Christian Science Monitor Prints Attack On Global Warming Science Written by Stand-Up Comic

The Christian Science Monitor has printed an attack on Al Gore and others who take the threat of global warming seriously. The article is penned by stand-up comic Julia Gorin. An excerpt:

Scared and unsure how to fight terrorists, they confront “climate change,” which only requires spending trillions of other people’s dollars on something that may not need fixing or may not be fixable. No wonder some of these people chain themselves to trees – they think money grows on them.

She’s not joking.

These are the lengths that reputable publications like the Christian Science Monitor are going to provide “balanced coverage” of the global warming issue. There is no meaningful debate within the scientific community, so scientific research is balanced by “conservative comedians.”

Did she tell Cheney-shooting-a-guy-in-the-face jokes, too?

Clearly, a comedian is more knowlegable about Science than scientists who get paid to do real research.

  7. Carlos says:

Obviously spending a trillion tax-payer dollars on a REAL threat is less important than creating a threat out of thin air and spending the same amount of money. I guess that is just the conservative pregorative.

  8. X-Man says:

The headline is misleading. I thought from the headline that the Christian Science Monitor was attacking a comedian, who wrote a global warming joke, as a sort of straw(wo)man attack. “Christian Science Monitor Prints Attack On Global Warming Science Written by Stand-Up Comic”

  9. unbelievable says:

Oh, I get it – this is some sort of immitation of what they think Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have going for them. Except , as usual, they miss the point entirely and think it’s just about comedy – and not about deeply biting satire based on reality…

Yes….they are all eight sided idiots!!!

  12. Above the Clouds says:

When she was saying, “Scared and unsure how to fight terrorists” was she talking about Rumsfeld and Cheney? I think I read that the Republicans are “in charge” of fighting the war on terror and they do control the White House and Congress, so it’s likely to be their decision on whether our “trillions” are sent to Iraq or fixing our issues at home.

  13. James says:

The ‘fix’ is to limit carbon dioxide emissions – pretty simple. Interestingly, however, many former global warming ‘deniers’ have now accepted that it is ‘real’ but that there is a trade-off to be made that may or may not work.

They are right: there is a trade-off to be made. The issue is how that ‘trade-off’ is constructed which determines the effects on the world economy in general. Kyoto was sensible in introducing carbon trading but very stupid in the way it has been implemented.

Specifically the biggest emitters were given carbon permits (which the EU discovered were in excess of actual emissions and the cost to emit a ton halved a month ago) rather than auctioned. The reason for the overallocation of permits was simple anyway – national governments decided who got how much and they wanted to give as much as possible.

Market solutions, in this case, are ‘right’ as long as the mechanism is effective. Of course that requires regulatory intervention as well:)

Of course, better fuel efficiency would be great and would cost little as the carmakers would bear most of the cost (which is why they are so against it not just that it might impact sales by increasing price). That’s a legislation issue although the market, in the form of high oil prices, is also ‘great’ from my environmental perspective – people drive less and switch to cars with better fuel efficiency. That sends a ’signal’ to carmakers to produce more fuel efficent cars.

Which, of course, is why I don’t like seeing a $78/b.o. headline with a negative implication followed by a CO2 headline. The price will recede when people start realizing that it ‘pays’ to become more fuel efficient and that’s a ‘plus’. It’s also what environmentalists want – another plus is that the high price induces Congress to find a ‘fix’ with the only real one being fuel efficiency standards.

Yah, a rant from a soul who has not commented in awhile.

  17. Patrick Kennedy says:

“…something that may not need fixing or may not be fixable.”

    Typical conservative argument.

Argument 1 – The science is uncertain

Actually the scientific agreement that global warming is occuring is almost universal and that human releases of greenhouse gases is the cause is accepted by the National Science Academies of eleven countries including the U.S.

The conservatives have lost argument 1 so now they move on to the next argument.

Argument 2a – It is too late to do anything about global warming
Argument 2b – It will cost a jillion dollars to fix it

It is too late to stop global warming entirely. However if we move now, it is not too late to prevent worst case scenarios from occuring. The conservatives won’t face the fact that we have no choice. We must reduce greenhouse gas emission levels to prevent catastrophic climate change. If we wait too long and if our actions are insufficient it really will be too late and/or it will cost a jillion dollars to fix.

  20. madashell says:

I have come to the conclusion that “conservativism” is a mental disorder.

  21. Bluedog49 says:

Madashell, there have been two major long-term studies on people who refer to themselves as conservatives. In general, they are more fearful than average, have more nightmares than average and are more likely to accept injustice around them without concern. Modern conservatives also exhibit an inordinate desire to follow the leader and accept authority without question. But, we all know this stuff already. It’s all pretty obvious.

  22. squegeeboo says:

“Conservative comedian – isn’t that an oxymoron?”

Perhaps, but then again, so is Female Comedian.

  23. unbelievable says:

I’ll agree to that bluedog… from personal experience. When I was in my mid-twenties I lived in a gated apartment complex in a very white and conservative area (Newt Gingrich territory). I was obessive compulsive about locking my apartment every night. And many nights I had nightmares about someone breaking in anyway and raping me or stealing everything.

One morning, I noticed I’d forgotten to lock the front door the night before. Instead of realizing that nothing had happened because my fear was pretty irrational, I had panic attacks about it for weeks, and more nightmares.

As a liberal, many years later, I rarely lock things. And very, very rarely have nightmares. When I do have them they are about what the neocons are doing to our planet and innocent people around the world…

  37. Gerald Gibson says:

What the hell is wrong with these people? An all new energy policy would cut our ties to oil, produce new fuels that are not near as bad for the environment, and generate lots of jobs to support it … sounds like a money making proposition to me… trillions of other peoples money is being spent on oil intrigue, oil wars, and all the fall out from this. We could be MAKING money by creating jobs for a new energy technology sector that FREES America from the oil noose that the big oil and middle east has around our necks.

    But! It is impossible!

    #1 BS
#2 If that is true then what are we going to do when the oil runs out?
#3 BS see Manhattan Project… it CAN and SHOULD be done.

  38. Pinky says:

Why do these people hate our children so much? Why is it they’d rather destroy our planet than do everything possible to ensure the planet will be here and be in good health for when the children, the children they claim to care so deeply about, inherit the earth? I thought the rethuglicans loved children. Love and protection of children seems to motivate their every move when it comes to wedge issues like gays raising children, and wanting to get married, but protect the planet for the kids? Not an issue. Complete insanity.

  39. Spudge_Boy says:

    Pinky,

See the posting about the Rapture Ready forum. That will answer all of your questions. These people do not think that the Earth as we know it will exist in a short time. They think they will all be raptured outta here and the rest of us will have hell on Earth. That is why they don’t care.

Sigh. Even though she’s not super qualified as a source for the CSM or anything–she does make an interetsing point: It’s going to cost trillions to “fix” global warming. You know what? It is going to cost trillions. Believe it or not, this does not make the problem go away, Conservative America! Talking about how much it’s going to cost is not a reason to not do something about this–especially if waiting is just going to make it cost more. Suppose I have a tumor or something. There’s no reason. It’s a waste of space and time and resources. I mean, if it’s that important to work overtime to print material (or have pundits or lobbyists who parade as “experts” on cable news channels), they might as well consult with a bunch of 8-year-olds to give their opinions on global warming, because the results would be almost the exact same.

Dear Bluedawg – I think the “useless crap” referred to by Scott the Sophmoric Moron, is “unbridled consumerism” of a wanton capitalist society. Funny thing – ALL the people I have ever heard bashing business or profit fit into the following categories:
    a.) public employees and bureaucrats
b.) students with umbilical cords attached to Mom and Dad
c.) the chronically unemployed or never-employed….
***Irony ALERT**** Progs who are upset on another thread that prog journalists are being credentialed for the YAF meeting are the same type who tell others to “shut up” – not a very tolerant attitude. 70. Bluedog49 says:

You need to broaden your scope. I run a small business and am a dedicated capitalist. I don’t bash business or profit — that’s your strawman. You, as a modern conservative, blissfully stare off into space, strangely blind to the effect of corporate power.

Conservative comedy is alive and well, but its purpose is inverted. Instead of afflicting the comfortable, it mocks poor folks and attempts to make fools of the rubes that usually vote for people like George Bush. Not that much different from other dirty tricks played by corrupt conservatives. It’s dishonest, and the joke’s on you.

In Julia Gorin’s opinion piece, the real humor is in the setup: commentary on a complex scientific phenomenon being offered by a comedian. What, not a scientist? Sorry, couldn’t find any that would offer such nonsense to defend the status quo.

From the excerpt we get a regal whiff of the basic strategy of her attack, which hinges on the assertion that the rhetoric of war being used by people concerned about climate change is just a cheap trick to divert attention from…uh, Bushco’s very expensive trick to divert our attention.

Perhaps Gorin would kindly suggest what rhetoric is appropriate for a life-and-death struggle for our species’ survival? Baseball? Well, it’s the seventh inning, and the home team’s behind by about a thousand runs. Football? We’ve got third down, 900 yards to go. Golf? Sorry, not enough rain for golf.

On the other hand, future comedians may regard Julia Gorin as “Saint Julia,” because if she persuades us to do nothing about global warming, future generations of comedians will have an endless supply of material on desertification, starvation, possibly even a new ice age.

    That’s some funny shit, Juilia!

I wrote to the Christian Science Monitor’s editor about this:

Your newspaper recently printed an attack on Al Gore and others, like myself, who take the threat of global warming seriously. The article was written by stand-up comic Julia Gorin. Your decision to print such a misleading and stupid non-sense article is disgraceful and irresponsible. You and your organization ought to feel ashamed. You obviously have no idea what you are doing.

You might print articles joking about the next major weather tragedy in New Orleans or the next tsunami or earthquake, but that would equally be in bad taste.

A better idea would be for you to provide your staff with tickets to see the movie “An Inconvenient Truth.” I have taken the time to watch the movie and it’s not a laughing matter. We should ALL be working diligently to resolve and prevent the approaching crisis, not make jokes about it. This is an issue that concerns all of us, whether we choose to pull our heads out of the sand or not.

I wonder did someone pay the Christian Science Monitor to promote moral idiocy? If so, I would hope that you would return the tainted Judas funds and correct your error in judgement, for the sake of mankind and our common good.

******Spoken like a true “toleRANT” progressive!! But then again, “progressive politics” is based on old, tired, failed philosophies. Need proof? Do some research on the “boutique socialism” in the worker’s paradise of Sweden? Their sociaized safety net is having a difficult time keep up with the entitled. Social spending had driven the government’s budget deficit to 35% of government spending and 13% of GDP. Swedish welfare provisions stipulated that anyone fired or laid off from a job could get up to 80% of his original salary in public assistance. Consequently, absenteeism in the private sector approached 25% – and why not? Work was punished! (A medical miracle occurred when Swedish pols decided that they would not allow sick pay for the “first day” of an illness – the result – miraculous work attendance on MONDAYS!) Free national health care made Sweden the “sickest” country in Europe – so long as government picked up the tab, Swedes demanded the highest care for the feeblest illnesses. The system buckled under the weight. Because almost everything was provided for, and because of income tax rates approaching 90% in the highest brackets, Swedish households accumulated almost no savings. And the CONFORMITY!!! Talk about intellectually stifling….
(the previous statistics attributed to Radley Balko and Virginia Postrel of Reason Magazine)

But the good news – the neo-libs (led by Carl Bildt), rolled back SOME of the entitlement spending and lowered the max tax on corporate profit. The social hammock inhabitants rejected the neo-libs but not before they WERE able to lessen telecom regulations, which has benefitted the Swedish economy. Now if they could just do something about Swedens’ abnormally high suicide rate….

    BACK ON THREAD – - Judd’s Caption:
“Christian Science Monitor Prints Attack On Global Warming Science Written by Stand-Up Comic” – - Oh no, what would the New York Times say about that? I’d LOVE to hear Keller and Pinchy’s opinion….

  89. Just Pete » Global Warming is No Joke says:

[...] Think Progress pointed out yesterday an article in the Christian Science Monitor attacking Al Gore and sane people who understand the dangers of global warming. It was written by Julia Gorin, a standup comic in Las Vegas. She obviously isn’t very funny. Freud called it displacement. People fixate on the environment when they can’t deal with real threats. [...]

  90. Pete says:

I doubt her shows are very funny. I sent in a letter to the editor; a copy is on my blog.

  91. Scott says:

Hey Aphrodite, goddess of love, or whatever delusional title you want to go by, thank you for agreeing with my world view. You seem to be challenged in the creative thinking department, so let me throw out some food for thought. One way to promote downsizing of the population would be to encourage those umbilically bound students to become abortion providers. Gluttony could be reduced by you joining the ranks of the unemployed and getting gastric bypass surgery. A good load of useless crap could be disposed of by removing most republicans from government positions.

On the subject of Cheney face shooting, did you hear your president joke about it during the White House Correspondence Dinner?

  92. troll alert says:

    Scott = unbelievable.\\\ word ”delusional” a clear give-away.

M.A.,This hag, unbelievable,is clearly psychotic and just playing with herself.

  94. unbelievable says:

I didn’t invent the word delusional – nor do I have exclusive rights to use it. And it pretty much fits you and your multiple personalities…

What are you going to do for the next two weeks that I’m out of town and in pre-planning meetings at school? Accuse the entire site of being me? Go ahead. Everyone already thinks your psychotic.

You’re the one who name shifts. I am only ‘unbelievable’.

  95. troll alert says:

    Shouldn’t Scott speak for ‘himself’?
Two weeks out of town huh;I’ll be keeping a close eye on that. One less troll perhaps.
To say you only post as unbelievable has been proven false many times over.
‘Your’ should be ‘you are’ or ‘you’re’;as in, you’re a lying idiot.

  96. unbelievable says:

To say you only post as unbelievable has been proven false many times over.

No it hasn’t. Because you can’t prove something that isn’t true. And stating you opinion does not make it true. Just proves you are a paranoid freak of nature.

‘Your’ should be ‘you are’ or ‘you’re’;as in, you’re a lying idiot.

Nitpicking grammar? Funny from someone with non-existent grammar skills itself.

Proof that you are a lying idiot is the fact that I am neither.

By the way – a troll is someone like Seixon who is an opponent. A progressive on a progressive site is never the troll.

  97. troll alert says:

    A loud-mouth,like you,is always a troll.
And you posted in M.A.s name, that can be proven.

  98. Scott says:

    Troll Alert,

I am the sophomoric moron from post 61 and 92. I want credit for my thoughts. Don’t give someone else my glory.

  99. unbelievable says:

    A loud-mouth,like you,is always a troll.

Speak for yourself. I already explained that periods at the end of sentances do not connotate yelling, but normal tone. You really should have learned that in first grade.

And you posted in M.A.s name, that can be proven.
    Comment by troll alert — July 15, 2006 @ 6:15 pm

Then prove it. Except that you can’t because it wasn’t me. I only post as ‘unbelievable’. You are simply projecting your own behavior on to me because you are obssessed with me. Well, get over it.

I’m out of here until Wednesday…

  101. troll alert (the improved version 2.0) says:

“troll alert” has been recalled due to consistent inaccuracy in detecting trolls and habitual mistaken identities among Progressive bloggers.

The problem stems from a lack of adequate electronic capacity (i.e. “brain” damage).

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. But are mostly embarrassed by the utter failure of our “troll alert” product.

Update: We suggest you uninstall the original “troll alert” version to prevent from giving your computer a rather nasty case of Syphilis.

  102. troll alert says:

Nice set-up,unbelievable,saying you’re gone for the day, then coming back and unloading your pile in # 105.
THAT’S THE OLDEST TRICK IN THE BOOK….[roflmao]

(the improved version 2.0) = unbelievable.

  103. troll alert says:

    # 103:

You said ”prove it”; I just did.(or you did).

    Still laughing–hahahahahahaha………………………………………………

  104. Liberals are smrat says:

I am no scientist, but that won’t stop me from making broad statements about the scientific community or methods. I read the news and it tells me what to think. I am good at being told what to do so therefore I feel it my duty to do my part and attack dissent. Yes, you see, there is no room for debate. I am told what to believe, currently it’s that 100% of the “smart scientists” are unanimous on global warming. All the other scientists are jesus freak flat earth society larry the cable guy watching neanderthals! LOLLERSLORFOOLES!! I love being apart of the cool in croud of such “critical thinkers”!

  105. BluesOutback says:

This Gorin — I’ve heard of her before – just barely. But if this is the best material she can come up with – its a good thing that many right wingers are humor impaired!:

    QUOTE
Scared and unsure how to fight terrorists, they confront “climate change,” which only requires spending trillions of other people’s dollars on something that may not need fixing or may not be fixable. No wonder some of these people chain themselves to trees – they think money grows on them.

Is this what Fox is going to try to put up as the alternative to The Daily Show?

The Nutjobs are stealing lines again: We will fight them on the beaches, we will fight them in the trenches – we will fight them in the Comedy Clubs?
