will be “p—-d”.
And then, who she have to be there for her? Certainly, not me nor many others. She may not be totally lost, but that is her own business. We are all sinners aren’t we, but she takes the hate cake.

June 20th, 2006 at 1:27 pmOF COURSE MURTHA MUST DIE.
BRAVO TO ANNE FOR STATING THE OBVIOUS.
August 3rd, 2006 at 11:36 pm[…] This isn’t the first time the media has rewarded Coulter for her hate speech. After she attacked the 9/11 victims, NBC milked the controversy, repeatedly providing a forum for her to talk about it. Similarly, she was given repeated opportunities to discuss her comments suggesting Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) should be murdered. […]
