Hersh: Pentagon Commanders Increasingly Dissenting From Bush’s Iran Plans»

Last month, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) addressed the YearlyKos bloggers conference and announced that he would propose the Iran Intelligence Oversight Act, legislation meant to ensure that each of the administration’s claims on Iran would be backed up by the consensus assessments of intelligence analysts.

The Iran oversight legislation was unanimously accepted in the Senate as an amendment to the 2007 Defense Authorization Bill, which passed in late June. Here’s why passage of the bill was so important.

In this week’s New Yorker, Seymour Hersh writes that Pentagon officials, who have been charged by Bush to draw up plans for a major bombing campaign inside Iran, are “increasingly challeng[ing] the President’s plans.” Military officials are voicing their concerns that the intelligence on Iran doesn’t stack up, according to Hersh:

A crucial issue in the military’s dissent, the officers said, is the fact that American and European intelligence agencies have not found specific evidence of clandestine activities or hidden facilities; the war planners are not sure what to hit. “The target array in Iran is huge, but it’s amorphous,” a high-ranking general told me. “The question we face is, When does innocent infrastructure evolve into something nefarious?”
…
A former senior intelligence official told me that people in the Pentagon were asking, “What’s the evidence? We’ve got a million tentacles out there, overt and covert, and these guys”—the Iranians—“have been working on this for eighteen years, and we have nothing? We’re coming up with jack shit.”
…
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and his senior aides “really think they can do this on the cheap, and they underestimate the capability of the adversary,” [a senior military official] said.
…
[Ret. Army Maj. Gen. William Nash, former commander of the First Armored Division:] “Their first possible response would be to send forces into Iraq. And, since the Iraqi Army has limited capacity, it means that the coalition forces would have to engage them. … It would probably cause the war to spread.”

If Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and company don’t want to accept the judgments of intelligence experts before deciding what to do about Iran, it’s up to Congress to force them to.

  4. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

On the subject of Iran, I would caution everyone that the AUMF that launched the “War on Terror” gave the president the authority to attack any country involved in the planning or execution of the 9/11 attacks. Former CIA agent Robert Baer has said that we already know that the planning for the 9/11 attacks took place in Iran and, if I understood correctly, the Iranian government was either complicit or directly involved. I may have gotten that wrong and i apologize if I did.

Since our Congress has already given the okay, only the United Nations could stop President Bush from attacking Iran right now, and we all saw what happened the last time it looked like they might not let him have his way. Just a heads up, folks. My guess is the attack on Iran starts between Election Day and Jan 3rd, 2007, when the new Congress is sworn in and John Bolton’s recess appointment term as UN Ambassador expires.

  5. Brian Coughlan Says:

You guys have got to draw the line on this one. Roughly 70 million people live in Iran. If the US launches an attack, tens maybe hundreds of thousands of them will be killed.

Worse still, it could spark a wider conflagration that will kill millions. Don’t let this happen.

  9. Marie Says:

I read this article and it is chilling. However, it rings familiar, in that BushCo is using the same playbook as they did in Iraq and we all know how well that turned out.
The military is growing more alarmed as time goes on that we are all being taken down a path that the military sees as extremely risky. They had to lose 2500+ lives and thousands wounded, not to mention the $$cost of it all, before they began to come to their senses, but there is still no assurance that they will persuade the chickenhawk civilians at the Pentagon, the AWOL numbskull in the White House, and the braindead congress that war must be avoided in favor of diplomacy.
Bush’ version of diplomacy is “Do what I say first, then I will talk to you.”

In a dictatorship, the people have no recourse except “storming the Bastille”. The couple hundred of us in here wouldn’t get very far. And I don’t expect much from the sheeple. They are afraid of their own shadows. Why they sent other people to Iraq to fight their illegal war.

Why worry? Surely if intelligence is coming up with zilch on reasons to justify bombing Iran the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice band of rogues won’t procede with their agenda! I mean, after all–these are reasonable, rational, patriotic Americans. . . well, maybe not so reasonable and rational. . . . . and . . . . certainly not patriotic. . . . Oh *%#! I guess we do need to worry!

  16. purvis ames Says:

Has anyone considered that a pre-emptive air attack on Iran will not turn out quite the way they planned it? The Iranians will shut down the Strait of Hormuz immediately and attack Irag with a force of at least half a million men. The British contingent in Basra will be wiped out in a matter of hours, supply lines to Kuwait will be cut, and the already stretched out American forces will suffer the biggest defeat since Custer. The Pentagon knows this and they will not allow the now cerifiably insane president to carry out his hare-brained plans. Remember what happened with another insane dictator, Caligula, and his Praetorian Guard.

Sent out lot’s of emails and they passed it anyway. Many I am sure never even read the entire text of what they were signing and voting on. The same was true of the medacare bill they got the AARP to go along with 1500 pages of crap with lots of give aways to HMO’s and pharmacies and little Delay late night tuck in sentaces the night before they strong armed senators to vote for it…….Now we have the next night mare around the corner, along with the Israel, Palestine and quite possibly others we haven’t heard about yet..

On any Friday is what I am thinking..This rat pack will do as they please and unless some people get their heads out of their asses and stop them this administration will continue with it’s distruction.. Alls quiet about the DUBI ports deal, they are in operation just like they planned….Out of public view for the moment……How many citizens know nothing stoped that.

Just like the miserable little roaches we have viseting here, it’s time to turn the lights on and watch them scurry back under the cabinets.. It is our job to get out the aresol spray and hit all the dark areas they are hiding in….Time to clean house and fumigate…..Blessings

  28. Jay Randal Says:

Unfortunately the Senate is run by Frist, and the House by Hastert, who are both corrupt and in bed with whatever the Bush Regime desires to do on Iran! Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld have already made the decision to attack Iran before the November elections, and nobody in the Pentagon can stop them unless they want to do a coup to remove them from power! Iran is ZERO threat to the US, but they will lie worse then they did about Saddam’s Iraq! Only other chance to stop them is to call your Senators to demand that they impeach Bush and Cheney ASAP, before they attack Iran and ignite global WWIII!

  29. Doodle Bug Says:

#31, Have a happy and safe 4th, enjoy the BBQ & beer.

  32. Anchorage Activist Says:

Listen, folks, I’m a conservative, but I also believe any attack on Iran would be utterly insane. We barely have enough troops for Iraq as it is. We can’t get enough National Guard troops to assume responsibilities on our southern border. Out of sheer desperation, the U.S. Army raised the enlistment age limit first from 34 to 40, and now intends to raise it to 42 (hey, that must be how they want to solve the Social Security problem - sign up the AARPsters and send them to fight and die in imperial wars).

There are non-military alternatives. The former Crown Prince, Reza Pahlavi, is preparing to lead a resistance. The grandson of the late Ayatollah Khomeini wishes to do likewise. We do not need to invade the country.

Rumsfeld has got to go, period! He is the real problem in the Bush regime.

  35. truepatriot Says:

I find it ironic that our entire war-making/defense apparatus, the very practioners who’ve made off with untold billions from the U.S. taxpayer Treasury in Defense contracts-slash-oil profits, would ‘tap out’ on Iran. The Prez wants a war and by God there will be a war! God told him so!

This is America! We’re not Americans UNLESS we’re at war with something: one another, on Christmas, on drugs, on AIDS, class war, race war, on illiteracy, on Terror! It’s in our daily lexicon! Don’t go weak sister on us now, you mamby pamby sissies! We want our war and we want it now!!

    We ain’t a-happy unless we’re a-warrin’! FIGHT! FIGHT! AN A-RAB AND A WHITE!

We’re counting on you to begin a wider regional conflict in Central Asia so we can continue to piss of the Chinese and the Russians. Oh and while the Chinese turn the screws on us financially, keep raising the debt ceiling so’s we can bankrupt the U.S. Treasury as the Chinese service ALL — not some, ALL — of our foreign debt! Why stop now? We’re going to have one of the greatest flameouts in recorded history, we’re on pace to set a shockingly awesome new record & accelerate the greatest civilization in history’s downfall: in 10 years or less instead of the usual 500 or so. Don’t stop now, you’ve already totally f**ked it all up! Might as well go balls deep, the whole hog, the full monty! Might as well bat 1.000!

“We’ve never seen a middle Eastern country we didn’t like!”

But it was MUCH MORE IMPORTANT to settle, you know, Daddy’s Little Score with Saddam…meanwhile the real wackjobs on the planet in North Korea and Iran are wee-weeing all over themselves with their windfall luck that the U.S. chose to attack Iraq — a country that never did anything to the U.S., well, ever — instead of themselves in Iran and North Korea, who have shown — repeatedly, I might add — a distinct propensity to shall we say ‘irritate’ the United States, what with the Iranian hostage crisis and that little war over there in South Korea some years back…

Why stop now? The PNAC plan includes Iran! Iraq was payback for Daddy 41 and we’ll attack Iran as payback for the Iranian Hostage Crisis vis a vis the humiliation ol’ Ollie “Original Gangsta” North received with Admiral “Total Information Awareness” Poindexter over that little enabler of a program that flooded the Middle Eastern arms market with good ol’ American-made weaponry as NeoCon ’shut-up’ currency for the Hostage Crisis-slash-Reagan-gets-elected-bringing-the-hostages-home some years back. Or that the CIA propped up the Shah and sabotaged democratic elections in Iran, which paved the way for the Islamic Revolution that brought militant Islam to power there! Why acknowledge that mistakes were made? We’re NeoCons! We have a long history of fucking things up and eventually destroying them so’s we can sweep it under the carpet and let someone else deal with it when it blows up in our fucking faces again! I mean, really! Fuck it! Make Iran a parking lot! Better to dispense with it because it’s ‘evil’ and it’s ‘dangerous’ instead of accept some responsibility for what we did to them and try a little diplomacy instead!

(especially when we can’t afford another war spiritually or economically, something the military might be clued into finally — people’s whose jobs it is to MAKE war.)

(or maybe they see that class war is in effect, with the corporate & public sector elites pissing on the mostly poor huddled masses in the military, and endless warring in order to get rid of them — those pesky underclassmen! only there’s that little thing called the military honor code to keep your fellow GIs out of harm’s way AT ALL COSTS getting in the way.)

(or perhaps there’s no — stop me if you’ve heard this one before! — WMD’s in Iran, no WMD-making capability, that the fuckers really did want nuclear for *gasp* peaceful energy purposes!)

Unpopular war with Iraq? Our Emperor-slash-President: Start another one with Iran! Pure genius! Who makes this stuff up? Oh yeah, that’s right.. PNAC.

You know those people whom design weapons, sure we would have to send some folks from our weapons contractors, but it would be easier than war and alot less people would die..

Ya think cheney would go for that?

“Cryptorchids.” Indeed does describe some of the members of congress today. The rest of them have evidently undergone an orchiectomy, and are permanent eunuchs for Bush.
One of the more interesting words, which I, too, learned after many years in a medical-related field.

  42. Sharon Cox Says:

Good word Marie, I read about them in some old history book’s I think. The eunuchs were used to protect the concubines and wives of kings and rich men if I remember correctly. I can think of a few people I would like to help become eunuchs, it shoulden’t be to hard to hit one of those and two of them in one shot…LOL……..Good posts all…Blessings

Forgot to mention Wayne, I read some time ago that the Saudi prince and his wife had funnelled large amounts of cash to finance the terrorests involved with Ben Lauden and the 9/11 bunch…Does any one else remember that.? Iran may have been involved as well but it was the Saudi’s that were realy big backers……..If in fact we do go after Iran and then they inturn go after Saudi Arabia and Iraq, oh yes and us where in this mad mix is Israel, Palestine by proxemety, Germany and Great Briton… Oh I forgot, it’s armagedon the neo con’s are trying to bring on right after our econemy collapses and all the fat cat’s take their money and hid in underground bunkers. They will only be able to buy good’s from china and north korea by then. …All this has the makings of a lousy movie, and it’s only Monday.. Day 3 on upside down flag…..The general public (58). 46. Rebel With A Cause Says:

The US and Israel have had secret plans for ages to take over the Middle East. With the idiot neo-con move on Iraq, the full plan was set in motion.

Iran is considered the stronghold of the middle east but Bushco and Israel think they can bomb them into submission. They are not too worried about using ground forces. Their plan is to let Iran use ground forces and every move those forces make will be met with extensive bombing, perhaps back to the middle ages.

AFter Iran, the plans call for the seizure of Syria, then Yemen. Those nations with quasi democracies, such as Jordan and Egypt, will be saved for last. The thinking is that they will cave when they get a sense of what is happening.

Saudi Arabia? That is the lynchpin in the Bush scheme of things. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia will be the Middle East Expeditionary Force Headquarters. We will have troops in the region for years to come.

Of course, these are puke plans and can easily be upset by the upcoming elections of 2006 and 2008.

  47. Aurore Says:

For a while there, I was preparing for the worst, assuming that Bush was champing at the bit to start a war with Iran as part of some End of Times scenario that he’s stuck on.

Then the MSM got wind of his plans, and sanity seemed to prevail. The story scared the begeezus out of the most con of the neo con and it looked like Bush would have to (gasp!) use diplomacy.

Now Hersh is saying that the plans are still on the table. While a previous poster was correct when he said that the Senate signed away their power to authorize war, we can still stop this madness. Power or no power, Bush is not in a position to go ahead if the leaders of Congress, especially the Republicans stand up and say “No.”

We have to put tons of pressure on our representatives and the MSM to take a stand for the sake of the future our country and the world. While getting the MSM and Congress to go along with invading Iraq was the real cakewalk, I don’t think it will be this time. But we have to be ready to pull out all the stops and do everything we can to prevent this from happening.

  48. Aurore Says:

    PS.

Rupert Murdoch and the other big media and business barons that have been backing Bush may be evil, but they aren’t stupid. A war with Iran would, except for GE, cut into profits and ruin their plans for building their 40,000 square foot dream houses.

I’m hoping that in this case, greed will triumph over politics and that Bush will find that the rats will desert the ship faster than you can say “bombs away.”

It’s up to us to realize that they are not going to do that and to shut the country down while demanding the removal of this out of control government and major changes to reclaim a system of government not run by corporations and the pentagon. We can start by camping out around the White House in growing numbers through the Summer. If we go, others will join us!

  54. Dogtown Says:

The People elected Bush. Bush then builds a Cabinet to support the policies he was elected to pursue. Members of this Cabinet have conflicting opinions on how Iran shall be addressed, and Condi Rice seems to be winning this battle, and her advocacy for a diplomatic route is at the forefront. As such, the military being used in Iran is a longshot, at best. But if it is used, it will be used appropriately by the individuals elected to do so.

If you don’t like this system of governance, please go elsewhere.

  55. Rebel With A Cause Says:

    PLUNGER

I agree with you to the max. Israel does not want peace, does not seek peace, and their sole aim, backed by GWB is to foment and keep war on the table.

Notice how, emboldened by Gushco, Israel keeps inciting war on the Palestinians. Using you so called “false flags” system, they keep the region in turmoil and will do so until the end of time.

Recall that Bush stated that he had a “road map” for peace in that region. It meant nothing except a signal to Israel to continue their efforts to take over that portion of the world. Bush says nothing about that of course, because he and the Israelis want to take over the middle east.

The road block in this plan is amurka being bogged down in Iraq. It was not supposed to be this way, it was to be quick, concise and easy. What happened?
Due to the ignorance of all in the administration they decided it was best to rush into Baghdad and capture Hussein. Wrongo. It was best to capture and guard each ammo dump to the max.

Unknowingly, the administration armed the insurgents, but will never admit it.
