Court mostly upholds DeLay’s partisan redistricting.

The Supreme Court has “upheld most of the Texas congressional map engineered by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.” The Court did throw out an effort to shift 100,000 Hispanics “out of a district represented by a Republican incumbent and into a new, oddly shaped district,” finding the move violated the Voting Rights Act. More analysis here.

    Redistrict this Tom.

  2. Subway Serenade says:

Why am I not surprised? Now wait until Bush has his Unitary-Authority-in- time-of -war-without-end challenged and see what happens at the Supreme Court

  3. Badmoodman says:

Clearly a Republican victory. Face it, they have sneakier and more audacious tactics than Democrats and aren’t afraid to employ them. Their motto is something like: “Act now; determine legality later.”

  4. dlet says:

Court mostly upholds DeLay’s partisan redistricting.

Then the SC is “mostly” filled with hack judges.

  5. Jay Randal says:

The corruption is so bad in America, that this is just another proof of it!

  6. Hardy Haberman says:

Of course the court upheld it. They are partisan just like congress. We live in a totalitarian state disguised as a democracy. Until at least one branch of government is wrestled from the hands of the GOP we will have no say in our government or our destiny.

Ha! Ha! Try winning elections next time with ideas that more people will like!

  8. HmblDog says:

So maybe now that the Voting Rights Act is set to expire they should draw the districts again that way they can keep the district that SCOTUS is saying violated the Voting Rights Act.

  9. Marie says:

Did anyone think that the SCOTUS would vote against BushCo in any significant manner?

  10. Exley says:

Big win for the Republicans, Tom DeLay, and the Constitution….

“We reject the statewide challenge to Texas redistricting as an unconstitutional political gerrymander,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote.

  11. Krazny says:

Exley you made a mistake, it should read “big win for the repulicans, and Tom Delay.”

  12. Jules says:

Yeah a take off from the phrase “It is easier to gain forgiveness then permission!”

  13. Chase says:

By the Constitution, each state is given the authority to draw federal district lines. The only caveat is that those lines comply with the VRA of 64.

Both parties participate in political gerrymandering (the obvious result being the often-hilarious shape of most districts). In this case, the 2002 election was conducting using lines draw originally following the 1990 Census – they were obviously in need of change to reflect changing state demographics. When they tried to draw them after th 2000 Census, a politically divided state legislature failed to come to a consensus. A 3 judge panel used the 1990 lines and added the 2 newly apportioned districts.

What exactly is the left’s big complaint here? I don’t see a good one.

Randy? Boy your mama must have hated your ass giving you a shitty name like that.

  15. SKdeA says:

Randy, you forget that the right stole the election. Go back to spelling your name with an “i”, like the ho you must be…

  16. Marcus says:

    Those damn “Activist Judges”!!!!!

  17. purvis ames says:

By the way, the MSM are playing this like the Supreme Court heroically stood up to DeLay’s gerrymandering when, in fact, they gave him almost everything he wanted. What a bunch of venal swine.

  18. Exley says:

#18…I agree…This was a big big win for Delay and the media is desperately trying to spin it as some type of defeat for him.

  19. Retired Republican Soldier says:

What’s all the hubbub? All you fever swamp Mo0b@+5 claim that we neocon fascist’s racists steal election anyway, so why do you care how the lines are drawn? BTW how is Ronnnie Earl doing with that indictment? I wonder how spun up the LLL will get after a Delay acquittal? I guess this is just another defeat for he conservatives. A couple more and the Demoncrats will cease to exist! Vote Diebold, vote often!

  20. chopper says:

    “big win for Delay”

DeLay can dance all day in jail……..with the other inmates. Dancing may be preferable, as sitting may be a bit painful.

  21. Lily says:

Pretty much the same thing just happened in Ohio. But then I’m not sure what the issue was there. We all know how fair the elections are in Ohio!

  22. johny torch says:

I’m burnin’ a flag just for you retard republiscab, whooopeeeee

  23. Above the Clouds says:

I think Ronnnie Earl is doing just fine, just ask ex-Congressman who resigned in disgrace and shame Tom DeLay. Rather than face the truth and deal with the shitstorm he created for himself and fellow GOP sock puppets, DeLay took the low road and retreated–or should I say “Cut and Run?” DeLay is the poster boy for the sleazy, corrupt, manipulative and factually challenged losers who call themselves “conservatives.” DeLay is a huge reason the GOP will be tough brand to sell in November.

  24. qkslvrwolf says:

Personally, I think we ought to have an open (as in Free, as in beer) source algorithm for redefining districts once every census. I think it ought to be automated and absolutely consistantly fair, verified by both sides and the american public.

Thats the only way to fix this shit.

  25. mikep says:

Every judge concurred at some level…scalia and thomas with ginsburg and breyer. The background in the opinion shows that the new districts for the most part undo gerrymandering that was done back in the early 90’s.

Partisan hackery at its best…gotta love this site

  26. Zookeeper says:

RRS – What the hell is this? Mo0b@+5
Are you sure you’re aver the age of 11?
    And you’re missing the “n.”

  27. Chris says:

Interesting that this is how our democracy works…the politician gets to pick the voters, as opposed to the voters selecting the politician. Our notion of democracy has increasingly become a delusion.
