“On December 18th, Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State, joined other prominent Washington figures at FedEx Field, the Redskins’ stadium, in a skybox belonging to the team’s owner.” The group began discussing news reports about the NSA’s warrantless surveillance of Americans. “According to someone who knows Powell, his comment about the article was terse. ‘It’s Addington,’ he said,” referring to Cheney Chief of Staff David Addington. “He doesn’t care about the Constitution.“

This is–apparently–the same Gitmo guy, who when told there were innocents in Gitmo, said “he didn’t care”.
What a piece of work.
June 30th, 2006 at 4:39 pm…And?
June 30th, 2006 at 4:48 pmThis is newsworthy why?
We already knew they didn’t care about the Constitution?
The revolution begins this November. Be ready
Collin Powell needs to come out in public and tell what he knows. Or, he needs to STFU and go down in history as the stooge that allowed this to happen.
June 30th, 2006 at 4:54 pmKnown as the New Paradigm, this strategy rests on a reading of the Constitution that few legal scholars share—namely, that the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has the authority to disregard virtually all previously known legal boundaries, if national security demands it. Under this framework, statutes prohibiting torture, secret detention, and warrantless surveillance have been VIA THE NEW yORKER
The Makings of a dicatorship with the right ego as the head of it. The saddest thing is every republican and some Democrats are the Enablers of this drunken state….
June 30th, 2006 at 5:02 pmAre we going to have to wait til Bush leaves office before Powell comes clean on everything. I know he knows much more than we’re hearing about. If he has no shame, he has no conscience.
June 30th, 2006 at 5:03 pmOnly liberals care about the mere scrap of paper called the Constitution. The rest of us know that we have to protect America from our enemies. And the left is our enemy.

June 30th, 2006 at 5:12 pmI agree entirely.
Powell is still that Foot Solider i don’t believe he will say anything.

Spoken like a true royalist. It’s a good thing your kind wasn’t around when that scrap of paper was written. Oh, wait, I forgot about the Torries . . .
Go change your underwear, cause you smell like ass!
June 30th, 2006 at 5:24 pm#6 is a fool. As an American, I would hope that you too value to Constitution and all it stands for. As an American, you should not allow “dear leader” to simply become a dictator. As an American, you should fight for the values and strengths that were here before Bu$hCo and will be here long after they are gone. Why do feel it necessary to support the very folks who are planning to do away with your citizenship? I mean it sounds as though you are so frightened of osama been forgotten, that you want to “feel safe” even though it means you will have no civil rights to enjoy. Why are you so scared? And frankly, if you are so scared and you are willing to do away with my rights also, I want you over in Iraq fighting. You cannot have it both ways nutjob. If you support “dear leader”, then get your ass to the fighting. If you support “dear leader” but you don’t want to fight, I suggest you get a job in the White House. There are dozens of “warriors” working there who have never held a weapon in their lives. Sounds like a good place for you. Please stop drinking the kool-aid. Thx.

If it weren’t for that “mere scrap of paper called the Constitution” (as you so patriotically put it), there wouldn’t even be a United States of America. Or haven’t you made the connection yet in your mind? Good thing for you that I’m not trained in psychiatry, or else I think I could prove that your postings are the product of a delusional mind. Enjoy your holiday in the land of the free and the home of the brave (and you).
June 30th, 2006 at 5:33 pmIncredible article on Addington. Sounds just like what we all think & fear on the progressive side of the aisle.
It’s funny how people like that don’t see themselves as tryannical or totalitarian. That’s what I don’t get.
June 30th, 2006 at 5:42 pmDo any of you truly believe that “No-Look Powell” will tell on those who made him what he is today!?!?!?
And this “playing the good Soldier” is pure B.S. Sure we’re to follow rules, regulations, and orders. But an unlawful order is to be reported………………..PERIOD!!! And Mr. Powell has had plenty of opportunities to say that he wasn’t gonna go along to get along, instead he played deaf, mute, and dumb. So I have no hope that he will overcome his selective amnesia anytime soon.
Let’s move on to the next issue.
RIP

That “scrap of paper” as you so lovingly refer to our truly beloved Constitution, the one Bush and his gang of goons want to destroy, protects your freedom to post your hate speach herein.
It also protects our right to call you an asshole.
June 30th, 2006 at 6:52 pmI’ve posted it before and probably will again; Colin Powell is a coward. And HE only cares about the Constitution in an ex post facto sort of way.
June 30th, 2006 at 7:08 pmPlease stop feeding the TSL troll. It’s just a put-on anyway.
June 30th, 2006 at 7:41 pmnamely, that the President, as Commander-in-Chief, has the authority to disregard virtually all previously known legal boundaries,
Carl Schmitt comes to mind..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Schmitt
“Die Diktatur” (”On Dictatorship”), in which he discussed the foundations of the newly-established Weimar Republic, emphasising the office of the Reichspräsident. For Schmitt, a strong dictatorship could embody the will of the people more effectively than any legislative body, as it can be decisive, whereas parliaments inevitably involve discussion and compromise:

You know, he’s right. By today’s standards, every single Founder of our country would seem like a raving liberal.
June 30th, 2006 at 7:49 pmman must be enslaved before he can be freed -marx
Delays’ mariana island project was a perfect example of exploitative capitalism and how republicans feel about mankind.
They don’t. I mean, you are but a battery to be drained of your energy and to be discarded.
“Only liberals care about the mere scrap of paper called the Constitution.â€
Only amoral exploitative apologists for Bush and his inhuman ilk don’t care about using the constituion as personal toilet-paper, and like those they sent to war they could care less as well. Just soldiers they Bush folks say, like that damn paper constitution, who cares if they die asks the Bush Folks?
June 30th, 2006 at 8:15 pmNot us they smirk– we are safe and sound.
Hmm, we have our own little Benedict Arnold here. Someone know how to tie a noose?
June 30th, 2006 at 9:07 pmColin Powell sold his soul to the devil when he worked for the Bush Regime! Nothing he does or says now can save his destroyed political career, nor will anyone ever vote for him!
June 30th, 2006 at 9:49 pmHe could have been the first Black president in American history, but instead he lied for W!
That “scrap of paper” is the ultimate legal barrier standing between this administration and the overwhelmingly negative mood of this country at this moment.
If we were a parlimentiary system, Bush & Co. would be so finished.
Well, we don’t. We have a constitution ordained and established by “we the people” that is the sole legal authority for the presidency itself, and if there is any doubt as to the truth of Mr. Bush’s claims of unchecked executive authority, the constitution establishes the congress first (in article I) and the Presidency second (in article II).
Even my home state of Arkansas gets it right in its state motto: “Regnat Populus,” The People Rule…not the President. The constitution is there for US, not him.
June 30th, 2006 at 10:21 pmWhich is more important to you and your loved ones?
Banning Gay Marriage and Passing Anti-Abortion Laws or
Decent Healthcare and Future Social Security Benefits?
You know what party to vote for this November.
How important is your vote? Just remember, if republicans gain control of the house and senate in 2006, this bunch of republican nuts will succeed this time in banishing Social Security. Inotherwords, you can kiss your Social Security goodbye.
Good night and Good Luck.
July 1st, 2006 at 12:43 amCorrection: If republicans REGAIN control of the house and senate in 2006, you can kiss your Social Security benefits goodbye.

July 1st, 2006 at 1:17 pmDon’t feed the OBVIOUS TROLL, kiddoes.
Colin Powell was hooked on Ambien, and pressured by experts, when he betrayed himself and his country, for the Military Industrial Conspiracy.
Still, he remains one of the potential Big Keys to removing the rightwing fascist coup that seized the country through massive nationwide vote-fraud.
As for the ‘revolution’ starting this November, no, the revolution, in that terminology, is going on RIGHT NOW, in locales all around the country, where activists are challenging the vote-fraud, preparing lawsuits, figuring out which election officials are complicit in the conspiracy, and helping to educate the public on the way in which their democracy has been crated up and shipped to the Land of Diebold.
Join the real revolution, NOW. Because if anything can be done to shortcircuit the Rapepublican vote-fraud machinery, that anything IS the solution to what ails us.
Don’t feed the goddamned trolls. The Constitution has the love and affection of eighty percent of the U.S. population, and is the repository of hope for hundreds of millions of people. The few GFH Bush loyalists would kill their grandmothers for a kiss on their bald heads by their uber-con artist. Or sell their children for heroin. Whichever comes first.
July 1st, 2006 at 2:02 pmI would urge everyone to read jane mayer’s article –go out and buy it, borrow it or read it at the library. This is the most chilling article I have read to date about this gang of thieves in the Administration. David Addington is beyond contempt! Sadly, if our congress was doing any oversight this may not have happened. Question Authority!!

July 1st, 2006 at 2:46 pmThe cartoon that accompanies the article says it all. Cheney,Bush and Addington have undertaken to shred the constitution. I didnt think i could despise these worms more than i already did but after reading the article it has been ratcheted up a ton. Monumentally scary what they are doing. What next ?? a coup? inalienable rights suspended? Chilling and maddening.
July 1st, 2006 at 11:37 pmPowell is a PROFOUND disappointment…
…just like Addington and Cheney et al. are TRAITORS…
July 2nd, 2006 at 1:57 pmThe poster who calls himself “Terror Sympathizing Left” may be a bit more clever than he’s being given credit for. He’s paraphrasing Hitler who called the Treaty of Versailles “just a piece” of paper and stopped paying the agreed upon war penalty. Is “Terror Sympathizing Left” a troll or a Facist?
