Warren Buffett: Major Philanthropist and Opponent of Estate Tax Repeal
Warren Buffett, the world’s second-richest man, announced this week that he plans to give away 85 percent of his $44 billion fortune to charity. Buffett explained his motivation in today’s New York Times:
“I love it when I’m around the country club, and I hear people talking about the debilitating effects of a welfare society,” he said. “At the same time, they leave their kids a lifetime and beyond of food stamps. Instead of having a welfare officer, they have a trust officer. And instead of food stamps, they have stocks and bonds.”
It’s hardly a suprise, then, that Buffett also opposes repealing the Estate Tax (aka the Paris Hilton Tax), a “graduated inheritance tax on big fortunes“:
Mr. Buffett said repealing the estate tax “would be a terrible mistake,” the equivalent of “choosing the 2020 Olympic team by picking the eldest sons of the gold-medal winners in the 2000 Olympics.” …
“We have come closer to a true meritocracy than anywhere else around the world,” he said. “You have mobility so people with talents can be put to the best use. Without the estate tax, you in effect will have an aristocracy of wealth, which means you pass down the ability to command the resources of the nation based on heredity rather than merit.” [NYT, 2/14/01]
Buffett was also opposed to President Bush’s dividend and income tax cuts for the wealthy. “If class warfare is being waged in America,” he wrote, “my class is clearly winning.” Congress ought to listen.

There are income tax deduction limitations on amounts contributed to private foundations where you maintain control, which this probably fits into. However, I doubt either Gates or Buffet do this for tax deduction purposes.

Mr. Buffet’s contribution to charity is commendable.
However; it is important to note that the gift will be structured in a fashion to avoid estate and gift taxes. It seems that Mr. Buffet is in favor of the estate tax on others but not on himself.

Mr. Buffet could virtually end welfare, save social security, help the families of the men and women who are putting thier lives on the line so that we(he) can do what we want with our money. What about the Katrina victims, the flood victims of the current rains, the mud slide victims and all the other natural distaster victimes right here at home?
$44billion minus $300 million still leaves a lot to be given to charities in poor nations.
What about our working poor who can’t afford health insurance? The seniors who have to chose between food and medicine? How about those who, by no fault of their own, have fallen on hard times? And those who work hard, trying desparately to pay to give their children a good education because the public school systems are a joke? Just a portion of that money could do a lot for so many right here at home.
I too would love to have a conversation with Mr. Buffett.

Once again, President Bush has stepped up his calls to make his tax cuts (for the rich) permanent, and right-wingers are aggressively promoting a repeal of the estate tax. In 2005, Bush promised to “give this nation a tax code that is pro-growth, easy to understand, and fair to all.” Fair to all? The estate tax, now dubbed the ‘Death Tax’ by neo-conservatives, affects only the very richest of Americans — and then only the heirs of those multi-millionaires. As if it really matters. The decedent is not affected at all by the estate tax — only his or her heirs! I’m not so sure the overwhelming majority of Americans have any interest in perpetuating what has become an aristocracy of overwhelming wealth, power and influence. So, one might ask, why tax the rich? Because that’s where the money is!!
Conservatives (a misnomer these days) deceitfully portray the estate tax as a ‘death tax’ on small family-owned businesses. The fact of the matter is that less than 1% of the people that died in 2004 paid any estate tax at all, and half of the revenue from that tax came from estates valued at $10 million or more. As the estate tax law is now constituted, by 2009 only families worth more than $7 million will pay even a penny in estate taxes.
The consequence of repealing the estate tax is this: simply put, the loss in revenue would be staggering — an estimated three quarters of a trillion dollars in the next decade. This loss of revenue, combined with recent tax reductions on unearned income is going to bring us to the point of no return, since adding further to our national debt is unsustainable. We may have already reached that point of no return.

While giving money to charity to avoid the estate tax does nothing to increase government revenue, it does prevent the aristocracy. That alone is something to applaud. I also wonder how much of Warren Buffett’s fortune would be paid in estate taxes and how that compares to how much he is donating?

Microsoft had NOTHING to do with it. It was just lucky twice in a row, first when IBM asked it to provide an OS for the original PC (and M$ bought it from a programmer, who wasn’t told who the final customer was), then when Compaq decided to spend a million dollars in clining IBM’s BIOS. That Warren Buffett would give away so much money frankly does not suprise me a lot. With his habit of investing in undervalued firms to make money when their stock increases in value he probably helped most of them. And he has his heart in the right place. […]

We opened a school in Rakai District, a district that was badly hit by HIV/AIDS scouge, and we hold seminars in different locality of the country.
As is the work is not simple , it requires us good facilitation.
Besides , we render, voluntary exercise of donating to the needy , like the HIV/AIDS victims and old people who cannot help themselves esp., parents who lost the juveniles.
Most of this work is done in remote-rular areas where people are seem to be very poor with low income generation and earning.
So, many orphans are found in those poor zones and need much help from whoever is kind and conscious of the disease.

In my community where my father is the king farming is the means of livlyhood and cassava is now a major farm crop when processed I am soliciting for your support to come to my kingdom to establish a cassava processing industry to help process the cassava and encourage the villagers to work hard as they now have buyer to their cassava after cultivation it will help aliviate poverty.
NB:The government when giving money for projects like this will not use it for the purpose they will eat the money and the poor people will still be suffering I will want you to come and handle this project your self

Well, I developed a system which substitutes for natural gas and I have been searching for years on the many Department of Energy web sites for a small amount of funding to bring this to market. It appears that the DOE is not so much interested in innovation as it is in giving the cronies of the people in charge the cream of the monies available. Someone who is an outsider does not have a chance. My technology was intended to be a replacement for natural gas but after it was a going thing, I realized that it would be possible to expand the processes and it would act to replace all energy requiring systems. All vehicles could be fit with this system next week, eleiminating the need for all foreign oil and global warming emissions. All pwer generating facilities could be fit with this process and generate electricity without using coal or natural gas and so further pollute the air we breathe. I need an electrical engineer to complete my work. The benefit of what I can do is emmense. Please have Mr Buffet or a close associate contact me concerning the ultimate conclusion of this work.
