Top White House Staffers Pocket $4,200 Raise, Fight $2 Minimum Wage Increase

This year the highest paid staffers in the White House – including Karl Rove, Dan Bartlett and Steven Hadley – got a cost-of-living adjustment of $4,200, boosting their total salary to $165,200.

Meanwhile, the White House is backing Congressional efforts to beat back a modest increase in the minimum wage for the lowest paid Americans for the first time since 1997. Here’s a press release issued today by Rep. George Miller (D-CA):

For the fifth time in less than two weeks, Republicans in the House of Representatives today voted to block a vote on legislation to increase the national minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour…

A full-time minimum wage worker earns just $10,712 per year - which is $5,888 less than the $16,600 needed to lift a family of three above the federal poverty threshold…the minimum wage is at its lowest level in more than 50 years, when adjusted for inflation. Congress has not raised the federal minimum wage since 1997.

The good news is, after a hard day making sure that the working poor don’t get a pay increase, Karl Rove will have some extra cash for a nice dinner and a foot massage.

Consider it incentive to work harder and get a job above minimum wage.

Then who will flip your burgers Sponge Bob?

  3. Yikes Says:

I wonder how far $10,712 a year gets you in Norway?

  4. unbelievable Says:

I know you won't get my message, so I'll just spell it out. We need people to do all kinds of jobs. If everyone were doctors, lawyers and computer programmers who would empty garbage cans, change lightbulbs and flip burgers?

Because these people provide a service to our communitites, they should be paid a wage they can live on.

  5. Seixon Says:

    Judd,

You're not insinuating that giving a pay raise for a select few has the same implications for the country as does raising the minimum wage $2, are you? Sure hope not.

I agree that Congress and the White House should not be getting pay raises, but believing that a $2 hike in the minimum wage will be all roses and glory is not factually supported.

  6. Destroy the DLC Says:

Never in a million years would they get away with this if it weren't for immigrants.

And if you pay everyone the same or similar wages, whats the point of going thru all the effort to be a doctor, when the burger flippers job is so much easier and less stressed?

  10. Bad Brainz Says:

Since it isn't roses and glory, they still shouldn't get it? I guess those corporations can't afford a pay raise. Or is it, since the taxpayers are the ones flipping the bill for the administration's salaries, no biggie.

  11. onthefence Says:

The raise was about 2.5%, which is pretty crappy if you ask me.

Not saying the minimum wage shouldn't be increased, I'm all for it. But let's not make a big deal about Rove's cost of living raise.

  12. lib4 Says:

For the working poor this is unjust

Even if you add the minimum wage annual salary of $10,712 to Rove's $4200 raise and you STILL fall short of the poverty line by $1688.00 or $140/month......

In one fell swoop Rove et al receive 40 PERCENT of the annual salary of a person living at the minimum wage....

It would be like someone getting $64000 in one lump sum based on Rove's current salary....

    Unjust .....

Good one! You think if we raise the minimum wage a couple of dollars, those making minimum wage will be making as much as doctors and lawyers?

  14. dlet Says:

    Squeeg,
Where in the heck has anyone said mininum wage should be at a level a doctor makes. Jesus that is the worst straw man attempt I have seen in a while. You are getting rusty. Mininum wage should be set at a level that doesn't put you in poverty. It is not there at the moment. That is the discussion.

  15. unbelievable Says:

And if you pay everyone the same or similar wages
    Comment by squegeeboo — July 11, 2006 @ 3:32 pm

Stop being ridiculous. Nobody said "the same wages".

At $7.25 and hour do you know how many hours a day you'd have to work to make a $165,200 yearly salary? 63.

We're talking about not giving CEOs $400 million yearly salaries so we can raise the minimum wage by a couple of dollars. They (CEOs) have survived at less before. In fact, the CEO and founder of Whole Foods Markets has capped his own salary at $400K a year, even though he is worth a few million. He also pays his workers higher than the average grocery store workers, gives healthcare and lets them have a say in running the store. Not only has it NOT ruined his business, but it has increased is profits and had a very positive impact on the economy - as organic foods are in greater demand. And regular grocery chains are partly emulating Whole Foods as a result of their success.

  16. squegeeboo Says:

"Mininum wage should be set at a level that doesn’t put you in poverty. It is not there at the moment."

The only people I have ever met who are on minimum wage for more then 3 months when starting a new job are HS students or people so incompetant they should count themselves lucky that someone felt enough pity to hire them. Anyone who is stuck on minimum wage while trying to raise a family of 3 is where they are due to poor work ethic/decisions in life.

And yes, it was a bit of a strawman, thanks for noticing.

  17. squegeeboo Says:

"At $7.25 and hour do you know how many hours a day you’d have to work to make a $165,200 yearly salary? 63."

You show a willingness to work 63 hours a day, or even a realistic number like 10-12, and within a year or two your 7.25 becomes 10.00, keep your dedication, make the right career choices, and when you retire you might not be at 165k a year, but you'll be doing well enough to get buy and provide for your family wonderfully.

  18. marblex Says:

even if they do pass "minimum" wage hikes...they'll take it back with inflatio

Don't you know thgis country was built on the backs of the poor and continues to survive because it oppresses so many in poverty?

How could rich people possibly have five or six houses when 70 thousand people in L.A. are homeless?

How can they just flood poor people out of their homes to make way for a haven for rich white folk?

Simple. To have wealth you have to exchange your soul.

    Jesus was right.

You can't serve God and mammon.

  19. unbelievable Says:

One other thing... I worked for McDonald's when I was 16. It's not a stress-free job. For one, unlike your job, SpongeBob, there is not one free minute to surf the net while being paid... And you are worked like a horse. Even at 16 I used to leave that job exhausted and covered in grease. No wonder I'm now a health food nut...

  25. SteveW Says:

An increase from $5.15 to $7.25 is $2.10 per hour.

Multiply that by 40 hours per week and by 50 weeks per year and you get $4,200, which is exactly the salary increase received by the White House officials.

Somebody has to pay them for leaking stories to the newspapers

  27. Whynot Says:

re: the comment about knowing people on min. wage for only a short time. That may be the case, but it is a base salary from which salary increases are made. For example: if someone starts in a min. wage position & after six months are given a wage increase, that increase will be more if the starting point is higher. 3% of $7.25 is more than 3% or $5.15. Increasing the min. wage raises the base level salaries for a lot of people. I hope you get my point. I'm sure others can state it more clearly.

  28. Schwede Says:

Gee, and I thought the minimum wage was a baseline for all wages.

"Wow, son, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps." says the Troll.

It's so easy to minimize those who have to start (over) at minimum wage because they "(made) poor work ethic/decisions in life". Even if that were 100% true, the argument is STILL that they deserve to have a livable wage. Your utter lack of compassion has added nothing except disgust.

"Don’t you find it the least bit distastful that the same people who can write themselves a raise are denying others a much less of a raise?"

Explain how they're denying anyone a raise? It's a minimum not a maximum.

  32. Yikes Says:

"believing that a $2 hike in the minimum wage will be all roses and glory is not factually supported."

    Comment by Seixon

I think it depends on what your definition of "roses and glory" is. If you are getting minimum wage and your wage goes from $5.15 to $7.25, then I would think that you would then be able buy a rose or two more than before! $4,200 raise for White House staffers won't affect those staffers near as much as $2.15 would for minimum wagers.

  33. DieNowForPeace Says:

    #26 Wow,
That's sickening. What, incredible, callous schmucks.

  34. dlet Says:

Well then according to some intellectuals here the minimum wage would be too high if set at 7.25. So what do you think of 5.15? Should we get rid of the minimum wage all together? I mean if you can't work your way up from $1.00 an hour you are a pathetic, lazy bump on society's arse. The logic behind not keeping American citizens out of poverty and healthy escapes me but then again I didn't eat lead paint as a young child either.

    sure it can;
in such a case, a raise in the min wage may 'unstick' the market in such a way as to provide a net benefit to workers that is greater than the cost to employers.
There was that one study which compared fast food employment in NJ to PA (just over the border) when NJ raised its wage and found that employment actually increased... Something that "shouldn't" have happened.

Excuse me folks but when I was growing up people who had cars were rich and I still think of them that way. I walk to a bus stop every morning and take about an hour long ride to work each day. I do drive sometimes but it is more economical to use public transportation. Now if someone is having to make a choice between gas and food then maybe they need to change thier lifestyle because gas aint coming down in price real soon. Unless you live way out in the wilderness you have access to some sort of public transportation so if you can't afford gas it's time to start using it. Or we could invade a country, take their oil fileds, and sell it cheaply in the U.S. I vote for Venezuela, it's close and according to Hugo, Bush is already planning to invade it.

  74. ann coulter Says:

yes, i agree. the minimum wage is much too high! i am suggesting that the congress lowers it to $1.00. this way, the poor will not be able to buy food and will perish in the streets. unemployment will be lower, we will not need all those social programs, and people will still buy my books!!! YAY!!!

this will also solve the immigrant problem...if the wages here are lower than there, then why bother coming?

i want the poor in this country eliminated because i am compassionate. a 80 cent to one dollar minimum wage would be great!

i also want a maximum wage for all people of color of $1.70. that will solve lots of problems too...

    kisses,

The point, of course, was that the amount of this wage increase is the same as what minimum wage earners would get in a comparable year. And of course they can't afford to take any vacation, while those extra 80 hours at 5.15 don't make much difference.

Also, WH staffers can be sure to get COLA increases pretty much every year, whereas min-wagers get a partial one every ten years or so, if the GOP misers feel like it. Bah humbug!

  86. jpfrawg Says:

What job can you think of that is 5 times harder than another job? or even 4, maybe even three.
There is something to be said for supply and demand, but there has to be a reasonable relation. Correct me if you don't agree, but if a full time lawyer makes twice as much as a full time burger flipper and he gets to spend his days doing what he enjoys, don't you think thats good enough? But the fact is, in reality a top lawyer would probably make on the scale of 10x a burger flipper. Does a few years of law school/college make a person 10x as hardworking/valuable?

  88. Retired Republican Soldier Says:

Cool Breeze, I went to college and I had no money. There are hundreds of ways to finance college and the less you have the more help you will get. Nobody can say they didn't go to college becuase of money, becuase they can if they really have a mind to. Yes YOU may have to pay for some of it, YOU may have to take out loans, and maybe you won't finish in four years but you can go to and finish college. Also that last time I checked there were no signs saying blacks, browns, yellows, greens, or purples need not apply so it isn't a racial thing getting into college. Hell I have a daughter who is learning disabled who is taking regular college level course and passing them.

  89. unbelievable Says:

    RRS,

Don't forget. Times are different now. The Bush Regime has CUT funding for college, including student loans... You can't compare scenarios from the 1890s when you went to college with the present times. Would be like saying "A house cost $1400 in 1956, so anyone who says in 2006 that they can't afford one is just making up excuses and is lazy." Try hard to find a better argument.

    I have a career.

So you mean a government loan then?
So you have to get a loan to go to college?
    Then you had money.
But why should you have to get a loan in the first place?
Doesn't that just make people more dependent on the government loans?

I talk to alot of of folks every day who can't even afford their prescription drugs..some don't eat so they can get meds.

But these retired folks should get a min wage job?
    Get on welfare?

  91. Cool Breeze Says:

The Norwegian economy is a prosperous bastion of welfare capitalism

The government controls key areas such as the vital petroleum sector (through large-scale state enterprises). The country is highly dependent on its oil production and international oil prices, with oil and gas accounting for one-third of exports.

[[No wonder Seixon sees high gas prices as good, we support the welfare state of Norway]]

Norwegians worry about that time in the next two decades when the oil and gas will begin to run out; accordingly, Norway has been saving its oil-boosted budget surpluses in a Government Petroleum Fund, which is invested abroad and now is valued at more than $150 billion

I think it's time to boycott Royal Dutch Shell.
Let's see if seixon can eat crude oil.

  92. Cool Breeze Says:

Nobody can say they didn’t go to college becuase of money.

But many people went and joined the service so they could attend college tuition...when they could have just gotten a loan?

    why is that?

    Think about it.

  93. Krazny Says:

    Cool Breeze,

I would rather have my money going to a group of pacifist, athiest, socialist, then too a bunch of religious fanatics bent on destroying anyone who disagrees.

  94. edgery Says:

No pay raise for members of Congress until the incomes of average Americans start to rise again.

The public can't affect who gets paid what at the White House, but we can make it very unhealthy for any Dem who accepts the automatic pay hike scheduled for next January. Demand that all Dems, House and Senate, incumbents and challengers, refuse any raise until, at the very least, the minimum wage is raised and in effect.

  95. Ken Says:

Did the trolls for pay, like Seixon, get a raise? Only paid trolls would spend so much time on a Progressive board beating a dead horse.

  96. Ho Chi Minh Says:

Ann Coulter; Your minimum wage should be 0.10/day! Go hang yourself with your jockstrap.

  97. kdaves Says:

Our public servants should be paid minimum wage. Period.

We did not elect them to enrich them financially. They are supposed to work for us, but knowing this doesn't change history, I guess.

Sleezebags all, and all need to be replaced unless they are for getting out of the entire middle east, unless they are for impeachment of bush and investigating his administration for war crimes charges and convictions (no pardons) and unless they are forcing a re-opening of 9/11 investigations so they are public and complete.

Also, no outside funding for elections. Everyone should be on a level playing field for that.

    No more bushes or clintons.

  98. kdaves Says:

    ...and no money for morons.

  99. bemused Says:

Has anyone realised that since the last minimum wage increase people on the minimum wage have effectively been having their pay CUT every time inflation increases. It is seriously about time they got a pay rise - the companies paying most of these people can certainly afford it.
3 kids or no, $5 for an hour's work is simply pathetic.

  100. bemused Says:

and squeegeeboo, you need a kick in the head, we weren't all born with silver spoon firmly wedged up our asses

  101. K. Bryant Anderson Says:

Do any of you realize that the 50% price hike in labor would be immediately accompanied by a 50% hike in the cost of the food? Raising the minimum wage would hurt everyone NOT on minimum wage, which is most of you I would assume.

  102. Jay Randal Says:

If the minimum wage had been raised 25 cents a year, for the past 8 years, it would be at $7.15 now, so the Congress has caused this problem! Jumping it 2 bucks an hour now could harm small business owners, but nonetheless it has to be raised to keep up with inflation!

  103. J. Millard Cashman Says:

Where is the same argument for $4.oo /gallon fuel rightards?#104?

Why is a hike in the minimum wage like flushing money down the toilet to rightards instead of putting more money in peoples hands to stimulate the ecomomy?

Was most of the right hatched?( the only explanation for a reptile pea brain)

  104. Emeraldjim Says:

Isn't it interesting how this raise for the White House staff (on a per hour basis) is almost equal to the proposed raise for our nations least paid and the White House staff gets it immediately but those currently making minimum wage would have to wait for two years if the increase in minimum wage were to pass to enjoy it's full effect?

  105. Lynn Redding Says:

The saddest thing about this is that the $2 increase to the minimum wage in no way affects the members of Congress or their paycheck or their raise and would go a long way to appease their constituents, who would be grateful to them. They are hate-filled, mean-spirited people.
