Sheriff Requires Jailed Immigrants to Listen to ‘Patriotic Songs,’ Wear Pink Underwear
Yesterday on Fox’s The Big Story, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio described how he jails hundreds of immigrants and subjects them to degrading treatment. Arpaio says he dresses jailed immigrants in pink underwear, pink handcuffs and a stripped jumpsuit. He also forces them to listen to “patriotic songs” multiple times a day. Watch it:
Arpaio’s prison has also been the site of multiple controversial inmate deaths.

SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO, MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ: Yesterday, by the way, I have 1,000 illegals in a jail out of 10,000, including 2,000 we have in tents, so yesterday I started a new program, everyone will have to listen to the national anthem and god bless America. We did it four times yesterday, but every day from now on, in the morning, at night, they’ll listen to the patriotic songs.

BANDERAS: Apparently you dress them up in colorful jumpsuit, tell me about that?
ARPAIO: We’ve been doing that for six years, we put them in pink underwear and striped uniforms and pink handcuffs.
BANDERAS: Why the pink underwear?
ARPAIO: They were stealing the white underwear several years ago, smuggling it out of the jail. So I dyed the underwear pink because they hate pink, especially in this county they hate pink. Why give them a color they like?
BANDERAS: Why would you, that’s a great question. All right, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, thank you very much. Keep it up, I guess.

If inmates were stealing clothes, making it an undesirable color seems to be a cheap way to save money and the hassle of buying new clothes. It is prison afterall — inmates shouldn’t have a choice of color! But the forced patriotic songs? That’s just a completely silly waste of time. Also, I’m hoping the same treatment is for ALL prisoners and not just the illegals. Otherwise, I would disagree with singling them out for this extra “punishment.”

And I would add that most of the people who live in the former crime-ridden county of Maricopa County, Arizona keep returning him to office time and again. I would suggest that the next democratic president strongly consider him for Director of Federal Prisons. The people of America would really like some of his prison reforms.

cently, Joe Arpaio has stated on FOX News as well as radio stations that he is deporting illegal aliens back to Mexico if they have committed felonies. He has deported over one hundred to date, and has gained largely public support for doing so.

He has fewer repeat offenders, though, compared to many other counties. They don’t want to go back. And his programs, like his volunteer posse has curbed crime, car theft, and assaults in Phoenix. As for his jail, so far, he has worked in the bounds of the constitution. And the taxpayers are not being asked to buy chicken dinners, cable television, and new underwear every week. Prisoners are not being mistreated and Joe doesn’t condone brutality. Green boglona and sleeping in a tent is not cruel and unusal punishiment. If it is, then our troops in Iraq are being terribly abused!

I don’t think the Marines in AnBar Province, Iraq have much sympathy for the inhumane treatment they are receiving. At least as they are county guests in the 115 degree heat, they don’t have to pack a full 100 pound combat load at the same time.

You who would criticize Sheriff Arpaio are the same ones who overlook the treatment of those at Gitmo and the treatment of convicted felons who spent their prison time in Aspen where deaths occur as well. Don’t look at one ot two small result of the criminal activities of the BushCo and blame the Liberals, Democrats, and free thinking individuals for the cause. If you don’t like the methods of Sheriff Arpaio don’t commit a crime in Maricopa County, Arizona. That’s what I like about progressives. We can all disagree without resorting to name calling until a troll shows up. That said, bushllit, the law is this: the job of a penal institution is to incarcerate. Not punish. Being incarcerated IS the punishment. First rule a correctional officer learns.
As for Joe Apio, he pushes the constitution to the extreme. So far, with all the law suits from the ACLU and such, he has previaled in most instances. While his job is not to punish, neither is it to pamper. He’s tough. And that is the one thing all inmates respect; his no nonsense, tough love approach. I am sure we would all do something different.
And by the way, I mentioned a few days ago that I was arrested myself and locked up so I can understand and empathize to a degree. I spent five days in jail for not paying a $25 dollar parking fine when I had just returned home from the service and had no money or job after paying my rent and trying to find a job. Two of those days were in the drunk tank waiting to go in front of the judge. It sucked. Especially when the rich, well-heeled guys were paying their fines and going home, and us poor dudes were serving it out behind bars at $5 a day. So don’t talk to me about jails and courts being fair.
As for Joe Apio. He’s just making sure guys like me don’t want to come back.

1. The “Patriotic Songs” lasted for one day (7/5/06,) totaling 2 hours, and it was just as, if not more, annoying for the staff.
2. Tent City is for sentenced inmates only. All unsentenced inmates are housed indoors.
3. The inmates still try to steal the pink undies; they sell on ebay, along with the Chain Gang completion certificates.
4. Chain Gang is completely voluntary; inmates sign up because it is a last resort for them to avoid being housed indoors permanently. Apparently, they like being outside better.
5. As for the “green baloney,” the inmate should register a complaint before they leave the chow line. The officer will exchange the “Ladmo” bag.
Say what you will but, Hart v. MCSO brought about a lot of changes and progression in inmate’s rights and priviledges. No institution is perfect, and the changes in policies usually work out better for the inmates then the staff. Also, the voters of Maricopa county elect the Sheriff. If people aren’t happy with the results, they should find a viable candidate and campaign for them.

I have no problem with Sherrif Joe’s treatment of prisoners in regards to the humilation of the color pink or living in tents etc….do the crime, pay the time (as it should be). I do however take an issue with the federal government in this instance. Why is the state of Arizona paying for the incarceration of these illegals. Isn’t it U.S Government’s policy (as indicated by DHS) to deport ALL illegals. How much taxpayers’ money is being used to feed and cloth these illegal immigrants. This is more important to me than the humiliating treatment. They are here illegally, why are we feeding and clothing them…SEND THEM HOME.
P.S I consider myself more liberal than conservative (registered independent) but there are some things where common sense should rule and not partisan politics.

But blaring patriotic songs at illegal immigrants just bugs the hell out of me. What is it supposed to accomplish? Do we want to remind them that it’s illegal to enter the country without permission? OK, I think they knew that. Does this make them want to become legal immigrants? I doubt it. Does Sheriff Joe swell with patriotic pride when he wields “God Bless America” like a billy club?
And #50, God bless the troops for their service, but it’s totally irrelevant to the issue. Just because some people have very hard jobs and do them thanklessly in service to the country doesn’t mean other people can’t expect to be treated humanely by the country.

There are worse people in the world than Joe Arpaio; infact, he’s done many good things as a public servant. But it’s mostly just publicity whoring and juvenile bullshit like the underwear fetish.

And they could only watch certain shows on tv. Also, I dont see anything wrong with this as many years back Arizona was having serious problems in the prisons and it is a factualised theory that pink subdues and calms the mind/emotions.

My sister, a department store employee with no priors, basically made an illegal U-Turn in the middle of the night and had the misfortune of hitting a cop going in the opposite direction. The details are hazy, as there were no witnesses, but I can tell you this: the cop she hit had been in three other accidents in the two years prior to the accident. Sis got a year in tent city for assault with a deadly weapon. Thank goodness she was off the streets. She came out a lot more cynical than she came in. The world needs more cynics.

I went to the sheriffs office and asked for their report and a copy of the autopsy. They let me read the report, but would not give me a copy. The report said no autopsy was performed.
I was told by people around town that, although required by law, autopsies were not performed because the sheriffs office would not pay for them.
I found the coroners office was doing its job, doing the autopsies, but not turning them over to the sheriff because he would not pay for them.
The guy is a nut case. An ambulance driver told me a story that one time the sheriff showed up and there was a dead body in the street. The sheriff told them to report it as a hit and run. Before the sheriff left they turned the body over and found a bullet hole in the stomach. The sheriff told them “I said it was a hit and run, OK”. The apparent murder was never investigated.
This guy reeks of graft and corruption. He keeps jailing more and more people, and asking for more and more dollars, and fights anyone tooth, nail and hammer who wants to look into his budget.

July 7th, 2006 at 2:11 amI got to spend a weekend as a guest of Joe’s back in 2000 while they straightened out a shooting I had nothing to do with. The pink underwear thing isn’t new. Nor is Joe’s ability to feed an inmate on less than $1/day. Nor are the conditions in the jail. Nor are the bizzare videos an music. When I was there his big thing was reading bedtime stories on the closed circuit TV.
None of it does anything to prevent recidivism. It does make the blue hairs in the area feel better though that unconvicted inmates are subjected to degrading treatment.

It gets hot in them, but no hotter then the tents our soldiers camp in in the deserst of Iraq, and they wear full battle gear. The chain gangs are voluntary for prisoners. You don’t have to work on the gang, there is always 23 hour lock down. I don’t care what jail you are at, ask the inmates about the food. They all complain and say its rotten and green. Somewhere along the way, this country has made the prisson system inviting. By doing these things, he has one of the lowest return rates for convics, and has a great drug rehab program with an even lower return rate, and has a highschool program to help inmates get an education so when they are released they might be able to get a job, and become a decent member of society. Its tough love, and its proven to be working.
