The number of earmarks, “totaling about half a billion dollars,” in a domestic spending bill that House conservatives are now “struggling” to push through. The problem? The earmarks “are tied to a Democratic minimum-wage increase that is anathema to the GOP, and no proposed solution has taken root.”
Oh boy, now the GOP wants to attach pork crap to the minimum wage bill to kill it? My head hurts from the vile things the Repubs do!
July 13th, 2006 at 3:11 pm#1 Your wrong. It is much worse.
The Repugs actually WANT the pork. They just dont want the min. wage increase. While I am a conservative, it is sad that these losers don’t raise the minimum wage. It is even more sad that they cannot stop blowing cash on pork.
July 13th, 2006 at 3:25 pmWell post 2 to get the pork, then they have to pass the minimum wage increase bill, but if the Democrats in DC agree to the pork, then they look like hogs too!
July 13th, 2006 at 3:33 pm#3,
Your saying that the Dems don’t want to spend money and that none of the “pork”
is Democrat earmarks? I think your wrong on that account. The Dems have always been the party of bigger government. The Repug are just a little late to the party. They (repugs) now also seem to want to have endless spending on “pork”.
This statement holds true for 96%+ of all congressmen Repug or Dem:
“I have never seen a spending bill I didn’t like”
July 13th, 2006 at 3:45 pmPost 4 > I think a bill to increase the minimum wage should have zero pork attached to it by anybody! The bill’s passage with a half billion or more for pork projects makes me sick!
July 13th, 2006 at 3:52 pmfrom the first link:
“Democrats and Republicans are going to want to pass this bill,†said Flake, who has threatened to offer amendments to strike each of the 1,700 earmarks for which a sponsor is not identified.
that’s a good idea…
“We’re in an election season, and members have come to believe that the path to reelection is paved with pork,†Flake said. “This bill is full of it.â€
as per usual…
Few, if any, lawmakers expect the largest domestic spending bill to become law before the election, but many would like the House to pass it by then.
imagine that…
Under one plan described by Republican lawmakers and aides who favor the spending bill, the minimum-wage increase, to $7.25 per hour, would be detached from the measure and coupled with tax cuts for small businesses and both bills would get a vote.
i’m sure it will get “detached”… doubtful on the “coupling”…
Minimum-wage critics say the Appropriations Committee…should try to mark it up again without the increase. Democratic efforts to add the minimum-wage language elsewhere have failed.
nooooo…
…
Some are likely to argue that the House should pass a minimum-wage increase
but, but, that would be doing something for the “mythical little guy”…
to take an election-year issue away from Democrats and free up the labor-HHS measure.
oh… i see…
July 13th, 2006 at 3:55 pmKaty,
I agree with what you said.
July 13th, 2006 at 4:10 pmconservatives talk about smaller government is just talk. we have the biggest, most bankrupt bureaucracy in history — all thanks to Bush/Cheney and the Republican party.
“small government” is nothing more than a conservative talking point. They’ve had total dominance for the last 5 years and look what they have to show for it.
the closest thing you’ll ever get to small government is SMART government — something only people who BELIEVE in our form of government can accomplish.
July 13th, 2006 at 4:29 pmAccording to the GAO, Bush has wasted 311 billion dollars in Iraq so far. The Repugs are wringing their hands over a minimum wage increase? That is hilarious.
July 13th, 2006 at 5:23 pmIf, by some miracle, this pork laden bill would be defeated, then the sorry assed pukes can crow that the dems defeated the minimum wage bill.
This is exactly their plan. Hope it works. The pork laden bill needs to be defeated, for all of our sakes.
July 13th, 2006 at 5:28 pmSo most of you hear are pointing out that the Repugs have spent alot of money even though they always say they won’t. You also seem to be against this huge amount of spending as am I.
I can only assume that this fall you guys/gals will only be supporting canidates that are for reducing the Federal budget or at least freezing it in size and removing all pork from bills.
I guess you can’t vote Democrat either as I haven’t seem one come out yet and claim they want to actually spend less on the Federal Budget. The Dems love to point out how much the Repugs spend, yet they like to spend just as much.
Seems odd to scream. HEY YOU GUYS ARE SPENDING SO MUCH MONEY, BUT IF YOU ELECT ME, I WILL SPEND JUST AS MUCH OR MORE ON THE FEDERAL BUDGET!!!”
I, for one, will vote for whoever wants to reduce the Federal Budget. I don’t care what party they are from.
July 13th, 2006 at 5:59 pmYes, God forbid the working poor should get an increase in pay for their labors.
July 13th, 2006 at 6:50 pmNot when there are profits to be made; or pork to be granted; or campaign donors rewarded.
Gary, the fact is Dems are far more fiscally responsible. The majoriy of Dems are for Pay-Go. I have yet to see any Republican support the idea.
July 13th, 2006 at 7:29 pmWhat I see wrong with the issue here is being able to attatch riders to bills at all. ALL bills should be single issue.
July 13th, 2006 at 7:54 pmExcept for the budget, piltdown, I’m with you. In that case, local levees should be barred (or bared).
