Iraqi prime minister to propose timetable.

Newsweek reports on a draft copy of a national reconciliation plan soon to be announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. It will ask for a firm U.S. withdrawal plan to be enforced by a United Nations resolution. Kevin Drum thinks Bush should seize on the plan to declare victory and “assure everyone that the job is close to done.”

So the Iraqi’s are cut and runners? How’s the GOP going to play this one?

  3. Above the Clouds says:

Saddam’s gone, no WMD, no oil for US, no freedom on the march for Iraq, no peace in te middle east, no connection to 9-11, untold thousands dead and suffering, and no utilities. What else can we do for Iraq? Since the great majority of the USAAND Iraqi people have lost faith in President Bush and his Administration’s handling of all aspects of the war, why not leave.

  4. Hardy Haberman says:

This is a chance to get out with honor and perhaps bring an end to the insurgency. It makes sense , therefore the Bush administration will not do it.

  5. DrSinker says:

Give them a chance to make it work.

Something tells me the Repubs are going to take them up on this, but hold out until after the midterms. Let’s hope they’re not still in control of both the House and Senate at that point. Leave it to them to seriously screw this up.

So what do we call the troop movement out of Iraq…

    or just…

    Operation Hopeless Endeavor?

  8. William Day says:

Something tells me this has all the hallmarks of a “Rove” solution to save the decider’s ass! It would take an astronomical amount of “head in the sandness” to really believe that the Iraqi PM would even think about something like this without first clearing it with the bushies.

Call the GOP back for a vote oh sorry it doesn’t count. Let’s see we invaded Iraq gave them trillion dollars, killed woman/children appointed a puppet President and we steal their oil , what do we get in return a get out and don’t let the door hit you in the butt. Oh yes Bush said they didn’t have to pay us back for the money we spent. Now Americans see what the world saw about Bush stupid is stupid does. Now we the taxpayers will pay for the mistake. Tony Snow wont have our troops deaths to call just numbers anymore. We have to stay the course oh they want us out we might have to fight them to stay for the oil that is.

We all know what is happening here. Bushco & Rove have pressued the Iraqi prez and prime minister to ask the US to leave.

They will do so in the unmistaken belief that they are saving King Georges ass. You know of course that these Iraqi officials are paid whores, paid by the US government. Paid millions of dollars to do the bidding of Bushco. Money talks, bullshit walks.

These ex-pats were all formerly in the US living it up on your dime. They were given huge amounts of money, cars, houses, apartments, credit cards, everything they needed to live the grand life style.

About five of the top Iraqi officials were urged to come to the US by Bush as soon as Cheney and he put their heads together in 2000. GOOGLE IT!

    Maliki’s Master Plan

A national reconciliation plan for Iraq calls for a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops and, controversially, amnesty for insurgents who attacked American and Iraqi soldiers.

    By Rod Nordland / Newsweek

June 24, 2006 – A timetable for withdrawal of occupation troops from Iraq. Amnesty for all insurgents who attacked U.S. and Iraqi military targets. Release of all security detainees from U.S. and Iraqi prisons. Compensation for victims of coalition military operations.

Those sound like the demands of some of the insurgents themselves, and in fact they are. But they’re also key clauses of a national reconciliation plan drafted by new Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who will unveil it Sunday. The provisions will spark sharp debate in Iraq—but the fiercest opposition is likely to come from Washington, which has opposed any talk of timetables, or of amnesty for insurgents who have attacked American soldiers.

  16. Red says:

Bush will do what he’s been doing for weeks. Just ignore them. Pretend he doesn’t hear the increasing calls by Iraqi officials for the US to set a timetable. It will take mass protests by millions of Iraqis to get the Idiot-in-Chief’s attention, and then he’ll just call them terrorists and carpet bomb them.

  20. sugar magnolia says:

The proposal recognizes “the necessity of agreeing on a timetable under conditions that take into account the formation of Iraqi armed forces so as to guarantee Iraq’s security,”

Why does that sound familiar? Oh yes, that’s been our policy all along. As the Iraqi forces stand up, we’ll stand down. The US will claim victory in Iraq when their government tell us they are ready to take over. Sometime in 2007.

  21. Red says:

Sugar Magnolia, do you really think Bush-Cheney spent all this blood and treasure just so the Shiite majority could have elections and set up an Islamic state? If that’s what you believe, you’re in for a big surprise.

  22. sugar magnolia says:

  24. Barfly says:

    From the Newsweek article:
But in Iraq, even a senior military official in the U.S.-led coalition said Friday that the coalition might consider a timetable under certain circumstances. And the official was careful to point out that a distinction needs to be made between terrorists and the resistance.

NOW it’s important to make a distinction between the two, since they’ve gotten all the political mileage they can from calling them “dead-enders.”

More domino effect dogma. Since Vietnam fell to the communists, now we are all ruled from Beijing, right?

  25. Barfly says:

“And the official was careful to point out that a distinction needs to be made between terrorists and the resistance.”

So terrorists who killed Americans are bad, but resistance fighters who kill American troops are acceptable?

    Where’d Alice go? It’s tea-time . . .

  26. sugar magnolia says:

Since Vietnam fell to the communists, now we are all ruled from Beijingur

You clearly do not know your history. After the US cut and run Vietnam alienated China by invading and taking over Cambodia and installing a military presence in Laos. Vietnam then became closer to Moscow. Many thousands were slaughtered. And congress prevented the US from doing anything about it. Progressives want the same thing to happen in Iraq. Allow our enemies to come in and take over. Defeat is the progressive’s mantra.

  29. Red says:

Sugar dear, what makes you think the new Iraqi government (whose authority doesn’t extend beyond their own offices in Baghdad) will be our ally? They are much friendlier with Iran than they ever will be with us.

I remember how the domino principle worked (or didn’t).

Sarcasm is lost on the unimaginative, I guess. That was what we were told would happen (the domino effect) – or were you too young to remember, and so are getting your knowledge second-hand? They are trumpeting the same nonsense in Iraq, and the gullible are eating it up like creamed corn.

  32. Barfly says:

    Defeat is the progressive’s mantra.

And war profiteering is the conservative call to arms.

  33. Barfly says:

Hey Sugar, selling weapons to terrorists (Reagan) and then pardoning the guilty parties (Bush 1), shows how little republicans really value national security. No matter how much you squeak, history will still record that the worst terrorist act in American history happened under Bush, a Republican.
And as far as those weapons to Iran; how many munitions currently being smuggled from Iran into Iraq in the form of IED’s, first started out as the explosive components of TOW missiles traded to Iran in the 80’s?

And if you say that the missiles’ explosives would have been inert by this time, I would point out the same can be said of Bush’s weak-ass WMD assertion.

Compounded by the fact that no one ever pays you any valid attention, much less compliments shows that they matter far more to you than me.

Army wives get phone death threats from Iraq

Wives and family members of soldiers fighting in Iraq have received telephone calls, believed to include death threats, from insurgents, according to military documents seen by The Sunday Telegraph.

The “nuisance” calls have been made with increasing frequency over the past few weeks after insurgents managed to obtain home numbers from soldiers’ mobile telephones.

The growing number of calls has led to an investigation by the Royal Military Police, which has issued a warning to all soldiers in Iraq to take great care when using mobile telephones to call home.
