“Because the U.S. government did not have a plan in place,

my nephew has paid for it with his life,” said the uncle of Kristian Menchaca, one of the missing U.S. soldiers found dead in Iraq today. On Power Line, John Hinderaker is already shamelessly attacking Menchaca’s uncle.

So this guy’s loved one had to die before he said something, how selfish so many people are. How many loved ones are out there just keeping thier mouths shut until something happens?

  2. Drew Mackenzie says:

    Not related to the uncle.

    But he’s right.

  3. Evil Spaniard says:

Typical. Those right wing pundits hate everyone who had any loss in Iraq and don’t shut up. Cindy Sheehan, Fernando Suarez del Solar, now Menchaca’s uncle… All of them are less valuable than their own pie hole.

  4. Marie says:

SOBs like Hinderaker show their false support for killed soldiers when the bereaved families justify the death with their support for W’s war through tear-filled eyes. But if the grief-stricken blame Bush and his illegal war with no plan to end it, those families are on the receiving end of the bile from the likes of Hinderaker and Coulter and their ilk.
The SOBs show their true colors in these times, and that anyone listens to them or agrees with them is shows an astonishing lack of compassion, as well as repulsive, blind partisanship.

  5. Jules says:

I have to agree with For Truth. The Reagans did not come out in favor of stem cell research until Ronnie had alzheimers.

I cannot fault you Truth; however, for those that have…They have been placed behind the curtain or under the rug…Or worse, thrown under the Right Wing bus of anti-democracy!

The TRUE question is would they have been inerviewed “if” their loved ones were still alive? There were MANY with Cndy Sheehan, and yet you only saw BUSH with the parents that agreed with his view!

The charge of how the REPUBS have damaged and degraded the DEMOCRATIC system of Government I held so much respect for is sickening and saddening! And more saddening is we have IDIOTS defending them under that same cloak of DEMOCRACY!

God Bless His Family and loved ones for their suffering!

  13. Lila Michis says:

It is extremely common for human beings to come to awareness of injustice only through their own personal experience. Those who are naturally against violence and oppression are the lucky ones to have that as a part of their basic nature. We should understand and embrace those who wake up to the reality of wrongs no matter how that occurs. We need to have compassion for people like Menchaca’a uncle, welcome him to the right side and save our disdain for the the murdering exploiters like Bush co. and Big Oil rather than heaping it on those who do end up seeing the light.

  14. stewart says:

and thus it begins, first Mz Sheehan, then a few more, now this uncle who speaks of a good nephew, how is it that three troopers were left to guard a retractable bridge at a river crossing? Think about it? The equipment worth a million dollars? A crossing valuable enough to place the bridge and we save money by understaffing a check point? Checkpoint? Theres more cops with more fire power at a DUI check point on a saturday night at the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC for crying it out loud!!!!

  15. Evil Spaniard says:

Well, in fact I think there were 3 Hummers, but the terrorists used an attack elsewhere as a bait to make two of them go to inspect. Then, they attacked the lonely Hummer. Then, they killed the driver only. Was a carefully dessigned attack to take live prisoners.

  16. Marie says:

#1 and #5, you aare both right, unfortunately. If there was a military draft in place this occupation would have been over before it started. Too few people have family members in this war; the rest of us have been told to go shopping.

  17. WC says:

So this guy’s loved one had to die before he said something, how selfish so many people are. How many loved ones are out there just keeping thier mouths shut until something happens?

    Comment by For Truth — June 20, 2006 @ 2:34 pm

Plenty, I’d guess. But the sad thing is, in the end does it really matter? As it is with most people in this country and the policies of our government, whether it’s war or taxes or warrantless wiretapping, most people will not bother to speak out or get involved as long as the policy decisions don’t affect them personally.

And Jules brings up a good point in #8 about the stem cell issue and the Reagans, but that didn’t sway Bush either.

We all know the quickest way to end the senseless deaths. The Iraqi government has asked the U.S. government, on more than one occasion, for a withdrawal plan and Bush has refused, even after saying we would leave if the Iraqis asked us to.

The deaths will continue. Bush doesn’t give a damn. We’re not going anywhere.

  18. IraqVet says:

    Draft? Are you kidding?

If it were REPUBLICANS whose children were called, then I bet this war would be over in an instant. But since it is the children of hard working citizens who don’t have a lot of money to bribe BUSH and his cronies, then I guess the war is the right thing to do…

    Draft? Mwahahahahahahahaha

    BUSH IS AN IDIOT!

  19. Briseadh na Faire says:

This is just one guy’s opinion. Ok, one lawyer’s opinion. Surely the rest of the Administration isn’t so callous.

On second thought, maybe they are:

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow was asked this afternoon if President Bush had any reaction to the death toll for U.S. troops in Iraq reaching 2,500. Snow responded: “It’s a number.”

    My condolences to the families.

  20. marcus robinson says:

We must all remember what Tony Snow, the spokemen for Geaorge Bush and the White House, said about the number of dead soldiers in Iraq, “It just a number”. Bush doesn’t give a damn about these men and women. Republicans are without question, UNAMERICAN!!!!!

  21. Michael McCullough says:

    Bush doesn’t give a damn.

Bush gives a damn that 9/11 doesn’t happen again. That’s more than I can say for you guys who hide your heads in the sand and pretend that the worldwide threat of Islamofascism doesn’t exist. Clinton didn’t give a damn all the times we were attacked in the 1990s and we paid for it with 9/11.

  22. For Truth says:

Good point #13, Lila Michis. Well taken.

  23. Barfly says:

Mike, terrorism was low on Bush’s priorty radar before 9/11. Sandy Berger told Condi about Osama, but they were too busy enacting their precious conservative agenda to pay much attention. Bringing Clinton into it is sadly misdirected. Perhaps someday we will learn which members of PNAC (besides Cheney) were present at those secret meetings he had with the various oil and gas interests shartly after coming into office.

  24. Dummy Crasher says:

I’m going to getting in contact with these soldiers and give them a piece of my mind.
They should be ashamed of themselves.
It’s about time people stopped saying things like “they’re only doing their jobs”.

If it was my my job to occupy a country and brutally oppress its people I’d say, “no thanks”. I’d do a little time at Colchester military prison and be out!

Why do we absolve soldiers of responsability, they’ve got their own minds.
Obviously the big criminal is Blair, but these people do their share of crimes.

There is not even one accurate count of how many civilians have died in the afgan and Iraqi occupations.
Why? because nobody cares. They’re just imperial subjects.
Sometimes I wish I hadn’t studied the history of the British Empire. Nothing changes. same old story…

  25. IraqVet says:

    #21…

PLEASE…PLEASE…PLEASE…Take those worn-out talking points somewhere else will ya? IRAQ had NOTHING to do with 9/11!!! Is your common sense that dense? Or do you just believe everything an IDIOT like George Bush tells you?

    Osama Bin Laden…Afghanistan

Terrorists a part of his organization! Saddam, NOTHING to do with Iraq, but HATED Bush and we go to war because???

    Get the point?

So before you comment with that useless diatribe of deceit and ignorance, I suggest you do some research!

What a vicious and cruel point to make. Good thing you aren’t being crushed between your hopes and fears, eh, For Truth? For Shame.

“I have to agree with For Truth. The Reagans did not come out in favor of stem cell research until Ronnie had alzheimers. Too many times people wait until they are personally affected before they will speak up.” ==Jules

That’s the human race you’re talking about Jules. Almost all people will not take a risk if they can avoid it. But there is no decent comparison between the rich Reagan’s and the disease that struck them in their old age, and an uncle who lost a nephew because a warcriminal deployed our soldiers in insufficient strength and armor to protect their lives.

Before you crawl up on your dais and judge the human race for its foibles, why don’t YOU do something other than flap your gums?

As for this endless ‘Nothing Changes’ meme, get with the changes that change and HAVE TO BE DEFENDED. This is no longer 1840, or 1940. We have a UN Charter, which Bush broke; we have Geneva and Hague Conventions, which Bush broke. We have a Genocide Convention, which Reagan signed, and Bush broke. We have a U.S. statute barring torture, specifically including during time of war or national emergency, which Bush broke. We have laws against deployment of chemical weapons, which Bush broke. We have laws against lying to Congress, which Bush broke.

And so on. What is different is that our laws have progressed, and we ARE a nation of laws. So quit with this exhausted Leftist cant about ‘nothing changes,’ and get with fighting for the JUSTICE guaranteed by our laws.

Justice, under our laws. It’s our right as Americans, and it outweighs any dime novel history that would-be Leftists read in order to convince themselves that they weightlessly exist in Great Sweep of Time and Revolution, as opposed to in a country that has suffered a coup, which must be fought, by all legal means, without stinting on efforts, until justice is served.

  30. IraqVet says:

    Dummy Crasher,
Although I respect your stance on the war, your comments towards soldiers are without merit. In war, some bad things happen (Haditha), yet the majority of the soldiers are doing the job the signed up to do…

BUSH is their Commander-in-Chief and regardless of their personal feelings they are obligated to follow the orders they were given. It is easy to sit and type about going to prison, but if you feel that strongly then why aren’t you in prison for storming the White House in protest?

If your conviction is that strong, then LEAD THE WAY! The soldiers deserve our gratitude and respect for fighting a war that should not have been started. If you want to blame someone BLAME BUSH for the 2500+ that died for NO REASON! I was there, and I speak out about his dishonesty and immoral acts as often as I can! I HONESTLY HATE the man (BUSH) and what he stands for!

The families deserve our coldolences, respect, and gratitude regardless of their affiliation. I will give them that much and more, because I hope that I represent the more sane portion of the country, which understands that the REPUBLICAN party (Specifically THIS Administration) has LIED, CHEATED, STOLE, and DESTROYED the basic freedoms that these soldiers are charged to protect.

Let me clear this out for you. You did not win WWII. Russians did, they defeated germans, you just got up there in Berlin along with brits so russians could not seize all Europe!!! And, you won over Japan, I agree, but it was due to Fermi, Szilard, Oppenheimer and other FOREIGN scientists who built the first nuke. In fact, if Germans would not have thrown the greatest scientists at the time, you would be just like Guatemala.

  41. Briseadh na Faire says:

When is enough enough? Can someone tell me how to get this revolution going because I do not know where to start! Comment by Jules — June 20, 2006 @ 4:28 pm

When enough jobs are sent out of the country causing long-term unemployment of over 30%

When enough capital is sent out of the country by the super-wealthy to undermine even the service economy.

When casualties from overseas conflicts number tens of thousands per week.

When what is left of the working class can no longer sustain the tax burden due to the tax relief granted the wealth.

When the demands of the war effort necessitate the elimination of the social safety net provided by welfare, food stamps, unemployment insurance, disability insurance and social security.

When public education becomes merely a place to warehouse children until they are either processed into the prisons or the military.

When the costs of the endless war on terror hit everyone personally, and the people become too tired, too hungry, and too oppressed by their own government to fear the nebulous threat of “terrorists.”

Then will come the Harvest. The law of Karma will be fulfilled.

At that time will come One who is selfless and loving.

The rest is unknowable at this time. But Karma will have its way.

  42. Paul in LA says:

“ut if so many people are against this war then why is it when I go to anti-war rallies only ten people show up?” == Jules

Generally? Poor method of alerting people to the event. But, where do you live that you get such small turnout?

In Los Angeles, we have turned out 10,000+ over and over. Smaller rallies reach 2,000.

Weekly vigils, of course, are much smaller, 20 or so. Factor against that small number, the fact that these vigils have gone on fifty times a year for four years. A city like Los Angeles has something like twenty or thirty such vigils.

But that totally misconceives the value of protest, or its purpose.

    • Expression of Outrage, which keeps free speech open.

    • Water the Grassroots, which feeds the spirit of people ALREADY against the Bush regime and his illegal war.

Those are the two primary purposes. You cannot expect people to light their hair on fire, since there is no evidence that such would stop the cruelty and treason. What is the real enemy to fascist coups is a strong populace that refuses to be stampeded. Regular street protest, even in small numbers, accomplishes that locally. It is also the case that even a small protest, even one or two people, makes ripples of free speech that can be profound indeed.

Don’t worry about numbers, and certainly don’t mistake low numbers for a lack of feeling in the passersby. The only thing that made protests so large in the 60s was the DRAFT. In absence of that kind of goad, the public will generally try to solve their problems at the polls. Too bad they don’t yet know in sufficient numbers that the elections are being stolen.

My local newstand has reordered the Rolling Stone issue with RFK Jr.s excellent expose on vote-fraud three times. They sell a lot of magazines, but they have rarely or never seen an issue of RS that popular. If you haven’t gotten a copy, you may still be able to!

WELL WORTH the $4. It’s the June 15th issue, #1002.

Proof, please. And I don’t mean your opinion.

    I am troubled, too.

I am troubled by continued support of a president who thumbs his nose at Congress and fights any oversight of his presidency. I do believe the founding fathers would have approved of this behavior. Prove me wrong.

I am troubled by a vice president who thinks that his boss doesn’t have enough power.

I am troubled by a president who states he has the right to disobey 750 laws he otherwise signs.

I am troubled that anyone who dares question the president or his policies is labeled a traitor.

I am troubled that a vice president shoots someone in the face and refuses to be interviewed by local police until the next day, claiming national security as his reason.

I am troubled by a president who repeatedly talks to the public about ways we are tracking terrorists and the methods involved, yet claims national security is in danger when a reporter does the same thing.

I am troubled by a congress who views flag burning and gay marriage as the two most important issues facing this country.

I am troubled by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist stating on worldwide television that “she certainly seems to respond to visual stimuli” and then days later stating he didn’t say that.

I am troubled by a Secretary of Defense who tells the world in March 2003 that “we know where the WMDs are” yet 3 years later states he didn’t say that.

I am troubled that the same Sec. of Defense says in 2003 he doubts the Iraq war will last more than 6 months, and then recently states he did not make any attempt to predict how long the war would last.

I am troubled by a president who characterizes anyone against the Iraqi war as “disturbed.”

I am troubled by a president who on national TV laughs at the mention of low approval ratings for his handling of the Iraq war and then states “I’m not laughing.”

I am troubled by a president who smiles virtually anytime he speaks about the deaths of our troops.

I am troubled by a vice president who tells America that they will surely be attacked again by terrorists if a Democrat is elected president.

I am troubled by a president who says we will leave Iraq if the new government asks us to, and then refuses to give them a timeline for withdrawal when they request it.

And this just scratches the surface.

Yes, I did! See, no mention was made of my losses in Katrina. Nothing was said about the soldiers (who returned dead) that I trained in Ft. Sill…The TODAY show has no need of soldiers returned under the cloak of secrecy, and no matter how much I yelled there was no solace for the lack of attention given to my family and friends because of their status…

I am dealing with my loss of loved ones and friends. The families and I know that we cannot count on DEMS or REPUBS for help…I am an INDEPENDENT voter and look for ways to improve the lives of those left behind by this Government…

I knew the risks of war and was lucky tio get out alive and intact…But I know the horrors of war and know that THIS war will not make us heroes…Only villains to the Islamic community, and I also understand that BUSH has put us all in danger with his IGNORANCE!

I call it like I see it. Unless you have been in war, no one knows the stress those guys are under. You can ONLY hope that they make the right decision, but if they don’t then they have to be charged…Still, it is hypocritical, because RUINSFELD and BUSH are the BIGGEST CRIMINALS and they are getting away with murder???

I am sorry for your losses. I cant even imagine it. And you are right, probably I am speaking very lightly about war whereas I have not been involved in one, luckily. I am truly sorry that still people are being sent to war for no good reasons, like you. I am guessing you were in Iraq in 1991, defending Kuwait´s oil. I maybe look patronizing here, behind a digital screen, but let me tell you this: I would not hesitate, not for a moment to defend my family against any agressor, or my freedom. That doesnt mean I have to look my freedom or my family´s security in another country which happens to be the second largest oil reservoir. I would fight for what I think is right, not for fake patriotism.
