Coulter Derides Call For New Iraq Strategy, Endorses Lieberman Approach»

Right-wing pundit Ann Coulter appeared on Fox News this afternoon to discuss the war in Iraq. Coulter derided the lawmakers who have called for a redeployment strategy from Iraq, questioning whether “FDR [had] to deal with this during World War II.” She argued that the only type of politician she “admires” is someone like Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) because he “does want to defend America and fight the war on terrorism.” Lieberman has argued “our troops must stay” in Iraq. Watch it.

Full transcript:

CAVUTO: Is this an extreme view – that the war is actually going to be a positive issue, I’m paraphrasing here, for Republicans in November.

COULTER: Oh sure, of course — because Democrats can’t be trusted with national security. I mean, we see it in these frivolous proposals to have a timeline, a plan, “what’s the plan?” Can you imagine FDR having to deal with this during World War II? “What’s our schedule? When do we pullout? Can we have a timeline? What’s your plan, what’s your plan, what’s your plan?”

CAVUTO: What did you make of Hillary Clinton saying we can’t have an open-ended policy but by the same token we have to have a sense of closure for this?

COULTER: Umm, yes. There is a clear position. There is something to run on.

CAVUTO: So you would admire more at least the politician that says a timetable to get out than going back and forth?

COULTER: No. I would admire a politician, not as much as basically your run of the mill garden-variety Republican, but as far as Democrats go like Lieberman, who apparently does want to defend America and fight the war on terrorism. He is the one facing a primary fight.

CAVUTO: You know, there is talk about him maybe bolting to a third party. The seeds are there for a third party movement. Do you buy that?

COULTER: I think he should come all the way and become a Republican. He wouldn’t be our best Republican but at left he’d fit in with the party that wants to defend the country.

  1. Barfly Says:

When they pull intellectually-barren comparisons to FDR out of their butts, you know they have nothing else. Ironic Ann’s simply an apologist for war criminals, nothing more.

  2. Badmoodman Says:

Coulter derided the lawmakers who have called for a redeployment strategy from Iraq - - Ann, you didn’t bring the funny. I rely on you for the funny. Bring it, Ann, bring it.

  3. For Truth Says:

    Badmoodman,

Now that Ann is going more mainstream, she won’t be bringing the “funny”. It’s all about her career.

  4. For Truth Says:

The constant having to move her hair out of her face is not of star material, who’s betting on a hairstyle change for Ann soon?

  5. squegeeboo Says:

The real question, is why would Ann undermine lieberman by stating support for him when he’s already facing a tough primary. Is there an actual chance for the republican candidate to beat the guy running against liberman?

  6. Zookeeper Says:

    #5 - For Truth,

No hairstyle change in that girl’s future. She likes doing that. Cavuto likes it too. And Hannity. Ugh.

Since I put no stock whatsoever in anything that spews out of her mouth, I think I’ll just be a catty woman and concentrate on her looks. She’s got a nice ghoul look going on today, and she probably ought to check those roots — now that she’s peddling her ass, I mean book.

  7. profmarcus Says:

O.M.G…! if little binge-and-purge orphan annie is placing her boo-tay on the joementum bandwagon, maybe i ought to reconsider my lamont support…

  8. Redleg Says:

Fox News must be desperate to have Ann Coulter as a military consultant. Jeebus, the right-wingers sure love her don’t they?

  9. Above the Clouds Says:

Lieberman must have just shit when he heard his name come out of Coulter’s mouth. Hey Joe, in for a penny–in for a pound. If you want to act and vote like a Republican–you get Coulter thrown in for nothing.

Remember: Bush and his Administration really are incompetent. And the American public sees it now. Iraq is his mess and no amount of dividing Democrats will make the Iraq sitaution go away.

  10. Frag Kerry Says:

Coulter is the best! She’s playing the Dems for the fools they are. A Lieberman defeat would expose the Dems for the militant anti-war party that they are.

  11. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    #7 Zookeeper,

I agree, quite ghoulish today (more so than most). But, just out of curiosity, why does everyone unquestioningly refer to Ann Coulter as a female? I mean, that Adam’s Apple on her is bigger than most females’. And if she really is “totally female”, why is her e-mail address tom@anncoulter.com? Kind of strange if you ask me. (Yes, trolls, nobody asked me.) Also, I find it hard to believe that this person has anything resembling a maternal instinct.

  12. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    “militant anti-war party”
    Comment by Frag Kerry — June 22, 2006 @ 5:36 pm

And just what the hell does that mean? Militant and anti-war? That makes no sense.

  13. thinkaboutit Says:

militant anti-war party? really now FK, how can there be a militant anti-war party. And you really think Ann Coultergiest is the one to expose anything? it must hurt to be you.

  14. rickd Says:

I’ve noticed that when the left has nothing intelligent to say, they resort to name calling. I’d think that by now, if you can log onto lists like these, you’d be a bit more mature.

  15. Above the Clouds Says:

Since we are talking about bat-shit crazy, did Santorum find any more WMD today? Maybe he can help find the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairie or any specific details about what damage occurs to my or anyone’s marriage when two people of the same sex marry.

  16. bob Says:

This is just his usual backwash.

The cons attack FDR as a liberal until they remember he fought a war and won. They seem to think that the two don’t go together. What they don’t understand is that it’s not all about ideology - it’s about competence.

FDR was a competent leader - GWB is incompetent in almost every endeavor. FDR selected competent people and gave them the tools to do their jobs. GWB selects people loyal to him and his ideology, without regard for their competency, and lets them screw up their jobs.

If FDR performed as badly as GWB, he would have been severly criticized and would have deserved it. Germany and Japan would have won that war by now. Three years ago we attacked a country far less dangerous than either of those two and we’re still floundering around, no plan, no goal, no success.

Britain rolled through Iraq/Mesopotamia as a side show in both of the World Wars, and still managed to defeat the larger enemies. It’s all about competence.

  17. Calm, Flaccid Insurgency of '95 Says:

Who gives a shit? Can’t we stick to a position on this woman? Jesus Christ.

  18. Skeptic Says:

If Ann Coulter is for it, I am against!! Just kidding. But she is hardly a realiable expert on any sort of foreign policy, and I think everything else she has said has been mean spirited, vicious and wrong. So why should her opinion give credence to anything at all.
Liebermann is picking up some very strange allies.

  19. Quadrajet Says:

That’s funny rickd, talking about the left having nothing intelligent to say and resorting to name calling on a thread about Coulter. You’re a hoot!

  20. madashell Says:

militant anti-war party now that’s original.

Rick go read a few of Mighty Aphrodites posts, ie all of them, and then get back to me about the name calling.

  22. Zookeeper Says:

Also, I find it hard to believe that this person has anything resembling a maternal instinct.
    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider

Wayne, I assume she is a woman because Keith Olbermann said he went to college with her, and trannies usually don’t finish up their “work” by that age. That’s all I base it on. We have two transgender people (man to woman) here in town (that I know of), and they’re both better looking than Coulter.

Not all women have a maternal instinct! My youngest sister doesn’t have children, and thank goodness, because she’d probably leave it on top of the car while she made sure her little doggies were safe and sound inside, and then happily drive away.

  23. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    rickd,

So you don’t think anyone from the right does this? How about this little exchange ovwer on the admin-hid-wmd thread?:

#76 - “….is far righter José María Aznar, FORMER Spaniard President and staunch ally of Bush in the runup to the Iraq war. I say FORMER because he was ousted when the Spaniard people came to vote.” - comment vy Evil Spaniard

******Dear Evil “Neutered” Spaniard - You are so right - Wimpy Spaniards were cowed and gave in to the demands of terrorists - I think those Madrid train bombings did the trick….

    Comment by mighty aphrodite — June 22, 2006 @ 5:27 pm

Still think only the left resorts to name-calling when we have nothing intelligent to say?

  24. Above the Clouds Says:

Bob–you’re right sbout competence–with Bush scrambling and groveling to get approval ratings above 40% (think about that–40%) he looks to clowns like Rove for “advice.” Remember the sage advice of Rove: what’s the best thing we can do to win the war on terror? Divide the country. “You’re either with us or with the terrorsits.”

Remember: Bush really is incompetent and he has bogged this nation down in an unending war of choice. And the American public sees it now.

  25. Zookeeper Says:

Ignore little ricky, he has admitted he just shows up here to mess with us, and derail the thread. Why bother on an Anne Coulter thread? Who knows why?

  26. Krazny Says:

I think that Bush would not have made it past swing shift manager at a taco bell if it wasn’t for his family connections. He would not have gone to Harvard and Yale without them.

  27. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    #24 Zookeeper,

You know I respect Keith Olbermann, but is it possible the change was made before he met Coulter? :)

Also, I did not mean to imply that all women have maternal instincts, only that Ann Coulter doesn’t. Neither does Jane, which is one of the many reasons we never had (or adopted or raised in any way) children. We both know we would have probably killed them by now. And, of course, that would mean getting the death penalty and you know how I am about that!

  28. Frag Kerry Says:

#26 - Come back to earth. Bush was at 46% when he beat Kerry and the GOP picked up four senate seats.

AND by militant anti-war, I mean anyone who does not agree with the far left’s philosophy on the war gets run through the mud. You people are truly a close-minded lot who HATE anyone who disagrees with your agenda of retreat and defeat. Thankfully, you are not in power.

  29. Ginger Winchester Says:

Should folks have praised Hitler for having a nice head of hair?
Coulter said we should invade all Muslim nations, kill their leaders, and force the populations to convert to Christianity.
Now,If I criticize that remark,is it not intelligent?

  31. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

You mean like the right has a attacked a 37 year decorated marine veteran because he does not agree with the far rights view on the war? Wake up to the hypocrisy you spew my friend.

  33. Krazny Says:

Or what about Max Cleland, the guy who lost his limbs in vietnam? The republicans showed a willingness to drag him through the mud. Even John McCain got the short end of the stick when it looked like he might get the party nomination in 2000. Push polls accerted he had a black love child.

Please clean up your own house before taking a dump in mine.

  34. DieNowForPeace Says:

Damn, damn, damn! At 44 years and counting, the old bag-o-bones is just 2 years too old to enlist.

  35. Frag Kerry Says:

Kranzy - I hate you more than you hate me. Trust me. But, it was you folks who started this invective war by holding President Bush to a different standard on Iraq. You had no problem letting Clinton bomb Iraq on the eve of impeachment in the name of WMD.

The only reason you should fear people like myself and Ann Coulter is because we are like you. We will get in the mud and we will fight your hateful attacks. But rest assured, in the end we will win. And we will push our agenda through in spite of all your kicking and screaming.

  36. Joe Sixpack Says:

I see Anorexic Ann is once again drawing on her wealth of military and political knowledge she has learned from the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Too bad her law degree doesn’t qualify her skinny ass for squat in military affairs.

Still, its nice of the bitch to suddenly be all for the US military. It wasn’t always so. In 1997 MSNBC fired Coulter after an exchange with Bobby Muller, president of the anti-war group Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, in which she said, “No wonder you guys lost.”

I wonder if that skank will be repeating those words to some Iraqi veteran in five or ten years for following the “stay the course” leadership of Bush, Cheney, and Rummy.

  37. Ho Chi Minh Says:

How would a man have maternal instincts? Annie doesn’t have them because “she” was not BORN female.

  38. Zookeeper Says:

#29 - You know I respect Keith Olbermann, but is it possible the change was made before he met Coulter? :)

KO knew her in college, presumably around the ages of 18-22. No doctor I know of will even talk to someone about changing sex until they are at least 18. Then they have to go through years of psychotherapy, and at least a year of living as the other gender. Then you have to start with the surgeries. KO was probably eyeballs deep in geeky sports stats books, but he probably would have noticed something like that. Although, now that I think of it, he’s too much of a gentleman to ever say so…

I want to stop thinking about this now. ;)

  39. Joe Sixpack Says:

  40. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Ah, conservatives. You gotta love ‘em, or else you would be just as hateful as they.

  41. Marie Says:

Does anyone listen to her any more, except for the entertainment of it?

  42. Krazny Says:

Dude it was the right and the 10 years they spent on the witch hunt that pissed off the left. You and people like you are the far bigger hypocrites then me. You complain I hold Bush to a differant standard well guess what dumshit, bush invaded the country, Clinton didn’t. I am glad you hate me, I hope you don’t sleep well at night, grinding your teeth hating me. Frankly I don’t hate you. I pity you, I think you are misguided, but I don’t hate you.

    peace

  43. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

#40 Maybe she skipped the psychotherapy? :)

You’re right. There are far too many less unpleasant things to think about.

Good night all. Going home to watch the re-broadcast of the Mets game so I can see David Wright’s two home runs (which will bring smiles to Jane’s face, which is really what I want to see.)

  44. Quadrajet Says:

This is just an internet rumor, but here it is for what its worth. Ann is originally a drag queen out of Key West. She found a ‘two for one’ sex change coupon from a clinic in a remote part of Mexico and booked travel south with MA. Unfortunately, neither of them read the fine print and didn’t realize that Adam’s apple shaving and chest hair removal where not included. Unfortunately, their efforts to recover damages have been thwarted by medical malpractice caps which they originally supported. Anger over the botched surgery, their inability to recover damages and post-op hormone issues has resulted in the two venomous hags we have before us now.

  45. Jon Says:

You’re fighting for a transient state that will never last.

  46. CLUBBER WORFEUS Says:

Hes about as strong as Alan Colmes.

  48. mighty aphrodite Says:

#25 - Dear Wayne - I stand corrected - the Spanish electorate voted out Jose Maria Aznar to show support for the poor, mis-understood Muslims who were only blowing up trains to demonstrate their displeasure about the “poor quality” of the Spanish train system. Frankly, I think their blowing up trains and mistakenly killing innocent Spaniards was just a teensy bit extreme. Their rail system seemed fine to me…..

About kids - really, patience and unselfishness are the key. You seem suitably maternal and Jane seems more than patient - but parenthood isn’t for everyone….

  49. dubya Says:

Please Ann. What does a World War that were the result of 2 contries invading their weak neighbours with a military force have to do with a powerful country who invaded a weak country…oh wait..I get it..you just dont know what you are talking about. Again.

  50. Retired Republican Soldier Says:

    Iraq isn’t even a war.

Its an occupation. There’s a huge differnence.

Its not a war if you’re the only army on the battlefield.

  53. Ron Says:

The army would make an exception for her and take her to join the ranks.

She should find out firsthand what it is really like over there in Iraq.

    It’s the only way.

Just another chickenhawk. She would be the first to ‘cut and run’ when the going would get tough.

I wonder if FDR had a problem with his supporters demanding tax cuts. I wonder if FDR had the same problem avoiding soldiers’ funerals and a shrinking coalition of the willing. I wonder how what kind of insurgency FDR had to deal with after the liberation of France. I wonder if FDR’s children partied in D.C. rather than enlisting and fighting.

What were we complaining about? This comparison of Bush to FDR is great!

  67. Krazny Says:

I have to disagree Robert, Marilyn Manson knows the what he says is bull, Ann believes the what she says. I have to say on a whole Marilyn Manson is saner then Ann Coulter. Or is it more sane?

I think that it is possible to be a good democrat and to be hawkish on Iraq. I believe that having people such as Murtha and Lieberman makes the democratic party rich. As of Ann Coulter, what she is trying to do is to make Lieberman unattractive, she has no idea what his ideas are for she doesn’t understand anything about policy.

  77. Kermit the Freedom Frog Says:

  79. Francis V. Scalzi Says:

Anything Coulter actually says about - - well, just about anything - - is a lot of blather designed to bring attention to herself and to keep her face before the (FOX NEWS) TV cameras. Nobody else wants her anymore. She has become FOX NEWS’s pet monkey, making meaningless, nasty noises that have become repetitious tedium. We may conclude that her ulterior motive in appearing so often on TV and her speechifying tours with her stupidities is to court favor, most recently, with Joe Lieberman. Her attempts to find a suitable boyfriend in Lieberman will certainly fall on barren ground since, after all, he is happily married and Jewish, besides. He has made that clear enough. Maybe Coulter, in her desperation to find love, hasn’t been paying attention. If FOX has any sense thay will drop her from their roster of “guests”. She’s becoming a liability: tedious, unattractive, and ultimately a BORE.

A little off topic, sorry, .. Coulter and Lieberman belong together. Remember he/she is selling her self and so is Lieberman, republicans all the way…Reich wing lock step over the cliff and drag the country along. Misery loves company and they both are miserable…..

Next I know how to help out our global warming problem and our country at the same time…..Limited photo ops and long winded, hot methane spewing politicians only allowed to spew their hate and speeches 15 minutes per week….All sides….No more allowing kill the messenger mud slinging from trolls on all sites……What do you think.?

One more note, no duplicate mindless postings…..And above all remember this is 2006…..bush has been in charge since 2000, the mistakes are this administrations…..If there are any good things to talk about that has been accomplished while bush has been in office we would like to know. That ofcourse does not include huge tax breaks to the most wealthy……

Like I said before for those who speed read and miss half the posts….Clinton is not the president now and has not been since January of 2000….FDR passed away a long time ago and we don’t need any history lessons unless they are relevent to preventing more of the botched present problems….

Ann, there’s a hypocrisy the size of your adam’s apple in you disgusting argument:

As far as I am concerned her name should never be uttered again, she should not be recognized, never have another interview or news(?) cast. ****Dear Jon - Such a sweet sentiment, but not grounded in reality. Progressives are some of the most cleverly vicious people on the planet - who can forget Juliette Malveaux asnd her clever death wish for Clarence Thomas?? The progressive platform is based on harmonious co-exitence with others - in reality it about an economic, and socio-political platform - in short - POWER….

Funny thing, Jon, when I evolved from a prog to a conservative, I lost many acquaintances - obviously they were not quite as open minded as you. The progs i come in contact with due to the type of work I do are generally very nice people. (And the few who know I am a conservative, are DISMAYED!!!! One actually said, “My gosh, Aphrodite, I thought you were smarter than THAT…” I laughed and told him apparently I wasn’t…..

She didn’t endorse his “approach”. She endorsed HIM and when on to invite him to become a Republican. I usually love TP, but this headline and the ensuing article make me think that there are TOO MANY Senators or Ex-Senators running around that office and they’re still in the mode of “Protect All Incumbants” from primary challenges. At what point do people stop worrying about keeping their jobs and start actually DOING their jobs?

Dear Jealous of Jeff - (BTW - that sounds like a personal problem to me.) You sure seem to know alot alot ETA to me. How about the Red Brigade? What do you know about ELF? But we all know that people who assume so much generally do so without much foundation….
So I guess when insurgents steal Iraqi uniforms and murder people in cold blood YOU assume those deaths were the responsibility of:
a.) Iraqi soldiers (they should have hung on to their uniforms with GREATER care.)
b.) US military (if WE weren’t over there, they could have a perfectly understood and unrestricted blood bath…)

Yet the mighty mouth, who is a self-described ‘open minded’ person, has just limited its open mind to one political group. Yet this same mouth also thinks conservatism means religion. In the mouths open mind there is only one religion and one political party. Yet this open-minded person wants poverty wages.

This open minded person thinks democracy, that one political party, comes from the end of a gun. That might makes right.

Ok cool. Then please put some of that rich money where your mouth is, and buy a soldier a helmet update kit.

The cost of the kit is only 99 dollars for the Navy\Air Force kit, and 71 dollars for the Marine kit.

Buying one of these kits will rush a helmet upgrade kit straight to a GI in the field. These kits make the helmet capable of withstanding a much greater blast, increase the likelyhood of deflecting a bullet, and KEEP the helmet itself from smashing against the soldiers heads due to a large shock event.

Regardless of whether you support the war or not this site, set up by Cher, is saving young American lives NOW.

    OPERATION HELMET

Do this MA, and I will look at you with new eyes.

  124. FLAVIUS `WORFEUS Says:

In fact everyone in here, if you haven’t done so already go buy a soldier a helmet upgrade kit.

Regardless of you position, I am sure you all can agree we can’t afford to wait for Congress to get off their asses and force the Pentagon to equip the troops with these.

The moment for that has already past.

Boots are on the ground now. So now is when the soldiers need these.

Buy one kit, and you have a soldiers back in a small way, everytime he goes out on patrol.

  125. FLAVIUS `WORFEUS Says:

And remember. Its not that all the soldiers can’t afford these kits, although many can’t.

Its that they don’t have the time or the information to get one. This makes sure that they get it. From what we’ve seen so far, everytime a soldier gets one of these kits in the mail, they just open it up and start putting it in their helmet.

Just like it was military issued. Which it oughta be.

No chance unless they rig our voting machines. Ned Lamont picked up the Former State Party Leader’s endorsement as well NOW, he even got a plug from the Green candidate for Senate. He’s on a roll and NoMoJoe isrunning scared.
This endorsement by the hag can only speed his retirement, but it’s nothing next to his performance today Leading the GOP charge against the Fiengold-Kerry ammendment! When, finally, the Democratic Party catches up to the electorate and calls for an end to the occupation, Hapless Joe Lie berman is the one that comes out on the wrong side, again.

we see it in these frivolous proposals to have a timeline, a plan, “what’s the plan?”

Um… having a plan is frivolous? So does that mean there is no plan? Or is it a secret plan?
Or do they just refuse to consider an end to the occupation? How many more years of this? How many more kids mutilated and killed?
Maybe, if they told US that plan, there’d be a revolution.

I have been to every state, except West Virginia. Not sure how we missed that one. I have also traveled to England, Spain and France. And of course, go to spend a lovely time in Kuwait and Iraq during Desert Storm. Didn’t change my beliefs one bit. Gave me some new ideas though.

Unlike many progs, I don’t view business (big or small) as evil - I’m sure you’re much more open minded than you appear in this last post….

Just like in the same post, you try and confuse big business with small business. Now, you know just as well as I do that I am talking about BIG business. I am talking about the telecos, big oil, big auto and the like. I work in a global company that is NOT considered big business. You know what I mean and are once again, trying to blur the line. I don’t. It goes against my beliefs.

Joe Lieberman cannot win in CT, if he was actually a full member of the Republican party, so instead he masquerades as a phony Democrat > call him a Trojan Horse Republican! His job is to damage the Democrats from within and he has done a sinister job of it too! He convinced VP Al Gore to chose him as Al’s running mate in 2000, but actually he was working behind the scenes, for Bush Junior, to screw Gore out of the presidency! Old Joe forced the inclusion of unpostmarked absentee ballots that arrived from overseas in Florida after the election day > those ballots were invalid, but Joe agreed with GOP to have them counted for Bush! He stabbed Gore in the back for 30 pieces of silver from the Bush family! Ever since 2000, he has done the bidding of the GOP and defended Bush’s Iraq fiasco debacle quagmire occupation!

  160. Professor Smartass Says:

Between the laughable Ms. Coulter, the democrats who don’t remember the damage done to their (my) party by the war-protesting progressives of the Vietnam era, and the vindictive rhetoric so many of those progressive direct at those democrats who differ from their (I hate to say it) radical point of view, it may well be the republicans can retain majorities in both houses of the Congress.

I am a lifelong democrat who also served on active duty in the military for over 30 years. Though called a warmonger by some progressives, my service was about preventing war if possible. I hope that the admonition of Teddy Roosevelt to “Speak softly but carry a big stick” is remembered by at least some of you. The military does have to fight wars in the name of “We the people” to whom they took a solemn oath of office when they pledged to “support, protect and defend” the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”.

When our nation–by definition a group person–commits to another nation or group of nations that they will do something as in a treaty, accord or compact ratified by the Senate of the United States, that agreement becomes the law of the land. When military personnel are sent in harms way in fulfilling such a pledge, how can the service they render on your behalf be less than honorable absent the commission of a heinous crime by an individual rendering such service. After all, the failure of a military man or woman to carry out a lawful order given to them by a superior is a federal crime punishible by fine, imprisonment or even death.

Let us remember that those now serving in our armed forces are volunteers who have signed a contract with the rest of us to do what OUR government calls on them to do; and, like it or not, that government is headed by a crowd of people most of whom have never seen active military service.

During the last presidential campaign there were many hundreds of thousands of former military personnel (as well as those even then on active duty) who were turned off by much of what Howard Dean said or the way in which he said it. The memories of the way veterans of the Vietnam era were treated by anti-war activists remains all too fresh in the minds of those veterans.

Most career military personnel–those more senior officers and enlisted personnel who had 12 or more years of service–did not support the invasion of Iraq or the way in which it was done. Unlike those of us who rant and rave in forums such as this, they are not privileged to speak out for (like it or not) the are required to hold in abeyance the freedom of speech which they try to protect for all of us. They are not permitted by law to actively engage in political dialogue when in uniform or while representing themselves as military personnel. Would we want it any other way when we consider how many civilian governments have been overrun by military coups?

Then along came the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” none of whom served directly with John Kerry. Kerry had been highly decorated for his actions under fire and had, in fact, been wounded by enemy action on 3 occasions. I was and remain totally disgusted by the temerity of those veterans who took it on themselves to demean the honorable service of another veteran–especially when those doing so had no direct knowledge of Kerry’s service.

The Howard Dean rhetoric–rhetoric which seemed a direct slap in the face to many veterans–could not help but turn them off to Dean. The result was ever greater polarization as regards the military with republicans saying they supported the troops and that those who did not support the (internationally) illegal war in Iraq as being traitors to veterans. That bad karma militated greatly against Kerry’s chances to win.

I would admonish those who call themselves progressives to think of one thing–If you can’t get elected, you cannot run the show.

When you viciously attack incumbent democrats and hurt their reelection chances through your diatribes against them, you should remember that the candidate you support may not be elected. Your “progressive” vote may so wound an electable democrat that you insure the republicans you seem to so detest will win instead.

Republicans, and especially those rabid ultra-conservative pundits such as Ann Coulter and those who support her vindictivness, are taking full advantage of the division so many progressives are bringing to the democrat side of the equation.

As a democrat, as a French-American (only since some rabid republicans started talking about “freedom fries”), and as a service-connected disabled veteran who did his best to honorably serve all of you for over 30 years, I find it extremely disconcerting to read the abject hatred of each other so obvious in your writings.

We are all in this together and, at least from my perspective, we should totally honor those who serve in uniform even if we do not support the war in which we have been embroiled based on skewed intelligence for possibly nefarious reasons by NeoCons such as Richard Perle, R
