The United States has rejected a United Nations resolution demanding Israel end its military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The US was the only country to vote against the draft resolution put forward by Qatar on behalf of Arab nations. Ten of the 15 Security Council nations voted in favour and four, Britain, Denmark, Slovakia and Peru, abstained

—-dennis hastert is in the hospital

—-israel is killing people with george bush’s bombs

—-think progress is silent on the above three, but, expect a red button story shortly.

Iraqis Call for Timetable, America Cracks Down

\”We asked them to put a timetable on their withdrawal, and they think that they should stay. This is the main reason of the conflict,\” explained Sadr movement spokesman Fadil el-Sharra, adding it was Sadr\’s representatives in Parliament who had put forward the resolution demanding a timeline on a U.S. troop withdrawal.

  5. Chase says:

#1 – China would block a resolution condemning DRNK for thier provocative missile launches. So what’s the difference?

  6. james risser says:

hmmm, let me see….what is the difference between korea farting for 42 seconds in the general direction of japan, and, israel invading, murdering, bombing, another country???

gee, chasse, that is a great question! i am stumped. i guess you are right; the two situations are identical.

thanks for pointing that out; for a moment there i thought israel was doing something WRONG.

  7. Chase says:

    #6 – Good, I’m glad you’ve been corrected.

There is nothing wrong with defending your troops or your sovereign territory.

  8. David Lavine says:

“israel is killing people with george bush’s bombs”

I would never vote Republican, but comments like these remind me why so many Jews do. Israel defending itself is not a partisan debate, so please don’t make it one. This country has always had a policy of standing by Israel as its ally, regardless of which party held the executive office.

And trust me, if Canada and Mexico backed terrorist groups that routinely launched missiles into US territory, you wouldn’t expect your government to react any differently.

  9. Doodle Bug says:

This is the start of a major war
Isreal is trying to destabalise the middle east there next pland is to attack syria
which of course has a pact with Iran

Hey Bingo Bush got what he wanted another bloody war – Bush should not veto a resolution for peacefull purposes .

  10. Chase says:

#9 – Israel is attempting to destabilize the Middle East? You are kidding right?

What about the terrorist organizations who are kidnapping IDF soldiers and attempting to transfer them to Iran?

  11. Doodle Bug says:

10# you read that story on that isreali news paper site heretz.com or something i just read that too …CRAP

BUT – The House votes to NOT return to the 50’s!!!
    GOOD JOB!!!

  13. Chase says:

#11 – If it’s not true, it’s not true. We’ll find out soon enough.

I think Iran will stay out of this situation. After all, it’s not their battle, much like it’s not the US’s battle.

  14. Chase says:

Wait a minute Doodle Bug… you diminish the source of the story I post right before you post stuff from the Tehran Times?

Ha ha ha. Get outta town! That’s rich.

well, then, i will change it to

“israel is killing people with usa-supplied bombs, whose sale was approved by democrats and republicans in the house and senate”

that doesn’t have quite the ‘ring’ of the first, but, if it will cut the legs out of your silly ‘partisan’ comment, voila!

  16. TheToonGuy says:

I think there’s something wrong with my browser. I came here looking for commentary on the House vote on the Voting Rights Act…

  17. Chase says:

How about we keep going with this:

israel is killing people with usa-supplied bombs, whose sale was approved by democrats and republicans in the house and senate..

to combat Iranian supplied and funded terrorists who kidnap their soliders, violate their borders and target their civilians!

  18. james risser says:

    or,

on the pretext of defending themselves even though no one attacked them and their soldiers were armed and in lebanon when they went missing.

  20. NewNameAcquired says:

#2… james risser … hey, look over at what TP is fighting for. Nowhere does it say it’s concerned with the death of comedians. As sad as that is, magazines like People, Entertainment Weekly, CNN, FOX, and every other news/media outlet will cover that kinda of thing just fine. We don’t need it taking up space here.

However, yes. I am against what Israel is doing. Because 2 people were kidnapped they decide to set off missiles to kill thousands? Those crazy bastards.

  21. Chase says:

    #19 –

in lebanon when they went missing.

    Wrong. They were in Israel.

From the Bonton Globe, summarizing the kidnapping –

A deadly cross-border attack by Hezbollah gunmen into northern Israel yesterday opened a second front in Israel’s battle with Islamic extremists, just two weeks after Hamas fighters crossed into southern Israel and kidnapped a soldier.

The gunmen attacked an army patrol, killing three Israeli soldiers and abducting two more. In response, Israeli troops stormed into southern Lebanon and bombed bridges in operations that left five more Israeli soldiers dead.

  22. Lush Limppud says:

#1 – China would block a resolution condemning DRNK for thier provocative missile launches. So what’s the difference?

The reason china is blocking the DRNK is because Israel, 40 years now, has been in violation.

China is, from what I can tell, trying to get the US to bring Israel to the table, if they birng Israel to the table then China will drag Koreas ass to the table.

    thank you, jeb!

    AWOL-*Think Progress

  24. james risser says:

    chase,

with all due respect to the boston globe, i believe that the two abductions happened on lebanese soil. i base this on the fact that israel has been on foot patrol in southern lebanon for some time, violating their soveriegnty; and, these two fools stumbled into lebanese hands, rather than being taken.

  25. Chase says:

The reason china is blocking the DRNK is because Israel, 40 years now, has been in violation.

China is, from what I can tell, trying to get the US to bring Israel to the table, if they birng Israel to the table then China will drag Koreas ass to the table.

    That makes no sense.

China is blocking DRNK resolutions because they are their defenders on the Security Council. That has nothing to do with China. China couldn’t care less about Israel.

That was one of the more non-sequitur arguments I’ve seen. Congratulations.

  26. Chase says:

#25 – The BG is but one source to report that.

If you can find a non-Iranian source that says they were in Lebanese territory, I will consider it. Until then, I will seriously discount your above post.

  27. james risser says:

and, of course, their location is somewhat of a red-herring. i don’t care if these two young gentlemen were olmert’s lovers and never left his home; it is not a proper response to a kidnapping to bomb and kill civilians! that is what everyone in the world thinks, but for chase, john bolton, and think progress.

  28. james risser says:

the where and how and the when of the alleged kidnapping may never be known with certainty. but, as i say above, even if you assume the two were dragged out from under olmert’s bedsheets, the response by israel was WRONG. the american support of it is WRONG. the silence of think progress is WRONG.

  29. katy says:

james – thought you were banned…

please get off that subject already… there are plenty of other places willing to discuss it…
this thread is about THE HOUSE VOTE… get on topic, please…

  30. Humanist says:

This thread has been hijacked, but because of the importance of the subject matter I can not protest.

The abominable action of the nation of Israel in this situation should be front and center – right next to the abominable actions of the nation of the United States of America in regard to its illegal invasion/occupation/murderous campaign in Iraq – on all of your news stations, reports, and papers.

I am glad to see that many here have already correctly identified the heinous nature of Israel’s attacks. And the same has been observed by the members of the UN Security Council with the lone atrocious exception of the USA.

Speak up Americans and speak loudly! Lest the warmongers and malcontents lead you down the path to WWIII, and certain annihilation.

    Peace.

This thread has been hijacked, but because of the importance of the subject matter I can not protest.

    i thank you for understanding.

think progress should be ashamed of themselves for their material omission of this story, and, i am outraged that they are essentially doing the work of bush administration and the pnac with their silience.

  32. Humanist says:

    #31-james,

I agree with the disturbing silence, but I think that it would be irresponsible to suggest a collusion between TP/bush/pnac. There has to be a better explanation and I truly hope that it is not racial/nationalistic in nature.

  33. Sharon Cox says:

Is my memory failing, didn’t Israel arrest 10 Palastenian and syria people a few weeks ago and also turn out all the power to thousands of Palestenians..Didn’t Israel also fence off farms of plestenians several months ago, forbidding people to work their land..Clearly there is a lot of discrempecies all of which are leaning to Israel supporters not truly facing who did what to whom and when..I heard from several sources the 2 Israeles stumbled into Lebanon and were taken…O.K. Let’s say for a minute all the above is true, bull shit bush and the Israel sympithyzers must be chomping at the bit to take all the land away from Palestine, something they have been trying to do for years. To bad the Palestenians let them into the country to begin with…..Sorry, I’m for the under dog on this one. Israel is wrong and they should be held accountable. But given the fact bull shit bushis backing Israel yet again we are likely to see this is all a back door aproach to move on the Syria and Iran….Blessings

  34. james risser says:

well, i don’t know if it is necessarily collusion, but, the effect is the same, and that is my point.

think progress today has carried the water for the bush administration, the pnac, and the radical neoconservative agenda of occupation and control.

whether it is actual collusion, special-interest money, or anything else, the effect is the same and that matters…to me, anyway.

  35. Lush Limppud says:

    ————————–
    Only to you apparently.

China is blocking DRNK resolutions because they are their defenders on the Security Council. That has nothing to do with China. China couldn’t care less about Israel.

I didn’t say that China cared about Israel, as the article about the UN went, which you either didn’t read decided to ignore, was that KOREA was to CHINA what ISRAEL is to the USA.

    And the USA defends Israel…

  36. Humanist says:

    #35-Lush,
It feels as though you are offering up a red herring. I’m not implying that NK is not an issue, but they are not at this moment engaging in large scale murder of their neighbor.

    What’s with the silence?

  37. SKdeA says:

Well, at leat the House renewed the Voting Riights Act…

  38. Jay Randal says:

Yes the voting rights act got renewed, but Israel may have ignited WWIII, so we might all be dead before November, if this Middle East thing goes nuclear?!

  39. DrSinker says:

Any of you catch the UN resolution we vetoed:

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/07/13/mideast.response/index.html

John Bolton, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said that “in light of the fluid events on the ground,” the United States believed the Qatar-sponsored resolution was untimely and out of date, and would have helped inflame passions in the Middle East.

According to CNN, the resolution was to 1: demand Israel halt its attacks on Gaza 2) Palestinian militants release the Israeli soldier abducted June 25 in a raid in Israel and stop launching rockets at Israel from Gaza and) have Israel release Palestinian government officials and lawmakers it took into custody after the soldier’s abduction.

And Bolton thought this resolution would help inflame passions? John Bolton: putting the ASS in ambassador.

  40. Cyra Brown says:

Ok, so the House votes for renewal, amazing. But without the Senate approving it too, it doesn’t matter. The Republican Senators who are holding it up have no doubt crowed about those democratic elections in Iraq, aren’t they great? But they disagree with democratic elections, here in America? That makes NO sense, whatsoever. What do they have against ‘transparency’ in elections? Come on Republicans! If it’s good enough for Iraq, it’s good enough for us!

  41. Jay Randal says:

How come we Americans never dip a finger in ink after we vote? Must be so the GOP members can vote dozens of times each > lol.

  42. Theresa says:

Well, so much for us leaving when “they” (the Iraqis) ask us to. How many times have we heard Dumbya say we’ll leave when they ask us.

  43. bs says:

    #34

thank you, but nothing ever gets said to that because israel owns us and whatever israel does is ok. isn’t israel still occupying syria land? the israeli gov is a bunch of criminals. and bush has his head so far up israels ass when he pulls out he has a f. beenie on his head.

  44. Coffins draped with flags says:

There must be an election soon… need to score some brownie points with the voters.

  45. Coffins draped with flags says:

Just a comment about the middle east messy war…
This is exactly what the American Taliban Fundementalist wanted… they have their anit-Christ in the White House, the middle east is exploding in violence, and then the ‘RAPTURE can happen.

  46. Coffins draped with flags says:

Isreal exists to protect OUR OIL. That’s the only reason will provide them with arms and money. There is nothing nobel about our support for Isreal. Once again… it’s about the OIL. I hope the Iraqis keep blowing up the oil fields. Cheney must choke everytime there’s a fire in an oil field. But then again, since we are occupying Iraq, our tax dollars are paying to put out the oil fires and restore the oil lines. If we weren’t the occupying nation, then Cheney and his oil friends would have to foot the bill.
