ThinkFast PM: June 27, 2006»

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has promised “to block a congressional pay hike” until the minimum wage is raised.

A new campaign targets Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH) as the “leader of the apologist pack” in Congress trying to rubberstamp the Bush administration’s warrantless spying on Americans.

Conservative pundit/eyedrops spokesman Ben Stein pens a touching ode to Karl Rove, who is “amazingly fit and trim,” “helps wash the dishes,” and even agreed to drive Stein to a bookstore after their dinner. “Now, this is a great man.

Ratings for Fox News — particularly among the most important age demographic — are “dropping precipitously.”

Gristmill gives Rep. Henry Waxman’s Safe Climate Act — the first bill ever to target global warming pollution — a rave review.

Salon’s War Room points to a new Congressional Research Service report on spending in Iraq, and asks, “If we’re making so much progress in Iraq, how come the war keeps getting more expensive?”

And finally: A charming computer simulation of Earth being destroyed by a 100km-wide asteroid.

Well, it’s about GD time someone blocked a pay raise for congress. It’s obscene what Congresspeople are getting paid.

    2006 Annual Salary: $165,200
    Jan 01, 2007 bump: 3,300
    Total 2007 Comp. : $168,500
    Days Worked, 2006: 90
Daily Rate of Pay : 1,872.22

Block it Harry. It’s time the poor folks got a wage they might be able to live on. I know how tough it is to get by on pert near 1900 a day.

Posted by Rachel Neumann on June 26, 2006 at 1:29 PM.
On Friday, the Stryker Brigade was deployed to Iraq. The mother of Ehren Watada, the officer in the brigade who refused to go, sent this letter to explain her son’s actions:

    Dear Fellow Americans,

I am the mother of Lt. Ehren Watada, an officer stationed at Ft. Lewis. He is part of a Stryker brigade unit that deployed today to Iraq. Despite an unflinching commitment to his men and to democratic ideals, he chose not to accompany his men. His decision came through much soul-searching and through research and consultation with experts across disciplines, inside and outside of the military and the government.

I have dial-up and home, so forget it. I watched through about 1.5 minutes of it, which took FOREVER, and that was scary enough. I’ll thrill or depress all the zoo animals with it tomorrow.

  11. OxyCon Says:

Ben Stein should STFU and sin..g…, er what is it exactly that he does? He’s made a career out of being himself, a boring, monotonous idiot that acts like he had a lobotomy.
Why is it Ben Stein, Pat Sajak, Dennis Miller, Pat Boone and all the other Hollyweird idiots get to spew their opinions yet the Dixie Chicks, Rosie O’Donnell and Barbara Streisand are supposed to shut up and sing?

  12. Sue Says:

    One other thing..

My mom just returned from a vacation/cruise in Alaska. She is now emailing everyone she knows demanding that they take action against the drilling

Not bad for an ol lady huh?

  13. Seixon Says:

    Sue,

The term “erectile dysfunction” can mean the inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or the ability to achieve only brief erections. These various definitions make estimating the incidence of erectile dysfunction difficult. According to the National Institutes of Health in 2002, an estimated 15 million to 30 million men in the United States experience chronic erectile dysfunction.

According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), approximately 22 out of every 1000 men in the United States sought medical attention for ED in 1999.

Incidence of the disorder increases with age. Chronic ED affects about 5% of men in their 40s and 15–25% of men by the age of 65. Transient ED and inadequate erection affect as many as 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70.

Do you really hate the guy so much that you will laugh at a common medical problem for men? Sheesh.

  14. John O'Briant Says:

Took long enough on Reid’s proposal to block the Congressional pay increase. Does anybody know what happened to Sen. Clinton’s proposal a while back to tie Congressional pay raises to the minimum wage, so you couldn’t raise one without raising the other?

  28. Bowdler Says:

sam thanks for the fillibuster asshole. I read your first screed before I realized what you were up to, then I scrolled past the rest. I did, however, stop on a few spots. abu greb was one of them.
Here is my interpretation if events. rummy insisted on ignoring many studies by war experts and invaded iraq with less troops than recomended. He was in love with the idea of doing things leaner and meaner. When the insurgency started to flair, as predicted by the reports he chose to ignore. He decided to take a short-cut to circumvent it. iraqis were tortured to gain information about the insurgency, and hopefully thwart it. With hindsight we can safely say that it didn’t work very well. Remember they sent that guy (col. I think it was but I can’t remember his last name) from gitmo to abu greb to “gitmoize” abu greb. To think that what happened at abu greb didn’t come from at least rummy is to intentionally wear blinders. And I must add that I think it is shameful that the higher ups that are truly responsible for it scapegoated those kids.Anyways sam go believe wahtever shit fox shovels into that empty space behind your eyes.

  39. Jaded Prol Says:

We on the left are angry because the corporate syncophants (Mostly Repugs and some Dems) have destroyed the franchise and the basis of the republic and cause irreperable harm to our country. We have an embedded press, 2 bloody occupations based on lies with over a hundred thousand dead and an environment on the tipping point of disaster.

We’re angy because we’ve got brains and no, the Islamic fundimentalists are not our allies. They, like the Christian and Jewish Fundimentalists are the enemies of freedom. The Repug neocons on the other hand seem to love them. They support Israel, put Shia clerics in power in a former secular state and push Evangelicism at home. Why should we be angry about that?

  40. Jaded Prol Says:

Further more, one might, if one was sentient and aware, be angry that the health care system in our country is the shame of the industrialized nations with so many lacking access and so much spent, that our education system compares poorly with other nations and that while our economy is shakey and our productive jobs exported, our social safety net has been ripped out from under us by the last 3 presidents (yes, Clinton too). And doesn’t it choke you up to know that we have the largest percentage of our population in prison of any country on the globe?

Stop obsessing over the fact that I don’t find you valid. It’s stale and now absurd. You’re not going to change my mind or anyone else’s (not anyone rational anyway) by attempting to point out my typos. My typing sucks. I’ve repeatedly said so. Big deal. I could think of much bigger flaws to have… oh, hypocritical and patronizing come to mind…

Sybil you’re never right about anything. Don’t you get tired of failing at even trying to be obnoxious? You’re very silly and come across as a first grade tattle-tail. No one likes crybabies like you Sybil-Denny-E.coli-MA.

You know that by following me around trying to harrass me, you simply look like you are envious. Other people keep pointing it out to you, but you seem unable to hear it. Silly little troll. Must really suck to be you if you never have anything positive to say about anything, and get off on criticism.

Afraid of your own shadow, aren’t you? Just the truth. no tactics are necessary…

I only tell the truth. That’s why the sane crowd around here doesn’t challenge me. Just you freaks of nature. It means you can’t challenge what I’m saying because you have no facts, so you try to smear my character. Except you aren’t valid enough to do that.

Really, you trolls and conspiracy nuts should get over it already. I know you all need hobbies, but pick something less asinine than supporting Bush or the Inside Job nonsense.
