Last week, the Pentagon “shut down access entirely” to the Guantanamo Bay prison after the suicide deaths of three detainees. Journalists covering the suicides had their clearances revoked and were immediately flown back to the United States, and regular visits between detainees and their lawyers were cancelled. Human rights groups protested:
This press crackdown is the administration’s latest betrayal of fundamental American values. The Bush Administration is afraid of American reporters, afraid of American attorneys and afraid of American laws.
Afraid of American journalists, that is, as long as they’re not from Fox. This morning, Fox News analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano described how the Defense Department had personally invited him on a trip to Guantanamo on Wednesday:
NAPOLITANO: I was doing my radio show with Brian Kilmeade the other day and I get an email from the Defense Department saying, “We have an extra seat on a flight down to Guantanamo, would you like to come?” So, of course, I cleared it all — I cleared it here with our superiors. …
HOST: What’d you see?
NAPOLITANO: Well, we saw everything. … We saw all six camps. … We had FBI interviews, I actually sat down and examined the evidence they’re going to use at trial with prosecutors. It was very detailed.
HOST: That was some kind of access.
NAPOLITANO: It was. It was great.
Napolitano offered his fair and balanced review of conditions at the prison: among other glowing reviews, he claimed it is “now gentle, almost child-like the way they treat the detainees.”
I’m sure this guy’s hairline is closer to his eyebrows every time I see him.

June 23rd, 2006 at 1:44 pmInstead of hard and rough glowsticks up the butt, detainees will be interogated with soft, plush objects up the butt. And they’ve sanded the edges of teh waterboard so prisoners are less likely to injur themselves in the struggle for air!

June 23rd, 2006 at 2:02 pmSince both the Pentagon and Fox News Channel are notorious for not telling people the truth, why should we be bothered by any of this? The judge is being used to promote lies and falsehoods. And since he seems more than happy to do so, I see no reason why he should be afforded any respect at all, former judge or not.

I know.Unbelievable,isn’t it?
Human beings seem to have an amazing capacity to utterly lie to themselves.
Wait one damn minute!
The reason given for booting the media last week was that other media outlets were threatening to sue if they were not allowed in.
Does this mean that all the other media outlets now an open door to sue?
CNN should be calling their lawyers.

June 23rd, 2006 at 2:55 pmIf you have ever watched the judge, you know this s**t head is naieve, and is just what the Bush administration uses to push thier agenda.
June 23rd, 2006 at 2:59 pmLOL #25,
I know you need to believe in a “liberal media” but please the media didn’t give clinton a free pass on anything. Fox news on the other hand not only gives bush a free pass on everything, but stunts like this, and yesterdays blather about “finding WMD’s” sure they are deeply in bed with the republican party.
You have to understand, reporting an event, and stating the facts does not make them “liberal”. Saying things like no WMD’s found, 2500+ soldiers dead, new violence in Bagdad, or only 4 hours of elecricity per day are facts.
This is stupid crap made for stupid people, who want to truly believe in the Great Decider.

Australian troops shoot Iraqi minister’s bodyguards
By 7News

The Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force has confirmed that Australian soldiers protecting a trade delegation in Baghdad have mistakenly killed a bodyguard working for the Iraqi trade minister.
Three other people were wounded in the incident.
All were wearing civilian clothing and armed with rifles when they tried to overtake the trade convoy.
It was believed the Australians thought they were insurgents. An investigation is underway.
Initially it was reported that private security contractors protecting the convoy may have shot the men, but the ADF has confirmed members of its own security detachment were involved.
Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie expressed deep regret at the injuries and loss of life.
Pictures from the scene showed a white four-wheel-drive vehicle with bullet holes in the windscreen, which appeared to have run off the road. Blood was visible at the driver’s side door.
The Iraqi minister, Abdel Falah Al-Sudani, has called for trade with Australia to be suspended immediately.
He described the shooting as intentional criminal aggression and called on the Australian government to compensate the victims, describing the dead man as a martyr.
Australia has been trying to re-establish trade ties with Iraq in the wake of the AWB kickbacks scandal, where the national wheat exporter was found to have made secret payments to Saddam Hussein’s regime prior to the US inva

June 23rd, 2006 at 5:51 pmI find it so amusing that liberals are so scared of and annoyed with Fox News. For years, the left has had a complete monopoly on news coverage. The New York Times, CBS News, CNN, et al. could always be counted on to tow the liberal line and parrot the Democratic Party’s message. Now that Fox News is on the scene and actually dares to present an alternate viewpoint, the left is outraged. I can understand the frustration…Liberals had a monopoly and now it’s gone.

Hey, I am just saying you guys really seem to be worked up into a lather not only that Fox News has shattered the liberals’ and DNC’s monopoly on news coverage and its concomitant anti-Republican bias, but also over the fact that Fox is demolishing its liberal competitors (CNN, MSNBC) in the ratings…
As a former president once said, “I feel your pain,”
June 23rd, 2006 at 6:05 pmExley, I know that you and Wayne had a nice, civil conversation yesterday, but…I have to disagree with your post entirely. First, no one is “scared of” Fox News. Annoyed, yes; outraged, sometimes; disgusted, almost always. As far as the “left has had a complete monopoly on news coverage”, that’s just crap. The reporting of hard facts should not be confused with ‘to[eing] the liberal line…” When it comes to news, i.e., facts and events going on around the world, what “alternate viewpoint” is there other than the truth?
June 23rd, 2006 at 6:11 pmYou’re the one in here that seems to be “worked up” excrete.

# 65 Jane, Yes…Wayne and I did a civil discussion yesterday. It was a pleasure to discuss differences calmly without name-calling (CLUBBER WORFEUS should try to emulate that type of courtesy. I notice he has already degenerated into name-calling)…I am simply saying that this site seems to be inordinately focused on Fox News. Let us say, for the samke of argument, (I mean “debate”.. No arguing here) that Fox has a slightly more conservative tilt (I do not deny that, by the way). So what? Isn’t debate and the free exchange of ideas something to be encouraged. I disagree with you when you say that most of the news media does not have a liberal-bias (In my opinion, it clearly does), I think it is healthy that an alternate analysis of the news is highly desirable. I think the fact that Fox News is so highly rated shows that much of the American people agree with that.
June 23rd, 2006 at 6:29 pmIf people want to receive their news with a slightly more liberal tilt, they get to watch CNN or MSNBC or read The New York Times or The Washington Post….If others want to watch their news with a more conservative viewpoint, now they have Fox News. Its competition in the marketplace od ideas. I do not think that is a bad thing.

June 23rd, 2006 at 6:36 pmExley, I like my news to be, well, news. I can provide my own slant myself without someone telling me how to think about it. Another thing that I forgot to mention is how ‘news’ and ‘news-like’ talking-head shows just seem to blur the line dividing them. Give me the news of the day on one broadcast, then, if you insist, give me the news with ‘analysis’. Just make sure they’re separate.
And, while I usually try to be civil, I have to agree with Worfeus’s comment #71 about Moonbat Patrol.

Yea? Well shut up then and kneel a little lower.
June 23rd, 2006 at 6:47 pmJane, I agree…News and analysis should be kept separate. But unfortunately I find that is not always the case with much of the mainstream media, which all too often displays a liberal bias. I too would like to see news delivered objectively and fairly. But until that happens and the mainstream media reports the news without a liberal bias, conservatives are entitled to a news outlet that provides the news without such bias. It was the journalistic “sins” of the mainstream media over the years that gave rise to the market for Fox News.
Have a good weekend. I too am leaving.

June 23rd, 2006 at 6:53 pmSince Faux News is really not a news station, more like a RNC talking points provider, other news media should not be all that upset. It’s just propaganda they are after and we all know you in the rightwing media like NBC, MSNBC, NYT, WaPo, and of cource the WSJ, would have none of that. Is this why you other news providers just repeat the RNC talking points, so you’ll get invited to Gitmo for tour of their new and improved, soft ,”child like” wing? In keeping with the “child like” conditions, Republican Kool Aid will be served before all torture and is available for purchase between sessions.

but hey don’t take my word for it . next time we are attacked or under threat call that little senile apple doll of the left Helen Thomas. Or maybe the NY times and Boston Globe will help…no, maybe john Kerry … no, he will be hiding under his bed. Murtha, feingold… ah, no again they will be hiding under ted kennedy’s fat ass looking for shelter.
you talk an almost good fight worfeus but if the fretilizer hit the ventilator (translation for liberals- “the shit hit the fan”) you and all your “progressive” little hipster-whiners would be yelping that Bush did not do enought to protect us… right before some muslim dirtbag cut your head off with a dull rusty machete…….
Thanks to Gitmo you can bet Al Qaeda met its recruitment goals without any problems. It’s no surprise the ‘real’ press was kicked out and only Fox News given access. It’s probably too late anyway. The damage has been done. The USA’s image is already pass the Catch-22 threshold in the Arab world. Invading Iraq made sure of that. Gitmo and the other prison scandals are just icing on the cake.

June 23rd, 2006 at 7:45 pmYou say that your realtives fought in WW 2 and that is admirable and honorable but think about it for a minute. if you took your values as to this war and put it in perspective of WW2 then where would we be?? maybe living uder German or Japanese rule??
it’s easy for you to sit at your keyboard and call me a coward. Maybe I am a chickenhsit. But I am a chickenshit who does not want to live under the threat of another attack on amenrican soil. I am a chickenshit who does not want to live under Islamic law. I am willing to fight and support the people who fight to stop those that would attack us and our country .
I know that fighting with you is fruitless. you and i are worlds apart when it comes to these things but the personal attacks on someone who disagrees with you is juvenile and counterproductive and only benefits the real enemy. I am not a traitor . I love this country and do not want to see it fall into the hands of islamic terrorists or people like you.
Yeah they don;t have all the tech and military stuff but they did have enought smart to attack us in a way that collectively hurt the american spirit.

Hurt the American spirit. BAW HA HA OMFG, that is the funniest damn thing I’ve heard in a long time…stop, you’re killing me.
June 23rd, 2006 at 8:05 pm#89.
Do you just not get that as Americans, over the last 200+ years, we have fought to become a civilized nation. That means that even though our enemies may use barbaric tactics, we MUST rise above the sludge and show that there is a better way of representing our nation and it’s goals.
We are OUTRAGED at the disgusting manner by which our troops are vicitmized… but if we utilize the same tactics, or are found to use torture, we become no better than our enemies (just sludge)… but I assure you, we are a better people, a better nation. The fact than you can spout off about how you think we should treat or kill our enemies like they kill us, with no regard to the treaties and agreements we have signed is proof we are a better nation… Every citizien, even the less civilized or less intelligent can say what they like with the freedom of knowing you are protected by our Constittion… unless of course, the Administration decides you can’t spout off, in which case they’ll just add a signing statement to any law to allow themselves to disregard said law they just signed… Or they’ll tell a Judge hearing a case about ‘alleged’ spying that ‘might’ be proven to be illiegal that the Judge who represents a consititionally protected co-equal branch of the same gevernment cannot allow the case to be adjudicated because it would reveal State Secrets, so as to sweep the whole topic under the rug… I mean can’t a Judge just hear the case and make a determination in secret?… If not, is the Judicial Branch really co-equal?.
If you cannot or don’t want to see the headlights coming, that’s you’re prerogative, but some of us want off this train, and hopefully we can come together in large enough numbers to initiate change.
All you have to do is imagine you’ve been arrested for something you know you didn’t do, but you’re not allowed to make a phone call, or talk to an attorney, or even let your family know you’re alive…. FOR YEARS… imagine that this is the United States of America, the same country with freedoms that you swore allegiance to ‘under God’ when you were in Elementary School… Just imagine this scenario, then maybe you might be able to admit… it’s a ‘little’ scary ain’t it?
Peace and Good Luck!

First honest thing you’ve said all night.
June 23rd, 2006 at 8:11 pmI don’t know. This all seems kind of gay.
June 23rd, 2006 at 8:15 pmSeriously though moonjap, if you honestly think that the backwards nations of the middle east are going to “overrun” the United States of America, than you are more of a chicken than anyone I have ever met.
You want to be afraid of the new Chinese-Russo alliance? Ok. Cool. We can talk.
You want to be concerned about Bin Laden coming out of hiding in Kashmir and overthrowing Musharif and seizing the Nukes? Sure. I’m down with that.
But being afraid of the tiny nation of Iraq, is like Don Knotts being afraid of Mike Tyson.
Grow a pair.
June 23rd, 2006 at 8:15 pmLOL, I mean Mike Tyson being afraid of Don Knotts.
That would make you Mike.
June 23rd, 2006 at 8:20 pmSee, Americans aren’t opposed to defending their country. In fact, they embrace the idea.
We’re just against Nazi like occupations of tiny defenseless nations.

i mean where did you get THAT retarded name?? Is it a cross between clubber laing from roicky and the ugliest star trek character?? you must have given that name to yourself to boost your underinflated ego . The more you write the more I am convinced you are some 11 year old kid on his mommies computer. your juvenile attemempt at intellect is pathetic but typical of the moonbat chickenshit left.
so in closing clubhead grow up and look around you. get off your mommies computer and quit trying to score with all the skanky hippy girls and smoking pot in mommies basement and someday maybe you’ll progress from being the illiterate immature punk you are today.

June 23rd, 2006 at 10:16 pm“Well, we saw everything. … We saw all six camps. … We had FBI interviews, I actually sat down and examined the evidence they’re going to use at trial with prosecutors. It was very detailed.”
very detailed????
you mean like Colin Powell’s presentation to the UN? Seems like that was “very detailed” too, yes? Remind me again, how many of those “details” were grounded on fact, i.e. they were ever shown to be true AFTER the illegal invasion?
why do RWNs hate America?
June 23rd, 2006 at 10:27 pmHow much more are we expected to swallow from this ‘leadership’? How much more blatantly can we be insulted? With all of the whirlwind of ridiculous behaviors that are being displayed with the Canadian thing, the Miami thing, with Snow now being ‘the teacher’ mouthpiecing for the ‘the decider’, etc., etc., etc. and now this piece of engineered b.s……..we must have someone somewhere in the media who can put all of this together and present it so that even neocons can see through it. Of course they already know it’s b.s. and they laugh. It’s really amazing that all of this, which is so immature, is being fed to all during the prelim to the elections……..and sadly there are some who will really believe it.
June 23rd, 2006 at 11:33 pmFOX News whores should go live at GITMO for a year as prisoners, then report back about their treatment!
June 24th, 2006 at 12:00 amFoxNews covering Guantanamo. Absurd.
June 24th, 2006 at 12:40 amThey will whitewash the Guantanamo story.
Maybe they should cover real news, like caging protestors, forcing book outlets to stop selling books like
“America Deceived” by E.A. Blayre III because of it’s Orwellian nature and scenes involving Foxnews anchorwomen.
Maybe Foxnews shouild cover the inside job on 9/11 or NSA wiretapping ALL phones (without a warrant).
No, that may require reporting news.
Support Indy Media.

June 24th, 2006 at 1:25 amwhy wouldnt the right wing send its own station? the merger between the press and gov is now beginning. first, cheney only wants his own far right wing party’s “news” channel on, now the administration only allows its own de facto station to cover the guatanomo news first hand.
this has more in common with the old soviet union than the u.s. (as the far right is, not coincidentally, starting to dismantle the critical checks on governmental power under our constitutino, and upon which our nation was founded)
look, anybody NOT a right wing republican. please get this message out. post it everywhere, on conservative sites. moderate sites. send to real (if “bad”) media sources:
meanwhile, here’s a few examples on one of its frontline “fake” journalists, to being to set the record straight. hey may have more in common with hussein than he thinks….he just happened to have been born in America…..
June 24th, 2006 at 1:58 am#89-Moonbat Patrol, “next time we are attacked”- considering BushCo ignored more than 50 warnings that an attack was coming BEFORE 9/11, it seems THEIR lack of an ability to comprehend the magnitude of the real threat is exactly what got us to this point in the first place. I don’t trust their judgement. And if we are attacked again, I’m sure you will be first in line, demanding an explanation for how they let it happen, because they were doing everything they could, legal or not, to keep us safe, won’t you?
June 24th, 2006 at 2:50 amRight on, #10
June 24th, 2006 at 7:59 amWow! How convenient! The DOD contacts this guy DURING his show, with an ‘out of the blue’ offer he couldn’t resist. They just HAPPENED to have this ‘extra’ seat on this flight, and this guy instantly came to mind as THE perfect person to fill it! Cause kicking out all of the journalist’s might have given people the wrong impression, like maybe they have something to hide. Don’t want THAT! And they give him ‘the Grand Tour’, focusing on all of the ‘highlights’ and even a shot of one of those “terrorist killers”, as GWB calls them, looking down right at ease, and relaxed. And he even got access to the evidence against the detainees, their lawyers don’t even get that! I wonder if he got to try that “Lemon Chicken” they serve to those pampered prisoners. And he fell for it, hook, line and sinker, as if there was any doubt he would. But who was that guy in the picture? I can’t imagine BushCo would take a risk like that! He might be recognized by Al Queda, since they watch Fox News, 24/7. He could have sent a signal somehow. Careless! Who would believe this ‘infomercial’, courtesy of the DOD and Fox News? Some trolls I can think of, of course, but that is a given. They WANT to believe it. This must be that ‘transparent government’ thing GWB was talking about, because it’s transparent, all right.
June 24th, 2006 at 8:06 am[...] • The Pentagon banned the media from the Guantanamo Bay prison after the suicide deaths of three detainees with the exception of….., FOXNews (GOP-TV). Fox News analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano even chortled about how the Defense Department had personally invited him on a trip to visit Guantanamo. Let me say this again: it's time for Donald Rumsfeld to resign or be fired. Enough already. [...]

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeralyn-merritt/guantanamo-by-the-numbers_b_15317.html
“1. Fifty-five percent (55%) of the detainees are not determined to have committed any hostile acts against the United States or its coalition allies.”
“2. Only 8% of the detainees were characterized as al Qaeda fighters. Of the remaining detainees, 40% have no definitive connection with al Qaeda at all and 18% are have no definitive affiliation with either al Qaeda or the Taliban.”
Read the rest in the link, and also watch “The Power of Nightmares”.
I read somewhere that we are 24th in the world for freedom of information. Are we fascist yet?

June 24th, 2006 at 11:46 pmDon’t you get it? Gitmo is a smokescreen so no one will focus on the secret torture camps in Eastern Europe, where we can only guess at the Gestapo treatment of the prisoners.
June 25th, 2006 at 3:12 am[...] Great. Wonderful. I’m a little behind on this one, too, but it still managed to give me the same ache in my stomach that it would’ve if it were new: So, a week ago, the DOD tossed reporters out of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. Big surprise, there. Embarrassed by the prisoner suicides, they couldn’t have the pesky media around to perhaps give the slightest, thinest of hints as to the horrors behind those fences. Now, as of Friday, the government has relented and once again, the Gitmo operation will be exposed to the light of day. Well, the light of Fox. In the spirit of being fair, balanced and entirely above board, Fox News analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano was personally invited by the Pentagon to pop on down and reveal the truth about our little gulag. And what did the good judge have to say about the prison camp? Speaking of the conditions in the camp, His Fair and Balancedness pronounced: … [it is] now gentle, almost child-like the way they treat the detainees. Sigh. [link] [...]
June 25th, 2006 at 9:13 pmNo, let’s be factual, 3000 Americans were NOT killed on 09/11/01… nearly 200 of the victims were our TRADING partners from Canada, Britain, France, etc. Which is why it was so easy to put together a REAL coalition, to go after the REAL terrorists. It was, after all, the World TRADE Center…
And the attack on the Pentagon was NOT ‘terrorism against innocent civilians’… if the PENTAGON isn’t a legitimate military target than nothing in the world IS… I just can’t believe those Bozos were so lax they couldn’t even put some grunt on top of the Pentagon, like they have on the White House, with a Stinger…
And NOW we’re supposed to blindly ’stay the course’ with the assholes who were ASLEEP AT THE SWITCH (at the least) on 9/11… why, because they were so INCOMPETANT? Right, ’stay the course’ and receive ‘more of the same’… great… (HEAVY sarcasm)…
June 26th, 2006 at 12:32 amEVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING, WHAT IS MEANT TO BE WILL BE!
June 26th, 2006 at 7:28 amFor the first time in my life, I can truly say that I am ashamed of “My fellow Americans”.
I found this blog by accident, while researching a story about teaching bias that I heard on a radio station. I am now ashamed, because I as and American, am thrown in with what has become “Common” thought. It is truly shocking to actually see that there are so many people in this country that blindly follow the media and what they are told.
You spout hatred and disgust and have very little in the way of anything constructive other than “down with the government”. Unless you.. not what you have heard or been told, have actually been there, then please understand that neither side the reporting may be the absolute truth. For a country as great as ours to be even remotely associated with Nazi’s by its own citizens shows just how far from the truth you have led by the nose. In the countries that many of you say we are terrorists to, your comments aginst the government there would have you beheaded and your head placed on a pole in your front yard for all your neighbors to see what happens to those that dont agree with the establishment.
I believe America is a great nation. I believe this because I have personaly seen the good we do, and enjoy the freedoms that we have that we are trying to allow others to have. If the masses, and yes that means many of you continue to take for truth everything that you hear, or read or see on TV, then what is America will soon become what you fear it to be alredy. America will fall from internal dissent and another nation WILL take over. Then you will truly have something to be upset about when you no longer have the freedoms to speak out in such a forum as this.
GOD bless America, and the people that defend her!
