Associated Press: “The Republican-controlled Senate refused Wednesday to raise the minimum wage, rejecting an election-year proposal from Democrats for the first increase in nearly a decade. The vote was 52-46, eight short of the 60 needed.”
The bastards didn’t have any problem with their own pay increase. It’s time for the whole damn bunch to be in the unemployment lines. After they get out of Leavenworth!
Every year of the Bush administration, the number of people living in poverty gets greater. Must be some reason related to Bush. How any working person or poor person or anyone who knows or loves a poor or working person vote GOP, I’ll never know.
Compassionate conservatism – only if the compassion is a raise to yourself I guess. The social issues voting record for the Repugs basically state “Keep the stupid, stupid and and the poor, poor.”
You all need to read Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. Minimum wage increases causes employers to divert more money to capital because labor is so expensive. That means: more unemployment. Also, if there is a minimum wage, employers are better able to discriminate based on race. Look at the 1948 employment figures, young teen black males were employed just as much as white teen males. After the minimum wage increased, that percentage widened as thousands of low-skilled workers were layed off in the economics boom years of the fifties. Additionally, MOST minimum wage earners don’t support a family.
Cheap SOB’s. There’s no compassion in the Republican party (ain’t no such thing as a compassionate conservative). All I see are a bunch of rich Grinches and Scrooges (I guess that’s a little repetitive).

$2.10 over 3 years is nothing more to employers than a slight shrinkage of their profit margin, for which they will find some a way to recover . What YOU speak of, is a minimum wage that would be in line with the cost of living and on par with past minimum wages in terms of real dollars. Like a,say,$10.00 an hour and a bill asking for $12.00. Now go kick the nearest begger,vent-person,homeless or what ever, wasted sperm.
Yes Marie, every year it has been a little over $3,000.00 and the minimum wage zero increase…Care to guess what the cost of living increase was for an old person on S.S. $24.00 a month…Well that was mine….And I’m like the rest, loosing ground….Oh well!
Their entire mind set is “we got our’s to hell with the rest of you.” ….
In my view of society, there are four classes of people – those who make stuff (production line workers, cooks and farmers.), those who create stuff (inventors, engineers, scientists and craftsmen.), those who are called industrial tycoons (But are more parasitic on society than a plague.), and politicians who ignore the needs of their constituents and society before granting benevolent favors on tycoons in order to fuel pure greed.
Since the Congress has basically frozen the minimum wage for past 8 years, therefore every member of the House and Senate must have their wage/salary slashed to the amount it was in 1998! That means a cut from $168,500 to about $140,000 for House members! All future pay raises must be frozen until the min wage is raised to $7.25 an hour for all 50 states in America!

Is it any wonder that the middle class is disappearing? The “Congress” is given a 2% COLA every year and have yet to vote it down. What makes them think the rest of us couldn’t use a few more dollars in our pockets. As it stands now, the minimum wage is not even a living wage. I say, we put a stop to Congress granting themselves salary increases and furthermore, that they can not spend more on their election than what the average person makes on minimum wage.
I want to know how republicans live with themselves? Tax breaks to the wealthy, slashing estate taxes and spending like there is no tomorrow. . .

June 21st, 2006 at 2:45 pmThis right after a report came out stating that most Congressional members do not use their pay as a Congress person as their primary income.
So, what did they do?
Voted themselves a $3,300 raise two days later.
If it isn’t their primary income, then why the need for a big old raise, while at the same time keeping American workers in poverty.
No taxation without representation.
Stop using our taxes to give yourselves raises without representing the American people and their struggle with poverty.
Jerks.

June 21st, 2006 at 2:52 pmNow, if the Dems were smart, they would start a grass roots movement to mobilize minimum wage workers in every state to vote this November

June 21st, 2006 at 3:10 pmHello? Red states? How’s the inheritance tax working out for you? Good. You’ll need that money for gas, so you can keep that 2nd job at Sonic.
June 21st, 2006 at 4:19 pmBill Gant,
What do you think the entire purpose of this bill was? ;)
June 21st, 2006 at 4:29 pmNothing in the Constitution about a cloture supermajority.
June 21st, 2006 at 4:46 pmMeanwhile, the Senate has voted themselves enough in pay raises in the last decade for 6 families on minimum wage and do less than ever.
