katy, did you read the link you supplied? Joe stated that he believed that hospitals who did not want to supply contraceptives for rape victims on grounds of ‘principle’ shouldn’t be required to do so.
Needless to say, the constituency of Connecticut are not terribly happy with this stance, especially since 78% of them think that emergency contraception should be avaliable at Catholic hospitals. The fact that Boxer supports such a candidate is manifestly disappointing.

Hussain al-Shahristani added that production was expected to rise to 2.7 million bpd by the end of the year.
“We have been able to break records,” he said of the government, which has been in place for just over a month.
Before the war, output was around 3 million bpd, peaking at a record of 3.5 million bpd…”

What these people fail to understand is that it’s not in Dubya & Company’s interests to get the oil out, but rather to keep it right where it is…under the sand. Witholding some of the supply makes the oil they legitimately own more valuable.

July 5th, 2006 at 10:32 pmAl Gore made only one mistake in the 2000 election. According to the Constitution, it is the right of the states to select nominees to the electoral college. The Supremes overstepped their authority in severing a recount of the results which has subsequently shown that W lost in Florida. The Supremes vacated the recount based on selectivity rather then opting for expanding its basis. Al should have challenged that decision. The dubious and illegal decision delivered by a mere five partisans, has resulted in well over one hundred thousand deaths, 5500 of them, Americans.

(Not that it matters….unless something changes radically, the Repubs are just going to steal the 2008 election like they did the 2004 and 2000 elections. Hell…between the improved skill that comes with practice, and the ever-increasing apathy and hopelessness of the American public, every election just gets easier for them to rig.)

The far-right tried to steal the election, with help from American Bush Regime cronies, but now the whole thing is backfiring on Mexico’s elite who have been exposed in fraud trying to get their stooge Calderon in as president! We must all cross our fingers that Obrador wins, because he truely wants to help the poor in Mexico, which wouldl lesson them to flee into the US seeking low-paid jobs! Have you watched Nora O’Donnell substituting for Chris Matthews for the last week or so? I think she asks far more penetrating questions than anyone, all while being easy on the eyes. If MSNBC doesn’t give her a show, Fox News or CNN should grab her while they can.
July 6th, 2006 at 9:05 amNora does an ok job, I think she tends to lean right however. I watched her interview Cindy Sheehan yesterday and she did a good job. Cindy annoys me however, she lost me when she starting carrying water for Hugo Chavez, that guy is a dictator and a tyrant.

Oh yes….fantastically ‘penetrating’ questions, such as asking if Cindy Sheehan has become ‘a puppet of the left’, and asking her directly if her hunger protest is ‘just a publicity stunt’. Penetrating, indeed.
all while being easy on the eyes.
Because, of course, that’s a prime requirement of a newsperson…much more important than objectivity and fairness.
If MSNBC doesn’t give her a show, Fox News or CNN should grab her while they can.
At least here we’re in agreement…Nora would fit right in at Faux News.

July 6th, 2006 at 9:21 amSince BushCo can’t plop just anyone from the ‘crony-pool’ into the ‘cybersecurity czar’ post, the scrutiny the ‘appointee’ would get could not withstand it, filling the post is just too damn hard, so they don’t. Not that they care about real security measures, as if!

Just because what he says about Bush warms your heart you can’t turn a blind eye to his human rights abuses, the fact that there is no free press, etc.. Don’t turn this into a Bush bash, do your reading on Chavez.
July 6th, 2006 at 9:31 am#83, TripMaster Monkey,
My point exactly! Instead of dancing around the worst criticisms of her guests, she confronts the issues directly. giving those interviewed a chance to address those criticisms. She did the same thing to Republican Majority Whip John Boehner, all with a disarming smile and piercing eyes, that seem to force confessions out of her guests. She only seems right leaning when interviewing liberals, but her visible upset yesterday at Lieberman being challenged shows her preference for the old guard of the Democratic Party.
July 6th, 2006 at 9:32 am#86, onthefence,
Most “progressives” are actually socialists, who believe civil rights only apply to other socialists, and not applied to free market, free speech capitalists.
July 6th, 2006 at 9:34 amReply to #86:
Don’t turn this into a Bush bash, do your reading on Chavez.
Perhaps you ought to do some reading yourself.
July 6th, 2006 at 9:35 am#89 Thanks for wasting 1:30 of my life. This doesn’t prove or disprove anything. A big part of Chavez’s popularity is because of his inflammatory rhetoric towards the US and his manipulation of nationlistic urges. You know Bush once had approval levels in the 70’s, that doesn’t mean he a good president.
You guys can defend him all you want, socialism sounds great on paper but it doesn’t work. Just like unregulated free-market capitalism doesn’t work, there’s a middle ground somewhere. The only difference between Chavez and all of the other two-bit dictators that have been running South America for the past 50 years is that he doesn’t take his marching orders from us.
July 6th, 2006 at 9:49 amJust because what he says about Bush warms your heart you can’t turn a blind eye to his human rights abuses, the fact that there is no free press, etc.. Don’t turn this into a Bush bash, do your reading on Chavez.
Comment by onthefence — July 6, 2006 @ 9:31 am
Jesus, this had me rolling in the aisles. Do your reading!!!! Chavez has been elected several times, in undisputed elections by enviable majorities.
The support he enjoys among the electorate is a politicians wet dream, and something that Bush will never see. Please provides sources for the insane assertion that there is no free press in Venezuala.
Finally, you really are a fool. I don’t often use such strong language, but that epithet is deserved. You are a grade A, full blown, government inspected fool for posting what you did
July 6th, 2006 at 10:00 amA big part of Chavez’s popularity is because of his inflammatory rhetoric
Excuse me, are you saying he is or isn’t a dictator? Was or was he not elected? You understand the concept? People vote, the votes get counted, the guy with the most votes gets to be in charge?
He specifically is he a dictator?

Again, sources? Because the United States and not Venezuela is currently being reprimanded for our human right violations, and lack of free speech.
I have read up on Chavez – just not from conservative sources who twists the truth.
This has nothing to do with Bush. Stop trying to make it.

Sorry, but calling Cindy Sheehan a ‘puppet of the left’ and charaterizing her hunger strike against the war in Iraq as ‘a publicity stunt’ are not valid ‘criticisms’…they are outright personal attacks…worthy of Brit Hume or Bill O’Reilly, but not of an honest journalist.

Your non-serious posts are offensive, but your serious posts are hysterical.

Hah! Just noticed this and couldn’t resist a dig. The guy with the most votes gets to be in charge, except in archaic 18th century electoral systems like …. hmmm let me think … oh yours:-)

I was simply referring to Anderson Cooper being boyishly cute, and having a certain charm, strictly surface stuff. It doesn’t matter if he’s gay or not (I didn’t realize there was speculation about that), he’s still adorable. I don’t watch him much, but his coverage of Katrina was exceptional.
July 6th, 2006 at 10:10 amYeah, Hugo Chavez is a real monster, all right! Only a madman would offer to sell low cost heating oil to low income Americans, to keep them from freezing to death last winter, because Big Oil had to make a huge profit, you know. Yup, pure evil. And this ‘dictator’ (snort) was democratically elected, twice! Just like GWB. Is he a ‘dictator’ too? And Pat Robertson calling for his murder, on his TV show, no less, proves he is no tyrant, or Pat would be in business with him. Just like he is with Charles Taylor, a TRUE tyrant.

Read this.
Here is the definition of a dictator from dictionary.com
1.
1. An absolute ruler.
2. A tyrant; a despot.
2. An ancient Roman magistrate appointed temporarily to deal with an immediate crisis or emergency.
3. One who dictates: These initials are those of the dictator of the letter.
So Chavez doesnt have abolsute power?
I think deep down you guys only carry water for him because he hates Bush, well the enemy of my enemy doesn’t make him my friend. Being blinded in such a way makes you an idealogue and therefore not much better than Sean Hannity.

Hey there onthefence, I’m sorry about the fool thing, heat of the moment.
If you are at least a little objective, you’ll see you made a mistake about Chavez. He plays hard ball sure, but within the laws of his country, and he is no dictator. You were played by whatever media outlets you frequent and that should make you very angry.
My advice is to vary your sources. Take nothing as given, and when you hear something outrageous try and find an opposing view for balance. Oh and never ever read anything by Ann Coulter, that’s just bad karma.
So Chavez doesnt have abolsute power?
No Chavez doesn’t have absolute power.
I think deep down you guys only carry water for him because he hates Bush
Oh I’m sure you are right about that, I love to see him stand up to Bush!!! However, the primary reason we defend him is because it’s so easy, he is an undisputed elected leader. You coming here and saying he is a dictator simply makes you look like the on that is blinded and uniformed. For example, you have yet to provide anything substantial to support your incorrect allegations. This is why you got the deserved savaging you got.
It’s hard to admit you were played, but it’s better to do it rather than to obtusley insist that black is white and up is down. It’s also the adult thing to do.

So Brian what does that prove other than that poor, uneducated people are easily manipulated by either Bush or Chavez by exploiting their fears and channeling their outrage into votes.
You know the people who signed their names to get the referendum vote in 2004 are now “blacklisted”, being denied jobs and social services. But hey, that’s your version of a socialist utopia right?

This exposes an nasty elitest and frankly anti democratic seam in your thinking. However, I’ll concede there is some merit to your comment. The difference between Bush and Chavez though, is that Hugo has actually delivered on his campaign promises. Poverty is down, education is up, health care is improved and the economy is growing despite the US intensly disliking Chavez.
That is why people continue to relect him, and defend him. He champions there cause. Why the american electorate elected Bush again is a mystery. Potentially because the US system eliminates the poor from voting by criminalising them and purging them from voter rolls. You are aware that the US imprison 7 times as many people as any other developed world country?
You don’t have a farts chance in a hurricane of coming out of this discussion looking either moderate, “on the fence” or even rational. Plus you are boring me. So unless you have something concrete to contribute, beyond right wing talking points, why not run along. Theres a good chap.
July 6th, 2006 at 1:01 pm#109 So Brian what does that prove other than that poor, uneducated people are easily manipulated by either Bush or Chavez by exploiting their fears and channeling their outrage into votes.
Well, also proves that Chávez is less of a tyrant than Bush. Chávez was elected, Bush got appointed by the Supreme Court, who, in turn stopped the recount in the state governed by Jeb Bush by a Bush family loyalist. Chávez is populist? Sure. But Chávez uses exactly the same tools that uses Bush. So, please, do some cleaning in your house first…
You know the people who signed their names to get the referendum vote in 2004 are now “blacklistedâ€, being denied jobs and social services. But hey, that’s your version of a socialist utopia right?
Comment by onthefence — July 6, 2006 @ 11:24 am
As said, Venezuela isn’t an utopia. But at least, Chávez is using the money of the oil of his country to benefit the poor people. Be it because he honestly want to help them, or because he wants to preserve the poor’s vote, he at least benefits the poor, and not only some Kenny Boy or Exxon President who gives lots of $$$ to his campaing.
And “blacklisted”? You mean as have been “blacklisted” Murtha, Sheehan, Michael Moore, Ed Kennedy, and many others for not being in sintony with the GOP? Or the appointment of cozy people in important places, like Brown or Chertoff?
July 6th, 2006 at 1:09 pmcorrection.
