Young America’s Foundation Student Conference Bans Progressive Reporters

jason_mattera1.jpg Starting July 30, the Young America’s Foundation – which “specializes in helping young people advance conservative ideas” – will host the The National Conservative Student Conference.

Julie Siegel, a staff member at the Daily Pennsylvanian at UPenn, contacted YAF and asked for credentials to cover the convention on behalf of CampusProgress.org, the student publication at the Center for American Progress.

YAF’s spokesman Jason Mattera, who describes himself as “the surprisingly fresh face of conservatism,” denied her request:

Our event is open to real members of the press. You will not receive press credentials. My advice for you is to watch it on C-SPAN. If you have a problem with that decision, you can complain to the Foundation’s media department spokesman. Oh wait…that’s…me. :)

Subsequently, Mattera made clear that his decision to reject Siegel’s request was made on ideological grounds. Mattera told CampusProgress.org editor Ben Adler that The Nation, the country’s oldest progressive magazine with a circulation of almost 200,000, would also be denied credentials.

Mattera has twice covered the CampusProgress student conference for the National Review after that publication was granted press credentials, including the 2006 conference which took place on Wednesday.

Contact Rich Lowry, who is on the board of YAF’s National Journalism Center and writes for the National Review, and ask him if he supports Mattera’s decision to exclude reporters on ideological grounds. Let us know what you hear back.

CAP, TP, and the likes are seriously going to have to contemplate Progressive radios durability through this current Israeli “crisis”.

Progressive radio and the Democratic party can no longer typecast bloggers as seperate from national debate. As it is now, prog radio downplays anti-Israel sentiment. Which is a far greater injustice than Mr. Velcro not allowing reporters because of ideology.

  17. jonah gelbach says:

Text of a letter I just sent Mr. Lowry:

    Dear Mr. Lowry:

I understand that you are a board member for the Young Americans for Freedom’s National Journalism Center.
I am writing to you regarding what appears to be strangely fearful behavior by Mr. Jason Mattera,
YAF media department spokesperson regarding YAF’s upcoming National Conservative Student Conference.

    Apparently, Mr. Mattera has refused media credentials to a reporter seeking to cover this event for CampusProgress.org ;
Mr. Mattera’s apparent refusal seems to be due to ideological disagreement with CampusProgress.org (see
this link for details). I note that Mr. Mattera told the reporter in question that she could apply to attend the conference as
a paying member, and also that he would deny credentials to reporters from other publications as well, based on his
political disagreements with those publications. Intriguingly, Mr. Mattera has twice been credentialed to cover
CampusProgress.org’s own conference (see this link for details).

As a YAF NJC board member, do you support this sort of insularity? Do you think that denying press credentials based
on ideological disagreement is in any way “journalistic”? Is this the sort of education in “journalism” that YAF’s NJC
    is promoting?

As a scholar and educator (I teach economics at the University of Maryland and will be a Visiting Professor of
Law & Economics at the FSU law school next year) who believes that open inquiry is an important part of political life
for partisans on all sides, I am sorry to see such an instance of conservatives turning inward, in apparent fear of open
    examination of their ideas.

Conservatives love to talk about how liberals’ supposed lack of ideas is partly due to such insularity, and so on.
Do you worry that your younger generation (Mr. Mattera calls himself “the surprisingly fresh face of conservatism”,
a claim about which I can make no assessment on grounds other than his surprising and perhaps fresh fear of
coverage by those who disagree with him; I will simply assume that he is, indeed, a face of conservativism) is
going to fall into just such a talk-only-to-each-other trap?

I have to think that you, as a prominent opinion journalist, must be at least a little embarrassed to hear of
    Mr. Mattera’s Politburoism.

    Sincerely,

    Jonah B. Gelbach

Well, that is the idea. You know, opposition party and all that. Left being opposite of right would mean Democrat is opposite of Republican. Opposition = opposite.

Unbelieveable – Not knowing your sex based on your post, I went with the default pronoun of “he”. My point still stands. Republican should not be an opposite of Democrat. We are all Americans and there should be some core principles that we all share. Democracy, rule of law, struggle for the common good, etc. We may not always agree on policy on how to obtain these goals, but we should remember that we are suppose to be on the same team. Republicans in the last 20 years have so polarized our country that you actually believe that R is opposite of D. Just think about that. Through inflammed rhetoric of the Coulter/Limbaugh/Hannity/O’reilly variety you may actually believe that liberals hate America and want to see it destroyed. Not only is that crazy, but it undermines a core strength of our country.

    Mike, I remember it well.

MATTERA: I think my group is supporting President Bush on this matter. We‘re looking to defeat the terrorists.

    MATTHEWS: Where? In Iraq.

MATTERA: In Iraq. Of course in Iraq.

And there—you won‘t see on college campuses, as you did in the 1960s, these rampant protests, these obstruction of classroom, these—the book burning, everything that went down. I think kids are more conservative today. And I think groups such as the Young America‘s Foundation help that—help mold that conservatism.

MATTHEWS: Would you like to enlist them? You‘re 21. You‘re eligible to serve. Would you like to serve in this war?

MATTERA: I‘m fighting the battle for ideas. I‘m fighting…

    (CROSSTALK)

MATTHEWS: No, I‘m just asking a particular question. Would you like to enlist in this war?

MATTERA: No, because I‘m fighting a separate battle. I‘m fighting—we‘re fighting the culture war here, but I‘m also supporting the battle that‘s raging in Iraq.

MATTHEWS: Well, what kind of people should fight in this war, if not you?

MATTERA: Those who want to, those who want—who feel the desire, who have the passion to go over to Iraq. I have many friends who are in Iraq myself, people from my church, people who I graduated with.

    MATTHEWS: Yes.

MATTERA: They went to go fight over there. I‘m here. I‘m fighting

the culture war right now. Both need to be fought and both need to be won

    by conservatives.

MATTHEWS: Paul Hackett, a Democratic candidate for Congress who just lost that close election in Ohio, referred to the president as a chicken hawk, somebody who supports war, but doesn‘t fight it. What do you think of that phrase, chicken hawk?

MATTERA: I don‘t like the phrase chicken hawk.

    (CROSSTALK)

    MATTHEWS: Why not?

MATTERA: Because it doesn‘t fit. I don‘t think President Bush…

MATTHEWS: It means you talk hawk, but you act chicken.

MATTERA: Yes, I understand that, but I don‘t think that President Bush is a chicken hawk.

First impressions last. My first impression of your organization has been formed by Jason Mattera, when he wrote to an aspiring journalist:

Thus my first impression of the Young America Foundation is that it is comprised of individuals who are arrogant and abuse positions of power.

I’ll let you know his response, if and when I receive one.

Deficits flucuate by congresses/administrations and vary by percentage of GDP but the debt keeps growing. How do we get politicians to stop passing the BUCK. It will be your problem soon enough. America, beware! Ideologies left unchecked and carried forth by spasmodic lunatics like this kid can quickly turn into Nazi Germany revived. These people don’t like to think; they want someone to tell them how to do EVERYTHING because following orders is all they understand. All that kid wants to hear us say is “TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER.” People like this are obsessed with evil, manipulation, and secrecy because they crave (and worship people in) ultimate power. And they eventually will “eat their own” (sell each other out) to stay in power or protect their so-called leader. Sounds like a certain biblical character…I think they called him SATAN.

I realize that this is off topic, but just a comment about Mighty Aphrodite.

Aphrodite was the mythological Goddess of love and beauty. Now, we of course have no way of knowing if MA fulfills the physical requirement, but her words engender anything but love.

I’d like to suggest the the Think Progress community award Mighty Aphrodite with a new name drawn from mythology; one more in keeping with the rancor she displays.

My own humble suggestion would be Mighty Kali, the multi-armed Hindu Goddess of Evil and Death. You may remember the movie “Gunga Din” with Sam Jaffe, Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and other luminaries of the silver screen. In that movie the “thugees” went into battle screaming ‘kill for the love of Kali”.

This seems to be more in keeping with the vituperation that spews from MA.

  119. madashell says:

For almost half a century, social scientists have been exploring authoritarianism. We do not typically associate authoritarianism with our democracy, but as I discovered while examining decades of empirical research, we ignore some findings at our risk. Unfortunately, the social scientists who have studied these issues report their findings in monographs and professional journals written for their peers, not for general readers. With the help of a leading researcher and others, I waded into this massive body of work.

What I found provided a personal epiphany. Authoritarian conservatives are, as a researcher told me, “enemies of freedom, antidemocratic, antiequality, highly prejudiced, mean-spirited, power hungry, Machiavellian and amoral.” And that’s not just his view. To the contrary, this is how these people have consistently described themselves when being anonymously tested, by the tens of thousands over the past several decades.

Authoritarianism’s impact on contemporary conservatism is beyond question. Because this impact is still growing and has troubling (if not actually evil) implications, I hope that social scientists will begin to write about this issue for general readers. It is long past time to bring the telling results of their empirical work into the public square and to the attention of American voters. No less than the health of our democracy may depend on this being done. We need to stop thinking we are dealing with traditional conservatives on the modern stage, and instead recognize that they’ve often been supplanted by authoritarians.

    Triumph of the Authoritarians

Perhaps true, but what it boils down to, Ruth, is that Jason doesn’t want to get his feelings hurt. You see, Julie might write something that Jason just doesn’t want to hear. It might contradict his foundation’s message…might give people something to think about…and, well, gosh, we can’t have that now can we?

And speaking of “real newspapers,” I wonder what credentials Jason has as a “real” reporter seeing as how he has twice covered the CampusProgress student conference for the National Review? Reading his childish response to Julie as posted above, apparently the answer is “none.” Checking his bio reveals not a hint of a journalism major. Seeing as how she is a staff member of a university publication and Jason is, well, not, I’d say she could run circles around ol’ Jason without much effort.

And the only way to know someone else’s innocence 100% is if YOU are that person. You’re busted Sybil – Si Byl – Denny – E. Coli – MA

  163. mighty aphrodite says:

#163 – You wish…..But that’s the hallmark of progs – wishing upon a star….but wishing with all your MIGHT and telling the same old tired lies, doesn’t make it so…

    Hasn’t stopped you yet…

You just hate me because I see through your lies liitle boy. Whatever…

  165. troll alert says:

    M.A.

    Pinky = unbelievable there somehow KNEW that you didn’t write # 137;see # 149.
She thought that she had busted you, but instead busted herself.
If she want’s to believe that we are the same person it proves her ability to decieve herself (and others).

  166. mighty aphrodite says:

troll alert – That poor little thing – she REALLY is deserving of our sympathy and compassion. I remember when we had a very humourous conservative who posted here, jealous progs would hijack his screen name. Proudly politically incorrect in every category, he was a heterosexual man who threw enemy sympathizers and traitors under the progressive bus. (This poster drove all of them crazy except the spinster atheist). (With the subtlety of a jack hammer, she let him know she had some excellent ideas for his reformation.) Like a few prog women I know, they are convinced their role in life is to build a “new and improved” version of the metrosexual. Funny – they’re ALL still single…. In short, ANYONE with the mental capacity of a savant with a scintilla of English comprehension could discern the tone, vocab, syntax, etc. between you and me.

  167. Drina says:

    # 158. Drina—Check the IP if you like,but I can assure you I am not M.A..
Notice that I first posted at 2:21 a.m.;M.A. never posts that late(or early).

Perhaps. Your posts don’t have MA’s snobbish, uppity tone. But I don’t understand your preoccupation with questioning progressive posters’ identities here. You do realize that there are more than one or two people here who support Think Progress, right? And I don’t spend all of my free time harassing Red State’s minions for sounding identical. That’s just silly.

I think we’ve forgotten what this thread was intended to discuss. The issue here is not whether MA, TA, pinky, or unbelievable are four actual people or merely one or two with aliases. I can’t exclusively blame MA and TA for this even though her/his/their entire purpose for posting is to distract progressives from focusing on the real issue –the hypocrisy of this “pro-freedom” Republican youth group taking a page from the commies and prohibiting progressives from covering their event. The progressives here are equally at fault because we allowed these people to sabotage our discussion and distract us from more important things.

We shouldn’t be arguing back and forth over who really posted what, and we should be taking any conservative bait. As a pastor friend of mine once said, the devil himself lures us into disorder and darkness.

So, who here has gotten a response from Jason Mattera? Although his level of integrity leaves something to be desired, I’m interested in how he, and others affiliated with this organization, defend their behavior.

  168. troll alert says:

    # 168. Drina:

Thank you for your response.Let me begin by apologising to you for pulling you into this by my mistake. My bad.
I was wrong about you,but I am not wrong about the writing of ”Pinky”.If you had been here at T.P. enough, you would have seen what I saw a mile away.
And that’s not to mention # 137,which is clearly a forgery that I thought should be exposed. You witnessed two other posters fall for a fallacy.
We all here support T.P.. Just remember that everyone who clicks on here, for whatever reason, helps T.P..The more clicks the better for any web-site,even yours.

  169. troll alert says:

    # 167. M.A.:

…”discern the tone, vocab, syntax, etc. between you and me.”

One would think after 5 months of my dealing with her(unbelievable/Pinky/others),being as ‘’smart” as she thinks she is,that she would know that by now.I think she likes to just say that because she thinks it will help rally her syncophants behind her.You know how she operates. You also saw two of her buddies jump on you about something you did not write.Even the great shamman.
Speaking of tone, vocab.et al;Go read again Pinky; if that’s not her,I’ll eat my hat.But remember, she will never, ever, admit to posting under other names, but she does.

  170. troll alert (the improved version 2.0) says:

troll alert and Mighty Windbag are both psychotic.

Small minds discuss people (TA and MA), while great minds discuss ideas (liberals).

  171. troll alert (the improved version 2.0) says:

Pinky is not unbelievable. Go eat your hat. The one made out of tin foil.

  172. Drina says:

Small minds discuss people (TA and MA), while great minds discuss ideas (liberals).

Agreed. So let’s get back to business… any news with this spoiled conservative kid?

  173. troll alert says:

    # 173 Drina: B.T.W. I liked your website;will return.

I know you don’t care, but unbelievable has used that same tired quote atleast 4 times in the last 6 weeks.

(the improved version 2.0) & Pinky = unbelievable. CHECKMATE.

  174. Seixon says:

LOL@ Jay Randal. That doesn’t look a thing like me. Get a clue moron.

  175. Drina says:

(the improved version 2.0) & Pinky = unbelievable. CHECKMATE.

TA, thanks for complimenting my website. It was a nice gesture. Despite this, however, I do have to point out that in your last few posts you’ve taken a page from Rove’s dirty Republican playbook (ie. repeat it until they believe it). You even added a “checkmate” for extra force. So how many times are you going to repeat this accusation? Another five or six, perhaps? Until you’ve psychologically manipulated everyone into thinking you’ve actually proven something?

I mean, come on already. This tactic may work on everyone to the right of Hillary Clinton, but we’re not that gullible here. If we were to assume that all similarly-sounding posts were written by the same person, the only logical conclusion we could make is that there are at most three of four conservatives surfing the entire blogosphere.

Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate that your posts aren’t nearly as snotty as that uppity windbag MA. But you’ve really managed to do nothing here except further convince us that conservatives have nothing to say. Except, of course, when they’re spouting off, contradicting the values they claim to espouse (freedom, big tent, anti-communism, humility, etc.)

Let me guess, your response to this will be, Pinky = unbelievable, right?

  176. Corey says:

The “new” younger generation of fundamentalists are ready to take over….be ready for the world to get a worse place to live….

  177. Pinky says:

Not that this will be seen, but I discovered today someone thinks my nom-de-plume “Pinky” belongs to someone else (one person posting under several different names). Sorry. Pinky is me and not whoever it is you want it to be. If my tone is similar to someone else, it’s simply because we are in agreement and share similar thought patterns on the topics.

  178. AScholar says:

    Pinky:
    Yea sure,riiiight.
Why would you even want to be associated with those crude, vulgar and uneducated remarks?

  179. Think Progress » Progressive Reporter Ejected From National Conservative Student Conference says:

[...] ThinkProgress reported recently that YAF’s spokesman Jason Mattera (who describes himself as “the surprisingly fresh face of conservatism”) had denied a request by a representative of our sister organization, Campus Progress, to cover the event. From Mattera’s email: Our event is open to real members of the press. You will not receive press credentials. My advice for you is to watch it on C-SPAN. If you have a problem with that decision, you can complain to the Foundation’s media department spokesman. Oh wait…that’s…me. :) [...]
