Deputy Attorney General: Saying ‘The President Is Always Right’ Is ‘Humorous’

On Tuesday, acting Deputy Attorney General Steven Bradbury told Congress, “The president is always right.” After the remark was widely criticized in the national media, Bradbury was asked about it yesterday by Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN). Bradbury said he was trying “to be humorous.” Watch it:

You can watch Bradbury’s initial remarks here.

Full transcript below:

COOPER: Mr. Bradbury, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee released a letter last week saying that he had not been properly informed as the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. You’re quoted in the newspaper yesterday as saying that, “The President is always right.” And I hope that’s a misquote, ’cause I’ve never met an infallible human being yet –

BRADBURY: Neither have I, congressman –

COOPER: — with the possible exception of the Pope.

BRADBURY: Neither have I, congressman. I’m glad you brought that up. I guess that just shows I shouldn’t try to be humorous when I’m testifying. That was a tongue-in-cheek comment. Nobody is always right and I certainly didn’t mean to say that other than in humor.

I felt he was trying to put a little humor into it when he said it, but, unfortunately, it is true to any thinking person that Dubya is surrounded by a bubble of enablers who will do anything to avoid disagreeing with him. It is a common alcholic tendency to find those who will not cause any waves for them. Sorry, it is obvious to me.

Yeah….mabye a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing isn’t the best place for you to bust out your Vegas act, you dolt. This guy is the acting Deputy Attorney General???

I really hope that the next words out of Cooper’s mouth were, “So, if you were ‘joking’ before, perhaps you’d like to give a straight answer to Leahy’s question now?”

After all is said and done, the little weasel still evaded the question.

  6. Bruce Gorton says:

Was he joking? Well, it was pretty obvious.
    Was he humorous? Nope.

  7. TripMaster Monkey says:

By the way, couldn’t the act of ‘making a joke’ be construed as some sort of contempt?

  8. matthew says:

Kinda reminds me of Rummy’s response to the soldier that (almost tearfuly) was asking him why he couldn’t get a new vehicle to search for IEDs with, to which Rummy gave him a non-answer and literally laughed.

Speaking of… hey THINK PROGRESS, why haven’t you guys reported on that yet? It was on Olberman last night and was friggin UNBELIEVABLE.

  9. Dtree says:

People who have no respect for our form of government will never do a good job running it.

These snot-nosed apologists think being hauled before a Congressional committee is funny. I have a mind to smack some sense into them… what makes them think that any of this is a laughing matter??

It really makes you question the committment of this administration when it comes to stopping terrorism. If they really wanted to end the terrorist threat you’d think they would approach the problem more seriously.

  10. GSD says:

Republicans have spent the last thirty years telling all Americans that government doesn’t work. Now that they control the entire government, they have spent the last 6 years proving it.

  12. Curlew says:

He wasn’t trying to be humorous. All of the Field Marshall’s in Bush’s Reichstag believe they are above the truth. Why should we believe this guy is any different?

  13. Simon Bolivar says:

    Annual Military Spending:

    Israel: $!0,000,000,000

    Lebanon: $540,000,000

Leabanon does not even have fixed wing aircraft! They have a few helicopters.

However, the mainstream media portrays this as a war i.e. a battle among equals.

The only rockets fired at Israel are home-made and, while potentially deadly, if you look at the ratio of success when these are fired, it is almost miniscule. However, in terms of Israeli i.e. U.S. fighter jets dropping bombs onto international airport runways, civilian power plants, and bridges rarely miss and are almost always deadly.

The ground is being laid by Israel for a conflict that drags Iran and Syria into a regional conflict. Can’t ThinkProgress recognize the bias of the media in this situation?

  14. Deputy Dawg says:

These assholes make you want to vomit. Funny? Right!

  15. Jackie says:

Joke I think not Bradbury is looking to replace Gonzales and the new Attorney General. By sucking up to the President is a sure way to get that job. Gonzales has to take the fall for the Gitmo failures. Money and promotions lead so to follow Satan. I wonder how the honest DOJ attorneys feel about blindly following an evil leader. Gonzales had a good run and was used for the Spanish vote so he’s not needed anymore. As Karl Rove is the new immigrant in the GOP having a picture of his Grand father to show off. Now does the GOP think Spanish people are that stupid, as millions marched for rights and Karl said send them home now for their vote he says I’m one of you.

This is a big dog and pony show ,don’t wait til november to save our country ,its doesn’t have that long it dying on the operation table.Make big waves now !!!!!!!!

  21. Chase says:

#13 – Considering the military mismatch, the governments of Lebanon and Palestine should try a little harder to rein in the terrorist groups who provoke Israeli strikes.

I wouldn’t expect that any time soon considering how these terrorist groups are essentially the power centers of these failed states (or quasi-state in the case of Palestine).

It’s simple. Stop blowing yourself up in Israeli restaurants and markets, stop crossing the border to kidnap IDF soldiers and stop firing off glorified bottle rockets into Israeli territory and all the tanks and airship strikes will cease.

  22. mike arauz says:

that response from bradbury is totally fair. i heard it live, and at the time i thought it was a poor choice of words, but he clearly intended to ‘humorously’ make the point that as far as his opinion when in front the comittee goes, ‘the president is always right.’

though we’d all like to think that individuals like bradbury at the Justice department would be more independently minded than that, it’s rediculous to actually expect anything else in a hearing setting.

  23. unbelievable says:

Yeah that was as humorous as leeches, boils, plagues and incontenence…

  24. Snappy says:

    Simon Bolivar

Home made or not, they are still getting fired. If somebody tries to stab me with a pencil and I have a sub-automatic machine gun, somebody is going to get riddled with lead and it ain’t gonna be me.

That said, what we need is for the guys who started this mess to be treat like the criminals they are, and for the various peoples in the Middle East to grow up. Sure, you don’t like Israel, well nobody likes the French either and you don’t see anybody out to eliminate them as a nation, well, not lately at any rate. The mess is there to stay, and the best bet is if everyone stops supporting groups like Hizbollah and starts working towards actually living with each other.

  26. QUALAR says:

Look at all the neo-nazis behind this idiot. Where are they getting these followers? The only thing missing are the brown shirts. These are the people who are covering-up GOP crimes. Bush and Gonzales have stacked the deck. Even Fitzgerald’s been turned.

  27. green917 says:

#23 – The problem is that there is a time and a place for levity. I, for one, don’t think that one (particularly a deputy Attorney General of the United States) should be making jokes while being questioned by a United States Senator. As someone mentioned above, he still hasn’t answered Senator Leahy’s very valid question and that is why this is bullshit (regardless of whether or not he was being humorous).

  28. Simon Bolivar says:

    22:

What I’m talking about is the use of proportional force. No nation with respect and regard for internationa l law and basic human rights can respond to a 10-pound suicide belt with an invasion of a city/country including the droppiing of thousands of pounds of bombs on civilian infrastructure.

Remember, the groups that have kidnapped a total of 3 Israeli soldiers are simply asking for the release of WOMEN AND CHILDREN (minors) from Israeli prisons!!! These people are being held without trial…a la Guantanamo.

  29. freeman says:

#22 sure kidnap a jew and the moral response is certainly to kill dozens of other peoples (non jews)Such racsism is morally reprehensible but what can be expected from a state based on race but hatred and contempt for the very people whose homes your occupying and all of whom have no right what so ever for any form of compensation. The god of the old testament advises ethnic genocide and slavery is fine too ,as long as it isn’t another jew .An eye for an eye to make the whole world blind .Gandi

  31. jpandre says:

Even if Bradbury was trying to make a joke or be sarcrastic, what’s the underlying message in his comment?
    A. The President thinks he’s always right?
    B. The President is an idiot who’s never right?
    C. I have to pretend the President is always right?
    D. There are people in the administration who think the President is always right?
    E. I’m going to do some major brown nosing, because I know Bush will eat it up?

No matter how you look at it–on or below the surface–the comment is disturbing.

  32. Chase says:

    #29 –

respond to a 10-pound suicide belt with an invasion of a city/country including the droppiing of thousands of pounds of bombs on civilian infrastructure.

Let’s not act as though there was but one suicide bombing. This has been building for quite some time.

Remember, the groups that have kidnapped a total of 3 Israeli soldiers are simply asking for the release of WOMEN AND CHILDREN (minors) from Israeli prisons!!! These people are being held without trial…a la Guantanamo.

When you negotiate with terrorists, you embolden them and virtually assure they will continue with the same behavior, making ever more lengthy demands. As for women and children, I don’t know why they are imprisoned and neither do you. I do know for a fact that Hamas suicide bombers have a stated policy of targeting Israeli women and children.

This response, while not equal, is certainly legitimate and justified.

#31 – It actually is simple.

Step 1: Return the kidnapped soldiers.
Step 2: Denounce the use of terrorism in Israel.
Step 3: Recognize the Israeli state.
Step 4: Join hands and sing.

Unfortunately, the zealots and radicals on the Palestinian side find the above entirely unacceptable. They are causing the Palestinian people much unnecessary anguish. If the Arabs sought a real solution, accepting the conditions above, do you really think the Israelis wouldn’t accept it? They don’t want war; the Arabs want war.

  37. freeman says:

ethnocentricity has always been the major stumbling block to peace .That goes for all this partiotic blather here in the US .You must de-humanize an enemy to make it possible to abandon all principles and do the dirty deed, just read the old testament ,look at the US treatment of the indian (last years terrorist ) or pick up a news paper .Same old same old .Teach the savage to read or liberate his country by killing his wife and children ,It really for their own good .HATE LIVES .Just find a photo on the internet and show it to a fundamentalist .Ask them if it looks like the work of Jesus.Oh and big suprise the liberal media hasnt even shown photo’s of our best and brightest’s flag draped coffins ,hell the average citizen hasen’t even seen any real war photo’s after years of war in Iraq and afghanistan.Try showing them some you’ll be amazed at the reactions you get .Its so much easier to support a war when you haven’t seen any of the effects of it on other human beings.ONE WORLD ONE PEOPLE ONE DESTINY When jesus rreturns he’ll look like one of us ,PEACE MAKERS !!!!

  40. Jim says:

“it’s rediculous to actually expect anything else in a hearing setting

I couldn’t disagree with you more. I think it’s appropriate to expect public officials, whose salaries we all pay with our tax dollars, to tell the whole truth during a Senate hearing, and to do it without smirking sarcasm.

  41. Bruce Gorton says:

Now back to the topic at hand:

The statement being “humorous” is even worse. It is contempt of the Senate, and should be treat as such. The fact is that you cannot treat a legal proceding like a press meeting, you answer your questions honestly, and without humour because it is not a situation for stand up comedy. As the Deputy Attorney General does not understand that much, you need a new Deputy Attorney General.

  42. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Step 2: Denounce the use of terrorism in Israel.
Step 3: Recognize the Israeli state.
Step 4: Join hands and sing.”

this leaves out the question of the Palestinian state, its exact contours, the Israeli settlements.

These issues are kind off the table at the moment as we’re on the brink of regional war (and I’m in no way condoning the recent prisoner-takings). Just wanted to point out these points.

  46. Chase says:

    #46 – This is true.

I think Israel would pull out of all Palestinian territories immediately if the above conditions were met with sincerity. Acceptance of the above are a necessary pre-condition, however, considering what happened after the pull-out from Gaza – continued bombings and Qassam missile volleys.

I may be wrong, but I don’t see the Israeli leadership wanting to continue to battle with either of these two organizations. It is the responsibility of their host countries to rein them in and bring them to justice. Because Lebanon is unwilling and/or unable, Israel is left nary an option.

  49. Bruce Gorton says:

    For crying out loud:

Look people, while America has it on its books that it can bomb the heck out of other countries that contain suspected terrorists, guess what? America doesn’t have room to judge Israel. America, invaded Iraq with one heck of a lot less provacation then Israel has with Lebanon, and fact is, that right now what is happening in Lebanon and Israel is not a reflection on America, its leadership or even its president (who has basically said “Fight Hizbollah, but don’t topple the Lebanese government.”)

The war that is about to explode between the two nations is one in which neither side is the baddie. The baddies in that case are Hizbollah, which is trying to brew a war between the two nations and succeeding. What is needed is Lebanon and Israel to sort their own conflict out in this, not further interference from America. The worst thing America could do in that conflict is take sides. In that conflict, remain neutral, it isn’t your affair and you don’t have enough moral high ground to make it your affair. That is a consequence of having a government that goes for pre-emptive wars.

My guess is that TP is not exploring the issue because America is not in a moral position to do anything about the issue, and won’t be until this current administration gets replaced with one that redeems America’s reputation.

  50. freeman says:

sorry but the US has vetoed every resolution against isreal for 50 years even when the entire world condemned Isreals behavior and I condemn its present behavior as a “free man “.Our takiing sides in this conflict is so obvious as not to be seriously discussed at this point and the bush administrations policies are to blame The preemptive war ananlogy is true enough but I believe the preent situation looks alot more like our response to the unseen enemy Shread the constitution bail out of all international treaties ect.If a mouse enters the house you don’t break out a shot gun !

  52. Chase says:

    #48-

the cowardly IDF have a propensity for killing Arab families…a perverse form of bullying….you can just see the endless queues of volunteer suicide bombers lining up right now targeting Tel Aviv et al.

Every time a civilian has been killed, I have heard Israeli leadership come out to say “we regret the death of civilians”. I honestly believe they do all they can to minimize such killings. It’s difficult, though, when the enemy uses civilians as human shields.

What’s more, while the IDF has a policy of keeping civilian casualties to a minimum, that can hardly be said about Hamas or Hezbollah. They make it a point to kill civilians.

#50 – I think the US will stay on the sidelines until Israel requests our assistance. Until then, we will consider them capable of defending themselves.

My guess is that TP is not exploring the issue because America is not in a moral position to do anything about the issue, and won’t be until this current administration gets replaced with one that redeems America’s reputation.

I would like to be as optimistic about the motives of the TP editors, but I’m not. I think the reason no mention has been made is because, as much as they dislike Israel and support Palestine and Hezbollah, they know Israel is justified here. You won’t hear things that shine your ideological opponent in a favorable light from strongly partisan sites, on either side.

  53. freeman says:

Chase, I watched the whole hearing on C-Span. The guy was NOT joking. His response was to Sen. Leahy asking why Bush said that the SCOTUS decision meant that he didn’t have to close Gitmo and was Bush told that was what the case was ultimately about? If so, who gave him that “cockamanie” idea? Bradbury said he didn’t try to give anyone any “cockamanie” ideas, and then started bullshiting. Leahy then asked, “Well, is the President right then or is he wrong?” He asked him several times. Then Bradbury said, “The President is always right.”

I personally was struck by that answer, but hardly surprised as we’ve seen the Justice Department turned into a whore for this President. You know, the Justice Dept. is supposed to support and protect the U.S. Constitution and the American people…NOT whoever happens to be President at the moment?

  70. Seixon says:

Look at the guy’s face for crying out loud. I saw the video, the dude was making an obvious crack. Seemed like a parody of Nixon or whoever that said, “When the president does it, that means it’s legal.”

It’s just like when Bush jokes around, you anti-Bush freaks who usually accuse conservatives of not having a sense of humor suddenly forget your own and can’t even understand the concept of Bush making a joke.

Like the joke about him fishing a perch. You guys took that as a serious statement! Daayyyymn you guys need to lighten up.

and he’s damn right! if i had a lawyer defending me, the last thing i would want him or her doing is cracking jokes as answers to serious questions at a hearing. joking to the press is one thing, but at a congressional hearing — that’s just stupid and unprofessional. it also suggests either arrogance or that the individual lacks the seriousness to work on behalf of the citizens of america, which is what he’s supposed to be doing.

this full court press the justice department is doing on the president’s behalf is simply not in the best interests of the american people. answering a serious question with a joke at a congressional hearing is mocking the process and the people it’s meant to represent.

Paul Marcinkus, head of the Vatican Bank from 1971 to 1989, was indicted in Italy in 1982 as an accessory in the $3.5 billion collapse of Banco Ambrosiano, one of the major post-war financial scandals. Banco Ambrosiano was accused of money laundering activities for the mafia and Propaganda Due (aka “P2″), an outlawed masonic lodge, led by neofascist Licio Gelli. P2 and its headmaster Licio Gelli worked with Gladio, the secret NATO anticommunist paramilitary organizations. Marcinkus never came to trial in Italy, where courts ruled that as a Vatican employee he was immune from prosecution. He lived in retirement in Sun City, Arizona (US) until his death on February 21, 2006.

The Vatican Bank refused to admit legal responsibility for the Ambrosiano’s downfall but did acknowledge “moral involvement”, and paid $241m (£169m) to creditors. As of 2006, investigations are continuing concerning the murder of Ambrosiano’s chairman, Roberto Calvi, which, according to Ernest Backes, former #3 of Clearstream, may have been linked to the death of Gérard Soisson, who used to work for Clearstream, a “bank of banks” which practices financial clearing.

I personally dont give a damn about the Pope or other religious leaders. Infallible, come on!

hey I talk to GOD all the time and he tells me the pope is fallible

  75. Progressaurus Rex says:

i give a great big DAMN about the pope, personally…
as in, i would like to see him, and the office, get a great big DAMNING.

  76. Cyra Brown says:

This guy is a Bush appointee, alright. When a Deputy AG decides that testifying before Congress (under oath?) is THE place to work on his ’stand-up routine. He couldn’t even be bothered to ‘fake it’ for the cameras.

  77. Juan C says:

The mess is there to stay, and the best bet is if everyone stops supporting groups like Hizbollah and starts working towards actually living with each other.

    Comment by Bruce Gorton — July 13, 2006 @ 2:39 pm

So, If I go to your place and take the living room for myself, I would encourage you to work towards actually living with each other.
