America is a country, not a flag. While I concede that it is impossible to deny the symbolic nature of the flag, the current trend of overt flag-waving is not true patriotism. Rather, this crosses the line into jingoism. In order to be a responsible patriot, we must stand by the fundamental beliefs this country stands for. While I do not feel flag burning is a necessary act for one to assert his or her patriotism, this inability to separate the symbol from its antecedent reveals a huge problem with the popular opinion of Americans. This process of sanctifying the flag carries over into the political realm: our government officials are representatives of our nation, raising the question as to whether or not one can be patriotic and still question the government. In much the same way, we are brainwashed by the epithet "Support Our Troops" as a means of justification for war. Yes, we should support our troops, but this does not mean we must support the war they are fighting. I understand that this may seem disconnected from the original argument about flag burning, but it's important to realize that when we start blindly praising these representative images of America, we lose sight of the fundamental American values. America was not founded on a flag, but rather on an ideal of freedom. How can we possibily justify sacrificing an expression of freedom in order to preserve a symbol of freedom? Moreover, while the physical manifestation of the flag can be destroyed by flame, the image can never be stolen from us.

On a side note, I do have issues with the fact that the production of American flags is often outsourced to nations famous for civil and human rights abuses, simply for economic reason. Can a flag truly represent American freedom when it has been made with sweat shop labor? Then again, with current trends in government, our freedoms have been reduced largely to free-market capitalism, and condemnations of Bush's crimes on humanity ring just as loudly as those of any other head-of-state. Perhaps burning the flag is the only way to truly display the state America is in...

Dear Mr. Burgett:

I am sorry you seem bitter, but how can you call the American Flag a 'stupid piece of cloth'?

The US flag represents our country. It symbolizes all of the things that make this the greatest country in the world. Google the name Mike Christian, a former POW at the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam War, and find out what the US Flag means to him.

I still say that anyone who 'wants to be able to burn the flag' even if they never intend to do it, especiallly during a time of war, should be charged with treason, among other things.
