Get paid

to recycle your old cell phone. (And do something good for the environment.)

Getting gift certificates from Treehugger is good for the environment? Alrighty.

  2. dlet says:

Good site. Put it in my favorites file. Thanks.

  3. Zooey says:

We have a program at the local domestic violence shelter where people can donate their old cell phones. Pretty cool.

  4. dlet says:

I guess Seixon is too used to going to oildrinker.com.

  5. Govinda says:

I’m confused… what would the gift certificates get you? I see nothing for sale on the Terrapass website.

  6. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Zooey:

I’ve donated every obselete cellphone I’ve ever had (back to an old bag-phone I inhereted from a friend) to shelters. Rather than try to pry the precious metals out of them, as TerraPass advocates, it might be a better use of them to insure as many people as possible have free access to 911.

    Sexion:

Actually, TerraPass is the organization offering the gift certificates (through their partnership with RIPMobile.)

  7. Spudge_Boy says:

    No.

Recycling your phone to get the gift certificate is.

    God your stupid.

  8. Lily says:

dlet, and apparently considers T-shirts bad for the environment.

RIPMobile will issue you RIPMobile “points” for the value of these phones – a point is worth a dollar. YOU tell us how you want to spend the points, and we will issue you gift certificates for the vendors you select. You can get almost anything from hot music to cool clothes to electronics or games – whatever you want – there are literally millions of choices available. Current entertainment partners include MSN Music, with over 1 million songs to choose from, Ringtonejukebox, with thousands of fresh ringtones, games and screensavers, and Karmaloop’s cool urban clothes. We’ll be adding new partners with choices in the coming weeks, so check back when you get the points for your phones, you may have even more to choose from.

I think Sexion just jumped the gun trying to be the first comment, and be able to come up with something witty to offend us. In the rush to come up with something clever, Sexion only managed to look like an idiot.. again.

  11. dlet says:

    #9 is from RIPMobile’s website.

  12. Zooey says:

    TripMasterMonkey,

I’m you’re doing that. I’ve never owned a cell phone, but if I ever do, when I’m done with it, I’ll donate it to the shelter. ;)

  13. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Reply to 11:

Agreed. Seixon has been uncharacteristically reserved on this thread since his initial outburst.

I can’t explain why, however. It can’t be that he’s embarassed, as he has shown time and again that he is without shame.

  14. bs says:

are you serious tp? why would this make ‘big news’? sounds like msm is dabbling in your website. this has been going on forever and frankly you gives a shit. recycle or throw em. EASY, ISN’T IT—– NOT BIG NEWS. especially compared to the destablization of our america and given over to the rothchilds without fight.

THAT CALLS FOR GIVE ME A FRICKEN BREAK. LIKE OLBERMANN WOULD SAY ‘ MY PRODUCERS ARE MAKING ME DO THIS AND I WISH I DIDN’T HAVE TO’ RING TRUTH HERE??????

  15. Spudge_Boy says:

    bs,

This is not “big news” by any means. Only a heads up. You can tell that it is not big news, because it was religated to a “little grey box” status.

  16. Zooey says:

Apparently bs expects to always find “big news” on TP. Must be doing something right, TP.

  17. james risser says:

just a thought…while recycling phones is cool and groovy and quite ‘progressive’, it might be of more significant to give a shout-out to war crimes, lies, and the end of civilization:

Victim was just 14 when she was raped and killed by US soldiers

The young Iraqi woman who five US soldiers are accused of raping and killing on March 12 was 14 years old, not over 20, as US officials have said.

US court documents described Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi, who was shot dead along with her sister and parents, as an “adult female” and estimated her age as 25. Local officials and relatives had said she was 15 or 16, but her identity card and a copy of her death certificate show she was born on August 19, 1991 in Baghdad.

Her identity card, issued in 1993, features a photograph of her at 18 months, wide-eyed and with a lick of dark hair over her brow.

A copy of her death certificate gives the same birth date.

have a great day! i see the norwegian is going to be around today, so, i think i’ll just come back later when it smells better in here.

  18. bs says:

    spudge boy,

exactly, so why even run this. heads up? this has been going on for years. i have been doing this for years. just go to your local cellular plus or verizon or just pick and choose. ok, so this particular co. is new or what? i’m just saying we could exercise our news space with news not leaning towards the msm.

    that’s all.

  19. bs says:

    zooey

worthwhile news/heads up news (spudge boy) i understand. this is OLD news.

  20. Jay Randal says:

Good now I can get rid of my old worthless cell phone > lol.

  21. Seixon says:

    dlet,

Seeing as how I haven’t even driven a car since last summer, and only walk or use public transportation, I think the “oildrinker.com” crack would be more representative of you and most others on here rather than me.

    Spudge_Boy,

Yes, recycling cellphones is a good idea, but what’s TerraPass got to do with it? Why can’t I just recycle the phone? Why does anyone have to be lured into recycling an old cellphone so they can get stuff from TerraPass? In other words, “paid” to do it? Why is Think Progress mentioning that specific company? Pay for play?

  22. dlet says:

    #22,
I guess one generality deserves another. I don’t own a car myself and use mass transit. How about peatburner.com then?

  23. Doodle Bug says:

I was told in germany they use Hydrogen phones you just fill them up with a syringe of water

  24. Xbot says:

Seixon – it’s to entice people. It’s the same reason you get a 10c refund for recycling cans. It’s to motivate you to do it.

Not all areas have places to drop recycled phones off. This service is great for those areas, and for some who just kind of have an old phone laying around, but really need some kind of motivation to do it.

Yes, recycling cans/phones is a fantastic way to help the environment – but that doesn’t mean everyone’s going to do it. Most people need some kind of incentive. If your parents told you to not do something and that’s it, you would do it anyway. If they told you to not do something and you’d get something positive, like ice cream, then you are clearly more likely to listen to them. That’s the objective here.

TP is mentioning it because it’s something that helps the environment. It’s something that progressives are concerned about, and really, all of humanity should be concerned about – and that is the environment. To insult them for pointing out a service that helps the environment is not progressive or helpful at all. They are helping the environment, I’m sure, by doing this. Some people are going to be giving their old cell phones to this company thanks to the above post.

If you hate the environement, just say so and get the crap out of TP. We’re for leaving a world for our grandchildren (or in my case – a world for ME to live in), and if you don’t support that goal, don’t comment on it. This is to help a cause, and if you’d use your head a little, you’d recognize that.

  25. Zooey says:

    Xbot,

    From the mouths of babes…
    You are a wise person.

  26. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Reply to Xbot:

Xbot, are you a fellow Michigander? I know that at one point, Michigan was the only state with a 10-cent refund on cans and bottles, but since then, other states may have followed our example.

I also know that this refund law makes Michigan the cleanest state in regards to cans and bottles lying about…the first time I ever travelled out of state, I was horrified by the sheer profusion of discarded cans and bottles littering the roadways.

While recycling phones is certainly a good idea and the responsible thing to do, it doesn’t hurt to offer an incentive. In fact, it usually helps quite a bit….most people can be counted on to act in their own best interests, if they can’t necessarily be counted on to act in the planet’s best interests.

… the reason why a thread about recycling cell phones is posted on TP…

  28. WaltTheMan says:

    #22 – Seixon,
If you reference post 303 in this thread, you will notice that you did not even use public transportation as of june, 19th. There you said:

    Walt,

Then, am I correct in believing that your living quarters are unheated and you swam to Norway

Seeing as unbelievable is supposedly a high school science teacher, and presumably has to use some method of transportation to arrive at her place of work, that already puts her way beyond my “gluttonous” emissions. I have no car, I walk every where I need to go, and the only electricity I use is to power my PC, make food, warm water, and provide lighting. I rarely need to use any power for heating, usually only in the coldest part of winter. I flew to Norway on a commercial jet: unlike Sir Al “Our Ability to Live is at Stake” Gore.

  29. WaltTheMan says:

    Sorry about post #29.
Here is the correct thread. Again – post 303.

  30. Xbot says:

#27: Yeap, I am. Every week I take the cans over to a store downtown. It’d be difficult to carry them on my own, and it costs money for gas to get there – so the 10c refund ends up being an actual refund more than a reward.

The only issue I have with the current Michigan law on this can issue is that not all cans are accepted – as far as I know, they only refund caffenated drinks. The store downtown takes all those cans and recycles them anyway, but nobody gets a refund for them (you leave them in a cart that they leave there just for cans that the machine won’t accept).

I hardly see any cans around in Michigan, because throwing away a can, under Michigan law, is equated to throwing away money, even as small the amount is.

  31. Seixon says:

    WaltTheMan,

As of June 19th, I had not used public transportation for quite some time. Since then I have taken the bus a few times, once taking a taxi so that I would make it on time to take a long-distance bus. Is this problematic?

It would seem that WaltTheMan has access to the Think Progress Wordpress installation, since I can’t comprehend how you would remember where that post was, or be able to dig it up that quickly.

  32. WaltTheMan says:

    #32 – Seixon,
I merely remembered the post. It struck me as funny. Just Googled – (Seixon Murtha WaltTheMan car). I guess it depends on what the meaning of what “every where” means.

  33. Seixon says:

Why would you Google “Seixon Murtha WaltTheMan car”??? How did you know that it was the Murtha thread? Doesn’t sound very convincing to me.

I guess it depends on what the meaning of what “every where” means.

Well obviously I didn’t mean that I walk tens or hundreds of miles when I need to travel that far. I usually walk to get to places I need to get to, but if I’m in a hurry I take the bus. Usually I’m not in a hurry, so I walk. Not to mention that the minimum bus fare is around $4, even when I usually only need to ride for 1-2km. I like saving money.

  34. WaltTheMan says:

    #34 – Sexion,
    I have a near-photographic memory. It’s that simple.

  35. Seixon says:

    I have a near-photographic memory. It’s that simple.

That’s not what Occam’s Razor says, but whatever. I mean, it’s pretty obvious that TP does have sock puppets here.

  36. WaltTheMan says:

Occam’s Razor merely states that the best choice is the simplest. It has nothing to do with memory.

  37. Xbot says:

#35: People remember things by keywords. That’s why most search engines run on keywords and not titles of pages or even description text – they’re turning more and more to searcing the content too, because the human memory remembers keywords more often than titles, or descriptions etc.

WaltTheMan remembering that is not incredibly unusual. What is unusual, though, is how out of context relating you and Murtha is very amusing.

  38. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Reply to Xbot:

What’s really amusing here is that WaltTheMan caught Seixon in an outright lie, and instead of attempting to defend himself, Seixon immediately responds with a personal attack on WaltTheMan, accusing him of being a ‘TP sockpuppet’ (Seixon’s latest pigeonhole for anyone who gets the better of him in a debate, which these days, is quite a few).

  39. Xbot says:

    Reply to TripMaster Monkey

Yes, but I was ignoring that part of the joke and referring to another, less noticable one.

As for debating? In order for a debate to be truly won or lost, one side must concede that the other is right. Officially at least – I think the better idea is when one side turns to insulting the other party when that party has clearly been cornered. But then again, if we changed it to that definition, conservatives would be calling liberals biased because we win debates all the time :/
