Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) are hyping a document that describes degraded, pre-1991 munitions that were already acknowledged by the White House’s Iraq Survey Group and dismissed.
The Defense Department has already knocked the story down. But on Fox this is big news, proving that Saddam Hussein had WMD, just as the administration claimed.
The question is, if this information is so significant, why would the administration keep it under wraps? Alan Colmes asked Fox News Military Analyst Thomas McInerery that question last night. McInerery explained that the administration was complicit in a multinational cover-up intended to protect Russia, China and France. Watch it:
Transcript:
MCINERNEY: Well, Alan, I think it’s significant from the point of view is it shows there’s a lot more information out there, and probably more important is, is why has the administration not made this public beforehand?
COLMES: Why wouldn’t they?
MCINERNEY: Well, if you want, my personal opinion is, I think the fact is that the Russians moved large stocks out in the fall of 2002. You heard what General Sada said. They went into three locations into Syria and one location in the Bekka Valley.
And if you get in there and if you found those weapons and found the precursors, the fingerprints would go back to Russia, China and France. Now, those are the three countries that had the most conventional weapon sales to Saddam Hussein. We’ve done an inventory on that, so that’s public. And I believe they were complicit, so I don’t think the administration wants to trash three of the five members of this Security Council.

The inmates are truly running the asylum.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:28 amThese guys can not be serious. I just wish I could get what they are smoking.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:33 amThey’re like little yappy dogs biting at our ankles. Just give ‘em a kick…
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:34 amMust be something in the cool-aid all these nutjobs drink.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:34 amThis is a complete Orwellian lie. U.S. fingerprints are all over weapons sales to Iraq. VP Bush and Rumsfel could tell you more. This is an election story.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:34 amLike they’ve never trashed any security council member before. Is John Bolton going to back up that claim?
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:36 amNice. The Fox News “analyst” simply gets to make up facts.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:36 amIt pretty obvious:
If these weapons were of any value, we would have had a big press conference by the white house, declaring that we found the WMD!!! We were right but no such thing happened, which suggests two possibilities:
1. These weapons were of no value
2. They were the weapons Rummy gave to saddam.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:37 amReally. How is it that Phaux never mentions that the US sold lots of munitions to Iraq back when they were fighting Iran? I can’t claim it’s true, but I’ve read we sold them the precursers to make some of the chemical munitions in the late 80’s.
Whaddaya expect from Murdock? Honesty?
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:43 amIs beating on France like their ace in the hole? I don’t get the right wing obsession with France.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:43 amI cannot figure out if this is simple desperation or part of the overall Big Lie techniques used by this administration and its mouthpieces.
Unfortunately I think it is the latter.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:46 amInteresting how everyone has forgotten about the 7 tons of high explosives the U.S. military let disappear from a supposedly guarded munitions facility soon after the invasion.
June 22nd, 2006 at 10:47 am7 tons of plastic expl’s has created massive destuction in the last three years, one explosion at a time………….
Santorum and Hoekstra. Someone forgot to flush—-two turds in the same bowl.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the last time they found an artillery shell that old with mustard gas in it, the gas was so degraded that when the two US soldiers who found it breathed in the fumes, only one even got a little sick to his stomach.
Even if there are 300 out of the 500 old shells that are not inert and might still have a whiff of gas of sorts, that means we have spent one billion dollars for each one.
A BILLION Dollars for each old, rusted, wornout shell that can’t even be fired safely.

Comment by onthefence — June 22, 2006 @ 10:43 am
Well, to use the exact same reasoning that the wingnuts use to explain why other countries hate us? It would be jealousy. They envy the French way of life and quality of existence. They wish they were French, basically.
I’ve been to France on several occasions and they are rather nice people, so as long as you don’t interrupt them and demand they speak English to you. Which, you figure, people who want to make English the national language and complain about those who live here without speaking it would understand. You’d think…
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:00 amSo Fox would rather turn on BushCheney than admit they were fooled by them? Interesting to know where Fox’s priorities and loyalties are.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:02 amThe Fox story is complete hogwash.
From U.S. complicity in Saddam’s crimes against humanity:
According to declassified documents mentioned in “The Washington Post Weekly Edition†(1/6-12/2003), Iraq was already using chemical weapons on an “almost daily basis” when Donald Rumsfeld met with Saddam Hussein in 1983, consolidating the U.S.-Iraq military alliance.
Subsequently, the Pentagon supplied logistical and military support; U.S. banks provided billions of dollars in credits; and the C.I.A., using a Chilean conduit, increased Saddam’s supply of cluster bombs. U.S. companies also supplied steel tubes and chemical substances, the types of material for which the Security Council is now searching.
As late as 1989 and 1990, according to a report from U.S. representative Dennis Kucinich (Democrat, Ohio), U.S. companies, under permits from the first Bush administration, sent mustard gas materials, live cultures for bacteriological research, to Iraq. U.S. companies helped Iraq build a chemical weapons factory, and then shipped Hussein a West Nile virus, hydrogen cyanide precursors, and parts for a new nuclear plant.

“War” is not over yet. I bet they are even more expensive than that…
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:02 amC’mon. Even if. 2,500 dead for 500 degraded WMD. How is that even close to justifying this disaster of a policy!?
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:04 amThe right wings logic on this one still makes me laugh.
The wingnuts actually believe this so try to imagine it.
You’re Saddam Hussein and you know the US is about to attack you. So what you do is you make sure all of your most powerful weapons are snuck out of the country. You need to save them for some other important war you’re going to fight? You don’t want to actually use them to fight the Americans what you want to do is sneak your most powerful weapons out of the country so you can go live in a hole for a while waiting for the moment when they find you so you can pop out and laugh “HA! no WMDs!”
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:05 amIf I was a republican i’d be thinking….Hey, we can lie all we want and no one in the media or the democratic party is gonna call us on it. Heck, the dems wont even call us on the things we are truely guilty of!
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:06 amWatch the news for an hour today and you will see exactly what I mean. Time is running out for the dems to grow a pair.
We live in a democratic society where a collective wisdom is necessary not to be fooled by authoritarian interests. We allow FOXNEWS to spew its propaganda because our secular liberalism allows people in a free society to bring to bear what they deem of value to such collective wisdom. It is obvious from this stunt by Sen. Santorum and his like-minded colleague that our bodypolitik is a bit sick. Commissioned authorities are now being second guessed simply because their conclusions don’t support this authoritarian President and his regime of supporters. If FOXNEWS keeps this story alive, I believe we all can put its propaganda machine right up there with the accomplishments of Dr. Frankenstein.
Oh, and it now seems that Senator Santorum and FOXNEWS both know better the time of day than the rest of us non-believers even if we are all in agreement that it is noon. -Kevo
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:07 amBill Gant
If those weapons were of any value, Saddam would have used them. It wasn’t like the tough talk coming out of the US Army at the time was particularly stressing the “…or alive” part when they were talking about taking him “dead or alive.”
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:13 amSo today I was thinking in a twisted way of course (you must think twisted thoughts to deal with those nazi’s on the right..)
Any way isn’t The Wizard Of Oz somewhat like our administration.
Starring Bush as the Scarecrow. “if I only had a brain..”
Cheney as the “Tin Man”, looking for a heart, right after he’s done torturing some more people.
Rummy - as the cowardly lion. Well he’s seeking courage, any man can fight, it takes courage to stand for peace.
Condi - Well we all know she’s the wicked witch.
Those evil flying monkeys, are all of congress. Dems and Repuglickan.
Now what happened to Dorothy & Toto? Well when it took FEMA 4 days to respond after the Tornado, she was found dead.
Sadly there’s no one worthy of the Glinda The Good Witch role in Washington.
And it was about the same time Wizard of Oz came out (1939), that the republicans actually had a good idea for moving this country forward and keeping it a world leader. Instead we see “Stay the course” of those same failing ideas like Flag burning, tinkle down economics, gay marriage.
Maybe someone with some photo-shop skills could doctor up some old Movie Posters for Wizard of Oz :)
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:13 amThe general is one of those on Faux almost every day crowing about how well things are going in Iraq! How an retired general could sit there day after day supporting what he must know to be a trumped up war of choice is beyond me! One wonders how he ever became a general with that mind set? Even PFCs can sometimes cull facts from fiction.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:15 am#12, Actually, it was 500 tons just at the al Qaa Qaa facility alone.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:20 amThing is the GOP brainwashed faithful will believe this, and say look we were right, when is the left going to apologize.

June 22nd, 2006 at 11:20 amThis story smells like turdblossom. No matter how much perfume they put on turdblossom he’s always going to smell like a turd. The closer we get to the elections the more your going to see turdblossom trying to pull rabbits out of his hat, don’t be fooled.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:22 amJohn Murtha is Glinda… :)
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:23 amThe reason the adminstration keeps a low profile on this story is not to protect Russia, France, et. al. but to protect Rummy. What do you think he and Sadam were shaking hands about in that famous photo? We sold or allowed to be sold those pre 1991 WMD’s for him to use against Iran - which he did. The Admin does not want the American public to know we have lost 2,500 plus American lives to find WMDs we sold them in the first place.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:28 am#24 - I’ve actually seen this one already.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:28 amIf I was a republican i’d be thinking….Hey, we can lie all we want and no one in the media or the democratic party is gonna call us on it. Heck, the dems wont even call us on the things we are truely guilty of!…..Time is running out for the dems to grow a pair.
Comment by Vance
Oh, I don’t know, Vance. Hillary is going to introduce a flag buring amendment, Kennedy is still in bed with McCain and wringing his hands over the “undocumented worker” issue, while Kerry is doing every thing he can to try and upstage Murtha’s great idea for Iraq with a half-baked Iraqi pull out policy of his own.
What I like the best is when Pelosi and Reid finally get around to their talking points (usually about 3 or 4 days after the issue in dead). JEEEZEUS!!!! Talk about a weak team heading up the party. And grow a pair? You do realize that between the two of them they have one visable gonad each. And it is very small.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:30 amOh man, this is WILD! Does this man realize what he is saying? That BushCo ‘knew’ that the WMD had been smuggled out of Iraq, MONTHS before the invasion began? But they went on with the plan, telling us what great danger we were in. Saddam refused to disarm, they have no choice, sending our troops to die, in order to ‘cover’ for Russia, China, and France? In other words, they knew there were no WMD’s in Iraq, but invaded anyway, to not blow their big secret. Splendid idea. Well Tony Snow, tell us, is it true? Oh man.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:33 amCyra pinned the tale on the donkey. McInerney is as dumb as they come. For more fun O’Reilly/McInerney stuff I posted this clip of them “helping the enemy”

June 22nd, 2006 at 11:38 amOne thing I don’t get, if they new where the weapons were pre-war, and the claim is the WMD’s were smuggled out. wouldn’t you be watching sites with WMD’s like a snake watching a crippled mouse. How could the Saddam have smuggled all that stuff out of the country without the US knowing?
If you say this is what were worried about, and then say we know where they are, how can you lose them?
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:38 amWho’s the Wizard? Who is behind the curtain pulling all the strings?
Have you figured it out yet?
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:41 amLies with repurcussions that this could and should bring are a mainstay of Faux news. Crap like this would not have been tolerated under the Nixon administration and Fox would have had it’s license pulled.
June 22nd, 2006 at 11:44 amYeah, we were protecting China, Russia & France….How could we have missed that, it’s so obvious…….yeah…..It’s all clear to me now. Rationale #2 for Iraq War is operative again. The war is justified. Hold your fire, liberals!
What? The White House already admitted it was wrong about WMD? I’ll wait and see what the ACTUAL White House says about this, ok????

June 22nd, 2006 at 12:14 pmThis story was reported pretty widely when they first found them. The sheels being found where they were and in the state they were (unusable ) actually showed that Saddam had been in complete compliance with the UN resolutions. that’s why the Administration swept them under the rug.
What even they seem to have underestimated is the ability of Of Fox News to spin even obvious facts form old news stories in to whatever they please. The Iraq war is horrible travesty that proves what kind of damage an Unchecked worlsd super power can inflict on humanity if it is allowed to build a military complex as large as the Us’s.
Here is waht you will not find on FOX news. A brookings institute report on the US progress in Iraq.
http://www.brookings.edu/fp/saban/iraq/index.pdf
Minimum 38 000 civilian casualties. 2500 americans is a jingoistic self centered figure that ignores the fact that we are murdering the people of another nation at an alarming rate.
And nobody knows why.
June 22nd, 2006 at 12:15 pmwhat does it take to qualify something as a weapon of MASS destruction? wasn’t condy “mushroom cloud” rice making it sound like something bigger?
maybe one standard is that if it’s capable of less destruction than the munitions that were stolen because the u.s. hadn’t thought to secure it after the invasion, it doesn’t count.
June 22nd, 2006 at 12:16 pmRemember when Lyndon Larouche would claim that Queen Elizabeth was behind the illegal drug trade? Way back when the crazies were held up as crazies? Ah, good times!

June 22nd, 2006 at 12:37 pmTracy, does that mean people who push English-only in this country are also lazy and snobbish, or are the French-only crowd in France as principled and patriotic as America’s heartland? Which is it?
June 22nd, 2006 at 12:37 pm#48
Lazy and snobbish for you speaking English to them (yes I too have been to France),
What would you do if a French person in this country spoke to you in French, have him arrested and sent to Gitmo?
rioting because they don’t want to have to compete with the rest of the world for jobs…yeah right!
June 22nd, 2006 at 12:42 pmNobody’s real happy about it here either, except you corporate-kleptocrat types. The rioting will start soon enough. Just a heads-up.
Apparently, we invaded Iraq in order to dig up 10 year old unusable weapons buried in the desert. No one can argue again that it wasn’t worthwhile. Now it all makes sense.
June 22nd, 2006 at 12:43 pmMy wife was wondering when the WMD’s would be “planted”.

Most of the posters here seem to be so consumed with living in a bubble of elite induced hate that they could care less about the truth or their brother.

That is one of the most absurd things any person could say. They speak French in France (just like you all whine that we speak English here)..
It isn’t hard to learn a couple of words. I speak French and for the most part, didn’t get to speak it much, because as soon as they heard my accent, they started speaking English to me. Hardly either lazy or snobbish. They don’t have to speak English because YOU demand it. Who the hell are you to make such a judgment of a country where you neither pay the taxes nor fly the flag?
When in Rome…
rioting because they don’t want to have to compete with the rest of the world for jobs…yeah right!

Especially disgusting is John Kerry. He is a LIAR. He had no intentions of finishing the job even though he said so on the campaign trail. Judd - you’ll be in for the shock of your life come fall. Democrats will actually lose seats. Trust me. No one believes in them because the only thing they can agree on is a hatred for the opposition.

June 22nd, 2006 at 1:55 pmI’ll post this again: the brand new member of the consulting board of the Fox’s media group, appointed directly by Ruppert Murdoch, is far righter José MarÃa Aznar, FORMER Spaniard President and staunch ally of Bush in the runup to the Iraq war. I say FORMER because he was ousted when the Spaniard people came to vote.
Also, the first non-WASP member of the board. I guess his “merits” are enough.
Bye, bye, Aznar, and sorry for you all.
June 22nd, 2006 at 1:57 pm#73- offensive one, You must remember that GWB himself said that the outcome of Iraq would be decided by other administrations. Guess that makes him a LIAR as well, according to your standards. And he also LIED about getting Osama bin Laden, dead, or alive. And John Kerry is not the President, George Bush IS. He is responsible for EVERYTHING that has happened in Iraq. It was his idea to invade, no matter what. And he did. Anything else is irrelevant to that fact, no matter how much you hate it.
June 22nd, 2006 at 2:16 pmIf you believe the almost wholly-uncorroborated tales of General Sada, I can sell you the proverbial oceanfront lot in Arizona. The fact that Bush’s unrepentent minions continue to believe this BS demonstrates that Arizona is a hot real estate market right now.

BTW, Kerry is a LIAR why exactly? Some job that he had no intention of finishing or soomething? Did you go into a coma on 11/2/04 and just wake up? The Rethugs stole the election from him at about 10:30 that night. FYI

June 22nd, 2006 at 3:05 pmMCINERNEY: Well, if you want, my personal opinion is, I think the fact is that the Russians moved large stocks out in the fall of 2002. Soon they’ll be putting it in our water, our food — even children’s ice cream. Can you believe that? Children’s ice cream. It’s all part of the vast communist conspiracy to pollute our precious bodily fluids!
June 22nd, 2006 at 3:27 pmI am hearing buzz around the media that the government didn’t tell us about Iraq’s massive WMD’s they had and we found because alot of it was exported out of the country to Syria by RUSSIA, FRANCE, and CHINA.
Wouldn’t be surprising since Russia and France were getting rich off the Oil for Scam I mean food program. I guess Bush cared more about Diplomatic relations with those countries then you guys gave him credit for.
Besides, if we actually have found more WMD’s that they haven’t released yet, just think of it as your October suprise :).

did you watch Dr. Strangelove recently?
June 22nd, 2006 at 3:32 pm#73: “You want to lose. You love seeing soldiers die.”
Actually, what we would love to see is YOU die in Iraq. Not that there’s much chance of that.
June 22nd, 2006 at 3:33 pm“did you watch Dr. Strangelove recently?”
Whot needs Terry Southern and Stanley Kubrick? We’ve got Fox News.

What an a$$hole.

Whenever I take a crap, I watch Fox News and Rush Limbaugh — go circling down the hole in the bottom of the toilet bowl.
June 22nd, 2006 at 3:52 pmWhy are we bitching here? We (Bush and the USA) have avenged 9/11, ridded Iraq of WMD’s and an evil dictator, inserted a democracy in Afghanistan, made friends with the Chinese, secured the borders, stopped the proliferation of nucular bombs, cut everybody’s taxes, liberated the public school systems, ushered in fiscal constraint, cleansed the WhiteHouse of debauchery, restored voting rights, fixed the Social Security mess, restored peace throughout the mid-East, made friends with all those foraners, cleaned up Enron and WallStreet, saved and rebuilt New Orleans, made Guvment smaller, started a mission to Mars, accomplished our mission in Iraq in 60 days, secured the ports, brought fair and balanced reporting to the media, made friends with South American’s got the shuttle program up and running smooth, balanced the budget, stopped the queers from ruining marriage, saved Terry Shiavo, restored the Judicial Branch, protect civil rights, stopped corruption, improved auto fuel standards, and finally got access to ANWAR for all to enjoy. Whew, what more could you ask for? All is well in the land of milk and honey; stop complaining.

June 22nd, 2006 at 4:29 pmUS did not win WWII. Stop saying that. Russians did win. They got all the way to Berlin after they almost loose in Stalingrad. You dropped two nukes over civilian population whereas Pearl Harbor was a military facility (which of course I do not celebrate). Those nukes were made by FOREIGN scientists: Szilard, Oppenheimer, Fermi, etc. Most of them, just as Einstein left Germany after Hitler took power. So, if it was not for Hitler, you would not have the brilliance of many men used for such nefarious acts.
God doesnt exist. Grow up and live freely.
It’s official: Hannity has regurgitated his own bile!

June 22nd, 2006 at 4:37 pmAnd they have labeled liberals as moonbats — these guys are bat-shit crazy!!
June 22nd, 2006 at 5:09 pmSantorum, Hoekstra, McInerery - their ranks are growing and will continue to do so as their party implodes upon itself.
you should also mention what, to me, was the high point of the coverage of this ’story,’ on “hannity & colmes:” sean hannity was almost trembling with excitement over this revelation, saying something along the line of “i’ve been praying for this day,” and then, later, he and ann coulter nearly high-fived each other.. they were so, so happy. it was really a fascinating insight into the deepening angst these two charlatans must have been feeling for so long. and then, at the end of the segment, when alan colmes established, again, that a pentagon spokesman had said, essentially, that the munitions were so old, they posed a threat to no one, hannity sneered something like “yeah, and i’d like to see how many liberals would like to keep them in their garage.”
tonight’s show ought to be something.

June 22nd, 2006 at 5:40 pmThe President and Congressional Republicans have committed to reducing our troop strength in Iraq … “we will stand down as the Iraqi’s stand upâ€. So, how do we describe the Republican position?
“Cut and cower
“Cut and cringe
“Cut and squat
“Cut and settle
“Cut and tarry
“Cut and bide
“Cut and ‘hang out’ †?
“Cut and bend over
“Cut and duck
“Cut and zilch
“Cut and assume the position
“Cut and occupy
“Cut and pump oil

June 22nd, 2006 at 5:53 pmRight, because the administration is so reluctant to reveal information that would be beneficial to them and their domestic policies. It’s like omerta with these people.

[…] ThinkProgress’ video was much more intriguing as I’m sure I’ll be hearing these little nuggets spewed at me by my less-than-informed Republican colleagues. MCINERNEY: Well, Alan, I think it’s significant from the point of view is it shows there’s a lot more information out there, and probably more important is, is why has the administration not made this public beforehand? […]
June 22nd, 2006 at 7:03 pm[…] And of course, Fox News just couldn’t resist featuring an “expert” who claimed that the story has been covered up by the Department of Defense, in order to protect Russia, China, and France. […]

June 22nd, 2006 at 9:35 pmMorgan,
the article from the washington times indicates that the French sold spare parts, and missles to Saddam. The only chemical mentioned is a chinese chemical meant to make solid rocket fuels. It does mention Dual use components, but never specifies what components were sold.
The second article comes from what we would both agree is a highly partisan website. I will trust there article as soon as you trust stuff from micheal moore

June 23rd, 2006 at 11:16 amColmes’ next question should have been: “If weapons were found and the Bush Administration covered it up, causing our troops to stay in Iraq longer than necessary, isn’t that an IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE?”
June 23rd, 2006 at 11:56 am“You selfish pigs would have lost WWII if you were alive back then. Thank God you weren’t.”
Read history. The Republicans gutted defense budgets every time they got into power; even Eisenhower. They latched onto defense spending during Viet Nam as a political tool cum springboard to return to power.
And it was the Republicans who opposed the U.S.’s entry into WWII, until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Then, like the isolationist American Communists who became interventionists after Germany attacked Russia, the Repos jumped in to support WWII while attacking FDR. Did anyone call them isolationist traitors back then? Should have.
“History is prophecy,” said M. Twain (far better than Santayana’s inelegant aphorism).
June 23rd, 2006 at 2:21 pmPS: Point of clarification, Eisenhower, infaturated with the Repos’ demand for a balanced budget, cut defense spending to fund construction of the Interstate Highway System.
Listen, the rest of the country can’t help it that liberals are stupid, uninformed and have role models like Michael Moore and Howard Dean. Stop shooting the messenger and READ THE EVIDENCE. No WONDER you people don’t control ANY branch of govt. in the United States LOL. Most Americans laugh at you every day!
