ThinkFast AM: June 21, 2006

The two missing U.S. soldiers found yesterday were beheaded and showed signs of being “brutally tortured before their death.” Their remains are being sent to the U.S. for DNA testing, suggesting they “had been wounded or mutilated beyond recognition.”

The recently appointed head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection spoke out against a wall being built along the Mexican border. “I don’t support, I don’t believe the administration supports a wall,” Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said yesterday. “It’s not practical.

The House will vote this week on an estate tax “compromise” bill from Rep. Bill Thomas (R-CA). “To lure Democratic senators from Washington state and Arkansas, Thomas included a lucrative tax break for the timber industry, pushing the total cost of the bill to nearly $280 billion.”

Not exactly a free press in Afghanistan: “In a coordinated action this week,” Afghan intelligence operatives delivered an “unsigned letter” to TV stations and newspapers “ordering journalists to report more favorable news about the government.”

After revelations that AT&T set up a secret room in San Francisco that provided the National Security Agency with “full access to its customers’ phone calls,” Salon now reveals that AT&T has a “more integral” secret room in its Bridgeton, MO facility. “Although they work for AT&T, they’re actually doing a job for the government,” said a former AT&T employee.

Jack Abramoff’s lawyer, Abbe D. Lowell, is calling for stricter ethics reform “that goes beyond what Congress is willing to even debate.”

The AP has obtained the FBI files on playwright Arthur Miller, a “longtime liberal who opposed the Vietnam War” and “supported civil rights.” (In 1956, Miller famously refused to name names before Joseph McCarthy’s House Un-American Activities Committee.) One FBI report said Miller’s “religious” wedding ceremony was a “cover up” since he was a “cultural front man” for the secular Communist Party.

The conviction of Abramoff-linked former Bush official David Safavian yesterday “could embolden federal prosecutors to seek additional indictments against cronies of Abramoff.” Said one analyst, “This is the type of conviction that tends to loosen tongues.”

More media consolidation on the horizon? The FCC today “will embark on a new attempt to revamp media ownership restrictions,” with FCC Chairman Kevin Martin joining large media conglomerates in pushing for increased consolidation. (Just in time, The Nation has updated their graph of the National Entertainment State.)

Conservative alumni at colleges such as Dartmouth, Hamilton, and Colgate University, are attempting to take over alumni association boards and are pulling in right-wing bloggers to help them out.

And finally: Doctors are investigating the deadly effects of World Cup fever. “An exciting match can cause fans’ hearts to skip not one beat, but several, leading to a rather worrying incidence of cardiac arrest among soccer die-hards.” In an ongoing study on the phenomenon, German heart attack victims “are asked precisely what they were doing at the time of the attack, whether they were following football on the radio or television, or even watching the pundits after the game.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Anyone up early enough to see Bush speak in Vienna? I only caught the last few minutes where a reporter asked Bush why he thinks he’s failed so miserable to gain the hearts, minds, and souls of the Europeans in relation to the war (only 14% approve there).

He recited the exact same answer we Americans have heard over and over. That he believes he is doing the right thing. That he doesn’t govern based on polls. And that time will prove he was right. Worst of all though, he claimed America had a transparent democracy, and we debate things in the open. The man who is at the head of the most SECRETIVE presidency in history is claiming transparency, and open debate?!?

Then, (I believe it was) Wolfgang Schuessel decided to say that it was absurd to think that what Bush was doing was dangerous because the same kind of actions were taken by America to free Germany. Unbelievable. That he thinks Bush has actual freedom on his mind like past presidents is just astounding. I was hoping SOMEONE would have had the guts to call out Bush on this televised around the world event.

I’ve begun to wonder about this. It’s their job to ask the tough questions and yet no one is. Why? I cannot come to any ratioal conclusion except – fear.

Isn’t that why people don’t do what they are supposed to – fear of the consequences?

I certainly am not happy that this happend to an American. I feel for the families of these boys and am horrified at what they went through. Having said that, Americans cannot take the moral high ground here. NO torture is acceptable. NONE. We have American sodier’s on trial for murder and an investigation into Haditha. How can you not expect it to come back to haunt us?

  13. PLC (Patriotic Liberal Christian) says:

#7 Unbelievable What consequences might they be fearing? Being fired from the “liberal media” (which is likely to managed by conservative power)? Probably. Being shut off from access to politicians? Probably. Maybe we need a true liberal/progressive “work protection program” for media people who face such consequences and need a safe place to work and make a living. And we need to make the shunning of access (think Helen Thomas) a story in itself.

[...] Good news folks, the days of backroom deals seem to be giving way to telecom “secret rooms.”  What exactly are these?  Well it looks like the good folks at AT&T have two rooms, one in San Fran and we are just now learning of another in Bridgeton, Missouri, that allow the glorious National Security Agency to monitor and track AT&T’s customer’s phone calls.  Doesn’t everyone feel more secure?  I am thrilled that private companies are doing the investigative work for the federal government.  WHAT IS GOING ON?  Are people really ok with the idea giving the federal government such easy access to this information?  Is this really neccessary to “win” the war on terror?  Can anyone answer these questions with a straight face?  I am starting to have a better understanding of how ignorance is bliss.   [link] [...]

That makes sense. We are mostly forced to be 100% employed at all times in this country, and I could see ho wthe fear of losing a job or credentials from a career you’ve put your life into building would give pause to taking the risks. It fits.

George Bush is mental child – with his poor attitude and sense of entitlement. He’s very vindictive and we see what he did to Joe Wilson for speaking the truth. Which he’s gotten away with.

I think an amnesty program would be great. But, I think there are loopholes there to get at people – or their spouses or something else. So it might help. I guess we find out by trying it… :)

I also think we need to find some independently wealthy journalists. I mean, isn’t that why George Soros created AP and TP? Nothing to fear? I still think he needs his own network… :)

They need to keep those profits to offset the days and years of warless peacetime. Show some compassion for billionaires; support the repeal of the inheritance tax. here’s a sample – more at the link

AT&T has issued an updated privacy policy that takes effect Friday. The changes are significant because they appear to give the telecom giant more latitude when it comes to sharing customers’ personal data with government officials.

The new policy says that AT&T — not customers — owns customers’ confidential info and can use it “to protect its legitimate business interests, safeguard others, or respond to legal process.”

The policy also indicates that AT&T will track the viewing habits of customers of its new video service — something that cable and satellite providers are prohibited from doing.

Moreover, AT&T (formerly known as SBC) is requiring customers to agree to its updated privacy policy as a condition for service — a new move that legal experts say will reduce customers’ recourse for any future data sharing with government authorities or others.

    …..

“While your account information may be personal to you, these records constitute business records that are owned by AT&T,” the new policy declares. “As such, AT&T may disclose such records to protect its legitimate business interests, safeguard others, or respond to legal process.”

It says the company “may disclose your information in response to subpoenas, court orders, or other legal process,” omitting the earlier language about such processes being “required and/or permitted by law.”

The new policy states that AT&T “may also use your information in order to investigate, prevent or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud (or) situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person” — conditions that would appear to embrace any terror-related circumstance.

Last week Steele launched his new video touting himself as an outsider, proclaiming “if you think Washington works just fine, I’m not your candidate.” Well, publicly he will dress himself in moderate clothes, but if you follow the money you find otherwise. He is 100% connected with DC insiders, taking money directly from the main gears that keep the Republican political machine moving. Steele has held a secret capitol hill fundraiser with Karl Rove, a closed door fundraiser with Cheney in April, and pretended to snub Bush by avoiding him in Baltimore in May.

The two soldiers that were mutilated beyond recognition is actually good news for the neocon US government.

It will galvanize support for the troops, two grieving families will gain support from friends and neighbors, and, above all, increases in the funding for the ‘war’ in Iraq.

Billionaire arms dealers will gain more business with the US gov. Politicians gain political capital too.

It’s a win-win situation. War economies cause suffering and grief, but the gains for rich people increase. Everybody should be happy about that.

Worship the rich. Forget about ‘thou shalt not kill’ and ‘thou shalt not covet,’ they’re just a couple of obsolete commandments from a fictitious god. A golden calf offers much more.

We should all be shouting for more war and lots of it.

Is that too gruesome of a sarcastic remark?

  77. Jules says:

Joe – that was priceless. Isn’t it cute how she believes she is “busting us up?”

What does that mean anyway? I always thought it meant to make someone laugh. Is she attempting humor?

    63. Grading papers?? WTF – a teacher? Yeah I believe that. Your spelling is atrocious.

  79. Democrat Soldier says:

#73 – Oh, you poor child. You just swig that kool-aide and don’t even bother to ask why you’re doing it or what’s in it. Your poor little victim.

Sweetie, since you’re so busy “grading papers”, I’ll make this easy for you to understand.

“Good” conservatives don’t have to hate Pres. Bush, nor does everyone at this site “hate” Pres. Bush.

“Good” conservatives look at Pres. Bush without the “You must love the leader!” glasses the neo-cons want everyone to wear. They say things like “Hey, isn’t fiscal responsibility a conservative quality? Why isn’t Pres. Bush even considering the money he’s hemorrhaged since he was elected? Why is Pres. Bush ignoring the average citizen in favor of special rights and pro-corporate policies? Why does Pres. Bush want to shred the constitution?”

I do not hate Pres. Bush, but I do hate many of the things the man has done to destroy the constitution, engage in multiple illegal activities, and to bankrupt the nation both fiscally and morally.

There now, sweetie! I’m sure that will help you as you turn away from the lemming behavior that neo-cons require of their faithful and to use your mind for something other than keeping your head from caving in.

  80. PLC (Patriotic Liberal Christian) says:

#71 + # 72 That’s how we got into this ridiculous Iraq War. “Amy’s” posts are exactly parallel to the “debate” we had about how to handle Saddam and the terrorists. “You’re either with us or you’re against us”, agree or be “Anti-American”, seek and destroy. We who disagree have got to SHOUT, separately and in unison, to be heard.

To Amy: I’ve said what I need to, you haven’t. I’m done.

  81. amy says:

He is a good guy. Called himself Right of Center. Definitely was. Not a neocon.

  86. Jules says:

Anyway…to get back on the track amy is attempting to derail….Rachel Maddow “the predictor” predicted on Air America this morning that there will be more indictments coming down by the end of July. I hate to get my hopes up, but hey, with this administration they could not be much lower!

  87. Democrat Soldier says:

Of course, the job of “I’m a neo-con whore” and “I just repeat the talking points and don’t question my orders” is a natural fit for you, so no need for those appointments.

By the way, since you’re more than willing to sell your soul for a shiny new ideology that you refuse to question, I’ve got a really nice bridge to sell you!

  88. Jay Randal says:

What happened to the 2 soldiers is very tragic, but nobody seems to notice that their deaths are being used by the Pentagon to claim Al-Qaeda goons did it, which has a smell to it of some kind of staged event, like the beheading of Nick Berg supposedly by al-Zarqawi himself > the supposed new bogeyman replacement for Zarqawi now beheads 2 soldiers? Very convenient for the Bush Regime, but who actually beheaded them remains a mystery or a conspiracy perhaps?

  92. Jules says:

Navy Vet… I wanted to see it but could only stay awake for a portion of it. I wake up at 4:45 so my eyes shut pretty early.

Just the part I saw made my skin crawl. Does anyone know if and/or when it will be repeated?

  93. Democrat Soldier says:

#92 – Riiiiggghhhttttt. And Pres. Bush is loved the world over, and the budget is in the black, and Usama bin Laden is on the run, and there’s no place like home!

My God, woman! Do you actually listen to the drivel that escapes your mouth?

If you truly feel that you “got one up on me”, then have I got a bridge to sell you! It’s really nice, and it’s going cheap!

  94. Joe Sixpack says:

#79. Busting us up is kind of a republican term these days. Far from a progressive defination of laughing, it means to be like GWB: the great divider.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but at least amy did get the term “twit” correct. That’s me, of course: Webster’s dictionary gives this defination to twit: “To taunt, ridicule, or tease, especially for embarrassing mistakes or faults.”

Of course, it also says the British Slang term of twit refers to “an idiot.” I wonder if she thinks we are all slang types?

  95. Jules says:

  96. Democrat Soldier says:

Navy Vet, do you know if Frontline has a transcript of that show available? I’d like to peruse it between giving trolls the red-a$$.

  97. PLC (Patriotic Liberal Christian) says:

#88 Jules I hope Ms. Maddow is correct. I’m surviving here in Ohio under Bob Ney’s reign. Somehow, I mistakenly got on his supporter list and have been mailed some of his ridiculous campaign mail. I also sent him an e-mail against the proposed Constitutional Amendment to “protect” marriage and got a form letter in response that actually touted how he supported the amendment, proving that neither he nor his staff actually read the content of my e-mail. This guy is a poster child for this narrow-minded version of conservatism. We need to find out if he’s truly corrupt before November or I’m afraid he could still be re-elected.

  98. Democrat Soldier says:

Little Miss Amy has delusions of adequacy, and must raise her opinion of herself by (sadly attempting) to tear others down.

I doubt it’s true. Amy is a shrill harpy that cannot win arguments and continually claims she “wins” after failing miserably. Sort of like Pres. Bush. ;-)

“Right between the I’s” always writes in bold and is full of his won “rightness”.

Well, now that you mention it, if you take away the bold, Little Miss Amy does sound mysteriously like “Right between the I’s”.

I quickly put up my “Flush Rush!” And “Rush lies all the time!” clingers on the back window of my truck and slowly passed this guy. I drove next to him for a few miles and I saw out my rear view window as he read my message, and then he tried to catch up. After a few more miles, I let him catch up to me and started to yell and holler and give me the finger.

I waved back and smiled, and that made him madder.

It’s a great feeling to twist the tail on the monkeys!

Jules, personally I think that Rep. Ney is going to go down faster than Rush Limbaugh on a pile of pills. He’s too tainted by the stench of the neo-cons and the true “conservative” voters are starting to realize how much he’s screwed them.

I like the fact that we don’t have a “master” to kow-tow to, unlike the neo-cons. I also agree that we can’t let trolls distract us. However, I think we have to follow them in their arguments or rantings long enough to let them trip themselves up, point out their hypocrisy and inconsistency, and then tie what they have posted back to the thread. I am a member of the council of the naval mutiny

How a wretched British sailor became a citizen mutineer
Pressed into service to carry powder I was loyal to the crack of the whip
It I starved on the streets of Bristol, I starved worse on a British ship

Red is the colour of the new republic
Blue is the colour of the sea
White is the colour of my innocence
    Not surrender to your mercy

I was woken from my misery by the words of Thomas Paine
On my barren soil they fell like the sweetest drops of rain
Red is the colour of the new republic
Blue is the colour of the sea
While is the colour of my innocence
    Not surrender to your mercy
So in the spring of the year we took the fleet
Every cask and cannon and compass sheet
And we flew a Jacobean flag to give us heart
While Pitt stood helpless we were waiting for Bonaparte

Red is the colour of the new republic
Blue is the colour of the sea
White is the colour of my innocence
    Not surrender to your mercy

All you soldiers, all you sailors, all you labourers of the land
All you beggars, all you builders, all you come here to watch me hang
To the masters we are the rabble, we are the ’swinish multitude’
But we can re-arrange the colours of the red and the white and the blue

Red is the colour of the new republic

    Bush’s Baghdad Palace
    by Nicholas von Hoffman

Among the many secrets the American government cannot keep, one of its biggest (104 acres) and most expensive ($592 million) is the American Embassy being built in Baghdad. Surrounded by fifteen-foot-thick walls, almost as large as the Vatican on a scale comparable to the Mall of America, to which it seems to have a certain spiritual affinity, this is no simple object to hide.

So you think the Bush Administration is planning on leaving Iraq? Read on.

  161. unbelievable says:

The American Empire has a new palace. Hitler and Nero would surely approve…

I love how one of their storis for why the liberated Iraq is to free the people from a tyrant who killed people and mis-spent their money. Seems that the Pot doesn’t even know it’s black…

#159 – While there were a number of Pres. Clinton’s policies with which I disagreed, he was a much better President than the current clown we’ve got stinking up the White House.

As I said in another post, we should repeal the 22nd Amendment, and let Pres. Bush and Fmr. Pres. Clinton run in 2008. I know who would win. It would really twist the tails of the monkeys when Pres. Bush lost by an overwhelming margin!

  163. Jules says:

Dem – that is the reason the repugs hate him so much.

There was a discussion concerning Blackwell in Ohio. I was refering to the Ohio GOP candidate for Blackwell. I say that because it has always been my experience as a 20 something black male and I watch how black conservatives have been treated. I wasn’t speaking of you personally.

    #167 joneser

I didn’t think it was me but I also didn’t see any discussion about Blackwell, which I would have noticed because I’m an Ohioan supporting his opponent, Ted Strickland. For my own learning, how have you seen black conservatives treated and what might Blackwell experience?

166 – When I hear the comments about the Republicans “stealing” elections, I’m lead to believe the left is upset because they’re no longer the only one’s doing that!. Q. How many Democrats does it take to elect someone to office? As many as needed, regardless of whether they’re alive, dead, living in the area, felons, illegal aliens, etc…..

I hope you’re not still hung up on the 2000 election, or do you think the 2004 race was “stolen” too?

  172. unbelievable says:

    rickd…

2000 was given to Bush by the Supreme Court. Gore won the popular vote, and from a BBC (independent) recount Florida as well.

Go read the Rolling Stone article on 2004.

I’m not a Conspiracy Theorist (just ask the 9//11 gang), but I do believe that foul play occured. Enough for Bush to never have been president and possibly to have not been a second term president. Karl Rove is a sociopath who needs to win at any costs and is known for playing dirty.

Also, before you go there – I’m not a Democrat. I thnk they are also corrupt, just currently not as much.
