9 Responses to “NYT disclosure could help counterterror efforts?”
Jay Randal says:
Who knows whether the NYT newspaper has harmed or helped the fight against terrorism?! I doubt the Bush Regime was looking for terrorist accounts in US banks > more likely looking at their political enemies bank accounts, like the NSA is doing with wiretaps!
Randy: Clinton, again? I understand the GOP fascination with Clinton and his fiscally responsible days of smaller government and peace-and-prosperity. With Clinton we had lies about stained blue dresses–with Bush we lies leading to 2500+ dead soldiers and one constitutional crsis after another. You clowns keep defending these neocons even after repeated kicks to the nuts–I’ve heard about “taking one for the team” but you guys are pathological.
King better be careful about asking for hearings about who is leaking to the NYT–the last leak investigation led right to the White House to Libby and Rove. The GOP has lost their high ground on the leak situation–it looks like administration officials are standing in line to meet with the NYT to share the latest Bush White House screw-up. When are we going to start getting some news that what this White House is doing is actually helping Americans? Other than the small percent of GOP contributors and oil companies who get tax breaks?
The article doesn’t quite go where I thought it would. My first thought, upon reading the headline, was that changes in behavior right after the NYT would be a big red flag for the terrorist-hunters to see. The smart terrorists probably figured all along that their financial transactions were being monitored, but there are stupid terrorists and they can be dangerous too. Any of them who read the NYT story and then suddenly changed their financial patterns probably stick out like flashing beacons on the information landscape now. Making a disclosure and then seeing who jumps is a classic way to identify evildoers.
I’m sorry, but who cares?? The Times has every right, and imo even a duty, to make these surveillance programs public. This would be true even if any of these programs actually helped combat terrorism.
Now the terrorists know they have to find other ways to transfer money. Publicizing the program has made it more difficult for them to operate. Just like the newspaper story about the prostitution and drug stings makes everybody on the street think twice before making a street deal, thereby expanding the presence of the cops. They could never be on every corner, but the johns and dealers and terrorists can never be sure which corner the cops are on.
Maybe the leak and the outrage are all part of the same game. The info gets out, the right wingers get to blast the press again, el presidente gets to feign outrage, the Times takes one for the team. Everybody is happy.

June 29th, 2006 at 2:51 pm#1 Provide evidence of that please! What Clinton was doing on project Echelon, now that was most definetly spying on his/her enemies.
June 29th, 2006 at 3:16 pmPOst 2 provide evidence on anything Bush claims to do > he says everything is classified, which is just another way to shield his criminal acts!

June 29th, 2006 at 3:45 pmI wonder how many terrorist subscribe to the NYT? I doubt they would be willing to disclose that information since it would help Bush.
