ThinkFast PM: June 22, 2006

Kevin Drum agrees with Jonah Goldberg, who is fascinated by “how the Internet is allowing the nation to return to its historical relationship with the media, not how it’s changing everything.”

The Bush administration sends mixed signals on its plans to deal with North Korea.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) on the benefits of cutting the estate tax: “Paris Hilton, once this is passed, will be able to jet set around the world buying herself more bling and more dogs to carry around in her purse and probably never work a day in her life.”

Stop the Bush administration from “strangling” the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, “the federal agency charged with protecting employees and job applicants from workplace discrimination.”

“U.S. military documents, obtained by ABC News, list the brother of Afghanistan president Karzai as a ‘problem maker’ in the pay of drug lords.”

And finally: A round-up of blogging on the World Cup.

What did we miss on the blogs? Let us know in the comments section.

Plan? Since when has the Bush admistration had a plan for anything? Their diplomacy is made up of nothing but threats.

That is an unkind remark about Miss Hilton. She is a working girl whether she charges for it or not.

i found this at crooksandliars – “We’ve been having big fun with this site”

George Says… featuring George W. Bush!

How it works: Just type in what you want George to say in the text box…

#4 – Some of most favorites:

The Real Ugly American – I don’t know what to think, but somehow this proves that Atrios and Keith Olbermann are real dumb.

Wizbang – I have never doubted there were WMDs even though we don’t yet know enough to know whether there were WMDs.
    (emphasis mine)

    They’re real fart smellers, alright.

  6. Zookeeper says:

#6 – katy, that site is SO cool!

My desktop now shows GWB in pose #11, with a background of flag-draped coffins, and these words: I admit it, I’m the biggest fuck-up to ever exist. I resign, and I will not accept any pardon offered.

*sigh* A girl can dream, can’t she?

“…the brother of Afghanistan president Karzai {i}s a ‘problem maker’ in the pay of drug lords.” – - It’s Clinton’s fault. Roger’s!

another find… this looked quite interesting… a mix of blogs from all sides:
    memeorandum
“Most liberal bloggers link to stories that help their cause or side. Most conservative bloggers do the same. Visit Memeorandum when bad news breaks for Bush and the place is awash in liberal referrals. Do the same when the Prez’s poll numbers rebound and the conservatives own the joint.”

  9. Dave M. says:

I love me some Louise Slaughter. Partially because she tells it how it is, and partially because her district office is in the same building that I work in. Every day on my way to work I wonder if she’s in there, doing whatever representatives do. It’s like passing the office of a minor celebrity of sorts!

love that news.google.com… found several stories on that raid in miami…
good news about those arrests as i just made plans to send my daughter and her friend to chicago for her 21st birthday next week… well, maybe…

    this from cnn:
The FBI said one search warrant was executed in a warehouse near a housing project in Liberty City, a predominantly black and low-income area of Miami.

“We are conducting a number of arrests and searches, and we’ll have more about that when the operation is completed, probably tomorrow morning,” FBI Director Robert Mueller told CNN’s Larry King in an interview to be broadcast Thursday night.

“Because it’s an ongoing operation, we really can’t get into details,” Mueller said. “But whenever we undertake an operation like this, we would not do it without the approval of a judge. We’ve got search warrants and arrest warrants and the like. ….”

In a statement, the U.S. attorney’s office in Miami said federal, state and local agencies had made several arrests Thursday in connection with a domestic “terrorist-related matter.”

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will hold a news conference Friday regarding the raids.

something to look forward to tomorrow…

Can you imagine how Sally Fields must cringe every time she thinks of that?

Trueblue, that thread was so chaotic, it was crazy. Jane’s email address is several below yours on that thread with Cheney’s smiling (yikes) face on it.

Honestly, I can’t blame you for leaving for awhile. It seems like we have more trolls than ever, although some of them are halfway intelligent, if you can believe that. I appreciate the ThinkFast threads because it’s a place to retreat from the worst of the trolls most of the time. I don’t think they get “talking points” for open threads. :-D

    Comment by the fly-man

I think the mistake Joe makes is thinking that diplomacy is called for when dealing with an insane midget with a nuclear bomb. That’s why I told him to grow up. Diplomacy only works when both sides are afraid of losing something. It’s not going to work with Kim because he’s insane.

I’m not alone in that opinion either…

Former defense secretary (under Bill Cliinton) William J. Perry has called on President Bush to launch a preemptive strike against the long-range ballistic missile that U.S. intelligence analysts say North Korea is preparing to launch.

In an opinion article that appears in today’s Washington Post, Perry and former assistant defense secretary Ashton B. Carter argue that if North Korea continues launch preparations, Bush should immediately declare that the United States will destroy the missile before it can be fired.

OK, sorry to be clueless, but can somebody take pity on me and explain what Paris Hilton has done to deserve being dragged up this way in estate tax debate? I have not studied the supermarket tabloids as I should, but I gather she has done a few lurid things, and is an actress and not a very good one, and I suppose the estate tax tie in is that she inherited the Hilton fortune. But I guess what I’m asking is, did she insert herself in this debate, or did anti estate tax folks just choose her as a convenient target?

  43. Krazny says:

The pro estate tax people insterted paris not the othe way around. Can you honestly look at her and think she deserves the millions she will get from her parents?

  55. Bowdler says:

Re: paris hilton and the estate tax. I beleive it is related to an american concept of meritocracy. That people who contribute value to society are rewarded. The fact that your predecessors added value, doesn’t necessarily mean you will. In fact, if you recieve an incredible inheritance, chances are that there will be no incentive for you to use your native talents to do anything but party.
People like me work hard every day, and dream of someday retiring. Maybe get a winnabego and travel the country. The greatest threat to my retirement dream is the insanely irresponsible fiscal policy of this administration. Part of that policy is the repeal of inheritance tax.
So, to see a vapid skank such as paris covorting around, and realize that she is part of the reason I may be spending my retirement years eating dog food and skipping needed medication, is a reason that she is the poster child for inheritance tax.

The Bush administration sends mixed signals on its plans to deal with North Korea.

Many folks up in DC are sending mixed signals, its part of the job.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) on the benefits of cutting the estate tax: “Paris Hilton, once this is passed, will be able to jet set around the world buying herself more bling and more dogs to carry around in her purse and probably never work a day in her life.”

How much would Paris Hilton save?

Stop the Bush administration from “strangling” the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, “the federal agency charged with protecting employees and job applicants from workplace discrimination.”

    Can they be stopped?

“U.S. military documents, obtained by ABC News, list the brother of Afghanistan president Karzai as a ‘problem maker’ in the pay of drug lords.”

Is TP encouraging me to begin conspiracy-theory oriented discussion with this one?

She is gonna need that money when she gets old ugly and depressed and has to spend it at drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities, not to mention the plastic surgery clinics around the globe she will need to rebuild that anorexic look.
I mean we should not expect the skank to get skankier should we?

  67. Jay Randal says:

Yesterday was another bad day for the Democrats, in DC, because 6 Dem Senators voted with the Republicans to prevent any timetable to bring the troops home from Iraq within a year?! Democrats are being outflanked by the evil Karl Rove, but they seem unaware that he plays them for fools > Dems better wake-up, and fight back, or they might get creamed in November?

  68. clif says:

Found this on a web site a comparison of the democrats plan and repug plan

    The democrats;

-to raise the minimum wage to $7.25
-to make college tuition tax deductible
-to cut the interest rates of student loans by 50%
-to eliminate subsidies to oil and gas companies
    -to impose lobbying restrictions
-to negotiate lower drug prices in the Medicare prescription plan
    -to maintain social security
-to increase funding for stem-cell research
-to restore the pay-as-you-go policy for federal budgets
-to reduce oil consumption 25% by 2020 through development of fuel alternatives
-to help millions of illegal immigrants work towards U.S. citizenship
    -to shore up homeland security
-to bring the troops home from Iraq “at the earliest practicable time”

    The repugs;

to keep the minimum wage at $5.15 for another ten years
-to continue giving fat tax breaks to their oil company pals
    -to destroy social security
-to reduce funding for health, education and social services across-the-board
-to continue spending like drunken sailors in a whorehouse
-to restrict spending on stem-cell research
-to continue allowing the drug and oil companies to make federal policy
-to continue giving huge tax breaks to the wealthiest taxpayers
-to eliminate the estate tax (and $1 trillion in revenue in the process)
-to deny homosexuals the right to marry
-to send illegal immigrants to jail
-to make sure that “English is the official language of the United States”
    -to outlaw flag-burning
-to continue sending troops to die in an unjust war, squandering precious military and financial resources that could be used to hunt down and fight our real enemy, Al Qaeda.

But they have the better ideas..just ask them…

I bet Carles Puyol, Barcelona’s defense, would break his leg in three before minute 10, if IRI dared call him “sissy”.

My guess is that he (IRI) is a fat, sad, boring 40 y/o with an average, non-creative job whose only thrill is Monday Night Football, which by the way I like (My team is the Steelers) but nothing compared to fútbol, in my opinion. Have you noticed that US sports have a lot of pauses? They are made like that so you can go and get your hot dog, pizza slice, big coke and ice cream. Good luck to Spain, buddy. He’s the most embarassing, drug-connected presidential brother since Roger Clinton!

  78. Evil Spaniard says:

Juan C: I think that most USA games are stopped so much because the players have too much muscle (thanks to anabolyzers), weight a lot and need to stop to breath now and then again. The only USA sport that I like is basketball, where they really excel, and the speed of the game and agility of the players is a must see. Oh, and they don’t wear armor, as the “manly” American Football or Hockey players. Well, I will concede, they are spectacular, as many USA events, but I prefer true sports over hype.

Oh, and I prefer a lot Rugby (go All Blacks!) over American Football (?). The only armor there is some player with a leather hat, and vaseline, to not have ears or noses ripped out in the melees.

In footbal (the true one), just an hour ago Spain won to Arabia :D. We are in the right path to the next phase, yay! BTW, one of the commenter for the Spaniard TV of the World Championship is Maradona.

And I have a friend couple formed by a german boy and an argentinian girl, both fierce football fans. The match Germany-Argentina in their house was a must see. I hardly can decide where was the bigger spectacle, in the TV or in the living room :D
