ThinkFast AM: June 26, 2006

“Climate experts have started to worry that the ice cap is disappearing in ways that computer models had not predicted.” Greenland’s glaciers are melting twice as fast as they were five years ago. Should all of the ice sheet thaw, sea levels could rise by 21 feet and swamp the world’s coastal cities.

As the summer heat soars to over 120 degrees in Iraq, “power supply still falls about 33% short of demand.” Power in Baghdad comes on for approximately 90 minutes once every six hours.

Former CIA officer Tyler Drumheller said he personally crossed out a reference to Iraq’s supposed mobile bioweapons labs from a classified draft of Colin Powell’s Feb. 2002 U.N. speech because he recognized the source (”Curveball”) as someone who was mentally unstable and a liar. Powell still claimed to “have firsthand descriptions of biological weapons factories on wheels and rails.”

$135,000: Amount White House staffers have accepted in free trips since Nov. 2004. Among those picking up the tab are some of the President’s top business supporters and dozens of conservative and religious groups.

Leading conservative members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said that the administration should talk directly with North Korea to resolve the ongoing tensions. “We need to talk directly with North Korea. The sooner we do that, the sooner we’re going to get this resolved,” said Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE). Chairman Richard Lugar (R-IN) also lent his support to the idea.

“The White House and key congressional committees have begun crafting legislation that would try to overcome legal objections to the Bush administration’s controversial domestic surveillance program and subject it to review by a secret intelligence court.”

In July 2005, “Bush’s business backers were cheered by the appointment of Judge [John] Roberts.” After the completion of his first term, Bloomberg reports why: “Companies and business groups got most of what they sought in Chief Justice John Roberts’s first U.S. Supreme Court term, including limits on antitrust and securities suits and the prospect of new caps on punitive damages next year.”

Japan admits to buying pro-whaling votes: “Less than a week since Japan and its allies scored a stunning victory at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) conference – paving the way for a possible return to commercial whaling – the Japanese government has inadvertently revealed how it was done: by buying the votes it needed.”

2 million: Number of passports the Iraqi government has issued in the past 10 months as the country’s best, brightest flee from violence. More than 40 percent of Iraq’s professional class has left the country since late 2003.

And finally: British army mascot Billy the goat was demoted in disgrace “after it marched out of line before a host of dignitaries during a parade to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday.” One soldier accused Billy of “trying to head-butt the waist and nether regions of the drummers.” “Since the goat’s demotion, soldiers of a lower rank are no longer expected to salute Billy as a sign of respect,” said a spokesman.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

“The White House and key congressional committees have begun crafting legislation that would try to overcome legal objections to the Bush administration’s controversial domestic surveillance program and subject it to review by a secret intelligence court.”

Sure, now that President Bush has perfected his system of signing bills into law and then issuing unconstitutional signing statements that say he will only follow the law when he feels it doesn’t interfere with his powers as “Commander-in-Chief”, his own interpretation of the law, or his own interpretation of the US Constitution.

In light of that, it really makes no difference one way or the other whether Congress passes any legislation in this area. This president will ignore it at “the whim of a hat” (to borrow one of his actual phrases.)

2 million of the “best and brightest” leave Iraq?

So, if we occupy Iraq for about 10 more years, we will have run everyone out of the country and solved the “Iraqi problem”!

And they say Pres. Bush didn’t have a plan for Iraq! Oh, those silly Democratic naysayers! What will they claim next? That the tax cuts overwhelmingly favor the rich? That the debt is the highest in the world? That Constitutional civil rights are threatened by over-reaching of the “unitary executive” powers that Pres. Bush is creating?

I should amend my post to say ‘decreasing resources’. That’s even worse than limited.

Only 21 feet? I am set, since I am 7 floors up oceanside, I just need to dust off my sea kayak for my new commute. I guess this makes Al Gore one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse?

  7. unbelievable says:

    Jason,

Well, just as long as you are okay – that’s all that matters. Who cares about anyone else, right?

I hope the foundations of your building are on stable bedrock and the building is sea-worthy waterproofed. Otherwise, that 7 story apartment won’t help you very much. You might also wanna pick yourself up a row boat so you can leave your home, should it be able to subsist within the ocean….

Did Divine Strake go off in the Nevada desert as re-scheduled last Friday? I thought the test was postponed from June 2 to June 23rd. I’ve been having a hard time finding any information on it. Thanks.

  9. Democrat Soldier says:

#6 – That would only be true if he facilitated global warming. Al Gore is more in line with Paul Revere: Global Warming is coming!

Since Pres. Bush doesn’t want any legislation that could possibly slow global warming, nor does he want any to join those countries that do by being a part of the Kyoto Treaty, HE is more like one of the horsemen of the Apocalypse.

We should definitely be talking to North Korea. Their leader is by all accounts certifiably crazy and wanting world attention. Clinton kept a conversation going with him and he primarily only talked crazy. Bush labels his country part of the axis of evil and ignores him otherwise. Now he seems to be moving toward acting crazy to garner that attention and to protect himself (just because you’re crazy doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you).

No – a sea kayak is a closed one person boat designed specifically for the ocean.

A row boat is an open boat into which you can also transport other people or things larger than the glove compartment of a kayak.

My building is a new construction on a barrier isalnd chain, so I think I will be OK. Everyone else should have planned ahead as I did – LOL.

As someone who practiced architecture for 14 years, I can almost bet that your building was NOT designed to be submerged in any part. They aren’t designed for being sea water resistent. I doubt you’ve planned at all, considering you have put yourself in an unsustainable situation.

    Adapt or die, sister.

They you’ll be going extinct before I will. I live at 1,020 feet above sea level. No boats required.

  17. Democrat Soldier says:

#13 – True. but he’ll lose much of Houston if this happens. Houston is between 0 and 90 feet of elevation, and since he’s sold his soul to Halliburton, that would mean he’s gotta do something about that city. Maybe he’ll grant Halliburton a tax break so they can move all their offices further inland?

For the most part coastal cities voted Democrat, so Pres. Bush doesn’t care much if they all go under. He’s only worried about the rich and Republicans. Preferably rich Republicans.

    #8 Wayne,
We must be on the same brain waves this weekend – I just checked into Divine Strake on Saturday, because it was supposed to have been rescheduled for this week in June, and I believe the event has been postponed. There was a lot of opposition from Indian tribes, plus the negative coverage in the media (those who dared to even mention it), so it has been shelved for now.
At least that was my understanding.

  20. Democrat Soldier says:

#10 – I’m assuming that you’ve “adapted” to drink sea water rather than fresh water.

Once your building becomes inundated by sea/ocean water, you’ll either have to “adapt” or die.

Well, I guess that moving away from your current location could be considered “adapting”. Adaptation by relocation. ;-)

How will you get electricity and potable water when the ocean cuts them off for you?

How will you get rid of your wastes considering there will be no processing facility?

That’s just the tip of the iceberg… pun intended.

#19 Marie, Thanks for the update. I have been googling it for about a week now and I can find nothing new. I heard that the first re-schedule date was this past Friday (the 23rd), but I haven’ t heard anything since. And Randi Rhodes is on vacation. She was my main source of info about this. And you’re right in that the government would prefer that we never heard of this in the first place. Too bad for them. We know now.

  31. Democrat Soldier says:

#24 – Does anyone have a graphical projection of what the American coast would look like if the oceans rose by 20-25 feet? I thought there was a site that showed that, but I cannot find it anymore.

By the way, I think that Mr. Hendler is just being facetious about staying in his high-rise if the ocean levels were to rise should we attempt to do nothing about global warming. First, I’m sure the rising seal levels would drive everyone else away from the area leaving him no source for food/water supplies. Second, I’m pretty confident that the building owners would sell well before the sea rose that high and evict everyone from the location.

My experience in life is that the arrogant believe it will never happen to them. And as a result, it almost always does. Look at the fruitcakes in Florida who had the means to leave during the various hurricanes there, but chose not to out of arrogance. They are the people on the news saying “I didn’t think it was gonna get that bad.”

  33. Democrat Soldier says:

He may be a “conservative” of the old school. You know, the ones that only exist outside of politics now-a-days? If he were an elected “conservative”, he would have sold his ethics for an appointment to some committee or some such thing.

Some weather experts/scientists believe it would take at least a hundred years for Greenland’s ice sheet to completely melt, but actually its effect on raising ocean levels would start rather quickly! Anyone who owns beachfront property would be wise to sell out to another sucker now!

  44. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #38, Cyra,

For your benefit, I will get serious.

As for adapting, usually the party out of power will retool with new ideas, new candidates, etc., in order to recapture the mainstream, yet, since 1994, Dems have only tried to repeat themselves ever louder and more frantically. You complain about global warming, but then talk about “renewable” fuels such as ethanol or bio-diesal, which make absolutely no improvement to greenhouse gas emissions, as well as causing a devastating environmental impact by requiring more land be cultivated to produce the crops required to replace petroleum fuels.

Democrats and their policies are NOT serious.

You are right in some points. There are not the only GREEN fuels. You are just mentioning those who can power your car as gasoline or diesel. There are other alternatives and you must know them cause there should be some class in Stanford where you review them. Even fuel cells that releases water vapor contribute to global warming. We have to look for solutions, alternatives and stop thinking if I would be able to drive my cadillac again or not. And your post below just show that you agree that Global Warming is happening.

Not talking about pollutants. I am talking about green house gases – CO2, etc. Ethanol, methanol and all other hydrocarbon fuels will still create green house gases when burned, so none of these are a solution to global warming – they just reduce our need for foreign sources of petroleum.

    #56, Juan C,

Should all of the ice sheet thaw, sea levels could rise by 21 feet and swamp the world’s coastal cities.

Yet the IPCC and the national academy of sciences in 11 countries say that the sea level is only going to rise 0.1 to 0.9 meters. The only foreseeable scenario for it rising 21 feet is if the warming continues unabated for hundreds or a thousand years. That’s what the scientists say, anyways. The LA Times is free to make up their own reality, as they often do.

As the summer heat soars to over 120 degrees in Iraq, “power supply still falls about 33% short of demand.” Power in Baghdad comes on for approximately 90 minutes once every six hours.

That certainly is a nice way to spin the fact that electricity production is up from pre-war levels. The demand is up because Iraq is moving ahead and the Iraqi people finally have the freedom to acquire all sorts of stuff. Iraqis can now use cellphones and the internet, for instance. You’ll never read that at Iraq-hating Think Progress.

OK. Show us some evidence Drumheller, or your claims are meaningless. Drumheller has already been caught lying about Naji Sabri on CBS 60 Minutes. I can’t see why he wouldn’t continue to do so to push his book.

Water in vapor form, that is. Water vapor is a greenhouse gas. Imagine all cars in the world releasing huge amounts of water vapor? WE need an integral, balanced solution. I agree with you in the dissociation of H2 from hydrocarbons, it could be really good if this process is made with RES (renewable energy sources). But it could be a hell lot better is we find another source of hydrogen. Say the seawater. It contains huge amounts of hydrogen. Now, instead of drilling the earth to get hydrocarbons to get hydrogen, we could get hydrogen from RES from the sea. Wouldnt it be nice? MY whole point here is common sense. Corporations dig in the earth to release substances that the whole great geophysical mechanism of deposition put them there so we, life, could get an optimal environment to emerge.

    #70, Dem Soldier,

I am saying that ethanol or other biofuels are little better than petroleum fuel in regards to greenhouse emissions, and NOT a solution to global warming, which was met with deafening silence.

    #73, Juan C,

Ah, I see what you mean now, but for a given air temperature, dry air can only hold so much humidity, then the water vapor condenses. In winter, cold air won’t hold nearly any water vapor. CO2 can keep being added to the air indefinitely, making the situation worse.

Again, I will concede that it is NOT perfect, but it is many, many times better than petroleum or bio fuels …

  75. Seixon says:

Thank you for the best description you could come up with for your concept of “progress”: cell phones and buying stuff.

I could add car ownership and other stuff too, but I’m guessing you don’t really care about all the positive stuff going on in Iraq. Neither does Think Progress. If Iraq turns out successful, all of you will moan and groan. You can’t deny it. You have invested too much anti-Bush sentiment in Iraq failing so you can never get out of it. That’s what happens when you are a shameless partisan, which is what Think Progress is filled with.

Real people would hope for the best for the Iraqis instead of secretly wishing for things to fail so that they can blame Bush for something.

You might wonder why Think Progress to the spin that demand for power isn’t filled, while not mentioning the power has surpassed pre-war levels. Or you will just avoid it like you just did.

  76. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #73, Juan C,

A vehicle could carry liquid sources of hydrogen and oxygen that use a slow catalytic process to release the hydrogen and oxygen as the fuel cell needs it. Nuclear, solar or wind power would be used to add hydrogen and oxygen to the liquid sources, so that no fossil or bio fuels are burned to create them.

  77. Barfly says:

You’ll never read that at Iraq-hating Think Progress.

Why do you think we hate Iraq? It’s your crowd (libertatian freaks included) that’s endorsed the indiscriminate killing of Iraqis dressed up as their “liberation,” you guys hate Iraq, not us.

  78. Barfly says:

Real people would hope for the best for the Iraqis instead of secretly wishing for things to fail so that they can blame Bush for something.Seixon

God sees your hypocrisy; do you think you can fool him with this self serving talk? He knows of the innocent Iraqis killed, and he knows who endorsed it. Spin your head off, in the final analysis, you’re headed for hell, buddy, and all your talk of freedom, while innocents are killed, seals your fate. Or perhaps you don’t believe in God?

  79. PLC (Patriotic Liberal Christian) says:

Evidence is great. How you speak for the Bush administration and give us some evidence related to our intervention in Iraq? Here, let me get you started, on the hypothesis “If the U.S. uses its military power to remove Saddam Hussein from power, Iraq will be improved by having more ________ and less _______.” Then, you can give us some hard facts, with consensus, to support that hypothesis. I’ve been looking for that kind of political science for three-plus years. NO SOLDIER LEFT BEHIND.

In 10 years there would be a 5 feet rise; in 20 years 5 feet more; in 30 years another 5 feet; in 40 years 5 feet more; in 50 years the full 25 feet. ( At 100 years scenario it would rise at half that rate!)

So in 10 years time the oceans could rise 2 to 5 feet, which is enough to cause problems on our coastlines!

  115. Democrat Soldier says:

#75 – Mr. Hendler, my pardon. I’ve been a bit too busy at work to concentrate on all posts today.

I don’t disagree with you that ethanol is not any better in greenhouse emissions than straight gasoline. I think that ethanol will start people on a change away from Gasoline in such a way that does not cause severe financial handicaps for both people and corporations.

To expect that the world will find and then take one big giant leap away from gasoline directly to a non-greenhouse emitting replacement would be like expecting Pres. Bush to care about average citizens: it just aint gonna happen.

Ethanol starts to process of turning away from gasoline that the oil companies have been dreading ever since the crisis in the 1970’s. We had over 30 years to find an alternative, and we just sat on our collective a$$e$ and did nothing expecting a solution to fall in our laps.

Now, we have to make some kind of effort, and ethanol is a start in the right direction. Once we get the oil companies on the bandwagon and finding viable alternatives, then we can move towards the one that works the best for us financially and environmentally.

  116. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #120, Dem Soldier,

Forcing a broad change that only succeeds in punishing the energy companies that have served this country for decades isn’t a rationale for such a sweeping change. Switching to ethanol from fossil fuels would give an economic advantage to China, Japan, India and Europe, which use petroleum fuels, because the price of oil would fall as our consumption decreases.

Why hand our economic competitors such an advantage to only punish American energy companies?

  128. Democrat Soldier says:

#121 – “Forcing a broad change that only succeeds in punishing the energy companies that have served this country for decades isn’t a rationale for such a sweeping change.”

Who said “force a broad change”??? Not me, that’s for darned sure! Does providing an alternative “force” people to use it, or oil companies to provide it? Ethanol can be produced in your own backyard! (Well, assuming that you have access to the bio mass.)

What I would like is for viable alternatives to come available that don’t require forced change to anyone. If you provide an alternative that is available but not required, then market forces will take effect and the demand will drive the market.

If companies begin to provide ethanol, and the demand increases, then it means that Americans are looking for something other than a “one size fits all” approach we currently have with oil/petroleum.

How does providing alternative fuels punishing American companies? That would be like saying “When we switched from horse and buggies to cars, we were punishing all the horse and buggy companies! Please, be realistic. Any alternative will take more than a single weekend to implement. Just because ethanol (or other alternative) was offered does not mean that American oil companies would shut their doors the following day. In fact, with a change to an alternative energy source, that provides competition that would drive oil companies to either change and begin providing their own alternative or die if they so choose.

Who was it who recently said “adapt or die”? ;-) I’m sure you didn’t think this only applied to living above the predicted water level should the oceans continue to rise!

  140. Democrat Soldier says:

#137 – I think you’re over-estimating the number of stations in California that offered ethanol alternative fuels. Especially in California.

“California has lagged in the national ethanol boom, but that is changing in a big way. If cars and trucks that can run largely on ethanol get a toehold in the state, advocates say, the sky’s the limit for the market of the fuel additive.”

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/06/12/MNGDPJCJMR1.DTL

I’ve found out what’s required for a vehicle to be converted to ethanol use, and it’s only about $100 worth of upgrades. I’ve already found a FFV Dodge Ram, and will be purchasing that to replace my Dakota. Here in Texas, I know a number of people who’ve begun purchasing their own materials so they can produce their own ethanol additive. Most of my friends with the wherewithall have begun the change.

Federally mandating a change is falling into the Republican belief that big-goivernment is the answer to the problem. And, yes, I do mean the Republicans. Despite their rhetoric, they’re the ones that have increased the federal government over 40% since they’ve been in control in Washington DC.

  142. Jason M. Hendler says:

    #146, Dem Soldier,

True, not many stations offered ethanol, because it didn’t catch on in the marketplace.

I wasn’t stating that Reps wanted to mandate anything, only the general truth that if something isn’t viable in the marketplace, it will only be accepted as a mandate.

There you go again with your holier-than-thou condescention. Trying to alleviate the fact that you don’t feel very valuable…. How about taking your own advice and keeping your unnessary comments to yourself?

sounds good – what’s your poison, zoo? … i’ve mostly given it all up – one of the best things about smoking was the drinking – gave up the cigs, so the drinking followed suit…
    but these days, it’s tempting…
when i have a drink, it’s whiskey, scotch preferably… chevas or pinch if i’m allowed to get picky!
hey, i’m not a cheap date!
i like the initial taste of some wines and beers, but they tend to make me mostly sleepy…
    ah well…
big day of yard work, between the showers… time to relax…

  169. katy says:

jules, if you have to ask…
    no offense…

There’s a history you don’t know about. I avoid her unless she makes an unnecessary derogatory comment to me. In which case, as I told her, I would call her on it. Other people have called her on it as well, but she is insistent on being disagreeable because she can’t leave it alone. Like a kid with a scab. Has to pick and pick and pick.

She wants different consequences, I suggest different actions.

You think you could stand even that much…? You’re a far stronger woman than I Cyra :)

#175 – My poison of choice, katy, is 1/2 a margarita, on the rocks with lots of salt. That’s all it takes. In fact, since it is now about 97 degrees here, I think I will have one right now.
    Cheers!

  173. katy says:

mmmmargaritas… yes, this time of year, an excellent choice!

last april, it was “mom’s day” at college and my daughter, her room mates and the moms had a margarita party at her apartment… i must say, i held up well… i practiced for a few fridays before, actually… heh…

so, i’m all ready to relax and look out the window and see another pile i’d forgotten to pick up so went out to do that and one thing led to another and then it was dark… now i can relax…

  174. katy says:

    than un’s a funny one…
i kinda thought the “extra, extra large…yuck” comment was “vicious”, but i’m just sensitive that way… personal comments like that just seem to be troll-like, unkind…

and stating, as a fact, no less, that i “don’t feel very valuable”… this from someone who sent her pictures to THE most obnoxious, rasist, bigoted, homophobic, misogynistic troll on this board… who’s looking for validation here?

    it’s a damn blog… i say what i want to whom i want… it’s that simple…
it sure ain’t my source for validation or even acceptance…
    jeesh… get real!

  175. EYE RIGHT EYE BLIND says:

    OH! YEEESS! UNBELIEVABLE!

You were wonderful last night all coated in white.

    I loved the wet spots.

But the flour made me sneeze some.

Tonight,it’s that fun you wanted with my deep fried shrimp.

Well, you also think spitting out a kid is some heroic feat. 6.4 billion people on the planet clearly shows otherwise…

You’re the one who has been compared to troll-like behavior by some of the most respected posters here. You were called a hypocrite and childish. You’re also incredibly condescending. But, people who pretend to be better than others are actually just hiding their own insecurity. You’re obvious. You can try to call that out on me to hide your own issues, but clearly you delude even yourself.

Well, I’m just telling you, since you can’t seem to get it on your own. If you keep making comments to and about me, I’m going to call you on it. Count on it.

So yuo can either take your own unsolicited advice and keep them to yourself, or you can post them and be called out for the puerile hypocrite that you are. And since you choose to keep running your mouth, it does demonstrate your need for acceptance and validation – no matter how much you deny it.

Go back to cutting and pasting – it’s less demenyed.
